The materials and equipment available to dental professionals in the 21st century allows for superior results to be achieved - as long as clinicians embrace the opportunity to understand how these products have been designed to work.

With this in mind, Henry Schein Dental, Kerr, KaVo and Sybron Endo are delighted

to be staging The Innovations in Dentistry Symposium, a two-day event where leading

speakers, including Dr Chris Orr, Professor Robbie McConnell, Professor Gianluca

Gambarini and Tracey Lennemann, will discuss restorative dentistry, endodontics and

new equipment that has transformed the way modern dentistry is practised.

On Thursday 3rd July 2014 at Altitude 360o in Westminster, each dental team member can

choose from a comprehensive range of lectures to suit their needs, accruing 8 hours of

verifiable CPD.

Then, on Friday 4th July 2014, dentists can attend restorative hands-on sessions

(up to a maximum of 20 delegates in each) worth 5 hours of verifiable CPD at

Henry Schein’s Educational Centre at Marble Arch. These interactive sessions will

allow participants to hear, see and perform various cutting-edge techniques,

developing skills of immediate use in the dental practice.

In recent years, the introduction of reciprocation simplicity has been advertised as a main improvement in endodontic shaping procedures. The introduction of 3D technologies, however, has shown that root canal anatomy is not simple, and more attention needs to be paid on the quality of shaping and cleaning procedures. Therefore instrumentation techniques should combine simplicity with quality, aiming at providing adequate body shaping and apical preparation, and consequently a favorable endodontic space for enhanced fi nal cleaning and obturation procedures.

The lecture will show the latest improvements in NiTi instrumentation, describing a new approach: TF Adaptive. The advantages of this new technique will be shown, explaining the key feature points: the new motion, which is a unique combination of continuous rotation and reciprocation, the benefi ts of TF technology in such motion, and the clinical use of the new sequences which are designed to fi t all canals, combining excellent shaping results with simple and easy to perform procedures. The creation of an endodontic glide path with reciprocating SS instruments will be also presented and discussed.

Amalgams have served dentistry for over a century. New EU regulations, however, require the profession to move to alternative restorative techniques. The direct posterior composite resin restoration provides the patients with sealed, conservative, aesthetic tooth re-enforcing restorations. The composite restoration allows the practitioner to use minimum cavitydesigns to remove the diseased tissue and preserve healthy toothstructure. In this presentation, Professor McConnell will show not only where these restorations are indicated but why it is the restoration of choice, both aesthetically and restoratively. Professor McConnell’spresentations will include a review of enamel and dentine bondingsystems including which bonding techniques work best for conventionalfi ll and for bulk fi lling techniques. Simplifi ed preparation and placementtechniques for anterior and posterior composites along with a discussion of longevity expectations will allow the practitioner to confi dently include these restorations in an aesthetic restorative practice.

Following the lectures, participants will have the opportunity to placea Class II composite restoration using SonicFill™ (Kerr). Dentists will discover that this system not only delivers a fast, easy and effi cient true bulk fi ll aesthetic restoration, but one with superior density and adaptation.Hands-on will include indications for conventional and bulk-fi ll techniques;matrix selection; achieving contacts everytime; Understanding adhesives and adhesion; fi nishing and polishing.

This session will focus on an exciting new diagnostic tool, the DIAGNOcam, which uses transillumination technology to identify caries sooner and more

safely (i.e. without x-ray). The product also links directly to a screen so that you can share and discuss the diagnosis and next steps with

your patient there and then.

Dr. Kaliq will be hosting these three sessions throughout the day. Each one will include clinical insights, live demonstrations and

a question and answer session with the opportunity for you to trial the product yourself.

We will also have our ESTETICA E30 ambidextrous unitat the event, which will be used and ably demonstrated

by Tracey Lenneman during her speaker sessions.Tracey has a vast heritage with KaVo products

and will be able to allow plenty of hands-on experience of the chair as well as its air

polisher and other assets.

Bonding to enamel has been a successful procedure since its inception by Bunocore in 1955, however bonding to dentine has had a rather more troubled development period.

Over the years, adhesion to dentine has improved very greatly, to the point where it is reliable and predictable, provided that it is used in the correct way. This in turn means that the operator needs to understand the components of the kit and how they have been designed to be used.

During the presentation, we will discuss the two adhesion strategies that are at the heart of all today’s bonding agents. We will also look at where clinical usage of these materials commonly goes wrong and how to avoid the common problems and pitfalls.

We will also discuss other issues such as “how long should I etch fl uorotic enamel?”, “how can I bond onto an old composite restoration?” and “what should I dip my instrument into when placing a composite restoration?”

Learning objectives

• To understand the current state of the art of bonding to tooth structure.

• To discuss some of the clinical myths surrounding the procedures.

• To discuss the most common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Our patient’s desires - straight, white teeth - have not changed over recent years, yet our armamentarium to achieve this has changed completely in thelast ten years. The tools to achieve a beautiful but conservative result are nowmuch more easily accessible to all practitioners, and the ideal of minimally-invasive aesthetic dentistry is now more easily achievable than in the past.

During this presentation, we will discuss a structured approach to aesthetic treatment planning that fi rst allows for the planning of ideal aesthetics. Potential occlusal issues can be avoided or built into the treatment plan simply by combining needed treatment with the elective treatment needed to idealise aesthetics, whilst considering the consequential effect that the whole treatment plan will have on the patient’s function.

This comprehensive aesthetic treatment planning sequence can be applied to restorative, orthodontic or interdisciplinary cases and will be illustrated with several cases showing the application of its principles.

Learning objectives

• A structured approach to comprehensive aesthetic treatment planning;• Simple risk management examination tools, applied at the chairside.

• Knowledge of a structured approach to treatment delivery.

Aesthetic Dentistry in 2014: Planning the Whole Mouthfor Function and Aesthetics with Dr Chris Orr BSc, BDS

Dental amalgam has served the dental profession well for almost twohundred years. It is easy to use and durable, even in large cavities. Now, itsdays are numbered.

The Minimata Convention was agreed by a large group of national governments earlier in 2013 and as a result, a phase-down in the use of dental amalgam will become a priority for the profession. There is a lead-in time of several years before we fi nally say goodbye to amalgam, but we need to start preparing now for the day when we can no longer offer amalgam restorations.

This lecture will discuss the current state of the art of posterior composite and indirect restorations. We will cover indications and techniques for a successful restorations without amalgam.

Learning objectives

• The Minimata Convention - what will it mean for UK dentistry?

• Current state of the art posterior composite restorations.

• Options for indirect restoration of posterior areas.

Let’s face it… your dental practice is a business, yet dental school never teaches you how to run a dental business. Practice management, ordering supplies, bookkeeping, personnel problem solving, patient management and reading fi nancial statements are just a few of the many aspects that need to be perfected when running and overseeing a business. These can often be diffi cult and sometimes overwhelming, creating unwanted stress for you and your team.

Course Topics

There has never been a better time to be a dentist - today’s materials allow us to easily achieve a longlasting, aesthetically superior result in a short space of time. Our predecessors had to work longer and harder to achieve the same result, but to achieve these results, it is more important than ever to understand the materials and how they have been designed to work.

This interactive day will allow participants to hear, see and do the different techniques so that they can develop a better understanding of how to apply these techniques in their practices.

Learning objectives

• How can we achieve the best results for our patients, yet rationalise the numberof shades/products we keep in stock?

• Anatomical layering for large anterior composite restorations layering for posterior composites: which is the best technique?

• Bulk fi lling of posterior composites:are the materials ready?

• Layering vs. bulk ll - which is best?

• Finishing and polishing techniques.
