What This quick sheet will show you all you need to know about Tags, Questions andMaster Questions

Why Questions and Tags store the key information about your voters, so you need toknow the differences between them.

Where You will find Questions and Tags whenever you look in an individual voters record, when you create a list and also in scripts and forms.

Questions and TagsThere are several keydifferences between Questionsand Tags.

The most obvious one, is thatquestions have answers andtags don’t.

So Questions are used to storethings like canvas data, wherepeople can give differentanswers. Tags are used forthings like the voter puts up awindow poster, where theyeither apply or do not.

National v local

Tags are set nationally, whereas you can create yourown local questions.

You can use local questions toask about local elections andby-elections and local issues.

Users from Senior Activistupwards can createQuestions.

Associated data

Each tag allocation orquestion answer hasadditional informationstored with it. These are:

 Canvasser

 Date canvassed

 User who entered data

 Date data was entered

 Contact type (Doorstep,phone, etc)

Some of this associated data isstored automatically byConnect. Some of it, such ascanvasser name and canvasseddate, you need to enteryourself.

Master Questions

In Connect, there are a fewMaster Questions which pulltogether answers to otherquestions. The Master Questionyou will probably use the mostis Master Party ID. This allowsyou to quickly and easily searchby canvass response, as it willsearch all the differentquestions that ask about votingintention.

What Scripts and forms make it easier to gather and enter multiple pieces of informationfrom individual voters.

Why To make the most of your canvassing and surveying, you should store as much ofthe gathered data in Connect as possible.

WhereScripts are used on Canvas Cards and in the Virtual Phone Bank. They are then

used to enter data in Minivan, Grid View, Script View and using a barcode scanner.Forms are used for entering data in the Form View.

ScriptsA Script is made up of questions, tags and otherblocks of text. They make it easier for yourvolunteers to gather the exact data that you want forConnect.

You can use these scripts for doorstep canvassingand phone canvassing. Most commonly scripts areused for asking about voting intentions, but you canalso use them for asking questions about localissues, recruiting supporters or anything else youcan think of to ask your voters about.

Connect Constituency Managers can create and editlocal scripts to make sure they include all the correctquestions and information to your local campaigns.

When doorstep canvassing you can use a script inMinivan, or record answers on a paper CanvassCard. If you do use paper cards, you can enter yourresults using Grid View or a barcode scanner.

You can also use scripts to make phone calls usingthe Virtual Phone Bank. Using this tool means thedata goes straight in to the database, with no needfor further data entry.

FormsForms are best used tocompliment surveyingactivities.

When you produce a papersurvey in PagePlus, yourConnect ConstituencyManager can create a Formto go with it.

The Form will include all theQuestions and Tags fromyour survey in a similarlayout. It won’t look exactlythe same, as any photos andadditional text won’t beincluded.

The similar layout is just tomake it easier for you tomake sure you enter theanswers in the right place.

Whether you are knocking ondoors or delivering yoursurvey, using a form willmake your data entryquicker.

What This quick sheet will go over the layout and format of standard Canvass Cardsproduced by Connect.

Why Understanding the Canvass Card format is essential to effective canvassing.

Where For this Quick Sheet, the ‘where’ is on the clipboard when you are canvassing. Forprinting the Canvass Cards, see Quick Sheet 4.1.

The cover sheetHeader

The header will tell youthe name of the list youare working from (My Listin this case), the scriptyou are using and thenumber of people anddoors you have on yourcanvass cards.

Canvass Results Key

If we don’t manage tospeak to someone on thedoor, it’s useful to knowwhy. So that, for example,if someone has moved ordied, we don’t try tospeak to them again.

Script

The script contains thequestions we want to askthe voters on thedoorstep. You don’t haveto follow the script wordfor word, but try to stickto it as best as you can. Itis important for howConnect works that asmuch as possible werecord accurate answersto specific questions.

What Canvass Analysis and Target Pools are fields for your voters that are automaticallygenerated by Connect.

Why Canvass Analysis and Target Pools enable you to more accurately assess and targetvoters based on what they think about different parties.

WhereYou will find the Canvass Analysis and Target Pools fields in each individual voter’s

record and in the Create a List screen. You will also use Target Pools when producing target letters.

Canvass AnalysisOver years of campaigning youwill build up a history of voters’voting intentions.

Many local parties will alreadyhave many years worth ofcampaigning data imported intoConnect from previousdatabases.

All of this information can beused to send voters individuallytargeted campaigningmessages.

What Connect does is tocombine all your canvass datainto a single ‘Canvass Analysis’field which tells you which partyor parties the voter is mostlikely to vote for.

Single Party CanvassAnalysis

If a voter has only everindicated support for one party, then their canvass analysis willonly show that party. E.g.Conservative, Green etc.

This may be preceded by‘Weak’ if the data is old or‘Strong’ if the voter hasindicated a preference for thatparty repeatedly.

Two Party Canvass Analysis

If a voter has indicated support

for more than oneparty in the past, thenthe Canvass Analysiswill include bothparties. The party thevoter is more likely tovote for will berepresented by itsname, while theweaker will appear as acolour.

So for example, a voter whomostly votes Conservativebut leans to the Lib Demswill have the CanvassAnalysis of YellowConservative.

Notes on CanvassAnalysis:

More recent data has ahigher impact on theCanvass Analysis than olderdata.

The ‘Nationalist’ part ofCanvass Analysis refers toSNP in Scotland, Plaid inWales and UKIP and BNP inEngland. (In Scotland andWales, UKIP and BNP donot affect CanvassAnalysis).

The Green Party isrepresented in Canvass

Analysis, but other minorparties and Independentsare not.

Occasionally, if a voter hasindicated support for morethan two parties, they mayhave the Canvass Analysisof ‘Unaligned’

Above: Canvass Analysis asdisplayed in the ‘My List’ screen.

Below: A voter’s Canvass Analysisdisplayed in their individual record.

The partynamed is theparty the voteris most likelyto vote for.

The colourrepresents theparty the voterleans towards

3.1 Create a New List Use your knowledge of Canvass Analysis and Target Pools to build lists of voters

4.3 Split Mailings Write targeted letters to your voters using the Target Pools

Keep on learning - these Quick Sheets will build on what you have learnt here:

Target PoolsLetters that you send to voterswill be most effective if they aretailored to the individual voter.

Target Pools enable you to dothis quickly and effectively withvery little effort.

Tory & Labour facing

These two pools are the onesyou want to use to target votersbased on their voting intention.

You will only use one of these, depending on who your mainopponent is.

For each pool, voters are put into one of the followingcategories:

1. Supporters - Likely to voteLib Dem

2. Switch - Have indicatedsupport for Lib Dems andmain opponent

3. Squeeze - Have indicatedsupport for third or smallerparties alone, or in additionto the Lib Dems

4. Stay at Home - Likely tovote for your mainopponent.

5. Unknown - Voters with nocanvass data.

All voters are put in to onecategory for both the Labourfacing and Conservative facingpools, though you will onlyneed to use the one thatapplies to your seat.

For seats in Wales or Scotlandfighting Nationalists, you canuse the options inside the ‘Nat /Labour’ facing pool. A Greenfacing Pool is available onrequest.

Register History

This target pool is based on

which elections people havevoted in. It is automaticallygenerated from your markedregister data.

You can use it to target votersbased on how likely they are tovote.

Letters

The letters pool is notautomatically generated andcan be set up by your localConstituency Manager (seeQuick Sheet 5.6 - Bulk Uploads)
