представляти наш народ, наші традиції. Нам сприяла погода. Взагалі всі чекали дощу, а

весь час погода сприяла тому, щоб усе відбулося так,повинно бути. Тільки були сказані завершальні слозапалали вогні на ялинці, і впав невеликий дощ. Взагато ми хотіли, щоб впав сильний дощ, бо дощ символібагатство і гроші, і хотілося б, щоб на Україну впапобільше грошей”, - відзначив голова Львівсьоблдержадміністрації.

Михайло Костюк також наголосив: „ Я впевненщо європейці по-іншому дивляться на нас з кожндійством, що відбувається за нашою участю. Подія, відбулася у Ватикані, також змінила ставленєвропейців до України й українців. Адже якщо Украпрезентує позитив, то цей позитив стовідсоткозасвоюється певною частиною громадян європейсьспільноти, і ми всі отримуємо від цього дивіденди”.☦

Довідка: 16 грудня делегація з України взяла участь урочистому відкритті головної ялинки на площі св. Пет у Ватикані та зустрілась зі Святійшим Папою Римськ Бенедиктом XVI. Делегацію очолив віце-прем’єр- мінісУкраїни Борис Колесніков, а до її складу увійшли голо Львівської та Закарпатської облдержадмініст Львівський міський голова та інші.

Під час відкриття виступили Львівська держкапела « Дударик» разом із ватиканським оркестром. Ввиконали традиційні українські колядки і щедрівки. Львова приїхали також звіздарі, які відомі львів’янамщорічної ходи звіздарів і вертепів.

За інформацією очільникаЛ ь в і в щ и н и , у к р а ї н с ь к аделегація представила ПапіРимському Бенедикту XVIкартину відомого львівськогохудожника Петра Сипняка„Вертеп”. Це мистецький твір,що символічно репрезентуєнаш регіон. І Папа дуже

у в а ж н о о з н а й о м и в с я зкартиною. „ П а п і Р и м с ь к о м у

Бенедикту XVI сподобалися нетільки зміст картини, а й стиль,в якому виконана робота. Ми,звичайно, були горді з того. Митакож б ачили , з я кимзахопленням дивилися накартину люди в залі. Цевеличезний позитив, що мешканці нашого краю можутьтак довершено представити свій край”, - підкресливголова Львівської облдержадміністрації.

Вершиною усієї урочистої церемонії, звичайно, булодійство на площі Святого Петра. Михайло Костюкзазначив: „Коли ми прийшли на площу і наші діточкизаспівали колядки, то після того вся площа стоячислухала гімн України, який виконував оркестр поліції Ватикану. Усі бачили український прапор, чулиукраїнський гімн. І знову після цього діточки співали іколядували. Було величезне захоплення і величезнагордість за те, що ми можемо зробити. Люди, присутні наплощі, дуже гарно сприймала дійство, особливо концертнаших дітей – він був сприйнятий з оплесками. Явважаю, що Україна була представлена дуже гарно і нависокому рівні”.

Також Михайло Костюк наголосив, що той факт, що

на площі Святого Петра у Ватикані з’явилася ялинкасаме з України, має для нас величезне моральнезначення. Ми – європейська країна, ми сповідуємоєвропейські цінності і ми приїхали в Європу зєвропейськими прагненнями.

Голова Львівської облдержадміністрації відзначив:„ Я роблю таке порівняння: ялинки з України – це якцеглини з України у будівництво європейського дому,того муру, до якого ми долучаємося, який повинен бутиміцним та рівнодоступним для усіх європейців”.

Як зазначив, Михайло Костюк, своє вітання ПапаРимський Бенедикт XVI проголосив українською мовою.

preparation. The word he shouts out isthe first word Jesus speaks in His pub-lic life: “Repent!”

Repentance is a power word. Itdoes not mean to feel sorry for one’s

past, and has nothing to do with feel-ings of guilt. It is an action word. Itmeans to turn around your life, your values, and your lifestyle, and to takeon a new direction. Repentance is atotal transforming experience.

Stop here for a moment. Am Iready to experience a deep turning

around in different parts of my life?What new directions need I take in mylife? What would John the Baptist sayto me concerning the values I have?

Christ is baptized! He comes up out of the water, and with him He carries the

whole world. He sees the heavensopened that Adam had closed against himself and his posterity. The Holy

Spirit bears witness to His divinity. Avoice sounds from heaven, for it is

from heaven that He has come down, He is the Savior of our souls – Epi-

pany vesper service.

This feast is called the Feast of Light. A theme in the Blessing of Wa-ter is the illumination of the whole cre-ated world by the Light of Christ. Weneed to hear this in the darkness of 2007-2008. As it is sung in the Bless-ing of Water, “ Today we have escapedfrom the darkness, and by the light of the knowledge of God we have beenilluminated.”

oday we celebrate one of themost important feasts of theChurch Year. This feast has

several names: Epiphany, Theophany,and Enlightenment. A popular nameamong our people is Jordan, becausewe celebrate the Baptism of Jesus andthe first manifestation of the Holy Trin-ity in the river of Jordan. On this feast,we have the Great Blessing of Water,which is used to bless our homes andourselves.

The blessing begins with areading from the beginning of the Gos-pel of St. Mark, which announces: “Thebeginning of the Good News of JesusChrist, the Son of God”. The an-nouncement is abrupt and to the point.St. Mark’s Gospel has no story of Je-sus’ birth, as in Matthew and Luke.There is no meditation on His eternalpre – existence, as in the beginning of St. John’s Gospel. What he does tell usin the beginning of his Gospel is whatthe real message of our Christmas cele-

bration is all about – Jesus Christ is theSon of God, and through His becomingone with us, He brings salvation. Theheart of the Christmas message is thatJesus is the fulfillment of God the Fa-ther’s plan of salvation for us. This isseen in the Morning Prayer sung onChristmas, “Man fell from the divinelife of grace – but now the wise Creator re – creates man again – You have setus free – sharing in our poverty youhave made our nature God – likethrough your union with it.”

The celebration of this feast

begins by taking us out to the desertwilderness. Throughout the Bible, thedesert wilderness is a special symbolicplace – a place of testing, a place of spiritual confrontation and a place of cleansing. We will have more aboutthis when we enter the time of the GreatFast. Is it not the first timeangelic forces come close to people andwith them form a single nation, a heav-enly and earthly choir. This universalglorification, which is heard by the one

polyphony of the heaven and the earth,shows in the mystery of the Incarnationof the Son of God that the heavenly anddivine reality will unite with human,with his history, past, present and fu-ture. In this mystical unification of God

and human in the person of the newborn Jesus Christ, gifts are exchanged between them: the Creator offers hiseternal life to man, and life of mancompletely opens up to God, becomes aspace of his presence and actions.Therefore glorifying the newborn Sav-ior means first of all to have His pres-ence in our lives. Today, God really iswith us, in today's moment of history of our people, the united people of God,who learn from angels how to standwith dignity before God and praiseHim. Glorifying the newborn Savior with Christmas carols, we are together with the angels proclaiming the comingof the heavenly joy that eliminatesearthly sorrow and despair, giving hu-man the gift of eternal life with God.

“Christ descends from theheavens, welcome Him!” Meeting theSon of God, who in the human bodycame to earth, we recognize that GodHimself wanted to enter the life of eachone of us to take on himself all our sins,sicknesses, pains and problems, andgive us His eternal bliss and happiness.

The moment when the Savior toucheseach of us, and with the power and ac-tions of the Holy Spirit brings his eter-nal life to our human life, we call theHoly Mystery. There are seven suchmysteries in the Christian Church: Bap-tism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance,Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders,and Matrimony. These mysteries arethe fruits and consequences of the birthof God in human flesh. Whenever weaccept and take part in a Holy Mystery,

we are given a great gift of the meetingwith the Lord Christ, and this meetingtransfigures our lives, filling it with thelove of the Father, the grace of the Son,and the power of the Holy Spirit. ThusGod's presence through the Holy Mys-teries makes us participants in God'slife, in accordance with the words of St.Athanasius: "God became man so thatman might become God." It is espe-cially important for us to discover andevaluate the grace of Christ's Nativityin the new year of 2012, which our Church, in its preparations for the cele-

bration of the 1025th anniversary of theBaptism of Rus’-Ukraine, devotes tothe Holy Mystery. To meet the new-

born Christ today can be primarily inthe Holy Mysteries, especially in theEucharist, which is the center and cul-

mination of the life of the Church. Byour lively participation in the mysteries,especially Penance and the Eucharist,we can best prepare for and celebratethis year’s nativity of our Lord JesusChrist. And during this New Year let usstrive to understand more deeply anddiscover the priceless treasure of theHoly Mysteries in the Church of Christand use them for our sanctification andsalvation.

Ті, хто славитьновонародженого Божого Сина, – цепередусім небесні ангели. Це вонивідкривають перед пастирями, якістоять вночі на сторожі своїх отар,чудесну новину про народженняСина Божого, співаючи величнупісню: «Слава на висотах Богові, ан а з е м л і м и р л ю д я м й о г овподобання» (Лк. 2, 14). Чи невперше ангельські сили стаютьпоруч з людьми і разом з нимитворять один -єдиний народ ,небесний і земний хор. Цявселенська прослава, яка лунає

єдиним багатоголоссям неба і землі,наче показує, що у таїнствівоплочення Сина Божого небесна ібожественна дійсність поєднується злюдиною, з її історією, минулим,сучасним і майбутнім. Нашою живою участю уСвятих Таїнствах, зокрема Покаянніта Євхаристії, ми найкраще зможемопідготуватися та відсвяткуватицьогорічне Різдво Господа нашогоІсуса Христа. А впродовж цьогоНового року стараймося глибшезбагнути і відкрити для себебезцінний скарб Святих Таїнств уХристовій Церкві та користати з них

Тому ця ангельсьблаговість: «Не бійтеся!» – маєособливою силою промовити нині

наших сердець. «Христос на землбадьортеся!» – співає сьогодХристова Церква. Бадьорімося вми, бо присутність на земвоплоченого Христа – нашого Спа

– це для нас джерело невимовнсили й надії в нашому земному житз й о г о з м а г а н н я м и твипробуваннями. Лише у Йонародженні, у Різдві незмінноговічного Бога, народжується новекраще майбутнє, яке дає змістпевність нашому теперішньому. Хсьогодні віднайшов свою надію м а л е н ь к і й Д и т и н і новонародженому Спасителеві, твже знайшов допомогу і силу дсвого непростого, мінливого непевного сьогодення.

Дорогі в Христі! У цсвітлий і радісний день славмновонародженого Ісуса нашопрабатьківською колядою. Нехвона сьогодні усуне з наших сердеусякий страх і смуток. Зустрічайсьогодні Предвічного Бога відкритисерцем і сповняймося Його небесно

благодаттю, радістю та миром. Нехця різдвяна радість підбадьоритьскріпить нас у нашій щоденній прата молитві, дарує єдність і злагодунаших громадах. Нехай різдвязірка, що колись привела мудреців вертепу, де спочивав Цар вікосвітить нам дорогу до нашомайбутнього в Христі-Ісусі. Христ рождається! Славімо Його!

Божої любови,виявлене ународженні Сина Божого,як іконопис РіздваХристового. Поєднаннядуховної і земської дійсністьпостійно кличуть до роз-думів і молитовноговзнесення. Зовсім невипадково ікона вповніспівпадає з літургійнимитекстами і духом відправ.Елементи розповіді прості.

Ось ясла і Дитя, Марія іЙосиф, ангели і т.п.. Але їхспіввідношення євинятковими, такими, щосягають поза межі людськогодосвіду.

В печері, поруч з яслами,стоять віл та осел.Незважаючи, що в Євангелії про народження Спасителянемає згадки про них, вонизакріплені в різдвяну ікону.Покликаючись на пророкаІсаю (1:3) Церква звертаєувагу на важливий деталь:"Віл знає свого власника, аосел - ясла пана свого. Ізраїль не знає Мене, не звертає уваги народ Мій наМене." Замітка завждиактуальна.

Неподалік ясел, надорожному ліжку лежитьМатір Божа - відвернена, взадумі, її вираз спокійний. Втрадиції Старого Завітунезбагнений Бог - Ягве - є завеликим таїнством щоби Йогоможна було б назвати поімени, а вже споглядати Богає впрост понад людськіможливості. Марія -вихованка святині і свідомасвого Божеськогоматеринства, перед Немовлям-Спасителем є повна покори.їй тяжко розуміти чудо

Іконописецьчасом міняє позу Богородиці.Для підкреслення її дівицтвапредставляє її у півсидячійпозі, а коли є побажанимзвернути увагу на людськуприроду Бога-Дитяти, тодіДіва Марія лежить задуманаі відпочиває, а часомпоглядом співчуває свойомузажуреному обручниковіЙосифові. В різдвяномуірмосі на місце "Достойно"співаємо: "Любе по нам, бобезпечне від страху, вигідне мовчання ..."

У яслах, завинений впелени, лежить Ісус. Творецьсвіту, упокорений неміччюнемовляти. Світло світу утемноті земського упадку.Його пелени є рівнозначні зпеленами мерця іХристового поховання, і тимДитя у яслах-жертовникуз'ясовує Божий плян спасіннялюдства.

Віддаленняйого особи знову підкреслює"поборення законів природи"у Дівственному зачаттіХриста. Задума Йосифаприховує сумніви та турботийого душі. Ікону доповнюютьангели, пастушки, тримудреці і часом жінки-поветухи. Ангелипрославляють Троїчного Богана небесах і на землі, розділяють радість з усіма,хто хоче прийнятиСпасителя. З одного бокуікони пастушки, які миттювідізвалися на ангельськувістку. З другого боку тримудреці, які на підставізнання пішли заВифлеємською зореюпоклонитися Божому Дитяті.

Про пастушків і мудрецівпишуть Євангелисти Лука іМатей. Про поветухи знаємоіз переказів Ранньої Церкви.Поветух нераз додають дозображення народженняГосподнього, щоби знову ж

таки показати людськупотребу. В іконі багато сказано

про те, саме ким є Христос,як Він став Боголюдиною і докого Він прийшов. Марія єприкладом розважливої людини, яка з розсудливістюприйняла Бога цілим своїмєством. Йосиф, натомість,змагається із сумнівами, і єприкладом драми усього роду людського, який має

трудність прийняти те, що розум не всилі пояснити.Простенькі пастушки ісофістиковані мудреці по-своєму приходять довисновків про вічну Правду,любов Бога і плянубожествення кожної людини, яка створена наБожий образ; людина, якаспівпрацює з Божою ласкоювідзискати застрачену гріхомБожу подобу. Поветухи,одначе, заклопотані своїмділом і не свідомі подвижнихподій їхнього середовища. Алеі до них прийшов Христос. Ітут знову слова Ісаї єактуальні.

Якщо добрий іконопис єнатхнений богослов'ям інаскрізь ним пронизаний, тообрази релігійної тематики єтільки образами.Богословського зв'язку міжзображеннями Марії, Йосифата Ісуса немає. Що більше,основні доктрини віри,тобто: Батьківство БогаОтця, взаємодія Пресвятої Трійці в Дівственнім зачаттіХриста і материнствоБогородиці є зовсім забуті.Образи релігійної тематикине спроможні передатиглибокі духовні поняття, бовони закорінені у людському

The earliest known indication tosuch a celebration comes in a passingstatement by St. Clement of Alexandriawho mentions that the Egyptians of histime celebrated the Lord's birth on May20. At the end of the 3rd century, theWestern Churches celebrated it in thewinter, and this was only accepted inRome in the middle of the 4th century.

Around that time it was agreed bythe Church all over the world to cele-

brate the nativity of our Lord JesusChrist on 25 December, most probablyto take the place of a pagan feast thateven Christians continued to celebrateuntil then.

At that time, and until the sixteenthcentury, the civil calendar in use theworld over was the Julian calendar,introduced by Julius Caesar in the year 46 B.C. This calendar considered theyear to be 365.25 days 4 and thus had aleap year every four years.

Towards the end of the sixteenth

century, Pope Gregory XIII of Rometook interest in studying astrology,dates and feasts. He noticed that thevernal equinox, the point at which thesun crosses the equator, making dayand night of equal length, starting thespring, used to fall on 21 March aroundthe time of the council of Nicea (A.D.325) which set the times for the eccle-siastical feasts. The vernal equinox athis time however fell on 11 March.

After consultation with scientists,he learned that the equinoctial year (or

solar year), which is the time the earthtakes to revolve around the sun fromequinox to equinox, was slightlyshorter than the Julian year. It was365.2422 solar days (approximately 11minutes and 14 seconds shorter). Thismakes a difference of a full day every128.2 years, hence the difference of 10days in the beginning of spring be-tween the fourth and sixteenth centu-ries.

Pope Gregory XIII decreed:

In A.D. 1582, October 5th will becalled October 15th.

The Julian calendar should be short-ened by 3 days every 400 years, bymaking the centenary year a normal 365-day year, not a leap year, except if its number is divisible by 400.

Thus the year 1600 remained a leap year as usual, while 1700, 1800 and 1900 had only 365 days each and the year 2000 was a leap year of 366 days.

This new calendar came to beknown as the Gregorian calendar, andis the common civil calendar in use inour world today.

Following these decrees, as theChurch of Rome celebrated Christmas25 December 1582 A.D., the EasternChurches still fasted as they showed 15December on their Julian calendars. Asthe Church of the East celebrated thefeast of Nativity, it was already 4 Janu-ary 1583 A.D. on Pope Gregory's new

calendar. That gap widened by 3 mdays over the next 4 centuries. Thiwhy the Churches who still celebon 25 December according to the cient Julian calendar find themselvin the 21st century, celebrating the tivity on 7 January of the civil Gregian new calendar. This will becomJanuary after the year 2100 A.D.

According to the poll, 9Ukrainians will celebrate Eastern thodox Christmas using the ol Julian calendar , while 61.3% of spondents will celebrate New Year ing the older Julian calendar. 10.3%those polled planned to celebrate thodox Christmas on the Gregorcalendar, while 49% of respondeconsider it a holiday too.

Western region residents traditially celebrate the New Year holimore rarely than the average figurethe country (85.1%), while they c

brate Christmas (97.4%) and New Yholiday (77.6%) on the Julian calenmore often than on average in country.

People aged over 60 (82.7%) c brate the New Year holiday rarely. The younger the respondentsmore often they celebrate New Y

using the older Julian calendar. The poll was conducted by Razu

kov center from December 9 to Dece ber 16, 2011. A total of 2,008 respdents aged over 18 from all of thegions of Ukraine, Kyiv city and Crimwere interviewed. Respondents fr131 towns and settlements were polincluding 79 towns and 52 rural setments. The poll's margin of error2.3%.
