WELCOME
FROM THE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND AND MINISTER FOR TOURISM
Welcome to Surat, Yuleba and the Cobb and Co Festival in this special Year of Outback Tourism – a celebration of the wonders, and wonderful people, of Western Queensland.
You are in for a unique Outback experience.
This family-friendly week celebrates the history of the last Cobb and Co coach run in Australia 95 years ago. It features live entertainment, markets, a camp oven dinner, bush dance and re-enactment of a horse-drawn coach and trail riders travelling the 76-kilometre Cobb and Co Way from Surat to Yuleba in South West Queensland.
Tourism is important to the Surat Basin and the Outback in general. The industry is already worth more than $350 million and supports 3700 jobs across the region. The Queensland Government is delighted to be working with organisations like the Surat and District Development Association Incorporated and Yuleba Development Group Incorporated to see these numbers continue to grow.
Through our Year of Outback Tourism Events Program, a total of $3 million in grants to support new and established events is being allocated to local governments, event promoters, community organisations and businesses across Outback Queensland.
With four rounds of grants in all, there is a lot happening this year and next to entice Queenslanders, and interstate and overseas visitors, to head out west.
Thank you for heeding the call and sharing in the adventure!
We hope you enjoy the Cobb and Co Festival, along with everything else Surat & Yuleba have to offer, in this year dedicated to a truly magical part of Queensland.
Share your snaps, tell your friends, and make plans to head back to the Outback.

WELCOME
A great big country welcome to the Cobb & Co Festival, celebrating the 95th Anniversary of the last Cobb & Co Coach Run in Australia from Surat to Yuleba.
The era of horse power still captures the imagination and what a sight to behold: the Coach travelling the Cobb & Co Way in full flight pulled by 5 horses!
As of old, there’s been the hustle and bustle as mail bags and passengers have been picked up in Surat. Then after the long and dusty ride, the cheers of those awaiting will welcome their arrival at Yuleba.
With this festival we celebrate and pay tribute to our Surat, Yuleba and Maranoa fore-fathers who lived in harsher, more rugged times. They helped create our culture, our history, our very Australian heritage and today, we still use our strong links to Cobb & Co to enhance a sense of community. It is
As Mayor of Maranoa Regional Council I would like to warmly welcome you to Surat, Yuleba and the Maranoa Region to join us in celebrating the 95th anniversary of the last Cobb & Co Coach Run in Australia.
Every 5 years we look forward to celebrating the Cobb & Co’s last service in Australia. It is a unique experience where we take our replica Cobb & Co Coach out of our Cobb & Co Store Museum and hook it up with horses to provide locals and visitors the opportunity to step back in time and travel in the Coach along the path of the original Cobb & Co Service from Surat to Yuleba – a truly iconic experience!
It is always an exciting festival filled with horse riding, camping, markets, local food and entertainment. It is a beautiful sight with riders from all around the country participating with spectators welcome to follow along.
The Cobb & Co Festival is an opportunity to showcase CR TYSON GOLDERMaranoa Regional Council
this sense of community which makes for vital, vibrant and subsequently viable small country towns. We would like to acknowledge our funding bodies for their contribution to the event - FRRR, Queensland Government Community Benefit Fund, Year of Outback Tourism Events Program and Queensland Destination Events Program.
Thanks to Maranoa Regional Council for recognising and supporting the Cobb & Co Festival as a significant tourism event in our region.
Thank you to all our generous sponsors, businesses and individuals who have supported us to make our celebrations such a huge success.
FROM THE MAYOR
FROM COBB & CO FESTIVAL COMMITTEE
the amazing history and unique culture of the Maranoa region and creates many economic benefits for our communities while celebrating the region.

THE HISTORY OF COBB & CO
While the Cobb & Co Coach Service commenced operation in 1854 in Victoria, it wasn’t until January 1866 that services commenced in Queensland. From then, horse drawn coaches were travelling the length and breadth of Queensland from Cooktown in the north, Thargomindah in the southwest, from Cloncurry in the northwest to Tallebudgera in the southeast.
In 1884, Cobb & Co Mail Service No. 177 commenced, travelling from Yuleba to Surat and on to St George. It was a valuable service for local, remote property owners to access supplies, receive mail and to transport passengers between the towns and beyond.
The service became an iconic and essential tool for local graziers and industry people to maintain contact
with friends and relatives, to receive supplies from town and for passengers to travel, where previously travel was expensive and time consuming.
After the First World War, the increased popularity of the motor vehicle and air transportation meant that the horse drawn coach had become obsolete. On August 14, 1924 the last Cobb & Co Coach service No. 177 made its way from Surat to Yuleba.
In its years of service in the region, Cobb & Co had engrained itself into the culture and way of life for many locals. Today, descendants of coach passengers, drivers and groomsmen remember the service and the impact that it made on life in what was then a remote and sparse landscape and lifestyle.

On The Great Inland Way, 78 kilometres to the south of Roma along the Carnarvon Highway you will find the picturesque township of Surat. Historically the site of a Cobb & Co Changing Station, the Surat community has, with much dedication, preserved this precious remnant of their history. Today, as in the past, the Cobb & Co Changing Station now forms the centre of the community’s cultural hub.
Steeped in history with links to Cobb & Co and the ‘boom time’ of the wool growing industry, Surat is an ideal destination for anyone wishing to reconnect with the history of the pioneering spirit of life on the land. The Cobb & Co Changing Station - the original site of the Cobb & Co Store and drop-off point for coach travellers and goods, houses a museum of regularly changing displays depicting the lifestyles of yesteryear.
The museum is also home to a 14-seater Cobb & Co coach.
The Surat on Balonne Gallery is also housed in the Cobb & Co Changing Station Complex. The Gallery hosts exhibitions of works from local artists and those from further afield. It has an impressive exhibition program which will rival any of its city counterparts. Visitors are encouraged to include the gallery on their travel itineraries.
Another highlight housed in the Cobb & Co Changing Station Complex is the Window to the Balonne Aquarium, a 25,000 litre fresh water aquarium. Visitors can see a range of native fish species which live in the local river systems including Murray cod and yellowbelly.

Yuleba features prominently in the history of the Cobb & Co Coach Service with the last horse drawn coach in Australia running from Surat to Yuleba in 1924. The Cobb and Co Way has been developed by locals and is a great way to learn about this remarkable service. Visitors can relive this bygone era by retracing the last Cobb & Co run and viewing sites of local significance such as the Cobb & Co Mural, Aboriginal Native Wells and Cobb & Co Corduroys.
Yuleba was settled in 1865 and was originally located on Yuleba Creek, 11 kilometres south east of its current location. In 1879, the town was moved to the railway crossing, officially known as Baltinglass. In 1901, Baltinglass was renamed to Yuleba, whilst the original location of the township took the official name ‘Old Yuleba’. Residents lived at both sites until a flood in
YULEBA
1910 convinced them to move to the new location.
Found on the eastern border of the Maranoa region 60 kilometres east of Roma, Yuleba features the largest white cypress pine forest in the southern hemisphere. The town is a service centre for the rural sector and gas industry. It has a service station, hotel/motel, general store, post office, sporting and recreational facilities and a primary school.
Just five kilometres south-east of Yuleba is scenic Judd’s Lagoon which features some magnificent flora and fauna. The locals also know it as a good fishing spot. This scenic lagoon and wetlands provide a tranquil natural backdrop for visitors wishing to bush camp and enjoy watching the amazing birdlife.
Cobb & Co Festival is funded under the Year of Outback Tourism Events Program during the Year of Outback Tourism 2019.
