Sampling Frame the group of individuals that actually have a chance of being selected from a population in order to obtain data. The sampling frame varies depending upon the sampling technique used. The following are the more common sampling techniques:
1. Simple Random Sample A sample in which every member of a population has an equal and independent chance of being selected.Example: Select the sample by drawing names from a hat or assigning each person a number and using a random number generator.
2. Systematic Sample A sample selected by listing a population sequentially and choosing members at regular intervals.

3. Stratified Sample A sample in which each stratum or group is represented in the same proportion as it appears in the population.
Example 3 page 113 114A certain high school wants to survey the music preferences of the students before booking a band. The following table shows the enrollment at the high school:
Grade Number of Students Relative Frequency Number Surveyed
9 255
10 232
11 209
12 184
Total 880
a) Determine a stratified sample for a survey of 25% of the student body.b) Suggest other ways to stratify this sample.

Other sampling techniques:
4. Cluster Sample A survey of selected groups within a population. This may save time and expense but may not be representative of the population.
5. Multistage Sample A sample that uses several levels of random sampling.
6. Voluntary Response Sampling A sample in which the participation is at the discretion or the initiative of the respondent.
7. Convenience Sample A sample selected because it is easily accessible; may not be reliable.
