FEEDING2016 17 ANNUAL REPORT

GR ER

Page 2: 2 0 1 6 1 7 AN U L REPORT F E E DING GR E R

Thanks to tremendous community partners, including farmers, grocers, volunteers, donors and friends, we’ve continued to grow the reach and impact of the Food Bank into the 29 counties and hundreds of communities we serve.

This year’s report shares snapshots of lives changed by Feeding a Greater Atlanta and

North Georgia — because of your help.

We also highlight the diversity of programs we bring to working families, children and seniors who struggle to put food on their tables.

With your help, more than 59.5 million meals reached our neighbors last year.

Thank you for your generosity.

Our mission is to FIGHT HUNGER by engaging, educating and empowering our community.

We feed hungry neighbors today, and create solutions to end hunger tomorrow. This year, we laid the groundwork for a new “Food First Pantry” model that aims to move working families from crisis to stability more quickly, and reduce their need for food assistance over time.

We convened five partner agencies, the clients they serve, researchers from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University, and advisors from local and national organizations in the project design phase. The initial Food First Pantries will launch at two sites in 2018, with more planned in the future.

BRE & FAMILY

Bre and her husband Brian have three children, Nathan Brian, Makayla (pictured) and Braxton. Bre recalls a time when there never seemed to be enough.

“No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t get ahead,” said Bre, shift manager for a national fast food chain.

“I didn’t want to admit we needed help, but three kids and power and water, and the bills begin to add up.”

Things improved when they began receiving groceries from Food Bank partner agency House of Hope. “They give you enough to come up with a few whole meals a

could have spaghetti one night or chicken with all the sides, and then we would have breakfast for almost a week.”

CHILDREN

During the summer months, when school meals aren’t available, many struggling children don’t get enough to

with events in Hapeville, Gainesville and College Park. We worked with various feeding sites across our service area to distribute over 41,000 summer meals to kids .

Our School Pantry Program thrived by distributing over 426,000 meals to families in need at 20 schools across our service area. School pantries provide an easily accessible source of nutritious food to low-income students and their families in a convenient, familiar location.
