Principal’s Report
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Welcome to Week 6 Term 2
As we commence the second half of Term 2, we reflect upon what was an amazing return to full time schooling last week at Leeton Public School. The excitement as children returned to school full time was something unlike anything most of us had ever experienced before. The first day back after holidays is usually exciting, but never have children been away from school for such a long period of time and their excitement was obvious. It certainly is wonderful to have school returning to normal and students returning to the majority of in-school activities that they would normally engage in.
COVID-19 Return to School Guidelines
COVID-19 updates for the most up to date advice, please go to:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families
GUIDELINES:
All school activities and operations will be in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health guidelines as applicable.
School students do not need to follow strict adult physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like:
* regularly washing hands
* avoiding sharing drinks or food
* coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be discarded immediately
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE:
All students should be at school unless:
* they have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition
* they are currently unwell – please contact the school if you are unsure.
SCHOOL RESOURCES:
Children are requested to bring along all school resources that are required for learning. This means:
* BYOD K-6 – All students should bring their own device to school if they have completed the necessary permission slips. This should happen every day.
* We ask you to organise an individual pencil case for your child with required supplies such as lead pencils, coloured pencils, scissors and glue where possible. We still have supplies at school for students unable to bring their own.
SCHOOL UNIFORM:
Children are encouraged to wear full school uniform when they return to school on Monday, with Sports Uniform reserved for Wednesday (K-2) and Fridays (3-6) - unless otherwise advised.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:
Teachers will continue to follow the same school curriculum with the exception of some activities that can’t go ahead for now.

* Use the school library – borrowing will not recommence at Leeton PS until at least 1st June. We will communicate more about this next week.
* Engage in non-contact sporting activities – the Sports Shed will be open for the borrowing of equipment for non-contact sports from Monday.
What students can’t do:
* School assemblies (unless for critical information)
* School incursions and excursions including camps
* Inter-school activities (debating, inter-school sport)
* In-school activities requiring parent or other volunteers
* Use hydrotherapy pools
* Drink from a water bubbler – bring a water bottle instead
SCHOOL GROUNDS:
There should be no visitors to school sites unless they are essential.
PICK UP AND DROP OFF:
Our drop off times remain the same. We encourage anyone picking up a child from school to collect them between 3.10pm and 3.25pm at the two usual collections points.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year 27th May to 3rd June.
Page | 5
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey - the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week – In this together – is now resonating in ways we could not have foreseen when the theme was announced last year, but it reminds us whether in a crisis or in reconciliation we are all in this together. Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation.
At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.
As always, I would like to reiterate to all parents that if you have a concern or query regarding your child's education please make an appointment to see the relevant classroom teacher or appropriate Executive Member to further discuss the matter. Parents are asked to address any emails to our school email address. These emails will then be forwarded to the appropriate teacher. It is important that concerns be initially addressed with classroom teachers as often issues can be addressed quickly.

AURORA
Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students
The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation. (This is the process to be followed to apply for participation in the Aurora Virtual Opportunity class for year 5 2021).
We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible.
The changes include:
A new date for online applications. Parents must apply between 9th June 2020 and 26th June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.

A new test date - Wednesday 16th September 2020.
To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores.
There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight timeframes.
