To paraphrase the Monty Python Spanish Inquisition joke, no one ever expects a pandemic.Navigating COVID-19 as the owner of a business brokerage firm gives iBC Business Broker Inc owner Michael Naprawa an overview of the pandemic’s impact on businesses, including his own.

The shut down progressed quickly. One week there were warnings – two weeks later the border was closed and so was the province.

From a flourishing start in 2020, Michael’s brokerage saw a disruption from sellers quickly. “Prospective sellers became quite silent for three months.” Sellers couldn’t predict the pandemic’s impact on their business. Buyers – many from outside Canada, could not travel here.

But even in a pandemic, opportunity knocks. After the initial shock, savvy buyers started calling

in mid-April, seeking liquidation bargains. Recently an owner called and is assessing to dispose of his tourism-related business instead of rebuilding for a changed economy.

Michael often keeps in touch with past clients and is surprised by the randomness of the pandemic’s impact. One import business that he expected would thrive is now considering closing, due to the disruption in rail services first, then prolonged delays in international shipping. Other hard-hit businesses are in entertainment, tourism, and fishing.

Many service businesses that stayed open are doing well. The boating industry is doing okay as many people chose to isolate on the water. Boat owners following vacation-at-home

directives are buying boats or having their boats outfitted and serviced on the island and boating close to home. Also flourishing is a meal prep delivery service, which is enjoying a surge in demand while seeking a buyer. A computer IT service business has been busy as most people at home now are more dependant on technology.

Michael’s brokerage business is also maintaining its status as businesses change ownership for many reasons. With international buyers, Michael overcomes the border closure with online promotion and a detailed, image-rich marketing package for each business. He is laying groundwork for deals that will close when the border opens for in-person visits by buyers.

“In my wildest dreams, who could have predicted this? The market will be affected for some time until there is some predictability.”

noise for the frontline workers. I know it has been a time of loss, not only of lives but also of livelihoods, but I often wonder if it was nature’s way of saying: “Stop! Now take a breath.”

As things start to reopen, especially here on the island, I would like to personally thank all those who continued to work … the essential services both medical and municipal, those that armed all the checkout points at grocery stores, post offices, hardware stores and pharmacies … the courier services, the delivery people. What I marvelled at the most was how friendly everyone was… and still is. I am also grateful for our government and the aid they made available for those that needed it.

But… I am disappointed at the notices in my local Save-on stating that they will not tolerate their staff getting abused. Who

Life in the Time of Corona

It hardly seems possible that we have been in full Corona alert since around March the 16th … Lockdown was scary, to say the least. I remember that first visit to the grocery shop armed with gloves and mask, Lysol wipes ready! Now it is the new norm. I remember the frightened eyes above the mask of the senior whom I faced head-on in an aisle, before they made directional markings. The confusion at the check-outs where people did not know where to stand. Now it is running like a well-oiled machine. I rejoice at the nightly 7pm pot-banging, horn-blaring

would abuse a person helping you while you get to stay at home and they have to work? I am also disgusted at the deluge of sanitizing wipes and rubber gloves which litter parking lots and shopping cart stations. Why? Someone has to pick those up! I am floored at the virus-related racism that is plaguing our society … those are fellow Canadians you are screaming at. I am also devastated to hear that people are taking advantage of some of the government subsidies. Think back to the early days when toilet paper was being stockpiled, gloves and Lysol wipes hoarded and resold at a profit. I think that an emergency situation like we have been experiencing during this pandemic brings out the best and the worst in people….

However, that been said, I think that now there is some light at the end of the tunnel, deep down people had time to stand still for a moment and reflect … and, as we move forward, that maybe we have grown a little, changed a little for the better as we embrace the new normal.

Children’s RoomWhat is more crucial than sleep for a young infant or child? Nothing! It is vital that you regulate the amount of light entering your child’s room, since they create their own sleep schedule, Room darkening window coverings are critical in creating the perfect environment for sleep. You must consider two things when considering window treatments for your children’s room: amount of light blockage and safety. Most babies and children require complete darkness to rest, so you will wan to choose a room darkening fabric over a light filtering one. Next, make sure they are safe. Budget Blinds offers a wide variety of “child safety approved” window treatments that do not use dangerous cords which become a hazard in your children’s room. This is an investment in their sleep… and yours!

ARE YOU A SHIFT WORKER IN NEED OF A GUARANTEED GOOD NIGHT’S REST IN BETWEEN SHIFTS? DO YOU HAVE A YOUNG CHILD WHOSE SLEEP SCHEDULE IS NON-EXISTENT? ARE YOU A MIGRAINE SUFFERER WHO SEEKS COMFORT IN A DARK SPACE, FREE OF PAINFUL LIGHT?Room darkening window coverings are the solution. Migraine SufferersFor those of us who are prone to migraines and severe headaches, we know all too well the horrible feeling of waking up in a brightly lit room after a night of tossing and turning in pain. Room darkening window coverings are a natural way to relieve migraine symptoms and promote a restful sleep in a safe, dark space. As the specialists say, creating a very dark room can help to combat your episodes, and block out the light triggers that make it worse. Budget Blinds also offers blind additions such as side channels that remove the tiny bit of light that can sneak in through the sides of your window coverings, to create a perfectly peaceful and light free room.

As we emerge from our bubbles of isolation and into the next phase of COVID recovery, many of us are returning to work and leaving our furry beloveds at home. This is an adjust-ment for ourselves and our animals, as rituals and routines undergo change. Although your cats may notice your absence, their reaction to your sudden disappearance may involve pos-sessing your office, where they have presum-ably looked down on you for months. They are independent creatures and will likely adopt your empty chair with little remorse. Dogs, on the contrary, are ritualistic and thrive on consistent routines and structure. This is key to their stabil-ity and a “pawsitive” state of well-being.

It is important, during this time, to establish a routine before returning to work. Perhaps this involves changing your walk times and leaving

the house for short periods. This will help your dog, which is opposed to sudden changes that could result in separation anx-iety, to adjust gradually. When leaving the house and returning, it is best not to make a fuss of your dog. They will pick-up on any feelings of guilt and sadness about leaving them. It is important to keep the environ-ment calm and positive with little reaction when you leave and return home. There are various things you can do to make your dog’s time without you more enjoyable. A new toy can offer mental and physical stimulation, a sound machine with white noise and nature sound features can help calm, soothe and drown out the outside noises. There are music CD’s specifically designed for dogs and cats plus iCalm play-ers from icalmpet.com. This website offers

These options all help when you are gone for relatively short periods, however, when absent for long hours, hiring a Pet Profes-sional to come and visit/walk/play with your dog is definitely an ideal option and will help release any built up energy, especially in young dogs. For older and special needs dogs, this gives them an opportunity for physical connection and pee breaks as long-er periods prove more challenging.

Dear Cindy, Right now I may be under the influence but I’ve got something to say and say it I will. I read your column every month and like it. People come to you with all kinds of things and you come right back at them. I’m sorry if I am not making sense but I have to tell you how much I understand what you say. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself and need a lift. I read your column and feel like you are talking to me. It makes me feel real good. THANKS

DEAR THANKS. You are most welcome. And thank you, first, for reading my column and second, for writing to me, no mat-ter what influence you may be under. No need to apologise about it and - you are making sense. Each person who writes to me has a story that is unique, each about a person who is try-ing to sort out a difficulty. Often their difficulties are too close for them to see how to deal with them, sort out a solution or answer. They are so involved, or maybe so torn about a situa-tion that the “aha” moment just isn’t there for them. So, I write hoping it is of help. If only I reach just one person then I feel my job is done. Having you write to me is the best reward I can get. No, THANKS, it is my thanks to you.

MOVIE NIGHT IN | BY KELLY STEPHAN

With the current political climate, it is a great time to use movies and television series to get a better understanding of perspectives in the Black Lives Matter history and movement. A great series to watch in understanding the relationship between the police and the black community is When They See Us, a Netflix Original limited series that was released in 2019 and won several awards including NAACP awards, Critics Choice Awards and Emmys. When They See Us is an American Crime Tragedy that tells the real-life story of the Central Park Five (later to be referred to as the Exonerated Five) that takes place in 1989 in New York, following the murder of a jogger who was found in Central Park. The series follows the lives, arrests and families of the 5 suspects who were falsely accused and charged as teenagers. They went on to spend over a decade in prison, despite the lack of evidence and their treatment during the police interrogation. The series is both powerful and heartbreaking and remains relevant despite the case happening over 30 years ago. Directed by Ava Duvernay, the story-telling and narrative is engaging and bingeworthy, and often hard to watch. Jharrel Jerome portrays the story of Korey Wise, who went on to serve the longest sentence of the five, and who won the Emmy for Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series. When They See Us is a must-see four-part series on Netflix that will leave you heartbroken and yet hopeful, an interesting and relevant story that very closely mimics the world today.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT | BY JUDY STEPHAN Leader and Innovator

NEW NANAIMO AIRPORT CEO: DAVE DEVANA

Nanaimo Airport has a brand-new President and CEO after Mike Hooper retired this Spring. Dave Devana took up the position in May and we performed a “social distancing” interview so you can get to know this key figure in Nanaimo.Dave Devana graduated from Esquimalt High School in Victoria and then attended Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where he achieved his Bachelor of Business Administration. Dave did his articles and passed his Uniform Final Exam to become a Chartered Accountant. Fairly early in his career he had the good fortune of moving to Bermuda to work for Ernst & Young. When he moved back to Canada, he worked for the BC Government in the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Environment. He left provincial government and commenced his career in local government and was Director of Finance and Deputy CAO in both Sooke and Yellowknife. In 2010 Dave was hired as the CAO to lead the District of North Cowichan. There he spent 7 years before moving to a similar position with the Town of Cochrane in Alberta. In these positions he gleaned invaluable leadership experience and has a reputation for being an innovator with a focus on environmental stewardship and economic development. He was a perfect choice for the position of President and CEO of Nanaimo Airport, and it enabled him to move back to the Island he loved so much. In Dave’s extensive career, and besides his accounting background, Dave’s experience includes land use and environmental stewardship, government relations and funding, financial management, strategic

planning, human resources and labour relations. He’s also developed expertise in information technology, innovation and leadership, negotiations, bargaining and communications – all crucial in this position.

Dave says he is looking forward to working with the Board and community to deliver on the 2019–2023 Strategic Plan. This focusses on expanding the destination options for the local community in accordance with the Airport’s Vision “Your Gateway to the World”.  He is also looking forward to developing partnerships to deliver on the Nanaimo Airport Land Use Plan for fulfilling the region’s air services needs for the next generation, but his focus right

now is managing the impacts of COVID-19 on the Nanaimo Airport and its partners. “I see a great opportunity to apply my skills to partner with local governments, First Nations, non-governmental organizations and business to expand the economic impact of the airport. I am eager to get started working with our partners to enhance our communities,” Dave says. Nanaimo Airport has become one of the province’s fastest growing regional airports. Earlier in 2020, it opened an expanded Airport Terminal Building, a $14-million investment funded by the Commission and the federal and provincial governments. Last year airport operations generated an estimated $486 million in economic impact felt throughout all corners of the region, including some 2,750 jobs that support Central Island families.

Besides leading Vancouver Island’s second busiest airport and his team of 28 employees, Dave is happily married to his wife of over 30 years, Jan, and is father to two boys already in their twenties. He loves spending time with his family, as well as camping, hiking and waterskiing. He is also an avid fastball player and golfer.

Nanaimo & Voyager Magazine wishes him every success in this new position.

The day is fast approaching when we will actually see a woman as a Head Coach or holding down a General Manager’s position full time with an NHL team. A few are presently engaged in various other jobs with NHL teams. Cammi Granato, is scouting for the newest NHL entry in Seattle and Hayley Wickenheiser is Assistant Director of player development with the Toronto Maple Leafs. There are several Power Skating Coaches working in the NHL, including Dawn Braid, Laura Stamm and Barb Underhill. Women’s Hockey and related sports have developed exceptional leaders over the years and no doubt, more will be given an opportunity to pursue their career ambitions in Women’s pro leagues and the NHL.

Hockey Canada has many excellent programs recognizing and developing female coaches

ART ADVENTURES | BY PATRICIA BANKS© (ARTIST/WRITER)

Patricia Banks

Summoning the art muse after a substantial pause, requires a little effort now and then. I like Laura Jaworski’s words: “Inhale possibility, exhale creativity.” Re-igniting the inspiration to paint is about changing my physiology to the mental, emotional, and physical state that facilitates creativity in me. Everyone has their own unique way of doing this. I find that sitting quietly, taking a moment to relax and to calm my mind, then imagining and daydreaming a little, fills me with all kinds of possibilities. The next step is to allow these creative ideas to flow and to be translated through my pencils and paintbrushes.

Sometimes the flood of ideas and subjects is so rich and diverse, that I write them down for future art works. This exercise declutters my mind and helps me focus on just one subject at a time. Once the art muse is summoned, I am in the ‘zone’ and ready to choose my subject and the story I want to tell my audience. I then pick the appropriate canvas size and shape. Next, I decide on the painting

Art AdventuresArt Adventures

medium – for example, which medium would portray the subject best – oil, acrylic or another painting medium?

When I paint landscapes, I also envision the time of year, the weather, and the mood and feelings I hope to conjure for the viewer. Colour and value choices are important. The sketching process begins with a few, small, varied pencil sketches rendered using light, medium and dark values. This provides the information required to determine if the composition is working. The muse is with me and the painting process is in full swing. Possibilities and creativity abound.

HOME IMPROVEMENTSyour backyard but also a source of fresh water. During the warmer summer months finding water can be difficult and providing a birdbath of fresh water will attract many different species of birds. Add a water dripper or solar bubbler to the water source to create the sound of moving water, which will make it even easier for the birds to find. Did you know that birds have great sight and hearing but do not smell or have taste buds?

Locally owned and operated, The Backyard Wildbird and Nature store has been helping people enjoy nature in their backyards for over 25 years. Check out The Backyard Wildbird & Nature Store online at www.thebackyard.ca or see us in store at 6314 Metral Drive. Happy Birding!

During the past couple of months we have had time at home to watch and see what is happening in our backyards. One thing we have noticed is the amount of bird activity that happens and the many different species that can be seen. To learn more about the birds you are enjoying, you should see The Backyard Wildbird & Nature Store for the

right seeds to feed the birds, feeders to use, houses and information to enjoy and help the birds.

The knowledgeable staff can help you with what is right for your backyard and what is proven to attract birds. Enjoy feeding the birds, without the mess or growing bird seed, by using a seed that all the birds actually eat and not toss out of the feeder. Finding a bird feeder that is right for “your” birds may seem daunting but with the selection of bird feeders, including quality cedar bird feeders made in Nanaimo, getting the right feeder is easy. You can also attract the bright yellow American Goldfinch with Nyjer seed and feeder.

Not only do bird feeders attract the birds to

GARDENING & MOREBUCKERFIELD’S GARDENING TIPS

| BY ROSEMARIE BARNES

It’s ironic that even though we are surrounded by water, residents of Vancouver Island prepare themselves for the annual dry season heralded by the coming of summer. That means ensuring hoses, sprayers, and nozzles are in good shape and without leaks. Irrigation systems can be a saving grace, again provided they are kept in good repair. Our acidic soil can wreak havoc on hose and line connectors; if yours are looking worn, Buckerfield’s South carries everything you need to keep your gardens lush even in the heat of summer. Perhaps this is the

South End Nanaimo, suite 1-1277 Island Hwy S

250.753.4221

Preparefor theDry Seasonyear to invest in tree water bags; the regular size holds 20 gallons and can be zipped together to create a 40-gallon supply of water. That’s a lot of water for a thirsty tree!

Many gardeners are seeing increased garden pest activity. Weevils, aphids, cut worms, and slugs seem to be very hungry this year, so Buckerfield’s South has brought in a shipment of Lawn and Garden Attack Packs. Whether it flies, crawls, or burrows, Buckerfield’s South has got you covered. Included in the Attack Pack are the unsung heroes of the best gardens: Nematodes. These marvelous tiny creatures work

tirelessly to ensure the power of the soil is accessible to the plants that grow in it. The healthier your soil, the healthier your plants, and you know what they say, you are what you eat. Keeping your garden full of nematodes and free of pests is the very best way to ensure the highest quality vegetables and the prettiest posies.

Knowing that your gardens are moist and healthy leaves you free to go ahead and enjoy the summer!

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZING DONE RIGHTBook now: [email protected]

The Covid-19 Pandemic has forced us all to slow down and think carefully about how to keep ourselves and our friends and families safe. It also gives us time to catch up on projects we have had on our to-do list for a long time. Maybe you have been busy cleaning out old stuff to make

way for new or perhaps you have sold your home and need to eliminate some of your possessions that are not going to fit into the new abode. You may be panicking with time constraints due to looming possession dates.

We can help you meet your deadline. We help you decide what to keep, what to sell, what to donate or gift. Downsizing and moving can be an emotional and stressful

experience. In 2020 we have been forced to change the way we do things and really need to rethink the methods of disposal, and who you may be inviting into your home. Strangers coming

to a garage sale or responding to buy and sell site ads can be a health threat. You have no idea who they have had contact with or where they have travelled.

At Just Sort It! You can be assured that we adhere to all the Covid-19 safety protocols and we have a business license and insurance. We treat our clients with respect. Having partnered with MaxSold Online estate and downsizing auctions, we can show you the safe way to profit from your unneeded possessions instead of paying to have them disposed of. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. You would be amazed at what people will bid on.

Recent MaxSold auctions have successfully made money on over 96% of the items listed. As partners, we do it all for you. We sort your things into lots, take photos, add detailed descriptions and upload to the MaxSold site. Your auction can run for a variable time, usually a week to 10 days. MaxSold takes care of collecting the money. When the auction ends and the bidding is done, we will be on site to give the purchased lots to the winning bidders in a contactless scheduled orderly pick up. Maxsold then transfers the proceeds to your bank account or sends a cheque.

You know that sensation you get when you watch a movie filmed in your hometown? That’s how people from Nanaimo will feel as they listen to the new true crime podcast ‘Where is Lisa?’ Nanaimo is the backdrop for a documentary-style telling of one of the city’s most famous unsolved crimes.

OUR COMMUNITY

On a long weekend in the summer of 2002, Nanaimo’s Lisa Marie Young went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday. There were big changes ahead; a move to a new apartment, a fresh start on a career with big dreams of becoming a sportscaster. But that night, Lisa got into a red jaguar with a young man from a prominent family and was never seen again. Many people believe they know who is responsible for her disappearance, and now a new true crime podcast is shedding fresh light on her case. ‘Where is Lisa?’ explores the tragic real-life tale behind the urban legend that has haunted Nanaimo for 18 years.

The six-part series is an in-depth examination, featuring original interviews with key characters in the case.

Lisa’s friends and family describe the anguish of losing Lisa. The series begins with a focus on who Lisa Marie Young was in life and then takes listeners on a journey down the years of searching and raises questions about the investigation. At the heart of the podcast is an understanding that Lisa’s story is far more than your typical true crime narrative.

“With her new true crime podcast, former CBC producer Laura Palmer heats up a cold case in a respectful, human way. Yes, the first season of her new series Island Crime is called “Where is Lisa?”, but Palmer takes time to ask “Who is Lisa?” before digging into her disappearance.” -Globe & Mail Review (May 27/2020)

In 1892 Samuel Robins, manager of the Vancouver Coal Company that held the Harewood Estate in trust, decided to clear and subdivide the area into five-acre lots for the miners and their families. The original Harewood School was established that same year. Miss Mabel Bryant was the first teacher and had a class of 28 boys, 33 girls and a salary of $50 a month. A new school was built during World War I, enlarged over the years and served generations of Harewood youth until 2004. In the 1920’s and ‘30’s, it was an “Advanced Superior School” serving as a high school and even offered Grade 13 at one point.

Around 1900, a one-room school, the Red School House, was opened in South 5 Acres with Alexander Shaw and Kate Cairns as early teachers. After the Second World War

and the amalgamation of several smaller school boards, Harewood became home to a number of new schools starting with the opening of Nanaimo Senior Secondary High School and Fairview Elementary in 1952, as well as the new District #68 Administration offices. The 1960’s saw rapid growth with the addition of Park Avenue Elementary

(1962) and later Georgia Avenue Elementary in the 1970’s, as well as on-going expansions to existing schools.

John Barsby Junior Secondary was opened on April 2nd, 1957 and was named in recognition of a local resident, John Barsby. He had a distinguished record of public service having served on City Council from 1920 to 1937, including 5 years as Mayor, as well as serving on the school board from 1933 to 1950, often as chair. He also was a member of the BC and Canadian School Trustees Association and served terms as president of both bodies.

I have chosen this book because something unprecedented happened recently. Suppliers have run out of a multitude of books written by black people about the black experience and books on the history of racist ideas.

People are ready to educate themselves and understand how and why racism continues. How to be an Antiracist teaches us to look inside ourselves, honestly, and evaluate the validity of our thoughts on racism. It teaches us to be careful with our words, that they may leave us in a state of inaction and neutrality. The book argues that saying “I am not racist” is passive and ineffectual for actual change towards equality. Change demands action and action demands effort. Ibram X. Kendi defines words of action that can change the way we act and react in a system designed for inequality, so that we may move forward to real equality; that we may act towards real equality. It is sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes repetitive, but always thought provoking and extremely challenging. An important book showcasing the power of words to effect change within ourselves first and finally outwards.

What an exciting first week in Canada for this new immigrant! A Fuller-Brush man and the interruption of lovemaking, a Christmas Party, muddling through best wishes and learning that ‘cows make beer too.’ The first comments from readers: “I’m not a reader. Your book? I read every word from beginning to end. I’d spank you for some of the choices you made.” Siegfried H.“I finished Flight Into The Unknown and find it very satisfying. It answered many questions. I’m an immigrant writing my memoir.” Afiena K.“I read your book in two days, a real pageturner. Enjoyed learning about your experiences when you first came to Canada. Please continue writing.” Allan J.“It’s brilliant. Giselle evoked emotions in me. I laughed and cried with her, was infuriated or felt joy. It’s an incredible life story. More, please!” Marina O. METAPHYSICAL TREASURES

SAVVY SENIORS | BY CATHY HOLMESGramma’s Knees

Gramma’s knees are truly one of the most beautiful blessings surpassed only by Grampa’s piggyback rides, knee jumps and practical jokes! And while I know that this is very much a stereotype, as a gramma myself, the hardest part of social distancing has been missing hugs (with everyone) and nuzzling with my grandchild!

I’m amazed at the ingenuity of families to remain connected! Seeing huge clans in front of an older person’s home singing Happy Birthday to their 97-year-old mom or dad fills our community with such joy. I loved a recent YouTube video of one family that made a life size plastic shield with clear plastic garbage

bag arms so Gramma could cuddle her three grandkids whose ages looked to have ranged from 6 to 16. She stood in the makeshift hug machine and squished each child until they could stand no more, and then the kids resumed their water activities, only to come back for a second round of hugs a few moments later!

It has been so great to see the creativity of community including things like I Love You stones left on older adult’s porches along with bags of delicious treats. Some people have taken the recent Ninja fad to a whole new level surprising elders with all kinds of goodies!

Did you know that social Isolation among

older adults has the health impact of smoking 15 cigarettes a day? It is crucial that we find ways to engage as safely as possible while ensuring meaningful connections. It isn’t hard to make a difference and can be as simple as a telephone call or a thoughtful card in the mailbox!

We are lucky that no one on the Island has seen an outbreak in facilities like they have in Vancouver or other parts of the country, and for many living in quarantine it has been incredibly tough. Management and administrators have been diligent and it has been hard on everyone involved, but the results speak for themselves.

It was Gramma’s knees that kept us feeling safe – let’s stay strong and gift back the comfort.

Tofino photo by Racheal TalboysKeeping Well during challenging times

We are living in an extraordinary time. We only have to turn on the news to realize that our world has been profoundly changed. It’s only natural that many of us feel anxious, lonely or unsettled. Being aware of our feelings is important. Once we recognize our emotions, there are many things we can do to maintain our mental health during these challenging times.

• Start a gratitude journal. List three things you are grateful for each day.

• Collect inspirational quotes in your journal.

• Begin the day with a cup of coffee. Studies show coffee is linked to lower rates of depression. Don’t drink too much, however, as that can increase anxiety.

• Try soothing green tea.

• Head for the beach or a park.

• Go to bed an hour earlier if you are getting less than 7 or 8 hours of sleep.

• Think of something you’d like to change in your life and take one small step toward your goal each day.

• Try a new recipe.

• Write a poem or sketch. Creativity is linked to mental health.

• Show someone you love them each day—with a hug or a phone call or an email.

• Treat yourself to a small piece of dark chocolate every couple of days. Studies have shown it can help improve mental skills.

• Colouring can be relaxing and help you clear your thoughts. Geometric designs that are a little complicated work well. Check out free printable colouring pages here: https://www.justcolor.net/relaxation/

• Disconnect from social media for at least part of the day.

HEALTH & WELLNESS | BY VIRGINIA BRUCKER

• Turn on the music and dance—it increases feel-good chemicals and reduces stress hormones.

• Make sure you laugh each day—talk to a funny friend, watch a comedy, or look at some cute videos online.

• Practice forgiveness. Whether it’s a family member or just someone who cut you off in traffic, it’s good for your health.

• Smile more often—it lowers our heart rates and calms the nervous system.

• Get 15 minutes of sunshine each day (with sunscreen of course). Sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D, which is believed to be a mood elevator.

If you are experiencing pervasive anxiety or depression, talk to your family doctor. The Mid-Island Canadian Mental Health Association also offers a variety of services and supports without charge in our area. Check out https://mid-island.cmha.bc.ca/education/

We were at the Cactus Club - going not

coming – my wife was visiting the washroom

while I lurked in the shadows and made discreet

observations. Excellent restaurant, the Cactus Club. My only reservation is that it could benefit from a little less professionalism, and a little more playfulness. In present form it’s a little too tightly scripted.

My restaurant career started at the Keg Prime Rib down by the Bayshore.

My only qualification being that I knew how to eat dinner.

Now there was a loose establishment! Any looser it would have blown itself

apart. If, for example you came from a better family and didn’t drink, they’d teach you.

After a lengthy stint as a dishwasher, earning the nickname Hobart for my great speed at cleaning plates, which is every bit as much fun as eating them, I reported for waiter training, all two days of it. Entrusted with my education was the legendary Malcolm, the quintessential Keg waiter, whose distinct advantage over the rest of us was that he looked like Tom Selleck of Magnum PI, and we didn’t. Hair, height, build, red shirt, he had it all, right down to the personality, which was deemed pleasantly sleazy.

Day One we covered the basics, how to carry four plates on one arm without

damaging the baked potato. Day Two we moved on to the important stuff, how to drink on the job. He also showed me how to handle customer complaints. A demanding group of six made the mistake of saying that their wine was off. Malcolm, gleeful of eye, larcenous of heart, offered to taste it for them. With permission granted, he snagged the bottle off the table and chugged it. “Tastes fine to me,” he said. “Just a little empty is all.” Not a technique practiced at the Cactus Club.
