JD

STANDERTON - A Sakhile policeman responded to an accident scene on 4 Octo-ber in Extension Four, at about 19:00 when he received word over the police radio that some of the passengers were already taken to a nearby clinic. He then went to the clinic and was introduced to a 29-year-old female passenger as well as another lady that alleged that she was also a pas-senger in one of the vehicles. The sister who was on duty at the clinic also showed the policeman a man that had already suc-cumbed to his wounds. The police later arrested the driver of one of the vehicles and took him to Standerton Hospital for blood tests. Cases of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol was opened and are under investigation. JD

KVD-reaksiemag trek klerediewe vas

Accident claims one lifeSTANDERTON - A local pensioner saw an advertisement on the street calling all people with ailments to go to a traditional healer for a miracle cure. Suffering from cancer, he decided to go to the consulting room address in a block of flats in Beyers Naudé Street.

When the man came to the door of the so-called consultation rooms on Friday, 30 October, he was welcomed by a smooth talking traditional healer. The 62-year-old pensioner was examined with bones, and the healer prescribed “muti” for his cancer. The topic soon changed to money and fortune. The traditional healer allegedly told the old man that he possesses magical powers that would double any amount of money placed in a black pot.

The pensioner told police that although it is unusual for a white man to believe in traditional healers and the use of muti, he grew up in the rural areas and witnessed traditional healers performing miracles, so he was easily convinced by the muti man. The

cancer sufferer and healer both agreed to put R150 to the test. It would then supposedly double to R300 within hours inside of the miraculous money-pot.

The pensioner claimed that he was instructed to come back six hours after paying the money. He went back at 21:30 that evening and found that the consultation rooms were then locked with anti-burglar doors and vacated.

He made several calls to the provided number he had used earlier to communicate with the healer, but it went to voicemail. Lieutenant Johannes Nhlabathi confirmed that the pensioner opened a case of robbery at the police station on Wednesday, 4 November. He produced proof of the withdrawn cash on Friday, 31 October.

The Police are investigating a case of robbery. Lieutenant Nhlabathi has once again warned people to stay vigilant as scammers come in all shapes and sizes to rob unsuspecting victims. DM

JD

STANDERTON - On Sunday, 1 November, a 36-year-old man was sitting at home when a lady came to visit. She allegedly knocked very hard on the door and when the resident opened the door, she asked him and his wife to go outside. The guest then accused the man of exhuming her baby’s body. A fight broke out and the man was hit by the lady as well as by her friends who

accompanied her.During the fight the man sustained a blow to the

neck and lost consciousness, but when he regained his consciousness again, everyone was gone. A case of assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm was opened and is under investigation by the Sakhile police. JD

Veediewe loop hul rieme styf

Haar uit-latings is in landboukringe skerp gekritiseer.

Kersfees kom, Kersfees kom...

Kyk weer!”.

Meyergesin.

PROVINCIAL - Chronic staff shortages in the Mpumalanga Department of Health are denying the citizens of this province access to 79 new emergency service vehicles valued at over R43 million that were purchased in the last two financial years.

The ambulances have been gathering dust at the dealership due to the department’s fail-ure to appoint much-needed Emergency Med-ical Services (EMS) personnel. The depart-ment has claimed that they are in the process of appointing 113 operational staff members but only 20 paramedics have been appointed to date.

In order to make full use of these vehicles, the department needs 325 personnel, 90 to fully staff 98 ambulances. 176 are needed to increase the number of operational ambu-lances from 90 to 120 and 60 to establish a Planned Patient Transport service which cur-rently does not exist and as a result, current EMS staff is expected to carry out this func-tion as well.

The DA went on an oversight visit to the dealership and found that the newest fleet that has been procured has been gathering dust for

months. Given the shortage of ambulances in the province, this is unacceptable. In April this year, the department announced that they had purchased 47 EMS vehicles which in-clude 30 ambulances, three 23-seater Planned Patient Transport Services (PPTS) as well as 14 all-terrain response vehicles. This fleet was purchased for over R21 million from the 2014/15 financial year’s budget.

Once again, under the leadership of Health MEC, Gillion Mashego, the department’s in-ability to manage its finances, has resulted in its mandate of providing access to primary healthcare taking a backseat.

The DA reiterates its call for MEC Mashego to step down because his gross neglect of the Health department is severely impacting the lives of millions of Mpumalanga citizens whose lives are dependent on government for access to healthcare.

The lack of political will and inability to act decisively has compromised the department so severely that the only corrective measure is to remove MEC Mashego. (Media state-ment by Jane Sithole, MPL, Spokesperson on Health) JD

R43 mil worth of ambulances gathering dust

79 Emergency vehicles, valued at over R43 million, were purchased by the Mpumalan-ga Department of Health, and due to the department’s failure to appoint much needed emergency personnel, these vehicles are gathering dust and are not being utilized.

“While driving on a rural end of the road-way I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check. “There are several things to be aware of: Gangs and thieves are now plotting diffe-rent ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car.

“There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs place a car seat next to the road, with a fake baby in it, wait-ing for a woman to stop and check on the abandoned baby. “Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the potential vic-tim would then be dragged into the woods,

beaten and possibly raped, and usually left for dead.

If it’s a man, they’re usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, as well. Do not stop for any reason. Dial 112, or your local CPF or reaction unit and report what you see. Do not even slow down.

If you are driving at night and eggs are thrown at your windscreen, do not stop to check the car, do not operate the wiper and do not spray any water because eggs mixed with water become milky and will block your vision up to 92.5%, and you will then be forced to stop beside the road and become a victim of these criminals. These are new techniques used by crimi-nals, so please inform your friends and rela-tives.

These are desperate times and these are unsavoury individuals who will take any means necessary to get what they want.”

Please talk to your loved ones about this. Please be safe. JD

New hijacking tactic aims to foolCriminals are now placing dolls in a baby seat next to the road in an attempt to get motorists to stop. These motorists are then beaten, raped or even killed and their be-longings, stolen. No matter how hard it is, do not stop. Drive away and report the incident immedi-ately to your local police force or reaction unit. (Photo: Newborn doll in baby seat – Google)

Mpumalanga main screening a huge success

STANDERTON - Lekwa Local Municipality hosted a screening campaign on Friday, 6 November at the Town Hall. Residents were urged to undergo screen-ing and testing for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. The day-long programme attracted hundreds of resi-dents who voluntarily joined the queue to be tested. A special convoy of Novo Nordisk Cyclists for Di-abetes Relay from Johannesburg rode on bicycles to Standerton to support the event and also took part in the programme to highlight the plight of the silent kill-er that is spreading globally like wildfire. Dr Timmy Kedijang, of Novo Nordisk, outlined the purpose of the event. He told the audience that diabetes is incurable and that there is no scientifically proven medication that

can cure it. However early detection can allow for control of the disease. He also said that some early signs of diabetes are poor sight leading to blindness, weight gain, fatigue and a lack of appetite. He said four million South Af-ricans suffer from sugar diabetes and half of that is not even aware of their status. He continued by saying that the Novo Nordisk Cy-cle Relay is held around the country to embark on an awareness campaign. Amongst the dignitaries who graced the occasion was Ms V Moodley, Director of National Health Promo-tion, Mr I Setlhare, National Manager for Chronic Dis-eases and Ms S Gumede, Director of Non-communica-ble Disease, Mpumalanga Department of Health. Books donated to senior citizens

Counsellor Busi Sikhonde handing over the donation of books and magazines to Ms Wieka Cilliers, Mr Koos Swart, HOD Makasas Radebe, and the Home-manager, Paula Borges.

STANDERTON - Lekwa Local Municipality brought smiles to the senior citizens’ faces at the old age home in Mbonani Mayisela Street on Wednesday morning last week. The donation of 550 books in both English and Afrikaans was celebrated as early Christmas by the senior citizens who spend many hours without having anything to do. Mr Koos Swart a long time resident of the nursing home, has become a self-made librarian due his passion for reading was de-lighted that he will now have new books in the home’s bookshelves as he has already worn out almost every book in the library.

The municipality’s Head of Community Safety and Security, Ms Makasas Radebe, was accompanied by MMC Counsellor Busi Sik-honde, and said that the municipality has gathered a collection of books to boost the readership in the older community. She was quick to add that an old age home in Sakhile will receive the same quantity of books on Thursday morning.

Ms Paula Borges, Manager of the old age home, expressed her gratitude to the Lekwa Local Municipality for the gift that will re-main a testimony of love and care for the senior citizens. DM

NATIONAL - Parliament went into a raucous after an EFF member was called a Teletubby during a debate on university fees. “Who are you calling a Teletubby?” demanded Mmabatho Mokause, standing up in the bright red attire that her party wears in Parliament.

Earlier, when DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, went to the podium, somebody had called him a “sell-out”. An attempt was be-ing made to find out who had called Maimane a sell-out when DA MP John Steenhuisen waved his hand seemingly in the direction of the EFF benches and said: “Ask that Tele-tubby over there.”

An annoyed Mokause complained: This man stood here and called one member a Teletubby.”

After the debate, Speaker Baleka Mbete, wanted to know who had called

Maimane “a sell-out” and when all she got was blank faces, she moved on to root out the person who had made the Teletubby remark.

“Were you referring to a specific member of this house?” asked Mbete. Steenhuisen re-plied: “Madam Speaker, I couldn’t work out if it was Tinky-Winky, Laa-laa or Po, but I withdraw.” Almost instantly, pictures of the cooing characters who toddle around a make-believe land with television antennae on their heads started doing the rounds on Twitter.
