2. From the background fabric, cut a 22 x 22" square. Fold the square into quarters and press, lightly. This will create guildelines for positioning the appliques. Place straight edges of complete 1/4-round template along folds of fabric and cut around the scalloped edge, ONLY. Cut a 17 x 17" square from the binding fabric. The remain-ing fabric will be used for appliqués.

3.Trace the applique templates onto the paper side of your fusible adhesive leaving approximately ½” between tracings.Trace the dashed stitching and placement lines also, if desired.

4. Roughly cut the templates from the adhesive just outside of the traced line.

5. Place the adhesive templates onto the wrong side of their corresponding appliqué fabrics and fuse in placeaccording to manufacturer’s instructions.

6. Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced template lines.

7. Transfer the dashed stitching lines to the right side of the fabric with a non-permanent pen or pencil, if desired. You can use a light table or daylit window.

8. Peel the paper backing from the appliqués and arrange them on the background piece. Fuse appliquésinto place.

9. Place the Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer behind the appliqués and satin stitch the raw edges of the appliqués, using Sulky Premium 40 wt rayon thread. Remove the stabilizer after stitching.

10. Sandwich batting between top and backing with wrong sides of fabrics against batting.

11. Quilt as desired. I used a straight stitch, in matching thread, around each appliqué’s satin stitching and the marked gridlines on the ice cream cones. I quilted a meandering path on the background.

12. Refer to the bias binding page for instructions on making a continuous bias binding strip. Bind, as usual, using this strip.

1. Refer to the 1/8-round template pages for instructions to make a whole template for cutting the background/scalloped quilt top.

Trace and cut eight of each ice cream cone appliqué template.

All appliqués are printed in reverse for fusing onto the wrong sides of your appliqué fabrics.

Dashed lines indicate placement, overlap of appliqués, or a stitching line.

Continuous Bias Binding Instructions

Create a continuous bias binding strip, economically.

Cut 17 x 17" bias binding fabric square in half once diagonally (45 degree angle). Place two triangular pieces right sides together along straight edge as shown in Illustration A. Using a ¼"-wide seam allowance sew triangle pieces together. Press.

Using a gridded transparent ruler, measure from the long edge and draw a parallel line every 2¼" on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown in Illustration B.

Fold the marked piece right sides together to form a tube, aligning the edges and pinning the marked lines so one width of the binding extends beyond the edge on each side as shown in Illustration C. Sew the tube together and press the seam open. Cut on the marked line to make one continuous 2¼" wide bias binding strip.

Use this strip to bind any curved edges.
