“Having the privilege of becoming a Community Foundation Scholar is not only something that I am proud of, but also is something that gives me hope for my future. It is an honor to have received this scholarship, as well as being the first person in my family to attend college. Thank you for taking a chance on me and allowing me to move forward with my life.”

Trustee Scholarship Initiative CommitteeWe are fortunate to have a group of dedicated volunteers and community leaders who lend their expertise to serve on the committee that

oversees the Community Foundation and New Opportunities Scholars programs. Current committee members are:

Chairman: Oscar Jackson (Secretary of Human Resources & Administration, State of Oklahoma – retired)

Dear 2016 Scholars:Congratulations! What an exciting time this is for each of you! The path ahead is wide-open and full of promise. You are about to start

the journey of a lifetime and we are pleased to play a role in your bright future.

When the Trustee Scholarship Initiative was established, the Trustees had one goal in mind: to encourage more students in central

Oklahoma to further their education after high school. This is the 18th year of our Trustee Scholarship Initiative and we are honored to

continue this tradition with the next generation.

The scholarships that are awarded are made possible by many caring and generous donors. A list of donors can be found on pages 4-5.

You may never meet any of these individuals and families, but know that they wanted to provide opportunities for you — the future of

our great state. We hope that you will keep this in mind as you go through life and one day look for ways to give back.

This yearbook was made especially for you and your fellow scholarship recipients. We hope you keep it as a memento of your

accomplishments. May it serve as a reminder of your dedication and hard work and that the Oklahoma City Community Foundation

believed in you and your success.

As you begin the next phase of your life, we wish you the best of luck. Please stay in touch and keep us posted as your higher education

aspirations come true. Now, don’t forget — go to class!

The Trustee Scholarship InitiativeFounded in 1998, the Trustee Scholarship Initiative was established to encourage more students in central Oklahoma to further their education after high school. In addition to scholarship support, the Initiative also provides training and resources for high school counselors through the Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network. To date, the Trustee Scholarship Initiative has awarded more than $5 million in scholarship funds to nearly 5,000 students. Below are summaries of the Initiative’s programs:

Community Foundation ScholarsThe Community Foundation Scholars program rewards good

students who are also good citizens. Within this program,

recipients include students who might not otherwise qualify for

awards based solely on academic standards and students who

will be the first in their family to attend college. For the 2016-17

academic year, a total of 162 Community Foundation Scholars will

receive a $2,000 award.

Oklahoma Youth With Promise ScholarsThe Oklahoma City Community Foundation works with both

public and private agencies to award scholarships to students

who graduated from high school while in Oklahoma’s foster care

system. These students receive support from volunteer mentors in

addition to scholarship funds. During the 2015-16 academic year,

27 students were awarded scholarships through this program.

Nurse Education ProgramThe Nurse Education Program Scholarship was established in

2003 to help address the need for qualified nursing staff in

area hospitals and provides an award up to $2,000 per student.

Scholarships are available for: 1) third and fourth year college

students enrolled in a nursing program and 2) practicing

Registered Nurses who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a

nursing-related program. The scholarship may be used at any

accredited public or private nonprofit educational institution

in Oklahoma. For the 2015-16 academic year, 10 nurses were

awarded scholarships.

Finish My Degree OKCFinishMyDegreeOKC.org is a service for

adults who have some college credits but no

degree. The website provides direct links to

more than 20 metro area schools, colleges

and universities that offer degree completion

programs. FinishMyDegreeOKC is part of

a larger effort that Oklahoma City and 56

other large U.S. metropolitan areas are

undertaking to increase the number of post-secondary degrees

granted in their community.

“I truly appreciate your generosity and support toward my education. Your generosity has inspired me to make a difference in the community. I hope I will be able to help other students achieve their goals and lighten their financial burden just as you have helped me.”

The Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network

The Central Oklahoma Guidance Counselor Network is an essential part of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation’s Trustee Scholarship Initiative. The network provides training and support for high school guidance counselors at 52 public and private high schools in central Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation understands the vital role of counselors in assisting high school students on their path

to college. The information and resources offered through our two annual continuing education workshops provides counselors with

the opportunity to learn about current college admission issues and financial aid opportunities. We also coordinate campus visits for

counselors to universities, colleges and technology centers in Oklahoma and surrounding states. As an added incentive, each year we

provide at least one Community Foundation Scholars award to the high schools whose guidance counselor participated in the activities.

Trustee Scholarship Initiative: Major DonorsThe success of the Trustee Scholarship Initiative would not be possible without the support of the many donors who requested their contributions be used for scholarships and varied educational programs. Below are highlights of several donors whose gifts provide substantial support for the Initiative.

Albers Family Affiliated FundBoth graduates of Oklahoma City’s

John Marshall High School, Paul and

Leigh Ann Albers established the

Albers Family Affiliated Fund in 2006

to support organizations and causes

important to their family. The fund

supports Community Foundation

Scholar awards for first-generation

students at John Marshall High School.

Central High School Alumni AssociationThe Central High School Alumni Association (CHSAA) continues

a tradition of education for the community by providing

scholarships for students who graduate from high schools in

central Oklahoma. Founded in 1892, Central High School was

the first high school in Oklahoma City, serving students until its

closure in 1968. The fund supports seven Community Foundation

Scholar awards.

Irene P. and Samuel E. Frierson Educational TrustDr. and Mrs. Frierson were longtime residents of Oklahoma City.

A Mississippi native, Dr. Frierson served as an army surgeon in

France during World War I. He returned to practice medicine

in Oklahoma City for more than 40 years. The Friersons, who

both died in the early 1960s, had no surviving children and had

created the Frierson Educational Trust to provide scholarships

for students that attend college in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City

Community Foundation is honored to administer the Frierson

Educational Trust in conjunction with the Bank of Oklahoma Trust

Department. The fund supports in-state Community Foundation

Scholars who reapply for scholarships in their second, third and

fourth years of college.

E.K. Gaylord FundIn 1903, E.K. Gaylord moved from

Colorado to Oklahoma Territory. With two

partners, he established the Oklahoma

Publishing Company that is now known

as The Oklahoman Media Company,

which publishes The Oklahoman and

NewsOK.com. Mr. Gaylord established the

scholarship fund prior to his death, and a

bequest from his estate also benefitted the fund. The E.K. Gaylord

Fund supports awards made through the Community Foundation

Scholars and Oklahoma Youth With Promise programs.

Sue and Joe Esco Fund supports a number of causes that were

important to the family including a scholarship at Idabel High

School, the Community Foundation Scholars and the Oklahoma

Youth With Promise programs.

McGee Foundation FundThe McGee Foundation was originally established in 1963 by

Kerr McGee founder, Dean A. McGee, and his wife Dorothea.

The McGees were involved in a wide range of business and civic

endeavors, and Mr. McGee was one of the nine original Trustees of

the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. In 2006, the McGee

Foundation established an endowment at the Oklahoma City

Community Foundation that supports scholarship opportunities

through the Trustee Scholarship Initiative.

was a longtime supporter of education.

Within the Trustee Scholarship Initiative,

the Winona S. Presley Fund supports

the activities of the Central Oklahoma

Guidance Counselor Network.

Willie Elizabeth Shipley FundThrough the generosity of donors like Willie Elizabeth Shipley, the

Oklahoma City Community Foundation is able to provide funding

for the Community Foundation Scholars program. Miss Shipley

worked as the secretary of the Oklahoma State Senate for 48 years

and documented some of the most colorful history of a developing

state. A bequest from her estate was left to the Oklahoma City

Community Foundation to benefit students.

Providing Opportunities through ScholarshipsIn addition to the Trustee Scholarship Initiative, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation administers the state’s largest independent scholarship program. The stories below provide an example of how donors establish scholarship and award endowment funds to provide educational and enrichment opportunities for others. Visit occf.org/scholarshipdirectory to view a complete list of scholarship endowment funds we administer.

Supporting Dreams that Build FuturesMr. Wendell Steward was a highly respected construction expert

in central Oklahoma. During his career, Mr. Steward often

donated his expertise to various private and public development

efforts in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. He was honored

as the Builder of the Year three times and received the lifetime

achievement award from the Central Oklahoma Homebuilders

Association. Following his death in 2007, the advisors to

the Southwest Homebuilders Association endowment fund

established a permanent scholarship fund in his honor. The

fund supports an award for students enrolled in an academic

or technological program that will lead to a career in the

construction industry.

The 2015 recipient of the Wendell Steward Scholarship, Caleb

McLendon, hopes to be a residential builder just like Marvin

Haworth, a Moore-based builder with more than four decades in

the industry.

“I am very humbled and grateful for this support to pursue my

dreams,” Caleb says. “The scholarship really motivates me that

much more to accomplish my goals.”

Caleb, a graduate of Southmoore High School, is currently

attending Oklahoma City Community College and would like to

one day earn a degree in construction management.

Helping Others have an Opportunity of a LifetimeAt age six, Harold Schmid entered the

foster care system in California following

the death of his mother. After five foster

placements, Harold found his forever

home with the Moore family. Following

his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Harold

moved to Oklahoma where he met his

future wife, Betty. The couple wed and

both graduated from what was then

Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater.

Harold worked for Phillips Petroleum for 35 years.

Harold’s experience led his son, Robert, to establish the Harold

Schmid Scholarship Fund at the Oklahoma City Community

Foundation in 2014. Harold and Betty have also contributed to the

fund that supports scholarships for those who are aging out of the

Oklahoma foster care system and want to

further their education.

In 2015, Christopher Whitton, a

graduate of Perkins-Tryon High

School, was the first Harold Schmid

Scholarship recipient. Thanks to the

award, Christopher has been able

to continue his studies in computer

and information sciences at Meridian

Technology Center in Stillwater. He would like to one day work

in the information technology field.

“When I graduate I’m going to feel accomplished,” he says. “I will

have all the tools and confidence I need to make a difference in

this world and be able to help people.”

Honoring a Friend through Scholarships Aaron Alley was a caring young man who

loved people and excelled in academics.

After graduating from Woodward High

School, he attended Oklahoma State

University before serving a two-year

church mission. Aaron went on to

receive a bachelor’s degree in zoology

from Brigham Young University and

attended the University of Oklahoma

College of Medicine. In 2003, Aaron

died at the age of 28 from brain cancer. Following his death, his

high school classmates decided that a memorial scholarship in

his honor would be a fitting tribute to

their friend. They established the Aaron

Alley Memorial Scholarship Fund to

support awards for graduating seniors of

Woodward High School.

Katie Warnick was awarded the Aaron

Alley Memorial scholarship in 2015 and is

now a student at Southwestern Oklahoma

State University. Katie is taking classes in

pharmaceutical science and is working toward a longtime dream

of hers to one day be a pharmacist.

Honoring Students for Nearly a CenturyThe Classen Awards program dates

back to the 1920s when Oklahoma City

civic leader and real estate developer

Anton Classen established the awards to

honor the highest achieving ninth grade

student at Classen Junior High. After

Mr. Classen’s death in 1922, his wife Ella

continued the program with awards for

seniors in high school. Following her

death, past award winners established

a trust at a local bank to continue funding the awards. In 1998,

the Classen Awards Foundation transferred the trust’s assets

to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. A scholarship

endowment was established to fund two annual awards for

graduating seniors of Classen School

of Advanced Studies and Northwest

Classen High School.

In 2015, Cara Clear was one of two

Classen Awards Foundation Scholarship

recipients. A graduate of Northwest

Classen High School, Cara is attending

Oklahoma State University - OKC and is

pursuing a degree in management.

“I had no way of paying for college without the scholarship,” Cara

says. “It was my motivation for pursing my degree and to keep

setting goals for myself.”

“Because of the generous scholarship, my financial stress has been lifted graciously and will allow me to focus more on my education. I aspire to one day be able to give back to my community and help students achieve their dreams as you all have helped me.”

How to Establish a Scholarship EndowmentEndowed Scholarship Fund OpportunitiesThe Oklahoma City Community Foundation administers more

than 120 fully endowed scholarship funds in the state’s largest

independent scholarship program. The minimum balance for

a fully-endowed, uniquely-named scholarship fund is $40,000

and can be accumulated over time and come from more than

one donor. If you are considering establishing a scholarship fund,

we recommend you first review our Scholarship Directory at

occf.org/directory to see if you can accomplish your charitable

goals through an existing endowed fund.

Four Questions to Consider Before Establishing a Scholarship Fund:1. What is the purpose of the scholarship fund?

Examples:

• Encourage students

• Promote a professional field

• Memorialize or honor a loved one

2. What criteria will be used in selecting the recipient?

Examples:

• Academic merit

• Financial need

• Community service

• Contest or award winner

3. What value will the award have and is it a one-time award or

an award a student can re-apply for in subsequent years?

Minimum award amount is $2,000

4. What roles will you have?

Examples:

• Donor only

• Selection committee member

• Participate in public presentation of award to recipient

IRS RequirementsThe Oklahoma City Community Foundation ensures that

the scholarship criteria and administrative processes for all

scholarship funds are in compliance with IRS regulations

regarding charitable funds. As a result, our Trustees:

• Assure that the promotion and selection process is fair, equitable

and nondiscriminatory.

• Have final approval regarding all scholarship recipient selections.

• Assure expenditure control over all disbursements. (All

scholarship disbursements are transmitted directly to the

scholarship recipient’s educational institution.)

Future Scholarship Opportunities

Since 1997, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation has administered the Irene P. and Samuel E. Frierson Educational Trust

scholarships in conjunction with the Bank of Oklahoma Trust Department. The endowed scholarship fund was established through the

couple’s wills by the trustees of the Frierson Educational Trust and supports the Community Foundation Scholars program. (See page 4

for more information about Irene P. and Samuel E. Frierson).

Only former recipients of the Community Scholars or New Opportunities Scholar awards who are attending a college, university or

vocational school in Oklahoma are eligible to apply for the Frierson Educational Trust Scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship,

qualifying students must also have good academic standing and have financial need. Each spring, the Oklahoma City Community

Foundation staff invites eligible students to apply. Students may apply for their second, third or fourth year after high school graduation.

In the past, approximately one-third of eligible applicants have received at least one Frierson Educational Trust scholarship in one of

their subsequent years. The scholarship award amount varies and the deadline to apply is June 1.

Below are steps to apply:

1. Receive email invitation to apply to the Frierson Educational Trust.

2. Log on to AcademicWorks and complete/update online application

and reflection statement.

3. Complete the Community Foundation survey form.

4. Send an official transcript that includes collegiate spring semester

grades.

5. Include a copy of the Student Aid Report from FAFSA.

Contact Rick Fernandez at [email protected] or 405/606-2919 if you have any questions.

As a “community” foundation we accept gifts from a wide range of local individuals, families, businesses and organizations to benefit existing endowments or create new funds. There are more than 800 community foundations in the United States. We were established in 1969 by community leaders as a way for anyone to make a lasting difference through charitable giving and for the benefit of the community both now and in the future. We are a 501(c)(3) public charity that offers the maximum tax benefit for charitable giving. Want to learn more about us? Please visit www.occf.org.
