CONGRATULATIONS TO ABRAHAM ELIZALDE AND YZABELLA GIGANTONE! We are so proud of our 8th graders! Our Mr. Abraham Elizalde was “Accepted with honors” to St. Genevieve High School which means he scored more than 90% on his entrance exam. Congratulations Abraham! Miss Gigantone was also accepted to Notre Dame High School with “Academic Distinction” which means she scored 95% or better in her entrance exam. She is also the recipient of the “Holy Cross Distin-guided Student Award”. We are so proud of you both! STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, “Many . . . con-duct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things” (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). He will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (3:21). Note that he says “body” rather than “bodies.” He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the exam-ple of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. DidYouKnow? Trained adults can take steps to prevent suspicion. The Protecting God’s Children pro-gram is in place to raise awareness about behaviors of adults that may indicate a threat to the safety of chil-dren and young people. Through this program, trained adults learn how to prevent abuse from happening, in part by taking steps to eliminate suspicious behaviors, such as being alone with a young person. Creating a culture of openness and transparency goes a long way towards alleviating concerns of inappropriate behavior by adults, and helps children feel safe in their environ-ment.

Catherine’s Letters to the Future It’s a caution to all to never neglect a daily examination of conscience. Scandals in the Church have everything to do with succumbing to evil, taking up the temptations of the world and forgetting the way of the Lord. And it’s no wonder that our culture today has not found the way of the cross—or the Catholic moral teaching—compelling when a culture within some of the Church’s highest ranks wasn’t buying into it. Those making war against the tyrants in this way are not as liable to make the news, no doubt. But it is becoming in-creasingly and brutally clear that an evil rot needs to be rooted out of the life of the Church today. Writing in 1380 to Pope Urban VI, Catherine says: “You cannot with a single stroke wipe out all of the sins people in general are committing within the Christian religion, especially within the clerical order, over whom you should be even more watchful. But you certainly can and are obligated to do it, and if you don’t you would have it on your conscience. At least do what you can. You must cleanse the church’s womb—that is, see to it that those who surround you closely are wiped clean of filth, and put people there who are attentive to God’s honor and your welfare and the good of holy Church. …Do you know what will happen to you if you don’t set things right by doing what you can? God wants you to reform his bride completely; he does-n’t want her to be leprous any longer. If your holiness does not do all you can about this—because God has appointed you and given you such dignity for no other purposes—God will do it himself by using all sorts of troubles.” By Kathryn Jean Lopez, Angelus, Aug. 17-24-31,2018, Vol. 3 #28

Los escándalos en la Iglesia tienen todo que ver con sucumbir al mal, asumir las tentaciones del mundo y olvidar el camino del Señor. Y no es de extrañar que nuestra cultura actual no haya encontrado el camino de la cruz, o la enseñanza moral católica, convincente cuando una cultura dentro de algunos de los rangos más altos de la Iglesia no estaba aceptando. Los que hacen la guerra contra los tira-nos de esta manera no son tan propensos a dar la noticia, sin duda. Pero cada vez es más y más brutalmente claro que una podredumbre malvada debe ser eliminada de la vida de la Igle-sia actual. Escribiendo en 1380 al Papa Urbano VI, Catalina dice: “No se puede eliminar de un solo golpe todos los pecados que la gente en general está cometiendo dentro de la religión cristiana, especialmente dentro del orden clerical, sobre los que debería estar más atento.
