THE EASTERN BANDS PHILOSOPHY

SYSTEM + SPIRIT = SUCCESS The two most important attributes of a successful band program are a SYSTEM and SPIRIT. A SYSTEM is a way of doing things. It represents the total structure of our program, including: organization, procedures, activities, philosophies, teaching methods, marching and playing style, and policies. SPIRIT represents how individual band members respond to the SYSTEM. It includes practice habits, positive attitudes, mental discipline, and work ethic. When the SYSTEM is followed and good SPIRIT is in place, the result is success, and it’s by-products, including: pride, enthusiasm, loyalty, discipline, and dedication. (Permanently borrowed from Gary E. Smith, Director Emeritus, University of Illinois Marching Illini) Always focus on the The Three P’s: Passion, Preparation, and Professionalism. You are PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS now! A wonderful journey lies ahead! BAND IS FAMILY. BE A SUPERB FAMILY MEMBER. TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER!!!

Jazz Ensemble The Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Richard Schwartz, is the premier jazz organization at Eastern. Players of the following instruments are eligible to audition for the Jazz Band: alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass guitar, and drum set. Small jazz combos may also be formed dependent upon interest and proper instrumentation. The Jazz Band and combos perform throughout the Fall and Spring semesters for university and civic events. Green & Silver Classic Marching Festival Held annually on the first Tuesday of October, the ENMU Green and Silver Classic Marching Band Festival, hosted by the ENMU and Portales High School Bands, was created to support high school marching bands throughout the region as they prepare for other major marching festivals. A panel of three nationally recognized music educators provides formative commentary in the areas of music performance, marching performance and general effect. Comprehensive performance rubrics guide adjudicator commentary. This festival is designed to be educational. Hound For A Day During our Hound For A Day event, we invite high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to come to campus to preview being a member of a college marching band for a day. ATTENDANCE POLICY & GRADING CRITERIA

Attendance Policy

1. Rehearsals are scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:10 PM – 1:50 PM. At 12:10 PM (or the beginning of a scheduled rehearsal) the Drum Majors will sound whistles signaling the time to move to the attendance/stretching formation. Attendance will be taken and anyone who is tardy must sign-in with the Administrative Assistant. Name, time, and reason for tardiness are required.

2. Habitual tardiness will result in one or more of the following: alternate status, lowered grade, or dismissal from the band.

3. On Saturday, prior to kickoff of Greyhound home games, the band will meet for a final rehearsal of the pregame and halftime shows. Saturday rehearsals will be limited only to the time necessary to insure an outstanding performance. Prompt attendance is mandatory and you are expected to arrive early. If a member is late for a Saturday rehearsal, his/her marching privilege may be suspended for that game and he/she may assume alternate status at the discretion of the Director.

4. Sectionals called by the Directors and Student Leaders are mandatory unless you notify the Student Leader IN ADVANCE! The student leader will communicate the nature of your absence to the Director.

5. Failure to attend Greyhound Sound rehearsals will be recognized as an indication of your lack of interest in the ensemble and you may be dismissed at any time.

Grading Criteria At the collegiate level, ensemble rehearsals are considered academic courses (grades of A, B, C, D, and F are earned). Outside practice is essential and should be considered “homework”. The success of the GSMB depends exclusively upon your contributions as an ensemble member.

1. Approach & Effectiveness- being punctual and productive, being a valuable team member.

2. Attendance- one unexcused absence will result in the lowering of your grade by one letter. Two tardies are equal to one unexcused absence. One unexcused performance will warrant a failing grade and possible dismissal from the GSMB.

An excused absence is an absence that is cleared with the Director at least three days before a rehearsal or at least two weeks before a performance. The student must submit a Request for Absence via email. In the event of an illness, written verification from your doctor must be submitted.

© 2020-2021 ENMU BANDS OFFICIAL HANDBOOK & SYLLABUS

Excused absences include: serious illness, death in the family, wedding in the immediate family (sister, brother, mother, father), officially sanctioned university travel, job interviews, and religious obligations. Unexcused absences include any absence not listed above. Unacceptable reasons to miss a rehearsal: “They needed me to work…” “I had a dorm meeting…” “My fraternity/sorority (anything)…” “I had to study…” “I went to my high school alumni band performance…” “I was stuck in a line at Wal-Mart…” “I thought it was Tuesday…” “I overslept…” “I backed over my trumpet…” “When I’m freaked out I can’t do anything…” “I had an exam…” “Mondays are free lunch days…” “I was working an extra shift at Wally World…” “I left my trombone in Dublin, Ireland…” “I couldn’t make bail…” “I’m sick (every other day)…” “It was too windy…” “I had to meet with my advisor…” “The voices told me not to…” “My dog ate my music…” “I got stuck in traffic…” “I ran out of my medication…” “My power went out…” “My roommate turned off my alarm…” “I had to drive my roommate to…” “My alarm didn’t go off…” “My mom didn’t wake me up…” “My car isn't very powerful and the last time I tried to drive when it was this windy my car died and I had to have someone jump it…” “I need to support my high school band at Zia/TOB/BOA/POB…”

BETA LAMBDA CHAPTER OF KAPPA KAPPA PSI ESTABLISHED - MAY 8, 1949

The Eastern Bands are proud of their national honorary band fraternity- Kappa Kappa Psi. This organization works to assist the Directors in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required of all band members. Their goal is to “not only provide the bands with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give their membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership, and social contacts.” Chapter responsibilities include numerous service projects, as well as providing the intangibles: morale, spirit, enthusiasm, productive rehearsal atmosphere, and positive attitude. Membership in KKY is open to all students (by invitation) who are enrolled in an Eastern Band. Candidates participate in a membership education program of eight weeks before becoming “active”. Meetings are held once a month, leaving time for studies and other co-curricular activities. Like all active members, candidates must show their interest and desire in serving the ENMU Bands. The Fraternity is presently located in over 160 colleges and universities. Since 1919, more than 50,000 interested band members have devoted their efforts to strengthening their bands through group and individual service projects. The Fraternity's program of continued service to music has attracted the attention of the best from the American band tradition. KKY numbers among its ranks: John Philip Sousa, Karl King, Frank Simon, Herbert L. Clarke, Harold Bachman, Neil Armstrong, William D. Revelli, President Bill Clinton and many other contemporary composers, conductors, music educators, and professionals. At the 2009 and 2011 Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma National Conventions in Phoenix and Colorado Springs, respectively, ENMU received the F. Lee Bowling Award.

COVID-19 MITIGATION Eastern New Mexico University continues to monitor the evolving public health recommendations from the Governor’s office and the CDC. We will continue to do everything we can to keep our Campus Community safe. Effective Monday, August 2, 2021, ENMU will require masks to be worn indoors by all individuals, vaccinated and unvaccinated. Masks must be worn in any indoor group setting, including classrooms. All students, faculty, staff and visitors must wear their masks at all times in ENMU buildings unless they are eating, drinking, or in an office alone. ENMU is requiring unvaccinated individuals to wear masks outdoors when unable to socially distance. Vaccinated individuals are not required to wear masks outdoors. Any employee who requires medical accommodations should contact Human Resources at [email protected]. Students requiring accommodations should contact Accessibility Resources at 575.562.2280. The Governor’s recent executive order requiring vaccinations or testing does not apply to ENMU as we are not direct employees of the state. Currently, ENMU is not requiring members of the ENMU Community to provide proof of vaccination status. We are confident that the members of our community will do the right thing and follow our protocols as it relates to their individual vaccination status. Please help us continue good public health practices (handwashing; staying home when ill; physical distancing, when possible; mask-wearing, etc.) so we all stay safe and healthy. This directive will be in effect until further notice. The ENMU Bands, Department of Music, and Eastern New Mexico University will use a number of other mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of virus spread. We ask that all students do their part to ensure the health and safety of the group by observing stated and written policies as individuals. An honest, daily self-assessment is the key to our success. Refrain from using the virus as an excuse to miss class or rehearsal, but do take the presentation of symptoms seriously. If you feel sick, please stay at home.
