Assessment Task 1Developing as an Engineer (15%)(Activities as set by your tutor)

Throughout the semester you will be evaluated on the development of your communicationskills. You will be provided with many opportunities to demonstrate these skills.

During the first two weeks, your tutor will outline a number of small assessable tasks thatyou will complete in-class, online or at home as you progress through the subjectmaterials. These tasks will differ across the tutorial groups. However, the tasks selectedwill all measure your development in communication within an engineering setting.

The subject outline provides a list of the types of activities that may be included.Remember if you miss a class, you miss an opportunity to demonstrate your development.

    Write the assessable tasks:

    EWB ChallengeThe big picture

All students enrolled in Engineering Communication will participate in the Engineerswithout Borders (EWB) Challenge.

The EWB Challenge is a design program for first year university students coordinated byEngineers without Borders Australia. It provides students with an opportunity to learnabout design, teamwork and communication through real-life and inspiring sustainablecross-cultural development projects. By participating in the EWB Challenge you will bepresented with a fantastic opportunity to design creative solutions to problems identified byreal EWB projects.

In past years, the EWB Challenge has included developing innovative and sustainableproject ideas and solutions to support communities in India, Cambodia and rural Australia.

In 2013, your design brief will require you to develop and report on your design solution fora specified problem based in Timor Leste in the town of Codo in the Lospalos sub-district.

EWB works in partnership with PLAN and its sponsors to identify problems and developdesign areas for which solutions are required. The broad design areas are:

    Infrastructure and Construction

    Water Supply and Sanitation Systems

    Energy

    Waste Management

    Climate Change

    Transportation Information Communications Technology

These are real engineering problems and your contribution towards a solution may help toimprove the living conditions for the districts inhabitants. Your team will select one areabased on the interests and disciplinary expertise of the group. Detail for each design areais available on UTSOnline and your tutor will direct you to the relevant links.

The assessment tasks and the related weekly modules are designed to support you andyour team in developing your project. You will work individually and in groups to createyour design solution and produce an engineering report and presentation that effectivelycommunicates your ideas. The EWB Challenge is designed for you to integrate expertiseyou develop in other subjects.

At the end of semester, up to four team submissions will be nominated by UTS for reviewby EWB. All participating universities across Australia and New Zealand will nominateteams. Outstanding student teams from each region will be invited to present their work atthe EWB Regional Showcase events where their work will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary panel of judges. The top team in each region will be invited to present theirwork at the National Challenge Showcase to be held in December 2013.

Dont hold back. Be creative and you w il l see the difference you c an make.

    Task 2: Background Research

Effective design solutions are based on a firm understanding of the cultural,

economic, social and environmental context of the problem.

This task is made up of a number of sub-tasks designed for you to collect your backgroundinformation. Each task will be completed and submitted individually. However, teamdiscussions are important to understanding the context of the problem. Students areencouraged to discuss and share information both in class and via the communicationchannels outlined by your tutor.

In Week 3, your tutor will organise you into a team. You will remain in this team throughoutthe semester and the life of the project. Your team will consist of 4 - 6 members. Onceyour team has selected a design area you will then decide on a specific project. Thedesign brief for each area has suggestions but your group may elect to investigate anotherproject. Discuss this with your tutor.

Your team will decide on a project and give it a title:

Specific details for each assessment tasks are provided in the subject outline. Following

    are a few additional points:

Task 2a (i) requires you to locate a reliable academic article outlining aspects of thecultural, economic, social and environmental context of the district. The information can begeneral at this stage as you are looking to orientate yourself with the types of potentialproblems and solutions that may be required.

Task 2a (ii) requires you to do a little more research. Someone in your team may havealready found appropriate information or look at other community development programsin other countries to get some ideas. The focus article should be included in this task.

Task 2a (iii)requires you to develop design requirements and a measurement template.Look online for some ideas or view other engineering reports. Test one design found foryour technical review against a minimum of three to five design requirements.

Task 2bthis task requires you to orally present the ideas and information you have foundand developed. You will find tips on making oral presentations in your workbook andonline.

On completion of these sub-tasks, you should have the information required to contributeto your team discussions and help in the decision-making and problem solving processes. These tasks will provide material for the completion of the first section of your written team

    report.

The following pages are assessment sheets for all tasks to be submitted for Task 2.

Task 3 EWB Challenge Team Report

Your great ideas must be communicated effectively if they are to make

    a difference.

Your team will have decided on their design area and developed a project idea. All workcompleted for the sub-tasks in Task 3 will be completed and submitted as a team effort.

Completion of a team charter, outlining the agreed management of your team project, isessential to your teams group processes and ensures a common understanding of theexpectations of each team member.

Throughout Task 3 you should consider your contribution to the team and the contributionof others to the project. Towards the end of the task you will be asked to complete a selfand peer evaluation online. This assessment will be completed using SPARK software.

The assessment sheets for each task are provided. Each gives marking criteria whichshould act as a checklist for what to include and what to develop in your EWB report.

Task 3a (i) requires your team to submit a project proposal. This should be a briefstatement outlining what the team intends to do. A good proposal will provide your tutorwith a statement of the problem and context and a clear action plan. Point form isappropriate for this task. Suggested headings are provided in the subject outline.

The proposal will be submitted electronically (email or discussion board). You mustnegotiate a method and time with your tutor. Your team will need to elect a representativeto submit the proposalyour tutor must only receive one per team.

Task 3a (ii) requires you to submit an engineering report providing the details of yourproject in a form appropriate to the EWB Challenge. You will find a suggested template foryour report online. You may need to adapt the format to suit your particular project. It isimportant to become familiar with the various styles of reporting. Examples of engineeringreports can be found online and in the text books for this subject. The report structure used

is critical in communicating your ideas effectively.

Task 3b requires your team to present its project ideas orally. Each team member willcontribute to a coordinated and logically organised presentation. The development ofslides, to provide key points, is important to this task.

Make use of the feedback provided for Task 2b. It is a good idea to rehearse your teampresentation. Remember this is a professional presentation and you may be asked torepeat it in other forums.
