Dr. Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor Churchwide This weekend includes Valentine’s Day. It is a special time of the year for Janet and me, since our first date was on February 12. We were married later that year on December 27, but we prefer to celebrate around this time of the year. I am grateful for 40 years of a loving relationship with my beautiful bride. I would encourage all married couples to rekindle romance and reaffirm your love. You can certainly do this by simply telling your spouse on a regular basis, “I love you.” As simple as this seems, after a number of years, many fail to do this. As the king said to his beloved, “How beautiful and pleasant you are, O loved one, with all your delights” (Song of Solomon 7:6). Actually, it is not a bad idea to read again the Song of Solomon and to be reminded of the God-ordained passion, partnership, and pleasure which the Lord intended for a married couple. According to Harlequin Publishing House, which has been in the romance business for over half a century, more than 180 million romance novels are purchased each year, with that company itself, selling an average of 5 ½ books per second. I am not suggesting reading that material but urge you to remember and reaffirm the kind of sacrificial love which Paul described in Ephesians 5:33. We are charged to love and respect our mates with Christ as our example (Ephesians 5:33). Our Associate Pastor of Family Ministries, Steve Hayes, has written a short booklet to help you in rekindling your relationship which we are distributing this weekend. Naturally, love must be demonstrated by the will and not just the emotion. Pastor George Crane tells of a wife who came into his office full of hatred toward her husband. She said: “I do not only want to get rid of him, I want to get even. Before I divorce him, I want to hurt him as much as he has me!” Dr. Crane suggested an ingenious plan: “Go home and act if you really love your husband. Tell him how much he means to you. Praise him for every decent trait. Go out of your way to be as kind, considerate, and generous as possible. Spare no efforts to please him and to enjoy him. Make him believe you love him. After you have convinced him of your undying love and that you cannot live without him, then drop the bomb. Tell him you are getting a divorce. That will really hurt him!” Smiling at the thought of revenge, she exclaimed, “Beautiful! Will he ever be surprised!” The woman did it with enthusiasm, acting “as if …” For two months, she followed the plan diligently, but didn’t return to Crane’s office. He finally phoned her and asked, “Are you ready now to go through with the divorce?” She replied: “Never! I discovered I really do love him.” Loving actions changed her feelings. Motion resulted in emotion. I know I would not gamble with that term “divorce,” but I trust God gave him unique wisdom. The Lord knew the outcome if she would love by the will. You don’t need to “drop the bomb,” but obliterate hatred and resentment. Happy Valentine’s Day! *There is a guest reception in the Commons following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00am worship services. Pastor would love to meet you!
