~ 5 ~ 2.0 Brief About the Division: 2.1 Nagpur City: Nagpur, winter capital of Maharashtra, is the largest city in central India and third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. With a population of 46,53,171 (2011), Nagpur is the 9th largest urban conglomeration in India. It has also recently been ranked as the second greenest city of India after Bangalore. In addition to being the seat of annual Winter Session of Maharashtra State assembly "VidhanSabha", Nagpur is also a major commercial and political center of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It is also famous as "Orange City" for being a major trade center of oranges that are cultivated in the region. Nagpur lies on the Deccan plateau of the Indian Peninsula and has a mean altitude of 310 meters above sea level. Nagpur lies precisely at the center of the country with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the geographical center of India. The city was founded by the Gonds but later it became part of the Maratha Empire under the Bhonsles. The British East India Company took over Nagpur in the 19th century and made it the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. After the first re-organization of states, the city lost its capital status but according to the informal "Nagpur Pact" between political leaders it was made the second capital of Maharashtra. Nagpur is also declared as "Tiger Capital of India” being gate way to many Tiger Reserves in India. Economy: MIDC, Hingna, is a sprawling Industrial Estate having more than 900 small and medium industrial units. The prominent ones are tractor manufacturing plant of Mahindra and Mahindra, the casting units of NECO Ltd, the country's biggest casting group, besides units of International Combustions, Bajaj group, Candico, Ajanta toothbrushes, and Vicco Laboratories. A new industrial estate, billed as one of the largest in the country, has come up at Butibori, some 28 KMs. to the South of Nagpur. Its biggest unit is Indo Rama Synthetics (investment over Rs 2500 crore) that manufactures synthetic polyester yarn. Nagpur also has a number of other textile units, coal-based power plants, coal mines of WCL, cement manufacturing units, coal & manganese mines in its vicinity. The Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Nagpur being run by CONCOR is among the fastest growing ICD in the country. Nagpur's central geographical location has led to plans to establish a multi-modal cargo hub. It is to have a Special Economic Zone attached that is already attracting investment by some of the top-notch IT companies of India including Infosys and Wipro. Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN) at Nagpur is the biggest economical development project currently underway in India in terms of investment. MIHAN is a project spread over an area of 4354 Hectares consisting of two parts namely International airport to act as a cargo hub and a Special Economic Zone with residential zone covering a total area of 40.25 sq. km. Aircraft major Boeing is setting up their Aircraft Maintenance Unit of the Boeing Corporation at Nagpur. Nagpur Metro is an under construction rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur. The project was approved in Feb‟2014. 2.0 Brief About the Division:

2.1 Nagpur City:

Nagpur, winter capital of Maharashtra, is the largest city in central India and third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. 2.2 Development of Railway System:

stations across eight districts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. 11 tunnels and two major Ghat sections with ruling gradient these are of 1:60 (rising) and 1:65 (falling) in Itarsi-Nagpur Section. In addition, there are 35 sidings in the division having 176.912 km route length

Nagpur division has GT Route from Itarsi to Ballarshah (of 508 Kms length, fit for 120 Kmph speed) and Mumbai-Howrah route from Nagpur to Badnera.North-South and East-West traffic criss-crosses through the Division, making its Nagpur-Wardha section as one of the busiest section in Indian Railways. It has 3 branch lines connecting Amla-Chhindwara, Narkhed-Amravati & Majri-Pimpalkutti on Broad Gauge and one branch line Pulgaon-Arvi in Narrow Guage.

2.3 Heritage station building of Nagpur:

The original railway station of Nagpur was located towards the east of its current site near Shukravari Lake. The present-day railway station of Nagpur was also put up in the pre-independence days.

Nagpur Railway station is one of the oldest and busiest Station. The beautiful heritage structure of Nagpur station was inaugurated in its present form on Jan 15th , 1925 by the then Governor Sir Frank and is a monument of pride for Nagpur as well as Central Railway. This station building has completed its 92 years in this month.

This grand structure was built from Pink Sand Stone brought from Saoner a village near to Nagpur. The tall columns and pillars add great beauty to the building and it is considered among the most beautiful built by the British not only in India but all over the world

This grand, Pink Sand Stone Building, is an engineering marvel and a site to behold. It is witness to manifold increase in passenger traffic year after year, with about 1 lac foot falls daily at present. Original beauty of this magnificent building is kept as it is. The beauty of the arches, murals and the facade, have been highlighted by skilful lighting.

Nagpur being at the heart of India has always been a significant station. Today 100+ mail/ express trains and 182 goods trains pass through it every day. It is divisional H.Q. of two Railway: Central Railway and South Eastern Central Railway.

2.4 Important Milestones:

1866 - Laying of First Railway Line of NGP division in BD – SNI section

1906 - Laying of foundation stone of existing Building of NGP Station

1922 - Completion of Double Line in NGP division

1925 - Inauguration of NGP station Building.

1989 - First train on AC Traction – 2616 ( now12616) on NGP-BPQ route (11th Sept)

1990 - 1st WAG-5 loco of ELS, Ajni commissioned (22nd Oct)

1991 - Completion of Electrification of all Main Line Routes on NGP Division

1993 - Completion of Doubling in NGP division

2004 - Commissioning of 140 T Crane (7th Sept)

2011 - Wheel Impact Load Detector commissioned (04th Feb)

2011 - Commissioning of PFT at Lloyds Steel Siding (2nd July)

2014 - Commissioning of PF-8 at Nagpur station. (13TH Jan)

2014 - 200th loco commissioned in ELS, Ajni (5th July)

2015 - Majri Chord line opened for PassengerTraffic (12.Dec.‟15)

2016 - Commissioning of DLI PFT

2016 - Commissioning of panel at Junnardeo, Chichonda & Parasia.

2.6 Freight Traffic :

Major share of Originating Freight traffic comes from coal sidings of WCL located at Ghuggus, Ballarshah, Chandrapur, Wani, Majri, Umrer, Hirdagarh, Palachauri and Parasia. Loading of other commodities like cement, clinker, Iron and steel and DOC also contributes to freight traffic. Coal is the major commodity loaded by the division. Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) is the major contributor. Cement is loaded by ACC cement from Ghuggus. Ultratech and Ambuja Cement loads from the PFT located at PVIT. Movement of coal rakes from South Eastern Coalfields to powerhouses of CR & WR and empties to SECR takes place. Within the division, coal is moved to Power houses of Chandrapur, Sarni, PWCL/Warora, PMEC/Chikni and MDIT/Tadali. Inland Container Depot is located at Ajni & DLI with major movement towards JNPT.

2.7 Train movement:

On an average 148 Mail/Express/ Passengers trains carrying 1 lakh passengers and 230 Freight trains runs with 192 interchange by the division daily.
