Hello, My name is Tobias Overdiek and this presentation is meant to be a brief introduction, to perhaps gain your interest by displaying some of my talents. I’d gladly discuss more details or answer any questions by phone, email, or in person. Thank you for your time and interest in advance.

Contents Overview: 1.) Design work completed while chief engineer for the 2011 UTA Formula Hybrid

student built race car, winner of the GM “Best in Design” award during competition, responsible for designing BLDC in wheel electric motors coupled with planetary transmission gear boxes, as well as ground work, development and research for all other systems including cooling, batteries, controls, safety, and electrical systems.

2.) Design work completed for the UTA FSAE team 2009-2012 3.) Personal automotive background 4.) Management & Inventory systems design during Motorsport Team employment 5.) Brief FEA introduction during employment at Twister Trailers 6.) Additional hobbies

UTA Formula Hybrid – Chief Engineer

At the beginning of 2010, UTA Racing had suffered another failed attempt of starting an alternative hybrid electric vehicle team by a group of capstone design students. When I asked my professor whether there still was a hybrid team, he promptly just asked: ”Would you like to be team captain?!” Enticed, the next day he had my yes.

The regular Formula SAE crowd wanted nothing to do with this new Hybrid vehicle. No one on the team had ever built an electric car before and finding others interested to join the challenge rather than working on the regular FSAE car seemed like a lost cause. More so, “hybrid” was dubbed to be a low performance heavy-slug mobile when compared to the high performance winged FSAE cars. Nevertheless, I was up for the challenge, even if it meant that I had to start of alone and learn everything I needed to know along the way.

Although this hybrid was destined to way at least 150lbs more than our highly toned 450lbs 600cc powered FSAE racecars, the promise to regain the performance weight penalty through fully programmable AWD, Torque vectoring, and electric acceleration aid, made it a challenge I couldn’t resist.

UTA Formula Hybrid – Chief EngineerThe next 18 months of my life were spent on developing motors, gearboxes, electrical systems, control logic, batteries, the list never ended, to retrofit a previous FSAE car into a hybrid electric vehicle.

The wheel motors alone went through 25+ complete iteration stages, starting of with 5 hp direct drive 70lbs monster-weight motors, to ending up with an 18hp planetary geared 28lb in wheel package, which at the time of competition was unheard of for student design. However, the designed motors were never ordered. The team had decided in an attempt to meet a deadline to change the motors, regardless of my recommendations and insights not to. The results was a much lower performance package, which nevertheless still outdrove and overlapped the next best car at the competition at a 2:3 lap ratio.

Here are a few of the early motor/gear box iterations. Some were more complete than others, all use specked parts, bearings, seals, etc, with the intent of full assembly/manufacturability.
