PRESENTATIONOSSA, founded in 1952, is a leading company in the underground construction sector specializing in three business
areas: Construction, Energy and Mining.
Both in underground excavations by traditional method (NATM), as well as in tunneling with TBM, and roadheader mining,
OSSA is a solid underground works partner for important industrial and construction groups internationally. At OSSA
we are highly commited to Quality, Health and safety, and Environment, and we invest in Research and Development
Projects at an international level. We promote a culture of respect and teamwork among our team.
OSSA has vast recent experience both in high speed railway tunnels with over 60 km of high speed rail tunneling projects
in the last five years, leading the Spanish market in this specialty, and also in underground power plants, having built
over fifteen underground plants with some of the largest underground caverns in the world. As a recent highlight, we are
participating in the design and construction of the Hong Kong to Shangai High Speed Rail Line.
Internationally OSSA has executed works in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Brasil and
Nicaragua and is recently focusing its tendering activity in North America, Central America, Asia, Canada and Great Britain.
After 65 years of success, our strategy is to continue expanding internationally, and to support large civil engineering and
mining industry clients at all levels, contributing our vast technical expertise and our equipment fleet, while prioritizing
health and safety and innovation in all our projects.
SAFETYSafety is Obras Subterraneas, S.A.’s main asset from the time when its operations begin, demanded by the specialisation
required for the works carried out underground.
The company’s staff have a high degree of professionalism and specialisation, which has been achieved after many years
of training and the transfer of know how. Working in confined spaces with the presence of gas, dust, noise, low visibility
and the use of explosives means that the Obras Subterraneas, S.A.’s security department is the most relevant in the
company.
The use of cutting-edge, innovative techniques in the field of underground works requires the continuous training of the
company’s human resources.

The Bekkelaget water treatment plant will increase treatment capacity from 4m3/s to 8m3/s. The works to be carried out will serve to expand the capacity of the current plant from 290,000 to 500,000 population equivalent. The Project represents the largest environmental works currently underway in Norway and will involve underground excavation, by drill and blast, of over 500,000 m3 of rock. It also includes carrying out support/reinforcement and structural work throughout the entire expansion of the plant. Furthermore, demolition and removal of concrete structures and tanks from the existing plant are also included in this contract.
The works will be carried out between 2014 and 2016. As individual projects 5 caverns of between 300 and 425 m2 in cross-section 180 m in length will be built, as well as access and evacuation tunnels, shafts, digesters, and storage and treatment tanks, with a total length of approximately 2 km.

Work involved construction of a hydraulic tunnel to collect and divert/redirect residual and industrial waters.
The tunnel built measured 2,313 m in length and excavation was carried out using a 4.22 m diameter boring machine. The tunnel was covered with reinforced concrete of 0.34 m in thickness.
5 discharge niches needed to be built in the vertical conduits. Said niches were excavated using perfection and blasting. This same system was used to build a 6.1 m gallery for a planned Storm Tank.

The principal difficulty with this work was in executing the sewer with materials stuck in the depths of the tunnel (20 m below sea level).
Of the 6,082 m of sewer, 5,317 m of perforated tunnel was built with EPB of Ø = 3.95 m and the remaining 765 m with pipe jacking, with a micro TBM pushing 1.6 m diameter tubes.
The tunnel built with an EPB was covered with 30 cm thick voussoirs and was waterproofed with cement mortar injections in the voussoir backfill up as far as the excavation line. 6 working shafts were built, 8 waterdistribution wells, 8 spillways and secondary sewers.
