residential buildings are constructed around estuaries near Rabbit Island and Best Island, it makes wielding a shotgun a little more difficult.Obviously as it gets further into the sea-son there will be less ducks around in the area, so Kieran says the first weekend is usually pretty busy. “Yeah it definitely

keeps the birds moving. Most people have a fair chance this weekend,” he says.Preparation is the key to becoming a good duck hunter, he adds. “Just make sure you have everything sorted for opening weekend, especially. Most peo-ple will shoot in one spot on opening weekend and put all their eggs in the one basket. But myself, as the season moves on, I tend to look for where the ducks are

and then set-up nearby.”Duck shooters used to find plenty of spots in the region but that has died down in recent years because of more residential development and new cycle-ways. “Nelson is one of the worst places. There’s just not the habitat or it’s not re-ally wet enough. All the development is just driving people out and you don’t want to disturb.”

TDC is putting up signs warning skateboarders of areas where skating is banned. Do you think skateboarding should be banned from the main street?

Liz Greening, Richmond.

“They are a bit of a pain be-cause you’re scared you’re go-ing to get hit. It’s too busy and crowded, I don’t want some-one to get hurt.”

Marco Dahlberg, Richmond.

“I used to skate down Queen St and I didn’t even know that was a bylaw. If you see a big group of people you usually hop off anyway.”

Ryan Soane, Richmond.

“They should be allowed. Why not? As long as they’re not pissing any people off then they should be allowed.”

TDC promotes skateboarding by hosting the annual Tasman Skate Park Tour during the summer holidays. There are six skate parks in the Tasman District.Rollerblades and roller skates are also banned on Queen St and Sundial Square, however scooters, which are arguably the most popular amongst children, are not banned from the ar-eas, says Chris.Because it is a TDC bylaw, the penalty would be up to their legislation.

After Tasman voters threw out a pro-posed amalgamation with Nelson City, councillors on both sides seem to have got right back to working together. This week councillors from both coun-cils announced the region’s joint waste management and minimisation plan has been given the go-ahead by a joint

working party, just a week after the amalgamation poll. Nelson City Coun-cillor Mike Ward says the working party worked “exceptionally well together”.“This whole process has been a pleasure to be part of. Everyone worked really well towards the end goal, which ulti-mately puts a plan in place for driving

behaviour change in waste minimisa-tion and waste management across the region.”Introducing the plan, chair of the joint working party Tasman councillor Judene Edgar says we are becoming increasingly aware of the harm our waste can do to the environment, if not well managed.

Cereal saga nearly overRichmond retailer Bob Wren has applied to trademark the name Weetabix hoping it will put an end to a three week long saga that has seen him threatened with legal action over two boxes of cereal.Bob, the owner of English Bob’s Emporium, was threatened with legal action by Sanitarium for selling Weetabix, an English equivalent to Weet-Bix. Sanitarium general manager Pierre van Heedren says sell-ing Weetabix in New Zealand breached a trademark held by the company because it was too similar to Weet-Bix. Weet-Bix could not be sold in England because of a simi-lar trademark.Despite Sanitarium writing a formal letter de-manding Bob to stop selling the Weetabix in his English boutique store by last Friday, asking him to courier all remaining Weetabix to their head office and to hand over contact details of all the people Bob had distributed the cereal to, he refused to comply. However, he has since sold the last remaining boxes of Weetabix and hopes this is the end of the whole ordeal.

Bob has applied to register the Weetabix brand name with the New Zealand Intellectual Prop-erty Office in the hope that it will allow him to keep selling the product in the future. He says the name Weetabix, all one word, is not owned by anyone in the country and if he gets the green light then he will continue selling them in the “low key” manner he had done previously. He

had never advertised the product and the shelf they were on was not even visible from the footpath. “I hope it does [come through] but it’s no big deal. If they leave me alone then I won’t say any-thing,” says Bob. “If it doesn’t come through then I’d de-mand to know why. I just

want them to prove to me that I’m doing some-thing illegal. But I haven’t even got any on the shelf at the moment. I’m not a threat to them it’s as simple as that.”Bob has said all along that he could not afford to take Sanitarium to court because he owned a “small, struggling business.”Sanitarium would not return calls to the Waimea Weekly on Tuesday. Pierre was also unavailable.Bob’s story has attracted plenty of national inter-ested with the New Zealand Herald, Otago Daily Times and Yahoo Xtra! publishing his story.

NEWS IN BRIEFFoodstuffs buys local Raeward Fresh storeFoodstuffs South Island have confirmed the purchase of the Raeward Fresh brand, which includes the store in Richmond.Foodstuffs South Island’s retail opera-tions general manager Alan Malcolm-son confirmed the purchase yesterday but says all three stores will remain in-dividually owned and operated, similar to Foodstuffs’ current brands like New World, Pak ’n Save, Four Square and Liq-uorland.Alan says Foodstuffs indentified the food sector that Raeward Fresh represents as an area of growth and suggests they could be opening more Raeward Fresh stores around the South Island. “We will be looking to develop the brand in key

centres throughout the South Island. We are very excited about the brand and in the future we look for-ward to bringing the Raewood Fresh offering to more of our custom-ers,” Alan says. The takeover will have no effect for the stores, staff and its custom-ers. “The existing own-ers, the Thomas family, will remain responsible for the day-to-day run-ning of the stores and we anticipate it will be business as usual.” Rae-ward Fresh has three stores, at Harewood Rd

and Tower Junction in Christchurch, and Richmond, Nelson.

VISUAL ARTS SCAM: Arts Council Nel-son are warning people of a potential scam targeting visual artists. The sender in one known Nelson instance is supposedly Mrs. Anna Johnson of [email protected]. The scammer pretended to buy, using a fake cheque or stolen credit card number to pay, over paid and tells the artist the extra amount is for their shipper. The artist has been asked to deposit the fake money and then use their real money to “pay” the ship-per, always via Western Union, which once they pick it up, it is completely untrace-able. Arts Council Nelson say they are after quick cash from the victim forwarding the overpayment. It targets artists with online presence as they refer to the artist person-ally and also to a specific piece of work, they added.

VALUES PARTY REUNION: The former candidates of the Values Party now living in Nelson are inviting all those who feel con-nected to the party to a 40th birthday cel-ebration at Fairfield House, Trafalgar Street South, Nelson on Wednesday May 16 be-tween 11am and 4pm. Bring food to share and koha.

DONATIONS ASSIST UPGRADE: Moun-tain bikers and walkers will now have a smoother trip over an eroded section of the Heaphy Track thanks to $10,500 in dona-tions from Nelson mountain bikers and some national mountain biking businesses-to support DOC’s work.

Cousin of dead tramper raises $6K

Tapawera mourns school girl

Sammi Abbott didn’t quite know how to say thanks, now it’s the turn of Nelson’s Search and Rescue team to be lost for words. Last December Sammi’s cousin Sharny Abbott was washed away in a raging river while tramping up the Hackett. He died in the river but Land SAR found Sharny’s body quickly and were able to let the family grieve. Sammi says they were originally told the body would never be recovered. To say thanks for their efforts 18 year old Sammi organised a fundraising show-case on Saturday night, donating $6500

– more than double what she expected to raise – to the team. Land SAR repre-sentatives attended on the night and say they were overwhelmed by the efforts of the teenager. “We do get donations from families that want to credit us but this is the first time to this extent. I’m still blown away by it,” says Joe Hayes, chair-man of Nelson Land SAR.Dancers, singers and musicians graced the stage, with 26 act volunteering their time and talents to help the fundraiser. Performers included many of Sammi’s friends and schoolmates as well as well-known acts from the wider community.

Raffle prizes were donated by local busi-nesses. Sammi says the amount of work in-volved in bringing the event together was more than she had expected, but the night turned out bigger than expected as well, thanks to the help and encourage-ment she received from family, friends, co-workers and the community. She was blown away by the response, and says she was glad to have had the chance to give something back to Land SAR. “You don’t know how much work they do until they come into your life.”

Tapawera is this week mourning the tragic death of one of its youngest citizens after a motorbike accident on a private farm.Sarah Melissa Joanne MacDonald, 5, was riding a mini two-wheeled motorbike with her family on their rural property when she crashed into a farm fence on Sunday after-noon. She died from the injuries resulting from the crash.Nelson Police, volunteer fire and ambulance crews from Tapawera responded to the scene along with the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.Sergeant Blair Hall says police will be con-ducting a thorough investigation into the facts surrounding the events, but first they are giv-ing the family some time and space to grieve.“This is a particularly tragic event and our thoughts are currently with the family at this time.”He says form of machinery has associated dangers and risks and it will be up to the coro-ner to make any recommendations around this.It is understood the family had been riding motorcycles on the farm during the course of the afternoon.Blair says Sarah had just started attending Tapawera Area School and she had older sib-lings.

They have shared thousands of stories and knitted thou-sands of garments but since the Red Cross knitting group reached 30 years together, they have been on the look-out for some new members. The Red Cross knitting group has been busy working away doing voluntaryknitting for other groups in the Red Cross banner and for local people in rest homes, refugee centres and hospitals. All their items, which include blankets, jerseys, beanies, scarves and much more, go to people in Nelson.Pat Borlase, the last remain-ing Red Cross committee member residing in Rich-mond, says that when she is doing Meals on Wheels, she can see when people are in need of a new knitted item. The current group, which doesn’t feature any of the founding members, say they aren’t 100 percent sure why the group started but the common answer these days seems to be “do some knit-ting and socialise.” “I gather it was just a group of ladies that

got together to help out,” says Beth Greep. The group was formed when the Red Cross had two branches in the re-gion; one in Nelson and one in Richmond. But now that it falls under the one banner, there are members from both areas. The group originally knitted peggy squares only, making them into rugs. But now they can undo a jersey and turn it into their own creation and design. “It’s developed over the years.”Glynn Thomas says the best part about knitting is that you can multi-task and catch up on the latest gossip. “You’re working with your hands but you end up working with your tongue as well,” she says.Pat says the work the group does in the community is “phenomenal.” “They’re sending hundreds of hats, singlets, booties, slippers, rugs to refugee places, hos-pitals, homes and places that really need it.”If you would like to join the group, please contact Beth on 544 8353.

Shelley Habib has never had short hair and doesn’t like to think what it will be like to be bald, but that isn’t stopping her bid to raise $5000 and in return have her locks lopped off.Shelley says she will have her hair shaved off this June, a year to the month after she lost a close friend to cancer. She will cut her hair only if she can raise the $5000 to be donated to cancer research. She says the thought of being bald hasn’t got her too fazed. One of her sons feels a bit differently though. “He told me ‘Mummy, you’ll look ugly with no hair and my friends won’t want to come around and play’. It was very cute,” she says.Shelley hopes donations will come from friends, family, fellow church-go-ers at Annesbrook

Church and Waimea Weekly readers. “I’m pretty confident I’ll get there, really confident.”To donate visit www.shaveforacure.co.nz and search Shelley Habib.

Vitamin C has a huge role to play in our body and its processes. The more research that is done on this vitamin, the more we learn about how impor-tant it is to our body. It is a water-soluble vitamin, which means that our bodies can’t store it therefore we have to get what we need from food or supple-ments.There are different types of Vitamin C available, a low acid formula is better tolerated by people with sensitive stomachs. Nutra-Life Vitamin C provides 500mg in a great tasting chewable tablet to help you to maintain a healthy immune system this winter.

College kids get career adviceThe options seem endless. Do you study design at Massey University? Do you train to be a teacher? What about joining the army? Well that important decision on what to do when you leave school got that much easier for Waimea College and Garin College students yesterday. A ca-reers road show visited Waimea College, giving stu-dents an insight into where to take their future study or training. For some it might have given them the realisation that further study isn’t for them and they just want to join the workforce. But as Waimea College career adviser Lyn Guilliard explains, the idea of the road show is to make sure

every student is informed of what is exactly on offer.“We had 36 providers come in and they ranged from universities to polytechs, industry training organisi-ation and other services like chartered accountants, armed services and groups like Study Link,” she says. “Generally it’s like a display and we set up the as-sembly hall with different booths so the students get a chance to go around.”Every two years the road show has been held at the Trafalgar Centre. The providers will move around all of the region’s secondary schools during the week, including Mo-tueka and Golden Bay. The school’s career advisers will now follow up with students to get feedback.

First fiction partnership for the EBU (European Broadcasting Union)

The EBU is the largest professional association of national broadcasters in the world. The Union has 74 active Members in 54 countries of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and 48 associate Members in 28 countries further afi eld. Founded in 1950, the Geneva-based Union works on behalf of its Members, negotiates broadcasting rights for major sports events, operates the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, organizes program exchanges, stimulates and coordinates coproductions, and provides a full range of other operational, commercial, technical, legal and strategic services to its Members. The EBU also works in close collaboration with sister unions on other continents. This partnership is a fi rst for the EBU, one that its Secretary General, Jean Réveillon, explained as follows: “It has always been deemed diffi cult to organize international coproductions in the area of TV fi ction, partly because of national sensibilities and the choice of a fi lming language. Today, the European Broadcasting Union is thrilled to have participated actively in setting up the fi rst large-scale European coproduction on a topic as unifying as the founding ofthe Red Cross.”

“Dunant’s heroism acted as a cohesive force”…(Coproducers’ note)

In a world where natural disasters and armed confl ict constantly alternate in the headlines, we wanted to tell the story of an exemplary universal hero whose struggles and convictions still echo today — a hero who, through his deeds and willpower, remains a beacon of hope.Dunant is that man: he has all the generosity and energy needed to rally people around the avant-garde idea of humanitarian action.Henry Dunant, Red on the Cross is not a fi lm about war but a fi lm about a man — a man of exception, a sensitive man of good faith. Rather than producing a historical movie, we wanted to capture the essence of the man and show how the willpower and audacity of a single individual can improve living conditions for all others. This seemed to us a way of saluting him today, much as he was “acknowledged” more than thirty years after his exile and redeemed by being presented with the very fi rst Nobel Peace Prize. This fi lm is a refl ection of his life, generous, a fi lm to which all involved gave their best, in all sincerity. We are proud to have rallied more than eighteen broadcasters from across Europe and rest of the world around this international fi gure, and very touched by the interest shown by so many men and women of different cultures.

An idealist, a romantic, humanist and visionary, swiss-born Henry Dunant led an insane battle to convince nation states to allow a relief society to take care of soldiers who fell on the battlefi eld, regardless of their nationality. The fi erce will of this man who dared the impossible, thereby earning the fi rst Nobel Peace Prize, was the spark that led to the founding of the Red Cross Society. This fi lm, an epic loosely based on the life of Henry Dunant, is carried by the spirit and the passion that drove this resolutely modern hero of the 19th century.

Henry’s friends Henry’s friends and

Cécile, a hospital nurse, is an incredibly modern young woman. She dares to defy the moral and social prejudices of the time to link her fate to that of the man she loves and who represents all the values she admires. In doing so, she is willing to be disowned by her father and ruin her reputation in a daring, revolu-tionary move for the time. Henry sees in her a true companion, someone who will support him and believe in him more than he does himself.

TUESDAY 8th MAY

Page 8: 2 May 2012

There has been some published criticism re the upgrading/repair to the Bill Wilkes Reserve off Hunter Ave. in Richmond. There have been many 30 year old willow trees re-moved , the stream has been redefined, footbridge replaced, spill way repaired and now new leveling and reseeding of the grounds , all post December flooding issues.I must say I appreciate every day the “clean up” job and the repair work that I witness taking place.I have been to Golden Bay recently and have wit-nessed the extent of the repair that must be under-taken there and I think that we are very lucky to have this reserve work taking place amongst the priorities that face TDC. Well done and thanks, the reserve is looking great.Sincerely,Merle Moffitt.

TDC rate payers desperately need clear report-

ing on the amalgamation issue, and they yet again didn’t get that with the “We Won” article in the April 25 issue. Yes we voted down the Amalga-mation, but what does that in fact mean? Your reporters last paragraph quoting Aldo Michio as saying “....work with the government as they move through their reforms so that the amalgamation model best suits our region” totally negates the upbeat heading “We Won!”Could someone please report clearly on what this means for the future? If I read Michio correctly - since he (and presumably the National govern-ment) didn’t like the way the vote went, they will continue to bring it back to the table until they ram it through. When we were presented with the options we were not told that the rules included Michio continue-ing to push this barrow for as long as he likes while TDC and those rate payers opposed are held hos-tage financially to funding endless committees and votes looking at this issue. This does NOT appear to be dead at all, and no one has actually won yet. Clear, concise and factual reporting on this impor-tant issue for our region is desperately needed.Regards, Lis Pedersen, Richmond.

On Anzac Day I was at my best friend’s home, celebrating her birthday and with an amazing group of woman, we were discussing Pink Ribbon month. This is a time when we can bring together groups, donating money to an amazing cause – Breast Cancer. I believe most of us, know somebody that has or is going through this life changing experience. So instead of telling you about a store, I am inviting you to a high tea here at Fashion Island, on the 8th of May, Tuesday 10.30am, to support this amazing event of Pink Ribbon May. My aim is to raise $5000 for Breast Cancer Foundation. This is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family over a beautiful high tea and raise funds. The money will go to services for community outreach programs and also help woman recover from breast cancer and provide practical daily help for those living with life limiting breast cancer.Tickets are available from my office at Fashion Island above Morrison Street Café for $25 pp, or by contacting me on 03 548 9191. There are only 200 tickets available, I would love to share this time with you in my centre, and give donations to such an incredible foundation.I really look forward to seeing you at Fashion Island.

Some of the region’s unique pieces of art will be on display at Club Waimea this Saturday – once they walk through the door.Ink’d 12, Nelson’s latest tattoo expo will showcase the best local tattoos, tattoo artists, crown “Mr and Mrs Ink’d 12” and feature top graffiti artists, body pierces, muscle cars, roller derby girls and burlesque dancers.Brendan Benjamin of Out There Entertainment came up with the idea, having been to other tattoo shows around New Zealand. He says there had not been a simi-

lar show in Nelson for at least 18 months and it was something the industry was definitely looking for-ward to with more than 170 spon-sors supporting it. “Nelson hasn’t had a decent tattoo show in a long time,” he says. “The tattoo scene has really grown. It’s not about being ‘thug life’ and criminal, it’s all about artwork and artwork that you wear.” Tickets can be purchased at Every-man Records for $10. Entry will be $20 for competitors in the tattoo competition. There is limited door sales so it is requested that you buy tickets prior to the R18 event.

Standing bold and in great nick is the building identified in the main street – Ellis St as the BTC building – Brightwa-ter Trading Company. It was the General Store providing in the main general gro-ceries and stores such as those used by the farming community.I have not been able to put an age of the building but of interest is the presence in the photo of a motor car which I reckon is a Vauxhall and may be about a 1930’s model. The late Cecil Hill once said the building in its earlier life was referred to as “the Beehive” a name derived from the fact that the building had an imitation “beehive” on the ridge straight above the door. It is thought that one of the earliest owners was a Mr Dodshaw. Some children in about 1939 had referred to the general store (being the pre-sent building) as being comparatively new, and so stated this after the building prior known as the “beehive” they had witnessed burning down. As a general store it supplied anything and everything. The accompanying photograph certainly is it displaying the advertising of IGA (Indendent Grocers Association) as well as Bushells Tea and Tip Top ice cream in

my view belies the probability that the of building date would be in mid 1930s and too if my thoughts of the motor car being 1930s then the current building date lines up with this date. The business as such operated a large van “hawking” their wares into and as far away as the Moutere Hill area and likely beyond. Among the many well known persons

that had worked in the shop and local folk will remember many of these names; S.P.Clay, E.W and R.J. Hodgson, Gordon Francois, Frank Peycher, Mr. Shepherd, Harry Knock, Margaret and Pud Palmer, Clarrie Andrews, Bob Ward, Robert Potts and I do recall that my uncle Neil Kearns may have worked there. In fact I do know that uncle Neil and his wife Joyce did operate another grocery

outlet known as Cash Wholesalers situated up the street where Robin Greig for many years had operated his chainsaw, motor mower business and today where there is a motor home rental business. At this point in the street is where the orig-inal Nelson to Glenhope railway “crossed the street” taking an angle alongside and behind McLean’s foodstore as it headed towards Wakefield and beyond. As a kid I can remember the train well as on many

occasions that we may have stayed a peri-od of time with uncle Neil and aunty Joyce the train ran right alongside their shop as it prepared to cross the road and when it made one hell of a noise, more so if you

had not heard it approaching al-beit at a “snail’s pace!” Now back to BTC building it sometime back in the early 1970’s was occupied by the late Geoff Reay and his family who operated “The Bridges Traders” dealing in second/antique goods. The present ownership of the building I am uncertain of but I do recall that Waimea Nurseries

operated an office from the building and perhaps ownership is with them, it is noted the building is currently on the market. Please contact Peter Kearns on 544 5337 if you have any further information.

FHey, thanks for reading our paper. Have you got a story? Give us a call on 544 9037

On the eve of 60 years of marriage and asked about her feelings for her husband of so long Heather Gray of Stoke replied: “He should have been smothered, not mothered”.Fortunately, Bill – the husband in question – threw his head back in laughter, along with eve-ryone else in the room. She was only joking of course. But it gives a pretty clear insight as to one of the reasons they have been together so long, their obvious sense of humour.Bill and Heather met in a general store at Chevi-ot, North Canterbury. Bill was shopping with his brother and father and Heather, 18 at the time, worked behind the counter. After they walked out of the store Bill’s father turned to him and said “there’s a nice girl for you. Why don’t you ask her out?”Later that day his brother asked her to a dance on his behalf and so began a lifelong love. Or as Bill puts it: “My Dad didn’t know much about women did he? Look what he got me stuck with.” Cue raucous laughter.Bill and Heather married one year later when he was 23 and she 19, they were married at the Cheviot Anglican Church on May 3, 1952. Their wedding night was spent at the Hurunui Hotel and their honeymoon at Fox Glacier.Shortly after, Bill got a job at Glen Alton Sta-tion in South Canterbury where he earned nine

pounds a week and the family lived in a house with no electricity. But it was the manager’s job at Glen Wye Station in the Lewis Pass where the family spent the most time. Bill, then only 27, was in charge of a 63,000 acre station with nu-merous staff, an alcoholic cook, and power only until 9.30am. The couple had three daughters and say they loved life on the station with daughter Helen able to recall numerous stories of hilarity, including throwing dirty stones at the clean washing after getting told off. The washing couldn’t be cleaned again for another 24 hours when the power went back on.In 1973 the Gray family moved to Wangapeka where they bought their own 2000 acre farm, which they then sold just four years later for double the price. It was then they moved to Wakapuaka, opposite the turnoff to The Glen to farm. Bill also start-ed working as a fencing contractor and builder, especially when they sold the farm in 1987 and moved to Atawhai. The couple now live in Stoke and say they’ve had a good ride. They started married life on a high country station with no electricity but will cel-ebrate 60 years since then surrounded by friends, their daughters and family. Bill reckons the toughest part of his life was spending it with a house full of females. “Don’t listen to him,” says Heather. “He’s lucky we didn’t knock him off.”

Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly are proud to support this exciting and

significant project

It is important that we are reminded of historical dates and events that have shaped our nation, our culture, and all of us individually and so it is that throughout history, memorials have been established to remind us of tragic or triumphant events that must never be forgotten. Even more importantly we have an obli-gation to learn the lessons from history and to apply them to the present in order to secure a more peaceful future.Anzac Day is our memo-rial day when we remem-ber and pay tribute to those who have served our country and especially for the many of whom lost their lives. A day that is commemorated by dawn parades, wreath-laying services, the red poppy and also for over ninety years being celebrated as a national holiday.A similar memorial event, the ‘Holo-caust Remembrance Day’, also a national holiday, took place in Israel last week as the whole nation came to a standstill as sirens wailed for two-minutes to honour the six million victims of the Nazi holo-caust. Pedestrians stood motionless, buses stopped on busy streets and cars pulled over on major highways – their drivers standing on the roads with their heads bowed. In homes and businesses, peo-ple stopped what they were doing to pay homage to the victims. Just last month I had the privilege of visiting the 9/11 Memorial in New York where the names of all the 2983 people killed in the terrorist attacks are inscribed in bronze on the wall surrounding the two enormous fountains and reflecting pools where the towers once stood. Each

pool is an acre in size and is surrounded by a large eight acre plaza where several hundred oak trees are planted. The site has become a permanent memo-rial to the victims and is a place where people, regardless of political back-ground, economic class, ethnicity or country of origin, can come together, paying their respects at a place that has been transformed from one that was not-

ed for such pain to a place of stunning beauty. But for me the most enduring memorial event that high-lights the greatest historical story of suffering and sacri-fice is remembered and cele-brated every Easter. Probably more than any other memori-al date in our calendar, Easter and the symbol of the cross has been marked by contro-versy, disbelief cynicism and ignorance. Why then is the cross such a controversial symbol of

Christianity? I like what Hans Urs von Balthasar, one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century said: “Being disguised under the disfigurement of an ugly crucifixion and death, the Christform (ie Jesus nailed to a cross) is paradoxically the clearest rev-elation of who God is.” In his life and in his death he was the ultimate example of humility, forgiveness and self-giving love. Thankfully his death was not the end as three days after his death his res-urrection marked the beginning of a new chapter in history. The tragedy became triumph, the ugly became the beautiful, good overcame evil, the grave lost its victory, truth de-feated the lies and the light drove away the darkness. That should be a day to remember and to give thanks for and to celebrate.

Just a thought...

Rockquest launches in NZ Music MonthThe future of Kiwi music is tuning up in the wings, fittingly ready to emerge right during New Zealand Music Month. Smokefreerockquest, New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, original music compe-tition gets underway with Nelson heats on 11 May, in the first weekend of 45 re-gional heats and finals, leading towards the national final at Claudelands Arena in Hamilton on 22 September. This year organisers expect close to 800 bands to enter – adding up to a total of around 3,000 aspiring musicians. The link between Smokefreerockquest and New Zealand Music Month is significant, according to founder and director Pete Rainey. “We’re into our 24th year and it’s the enduring nature of the event that makes its role in Kiwi music so signifi-cant – for some people it’s a springboard to huge success, while for others Smoke-freerockquest is a tool in their roles as

music’s unsung heroes,” he says. “I’m talking about the likes of Ladyhawke ac-knowledging us as her first real gig, right through to the music teacher in Gisborne who uses this event as a prime motivator for at-risk students.” The Nelson heats are at the Theatre Royal on Friday 11 May, starting at 7pm, tickets $10 at the door. The top 12 bands will go on the Nelson regional final at the Thea-tre Royal on Saturday 19 May, start time 7pm, Tickets $20 from Ticket Direct at the theatre. At stake is a prize package that includes a NZ On Air new recording and music video grant worth over $10,000, a place on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, musi-cal gear to the value of $10,000 from NZ Rockshops, radio promotional support for a single, and video play on youth mu-sic channel FOUR. The Peasants, from Garin College, won it last year.

WAKEFIELD COMMUNITY COUNCIL REPORTIf you are passionate about the Wakefield Village and want to get more involved, why not join the Wakefield Community Council? There is no better time either, with the AGM being held at the start of the next meeting on Tuesday 8 May at 7.30pm. If you have an issue that concerns you or a project you think our Village needs, this is a great place to start. We would really appreciate hearing about any such ideas or pro-jects so that we can proactively work together to make Wakefield an even better community. At last months meeting we discussed several items which give rise to the following reminders. As property owners, it is our responsibility to keep all shrubbery and trees main-tained so that they do not protrude over public footpaths. There ap-

pears to be an increasing number of “uncontrolled” dogs roaming around and leaving doggy doos in places where others might tread. For more information on your respon-sibilities regarding animal control, visit http://www.tasman.govt.nz/services/animal-control. Finally, we wanted to advise the Wakefield com-munity that we have received letters of apology from those involved in graffiti and other damage done to the Village Green recently, and to confirm that those responsible have been held accountable.

WAKEFIELD SCOUTS AND KEASOur Scout group had youth and leaders from all our sections in at-tendance at the Wakefield Anzac Day ceremony - Keas, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Leaders. It was great to see so many of our youth taking part in such an important occasion.

This was the first opportunity for our Scouting group to wear their new uniforms as the Kea siz-es only arrived the week before. We would like to thank Pub Charity for the funds that went to-wards providing the uniforms.

Wakefield Scouts and Keas attended ANZAC Day ceremonies. Two local Keas, Hamish Wallace and Dominic Stringer are pictured laying the Kea’s wreath made with paper poppies created by the Kea group.

MAINLY MUSIC IN WAKEFIELDEach week, parents and caregiv-ers bring their children for a thirty minute session of music, rhyme, movement, listening and more. The adults participate in the ses-sion, and in fact, it is vital that they do so, because this encourages the children to enter into the actions and singing.Last term we had a Joseph and his Technicolour Dream Coat theme day. The children came dressed mostly in their dressing gowns. We learnt how loved Joseph was and that was why his dad - Jacob gave him the coat. We sang songs about rainbows, Alice the camel and much more.If you have pre-schoolers and not much happening on a Monday morning please came and join us as we have lots of fun. It’s on Mondays at 10.00am at the Wakefield Village Hall. Cost $3 per family. Please contact Wendy Mil-son 544 7596 for more informa-tion.

WOMENS BIZ MEETINGThis group met for the first time last Friday, and we were excited about the response, with more than 20 ladies coming from all over the district to attend. Thanks to Mau-reen and the team from Flat Rock Café who let us “take over” the café. Genie from Wakefield Print and Justyne from Hair Fairy kindly shared information about their businesses with us, which gener-ated some great questions and discussion. Women’s Biz has been formed to provide an informal sup-port and networking group for the very talented ladies in our area. So if you are in business, or want to be in business, or want to net-work with those in business, then now is your chance! Women’s Biz meetings will be informal meetings for women to learn what others are involved in, support each other with information sharing and build business relationships and friend-ships. Next meeting will be held at Wakefield Villa Tearooms 7.30pm

Sport22 WEDNESDAY 2 May 2012

The action is already underway with Nelson Hockey in preparation for the start of another adrenaline filled winter season. It’s a great sport for all ages and skill levels, with everyone in the family having the chance to get involved, and opportunities to take it as casually or seriously as you desire.Nelson Hockey’s goal is to get as many kids as possible aware of the excitement of hockey and benefits they can get from the sport. It’s a great way to participate in an activity with their friends or make new friends, while staying fit and having fun.Four representatives from Nelson Hockey visit the majority of schools in the Nelson region to promote the fun and fast paced game. Last year they made 140 schools visits, running three-quarter hour sessions with each class, playing fun games and teaching fundamental skills. Since the programme began five years ago there has been a dramatic increase in registrations. All junior practices and games are held on the enclosed hockey turfs at Saxton Fields on Thursday after school. With only one entrance and exit, and constant supervision from the reputable coaches, parents can drop off their little ones for the programmes and be sure they’ll be safe. Programmes for players aged 3 to 9 cost only $30 for 12 weeks, and every new player receives a ball and height appropriate hockey stick to keep and practice with. The Kindy Sticks program gives children aged 3 and 4 the chance to get started on hockey, playing

games and learning basic skills. From there, Fun Sticks and Small Sticks build on the fundamental skills and begin playing some competitive games. Junior Sticks and Division 6 programs follow

for kids aged over 8. Either can be played depending on the level of commitment and

experience. Division 6 players are required to have played for at least two years, and the cost is $50 for 14 weeks.Nelson Hockey players are privileged to have access to the world class facilities at Saxton Fields. The artificial surfaces mean games can be played regardless of weather. The

lights are used to give good visibility after dark. Practices and games

are held on the turfs from 4pm to 9pm

every day of the week to accommodate for all the players in the region. “The turfs are one of the best utilized sports facilities in Nelson,” says Craig Brett, regional development manager for Nelson Hockey. The new Saxton Pavilion has facilities including a canteen, bar and spectator seating overlooking the turfs. There is a Junior Academy available to serious players, giving them an opportunity to upskill and go further with the sport. Many national players found their roots in Nelson, including Anita Punt of the Black Sticks. “For a small region we have a lot of people who are doing extremely well,” says Craig Brett.

American dreamNews of a potential ASB Premier-ship side out of Nelson has come too late for one of the region’s top young footballers with Canterbury United youth captain Erik Panzer sealing a scholarship to the United States. The former Garin College student will link up with Quinnipiac Uni-versity in Hamden, Connecticut. Quinnipiac is a private school with an enrolment of more than 8000 students. Its sports programme competes in the NCAA Division 1’s Northeast Conference.Erik went over to the United States last year to prove his worth in front of top US college scouts. While there was immediate interest, it was only when the 18 year old defender led Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League title that the interest turned into genuine offers. Erik was approached after the final by an agency that helps get New Zea-land footballers on college schol-arships and it was only a matter of

time before Erik was putting pen to paper on a deal with Quinnipiac. The US college system has boded well for young New Zealanders with current All Whites Ryan Nelsen, Tony Lochhead, Jake Gleeson, Dan Keat and Michael Boxall all taking that pathway before breaking into Major League Soccer – America’s premier football competition.Because Erik has a US passport he will not have to obtain a visa. He is likely to start in the heart of defence during his freshman year and says having a crack at the MLS will be his main goal over the next three years.Quinnipiac Bobcats coach Eric Da Costa says the college had been tracking Erik for the past four months, getting to know his back-ground first. “He has strong charac-ter and good values. I’ve enjoyed our conversations and there are a lot of

parallels between what we do here and how he views the game. Like any young player Erik will continue to develop over time, however, we like the foundation he already has to work off of,” says Eric.Erik, who only moved from mid-field to defense last season, is likely to fit the school’s mould of play-ing central defenders that can play from the back, he says.Erik’s football season went to the next level last season after forming a strong central defensive partner-ship with Mark Johnston at AMI Nelson Suburbs in the Mainland Premier League. It led both players to Christchurch in the Canterbury United ASB Premiership squad. Erik was one of five youth players in the senior squad and he made one appearance off the bench.Erik will leave in August, before the end of the current football season.

Whatever is in the Waimea College water supply is certainly paying dividends for the school’s vol-leyball sector. Four Waimea College students; Annie Eden, Brit-tani Harrington, Hannah Davenhill and Gracie Roberts have been selected in the New Zealand Women’s Under-17 volleyball team to compete at the Australian State Junior Volleyball Champion-ships in Melbourne in June before taking on our Trans-Tasman rivals in a three-match series one week later.Three of those players; Annie, Brittani and Gra-cie, are Year 11 students and were key members

of the junior girls volleyball team that won the South Island Secondary School title last year. Hannah was in the Year 9 team that finished a very impressive third place in the same division. The quartet will represent New Zealand for the first time but the nerves will be settled because of the amount of familiar faces in the squad. Nelson College for Girls student Ellie Bell also made the team. All of the girls were to quick to point out Waimea College’s successful coaching programme when questioned about bulk of the squad coming from Waimea. They were excited about the prospect and hoped to make new friends along the way.

Listening to weather experts during the week it would seem that our run of warm weather might be ending. This week will see snow falling to low levels and along with the rain will start to cool the water tempera-ture which has kept good numbers of fish still in Tasman Bay.Carpet sharks seemed to be plen-tiful last week and dominated the catch of a lot of fisherman. A few snapper were still about Rabbit Island and the Boulder Bank but not in huge numbers. This would suggest that the fish are moving out to deeper wa-ter and reports of some good fishing around PepinIsland in about 30m of water would back this theory up.Several Dawnbreak-er boats ventured down to D’urville in search of king-fish and groper but found them hard to come by. It was mentioned that there was an earth-quake that morning which may have upset the fish and put them off the bite. Although they did do well with blue cod and other species of fish. One Dawnbreaker family decided to try their luck and planned an over-night fishing trip at their favourite

spot. Using a strayline rig with 7/0 hooks and a ¼ oz sinker on the in-coming tide during the change of light, the scene was set for a great night. After a few hours the incom-ing tide was really pushing and the salmon berley was flowing far and wide. At about 7.30pm in the pitch

black, they got their first big strike, with nine year old Kaleb overpowering an 18lb snapper to land his best fish for the season.Less than half an hour later 11 year old brother Jarrod had an almighty strike that saw nylon screaming off his reel. The next 20 minutes saw a titanic battle as the fish con-tinued to make power-ful surging runs.Being pitch dark, it wasn’t until the fish emerged from the depths at the side of the boat, that they re-alised it was a donkey of a snapper.Once the fish was in the boat, they saw why

it had been so hard to land. It had been foul hooked in the cheek fin and came up sideways(see photo). TheDawnbreakers recognise fish over 20lb with a special snapper pin and with dad and brother Kaleb already having one he was sure this fish would go close, and it did at 21lb.

FAMILY FUED: Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers halfback Jackson Harvey will tackle his brother Loui Harvey when Galbraith Group Nelson come to town on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The first time brothers Jackson and Loui Harvey played against each other they were cheered on by more than 5000 people at the Botanics, re-enacting New Zealand’s first ever game of rugby. This weekend the Harveys get another chance to go toe-to-toe when the two form teams in the Car Company division one, Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers and Gal-braith Group Nelson, meet for the first time in five years.Jackson has emerged as one of the key ex-ponents in Wanderers’ currently unbeaten campaign, playing a pivotal role on the pitch and on the score sheet.Still at Nelson College, Jackson opted to play in the Car Company division one competition so he could get game-time in the number nine jersey but has gone from strength to strength in his first year at sen-ior level. But marking Jackson at the Brightwater Do-main will be a very familiar face – his older brother Loui. Loui has been an ever-present figure in the Nelson starting XV ever since

he finished school and will be doing every-thing in his power to make sure the formi-dable Nelson line-up take maximum points from their first trip past the Brightwater Bridge.Nelson will be well-rested following Satur-day’s bye, while Wanderers come into the match having played three times in seven days. Both teams will be out to take control at the top of the table, but bragging rights at the dinner table will be a side note to the four competition points the winning team will collect.“It will be a good test for me; testing my-self against my brother,” says Jackson. “If we can get up against Nelson in our first season back then we’ll be stoked.”But Loui, who trains with his younger brother, was watching the game on Satur-day and is clearly aware of what Jackson can do on the rugby field. “I’ll be going out all guns blazing because I have to make sure I’m still top dog,” says Loui.Saturday’s match kicks off at 3pm at the Brightwater Domain, as early form sug-gests, both teams could face each other a lot more in the latter parts of the seasons.

Wanderer’s Rugby ClubWanderer’s Rugby ClubWanderers head into this weekend’s heavyweight clash with Nelson ready to have some fun.Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers’ division one side are undefeated after five rounds this season, after entering a team in the top flight for the first time since 2008. The club’s defending champion division two team is also unbeaten, as is its divi-sion three side.Manager Frazer Lochhead says the club’s top team is excited and ready for the challenge of a “very slick” Nelson team, which is also unbeaten heading into this weekend. “We’ve got our 20 competition points in the bank so will go out on Sat-urday and have a bit of fun.”The game, held at the club’s Brightwater fortress from 3pm, will provide a great measuring stick for Wanderers which battled to a hard-fought victory over Huia in Motueka on Saturday.Wary of Huia’s sharp and penetrative backs, Wanderers’ plan was to simply deny them possession as their forwards assumed more prominence in a domi-nant second-half performance.Wanderers led just 8-7 at the break, wing

Riley Johnston crossing for Wanderers while Huia were awarded the first pen-alty try of the season after a player was taken high close to the line.Halfback Jackson Harvey’s normally re-liable boot was astray this week, forcing Jesse Pitman into the kicking role, the first five-eighth obliging with a first-half penalty success.A second-half try to number 8 Loa Windley gave Wanderers enough breath-ing space to just keep Huia out of reach, a penalty success to first five-eighth Jesse Rush providing Huia’s only second-half points as they struggled to get their hands on the ball.Lock Damien Powick and flanker Callum Rogers were introduced to Wanderers’ pack and seamlessly joined the flow, with a well-functioning lineout also a critical part of Wanderers’ dominant effort. The Wanderers division two side also played Huia in Motueka and – like its senior squad – secured a tough-fought win to remain unbeaten this year. This weekend it will also play at home, hosting Nelson’s division two side with kickoff at 1.15pm.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Winning start to the women’s season

On one and a half feetWhen his left foot was crushed by a bobcat’s steel bucket, Tom Cross thought his promising sporting career was over. Approxi-mately half his foot had to be amputated after what he thought was just a broken foot. Tom was told running would be difficult and any attempt to return to the rugby field would be deemed mad – hard news for a teenager that lives and breathes the sport. But the 20 year old has made it back on to the rugby paddock and despite playing through the pain barrier every time he takes one step, Tom’s impressive showings, particularly in last week-end’s second division loss to Wanderers, has given him new con-fidence that he can push on to the Waimea Old Boys division one side.A talented first-five that can slot nearly anywhere in the back-line, the former Waimea College first XV player had represented Nelson in most age-grade representative rugby teams prior to the accident in October 2010.His first real test on his foot’s capabilities, close to a year after the work-related accident, was when he made his division one cricket debut for Wanderers over the summer period. He didn’t think he would make it through the whole season, but was eager to get back on the sports field. “They said you’d never have the

speed you once had. You’d lose quite a bit of that. Running in general, they didn’t think I’d be able to do it,” says Tom. “The limb centre in Wellington doesn’t make sports prosthetics so I just had to play with what I’ve got.”Tom made it through the cricket season battling a sore ankle. Every time he planted his left foot at the bowling crease he would feel the pain and agony. But he says the cricket season helped his transition back to rugby. “There’s a lot more rest in cricket between overs. I played touch in the summer as well and that was pretty easy too.”Tom has formed a strong combination with Luke Thelin, ever since he moved from fullback into the playmaker role. He is ada-mant that he can push on to division one, but admits the pain in his foot is not allowing him to see through the 80 minutes. “It definitely hurts. I get to halftime and I just have to push through the pain. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I’d love to play A grade. You play rugby for your club so you can make the top teams.”Tom has also taken over the goal kicking duties with surprising ease. “It’s not that bad. It’s pretty stable. But it’s good.”He will just take the rest of the season “as it comes” but is defi-nitely enjoying life back on the field. “If I get picked, I get picked. I’ll take the opportunities as they come.”

A’s lose to StokeWaimea Old Boys were Stoke’s first victims of the year, going down 29-19 at home on Saturday. It couldn’t have started much worse for Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys, with a penalty off the kick off. That penalty put Accessman Stoke straight on the front foot within the first three minutes of play. This tested Waimea Old Boys’ char-acter, slowly making some in roads into Stoke’s defensive line with strong ball running from Ben Jefferies and winger Michael Bates.Josh Rutledge managed to put Waimea Old Boys in front with three unanswered penalties midway through the first half. Stoke playing into the wind, kept the ball in tight,

squeezing through holes in the fring-es of the opposing ruck. This didn’t take them too much longer to exploit with a try to Stu Tunnicliff. This woke the red and whites up with some outstanding forward play and Michael making another brilliant run though the Stoke backline. Dan Hytongue was on hand to dot down under the sticks just before half time. Waimea Old Boys turned up at the break up 16–14 and heading towards the clubrooms they still looked in good position to grab a well needed four points to climb the competiton ladder. But someone forgot to tell Stoke as it was all them in the second half scor-ing two more times to grab a bonus point. Waimea Old Boys take on Wakatu Marist this Saturday.

Yet again it was up to the girls to show the boys how it was done, claiming victory in their first game of the season 24-22 at Ju-bilee Park. The two top teams from 2011, Waimea Old Boys and Stoke, started off with a hiss and a roar. First points went to the visitors as both sides played some fast running code in the first twenty minutes. This was showed by some outstanding speed and aggressive tackling from both sides. The first try for Waimea Old Boys came from a backs combination of halfback and first five Tash Kara and Penny Stickney. From then on Waimea Old Boys found their feet fully in the game and started to control the game. Forwards taking great opportunity of taking loose ball forward and gaining excel-lent yards. Dotting down for the second try was

standout forward Amanda Sim. Third try com-ing from the second five. Waimea’s backs put on a great display of com-binations. Newly appointed skipper Nikita Thompson was another standout with a sub-lime display on the weekend.

Tasman Tennis Club recruits new coachA three time national age-grade tennis champion from South Africa has taken over the head coaching role at the Tasman Tennis Club.Kolie van Zyl started the job this week and brings with him a wealth of experience hav-ing played against some of the world’s top players and coached at the Bosse Sports and Health Club in Boston for five years.Kolie was born in Pretoria and excelled at high school level, winning the South African Under-18 title three times. He picked up a scholarship in Flor-ida at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was the number two player for the team which was ranked inside the top 11 in the country at the time. Big third quarter seals winGarin Senior A made a steady start to their sea-son when they met the more seasoned Rival Jade team in the opening game of the season at Saxton Stadium, registering a 39-27 win.Garin have a number of new play-ers on their roster and were without key circle defenders. However Da-kota Sigley, more accustomed to goal shoot, answered the call from coach Sarah Rankin and donned the GK bib where she quickly established a handy partnership with Emma Greep. Dako-ta gave away considerable height how-ever with great body position she was able to pull in a number of well timed rebounds. While Garin held a 10–6 lead after the first quar-ter it was Rival that had the better second period and were in arrears by 16-18. Rival’s goal shoot, Susan Mathieson found her target well to be the

dominant shooter.Garin lifted their defensive pressure and it soon paid dividends as they restricted Rival to a mi-serly two goals while racking up 12 goals of their

own.Goal attack, Sjaan Hungerford found her rhythm early to lead Garin’s offen-sive circle. Shooter Livvy Nott com-bined well with Sjaan and slotted some nice goals despite the close attention and long reach of Rival’s Judy Totoro. Garin’s cousins Makaila and Abbie Po-wick displayed a great understanding in the mid court and bought the ball

through competently. Cheyenne Sigley made an impact off the bench at wing attack, where she put in a number of great feeds from the circle edge and was quick to any loose ball. Both teams landed nine points in the final quarter.
