TRUE BLUE: THE WARM UP TRACK RESURFACING IS COMPLETE IN THIS ISSUE

From the Editor by Aidan Hobbs

As I was filling out my application to become a member of Queensland Masters Athletics at the end of last year, I found myself experiencing an existential crisis. How could I be in the Masters category already? It was not that long ago that I was following my age group manager around between events at Little Athletics.

Twelve months later and I have come to embrace my new club and title as a Queensland Masters Athlete. There is a very strong willingness to “give it a go” amongst our members which I’ve seldom experienced since leaving Little A’s to join the open ranks.

I’m reminded of a conversation I had recently with past QMA president, Irene Davey as she shared with me her passion for the steeplechase and desire to get more Masters athletes involved.

Sure enough, at a recent Queensland Athletics hurdles workshop I bumped into fellow QMA athlete Kerri Hodge, who had only just run her first ever steeplechase this year. We did our best

to blend in amongst the teenage athletes with their impeccable form over the hurdles but no matter how hard we tried, the steeplechasers stuck out like a sore thumb.

In this issue, we announce the 2017/18 Track and Field Season program. In the spirit of “giving it a go”, I would like to encourage you to try an event you haven’t done before (or perhaps not for a long time). I can’t remember the last time I tried the triple jump.

You may have also noticed that in this issue there are some changes to the regular format of the Athletic Challenge. After volunteering for the editor role at the recent AGM I thought I would try out my Microsoft Office skills and update the template.

I am very keen to hear what you think about the new format, whether it be good or bad. Over the next few issues I am hoping to introduce some new sections to include more things that you want to read about. If you have any suggestions, or would like to contribute content – stories, photos or just dob in a mate for a profile, please let me know.

I hope you enjoy the SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER edition of the Athletic Challenge.

QMA Brisbane Competition Competition day volunteers needed

Most QMA Brisbane members will be aware that Ian Mann has retired from being the Meet Manager guru. He has trained up a team to carry out this vital role on our competition days.

September 30 will be their first ‘real’ experience. Please be patient about results, etc.

Also, Paul Chaplain has retired from the registration desk role he has

carried out so capably for some years. We need a volunteer (or several people to take it in turns) to handle this vital role.

Money handling experience would be an advantage. Please contact Brisbane secretary if you are willing to give it a go.

History: Queensland Veterans Athletic Club / Queensland Masters Athletics Association Inc.

The Beginning

An inaugural Meeting to form the Queensland Veterans Athletic Club was called by some competing athletes with the purpose of starting an Athletic Club to organize competition for older athletes.

It was moved by J.Bailey and seconded by D.Frawley that the QAAA be asked if the Club could use maroon singlets with white shorts.

It was moved by E.Goodwin and seconded by J.Cook that the Club have a registration fee of $5.00 per member for the first year of membership and the subsequent years’ registrations be decided by the Executive Committee.
