Licent’s Museum• Licent’s Museum was set up in 1914 in
Tianjin• Open to public in 1928, with the name “
Beijiang (北疆)Museum”, meaning “the museum of the northern territory” in Chinese
• The war against Japanese broke out in 1937 and Licent went back to France.
• In 1952 the government of Tianjin became in charge of the museum and changed the name to “Tianjin Natural History Museum”

In Chinese history concessions are sections of land that foreign countries acquired from unequal treaties, most of which are around the coast line of China.

French government and Qing Dynasty signed a treaty and acquired the concession, 439 acres
Expansions: 1. 1900 expanded west 4 times, 2360 acres 2. 1916 expanded farther west despite the resentment of the public
1920s more modern buildings went up (mansions, shopping malls, hotels, banks), became the business center of Tianjin
1943 the French government agreed to give up the concession (27)
