•Quality Counts verification will be required for all youth exhibiting

livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock shows in Texas (including the Ft. Worth Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Star of Texas Fair in Austin, San Angelo Livestock Show, Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and Heart O’ Texas Fair in Waco).

• The verification process will require 4-H exhibitors to pass an online test that measures their knowledge on quality assurance and character education content items.

All 4-Hers must take this test but only twice in their 4-H career.

4-Hers that were intermediates last year and will be in the senior division this year, must retake the test.

The annual awards banquet will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 6:30p.m. and will be held at the Pleasanton High School Cafeteria. We are delighted to announce that the speaker this year is Katie Bonner Talley, former Lytle 4-H Member. Tickets are $7.00 for parents, non-4-Hers and guests. The price for 4-H members is $5.00. Due to the limited seating, we cannot guarantee ticket availability at the door. We are asking that volun-teers bring their favorite deserts to share. There will also be a silent auc-tion to raise funds for the County Merit Scholarship. Anyone wishing to donate goods or services may bring their items to the Extension office prior to the event.

4-H Food Task Force Meeting Thursday, September 1st at 6 pm will be the Food Task Force Meeting. If you are interested in the Food and Nu-trition Project please come to the meeting and help us decide on dates for the Food Forum (an opportunity for Food and Nutrition folks to speak about any topic in this project – a specific food, nutrition, or cooking method – whatever strikes your fancy) and the Food Show. We will discuss other events that we might offer. Last year we visited the Culinary School of the Alamo Colleges in San Antonio. We could do something similar, set up a tour of

the Farmer’s Market at the Pearl in San Antonio – give me ideas and I’ll see what I can do! Hopefully, we will have the rules and theme for the District Food Show. If we do we will bring them but we can always have our own theme for the County Food Show. All are welcome!

During National 4-H week, we participate in “One Day 4-H”. In this program, 4-H members make a difference through volunteering in their communities. This October 8th is “One Day 4-H” day. We will be going out once again into our community to lend a helping hand. What will you do? You can work together as a group or as an individual. Choose a project that benefits someone other than yourself. It can be as simple as mowing a yard or doing something countywide. This en-ables each 4-H member to recruit friends to help make their communities better. Information for organizing our communities “One Day 4-H”events are online at the Texas 4-H and youth devel-opment website. As more ideas are shared and information is developed it will be made available on the website. Need other ideas, contact your 4-H program assistant, Michelle Pfeil at 830-569-0034 or by email at [email protected].

7

This day is designed for

4-H members to learn more

about our state legisla-tive process, see our legis-lators in ses-sion, and to

visit with their respec-tive elected

officials. More info coming in

December.

My name is Derek Scharmann. I'm a member of the Poteet 4-H club. I attended the South Texas Buckskin Brigades Wildlife Leadership Camp June 12-16. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I recommend anyone from the age of 13-18 to attend, especially if they want to learn more about wildlife conservation. Some of the commitments of being a cadet is to do educational programs or projects on behalf of the Brigades. I would love to do a presentation for your club or any other organiza-tion that would like to learn more and hear about my experience. To schedule a presentation please contact me at [email protected] or my cell 210-749-1556. A BIG thank you to my sponsors, Atascosa Tex-as Farm Bureau and Atascosa Soil and Water Conservation!
