Reading Buddies This week saw the first Reading Buddies session of the term, when children from Key Stage 2 chose a book to read to their ‘Buddy’ class in the lower school. The children all had a fantastic time and are looking forward to their next session.

One-to-one Music Tuition Availability A space may be available soon for instrument tuition (clarinet, saxophone, flute or guitar). This is a wonderful opportunity to learn an instrument, read music and build confidence with our talented and experienced teacher, Mr Bartels. Musical tuition could also lead to highly regarded music examinations. The London Marathon A parent of a child in Upper Kindergarten is running the London Marathon in April this year, details are below. Just as temperatures plummet my excitement is rising at the prospect of the running the London Marathon next April. I am running for the charity MACS (the Micro and Anophthalmic Children's Society). This is the UK's national charity for children born without eyes or undeveloped eyes. I became aware of this great charity through the landlady of my local pub. Her grandson was born around the some time as my daughter, Annabel. He is an inspiration. If you would like to sponsor me I have set up a site at www.virginmoneygiving.com/DavidBaird46. Many thanks in advance. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Another Headmistress’ Award Well done to Samuel Epstein in Year 4 who received a Headmistress’ Award for his wonderful work on Pablo Picasso. This task was part of his weekend homework and all the research was done by Samuel. Congratulations Samuel on a fantastic piece of work.

History in Year 5 and a Headmistress’ Award Year 5 were studying coins as part of history. They looked at Mrs Lane’s collection of old pennies from Victoria - Elizabeth II. They also studied the recent news article of the man who with the help of his metal detector discovered thousands of coins from King Ethlered The Unready and Canutes reigns, in a field in Buckinghamshire. This sparked their imaginations and resulted in many interesting stories based on “A Penny”. Here is an example.

Pia the Penny by Pia Gabrielli Hi my name is Pia the Penny I am in a money box now but what adventures I have had. Here is one of my adventures. I was in the purple purse of a girl who was going shopping to Westfield with her Christmas money. First she had lunch but then the adventures started. She went into Zara (a clothes shop) and when she went in the lift she did a terrible thing. She opened the purse!!! I fell out! I screamed “Arrh!” She didn’t hear, she didn’t care, I am just a one penny, the one that people see and pick up off the floor. Whilst her five and ten pound notes are all comfy in her purple purse, I was in a lift! Stuck in a lift! I am never going to get out I thought but I did. I was in the lift for about five days. The lift broke and a man came to fix it. He was a fat man with chubby cheeks and a small nose and big lips. He stomped when he walked, he made the lift shake and wobble like when a volcano that is going to erupt. He got a long knife and put it down the hole, he luckily got me out. He said I was the problem. He said I was a nice looking coin so he took me back to his house and gave me to his daughter. Now I am in a big, pink, piggy money box! Well done to Pia who received a Headmistress’s award for a lovely piece of work.

Squash Star! England Squash Ranking On Saturday 10th to the 11th January I played in a tournament in Ipswich. I was chosen in October 2014 to play and join the Essex Junior Squad. I played a tournament at Kingswood in November 2014 and won. The Essex coach leader asked my Mum if I could enter the England Squash and Racket Ball tournament in Ipswich. The idea of this tournament was to get an England Squash Ranking which only happens every couple of months. I played in the girls under 11s. I played four matches on Saturday and two on Sunday. I came third overall and I played England’s top six girls. My match against England’s number 1, who is an excellent player, was tough. I enjoyed playing against her and we had a very competitive match but unfortunately I lost, the scores were 11-7, 11-8, 11-9 so it was a close match. I have only ever had three private lessons for squash and have only been playing properly since September 2014 because tennis has been my priority. Over the weekend I stayed in a hotel called ‘The Salthouse’ it was a very nice place. It was by a harbour with lots of boats. I have been asked to go to Colchester next month by Essex Junior Squash to have an intense training day before I go off to Manchester to represent Essex and play all the other counties in England. I will find out my ranking position next month for where I am in England under 11s girls. By Brooke Smith - Year 5

FOCHS Update Happy New Year to everyone – we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas break and are ready for the year ahead! We’re sure that 2015 is going to be full of great events and fun activities for the children (and some for the parents!). Tuck Shop got off to a great start last Friday and thank you to all those who came along. It’s a lovely way for the children to round off the week. Next on the agenda is a Movie Night which is being planned for the children from Transition to Year 6 on Friday 6 February. Tuck Shop will be incorporated into this and the price of a ticket will cover the cost of a drink and a snack. More details to follow shortly... We would love to hold a fund raising evening for parents later this term – we have talked about a quiz night, wine tasting or perhaps a beauty night where mums (or dads!) can pre-book treatments and have a glass of wine and a chat at the same time... we would welcome any ideas or comments that you might have so that we can gauge levels of interest and plan more effectively. As ever, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the postbox in Reception, via email to [email protected] or in person if you’d like to be involved in any way. We would love to hear from you!
