COURSE DESCRIPTION Part 1: The purpose of this lecture is to educate the general dentist on the implications of cracks and fractured roots as it pertains to endodontic and periodontal conditions. The goal is to enable the GP to make better clinical decisions when diagnosing cracks which will lead to better treatment recommendations and long term outcomes. Furthermore, a goal of this lecture is to discuss indications of post placement (which is correlated to fractures) in hopes of reducing the incidence of iatrogenically induced root fractures. Part 2: The Endodontic lecture portion will explain trauma with periodontic and endodontic implications on cracked teeth, including crown lengthening, anatomy and biologic width. Additional in depth topics will include Splinting and tooth survival;; trauma from occlusion;; periodontal infection and grafting.

Dr. Craig Gayton is originally from Seattle, Washington and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington. He then attended Howard University’s College of Dentistry in Washington, DC. After graduating, he was commissioned to serve in the U.S. Army. In the Army, he completed Ft. Benning’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). Dr. Gayton was soon stationed in South Korea as the Chief of Restorative Dentistry for one year and then returned to Washington, DC where he worked as the Assistant Officer in Charge at Ft. Myer in Virginia. Following that, he volunteered to serve in the Kosovo Humanitarian effort of 2002.

Dr. Gayton received his three-year periodontics certificate at Ft. Benning Eisenhower Hospital in conjunction with the Medical College of Georgia’s Graduate Oral Biology program. His final duty station was as Chief of the Periodontics Dept. at the Heidelberg Hospital in Heidelberg Germany. Continuing Education is just as important as having a traditional dental education. The treatments and techniques used in dentistry are constantly changing. Dr. Gayton believes that it is important to stay up-to-date so that he can offer his patients the most advanced treatment options. He am a board certified member and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He has done extensive research in various areas of dentistry, and in 2006, he was honored to receive the Army’s Joseph Bernier Award and the Southern Academy of Periodontology’s “Best Clinical Research” award for my research in a skin graft derivative associated with bone graft healing. Dr. Gayton chose to return to Washington, DC with my family. He feels fortunate to have the wonderful support of his family and his community, including Silver Spring and Bowie, Maryland.
