Vol. 41 No. 12 10 May 2012 Dear members of the Marcellin College family, Last Saturday saw the commencement of the full first round of the AGSV winter season. Two things caught my eye as I wandered around to the various sports being played on Saturday morning. The first was the large number of parents and other family members who came along in support of the boys. The sense of community spirit and support on display on Saturday mornings at Marcellin is quite inspiring. Not only do parents enthusiastically cheer and encourage their sons but many too provide tangible support for our coaches in a range of ways. I would like to thank our parents and families who continue to support all our College events through their patronage. In this year of Presence at Marcellin I encourage you all to think about how you can involve yourself fully in the life of the College. The other thing I observed last Saturday was the large number of students who participated in the variety of sports on offer. Of particular note was the incredible number of junior students who participated with great excitement and eagerness. I have often said that student connectedness to school and the sense of belonging they develop as a result of participation in the array of co-curricular activities presented to them is an important factor in overall success in other aspects of school life including academic achievement. On Saturday too I attended the Marcellin Old Collegians football club luncheon, the purpose of my attendance, apart from continuing to foster a strong relationship with this important arm of our College Community was the presentation by the football club of two defibrillators for use by the College community. Thanks to a joint initiative by the club and the College we now have three of these life saving devices which will be placed at strategic locations around the College. I am very grateful to Jennifer Williams and Dr Bernie Crimmins who led this important project along with Mark Birrell, President of the Old Collegians Football club for their support of the Marcellin Community. Thanks also to longtime friend and benefactor of our College, Tim Naughton for his continued generosity in supporting this initiative. In recent times I have been very encouraged by the way our Old Collegians Football club has developed a number of projects in line with the strong social justice stance of Marcellin College. As part of one such program the football club worked in association with the College and the Exodus community in West Heidelberg to support a family in need. The club pooled its resources and expertise to support this family in making much needed repairs to their home which could not have happened without the generous support of many within the club. I would like to thank all those who provided their valuable time, resources and expertise as an altruistic gesture of support to those in need in our community. Last week the Marcellin College Jazz band attended the Mt Gambier Jazz festival. This music event is one of the most prestigious and significant Jazz festivals held in Australia. Our students gained valuable experience not only through watching, listening to and rubbing shoulders with some of the best Jazz musicians in the country they also performed at the event. Thanks to Nick Cowall, Head of Performing Arts and music teachers Scott Linder and Matt Thomas for giving their time and talent to support the boys who attended. Yours sincerely, Mark Murphy Principal

REFLECTION

PARENTS AND TEACHERS WORKING TOGETHER

I dreamed I stood in a studio

And watched two sculptors there,

The clay they used was a young child's mind

And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher; the tools being used

Were books and music and art,

One a parent with a guiding hand

And a gentle, loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled

With touch that was deft and sure,

While the parent labored just as hard

And polished and smoothed it o'er.

When at last their task was done

They were proud of what they had wrought,

For the things they had molded into the child

Could neither be sold nor bought.

And both agreed they would have failed

If they had worked alone;

For behind the parents stood the school

And behind the teacher, the home.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Mr Adriano Di Prato

Annual Musical Production Marcellin College and Our Lady of Mercy College and are proud to present Urinetown as our 2012 musical production.

Below is some information from our 2012 Drama-Vice Captain, Joshua Briers about the musical: Yes ladies and gentlemen that time has come again, where we warm up our voices and put on our leg warmers. It’s Show Time! It’s my privilege to announce that we are in the final phase of this exciting journey that is ‘Urinetown’, this show presents the finest that both Marcellin and OLMC have in the performing arts and I think that all involved should be applauded for their efforts. With special thanks to the amazing cast (Go Us!) and the continued dedication and support of; Michael Calmer, Clive Haese, Natalie Ciardulli, Lisa McVilly, Nicholas Cowall, David Blackman, Melissa Rapinett and all those who have graciously given up their time especially the members of FOMPA. But what is Urinetown? You may ask, well Urinetown is a tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution set against the back-drop of worldwide ecological distress. We follow a lover’s tale with a fatal twist, a cunning cop with nothing to lose and the realization that “evil” is in the eyes of the beholder. Who will

come out on top? Will love conquer evil? AND WILL YOU ABLE TO GET MY AUTOGRAPH AFTER THE SHOW? Who knows? But if you want to find out the answer to these questions and more come with us on the journey to ‘Urinetown’, it’s so exciting you’ll wet yourself …… But hurry limited seating available!

Where: OLMC Performing Arts Theatre When: From 18 th May Bookings: http://www.trybooking.com/Event/EventSearch.aspx?keyword=Urinetown Tickets went on sale on Friday 4th May. I encourage the Marcellin community to come along and support our boys with this production.

Generations in Jazz Last weekend Marcellin’s Senior Stage Band participated in the Generations in Jazz festival at Mt Gambier. Below is a reflection from Michael Mirabella, Stage Band Captain : The Marcellin College Senior Big Band, led by its dedicated director Mr Thomas, were lucky enough to be able to participate in Australia’s biggest jazz festival ‘Generations in Jazz’ which is held in Mount Gambier every year. This festival hosts an incredible array of music to the thousands of students that are spread across four band divisions and one vocal division based on ability to not only have individual talent in jazz

Page 4: 1st XVIII / 1st XI v Assumption AGS Round 2 Mother’s … · 18-26 Urinetown School Performances 18 1st VIII / 1st XI v PEGS 19 AGS Round 3 ... but also based on how well they work

but also based on how well they work as a band/jazz vocal group. Our band was placed into Division 3, as it was the first time Marcellin had entered the competition and had a spread of students from Year 9s to Year 12s. The band was up bright and early on Friday morning ready to leave the school for our seven hour bus trip at 7am and accompanied by our wonderful teachers Mr Thomas, Mr Cowall, Mr Lindner and Mrs Karas. After finally arriving in Mt Gambier, it was clear accommodation was hard to come by with over 2,700 students attending in this festival but we were lucky enough to stay at the Blue Lake Motel which provided a more than comfortable place to sleep. With the intensive festival schedule it was difficult to find a spare minute to relax during the weekend trip but the teachers treated us with a visit to what Mount Gambier is famous for (besides the massive jazz festival) and that is the Blue Lake Volcano. There was no chance for relaxing when Saturday came around, and it was now serious business as we went to listen to some of the higher division bands from schools such as Blackburn High, Scotch College, Yarra Valley and Wesley College and were absolutely blown away by the clarity and accuracy of their performances; we knew that this wasn’t going to be so easy to win. The time came for our performance and after what seemed to be a few nerves around the group the Marcellin College Big Band came out dressed immaculately and played a fantastic set list with some great solos performed by Ben Cunningham, Daniel McAdam and Vincent Marciano as well as a few other small solos; this gave the adjudicators some tough decisions to make. That night, the several schools were treated by a mind-blowing concert with performances from James Morrison, Ross Irwin, the vocal group ‘The Idea of North’, legendary composer and saxophone player Gordon Goodwin and even a guest appearance from ‘Hey Hey it’s Saturday’ host Daryl Somers. After the fun and excitement of Saturday was over it was unfortunately time to head back home on the Sunday after attending a master class from the Grammy Award winning musician: Gordon Goodwin. It was a great experience to see such wonderful jazz performances and to see 2700 other students with a love and passion for music. Everyone will remember this trip for rest of their lives and those who will hopefully be able to return next year will be waiting in great anticipation. There was a lot of work put into this group from Mr Thomas and there is no thank you big enough to cover appreciation the band had for his leadership through the group but also a big thank you to Mr Cowall, Mr Lindner and Mrs Karas for their organising of the weekend, this trip was incredible. Great Transport Race On Thursday 3rd May the following geography students, Lucas Mallamace, Tom Blake, Jake Sharples and Cory Lloyd-McIntosh , with Ms Erin Gamble participated in the Great Transport Race. They battled inclement weather to come 3rd in the Eastern Heat. Terrific achievement. Now in its fourth year, the GTR provides students with a unique way to learn how to catch public transport to favourite destinations in a race format inspired by the Amazing Race.

Image: Miss Gamble with Cory, Jake, Tom & Lucas Below is a reflection from Jake Sharples: On Thursday the 3rd of May, I and three other students participated in the Great Transport Race situated in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs accompanied by Miss Gamble. It was the first time Marcellin has participated in this event and it proved to be a great learning initiative. With limited knowledge of what the event had install for us we arrived at Box Hill Town Hall at 8: 30 in the morning and were briefed about the event and safety rules of public transport. We were given a range of maps and transport routes to help us get to certain destinations and complete questions using trains, trams and buses quicker than the 30 other participating groups of five. Before we left the starting point we were given 30 minutes of planning time

Page 5: 1st XVIII / 1st XI v Assumption AGS Round 2 Mother’s … · 18-26 Urinetown School Performances 18 1st VIII / 1st XI v PEGS 19 AGS Round 3 ... but also based on how well they work

which proved vital in the end result. Each destination was given a point value of five, ten or fifteen minutes with the aim to get the most overall points at the end of the day. Therefore a big amount of strategy was involved as it was impossible to get to all destinations in the given time. After an action packed day of exercise both mentally and physically, we arrived at the finishing point just before the required time, knowing that we had all learnt something from our experience. It was an added bonus to finish 3rd in the event out the 30 groups that attended. We now look forward to participating in the Great Transport Race final on May the 22nd in Melbourne’s CBD. Winter Uniform I wish to remind all parents & students that full winter uniform requirements and the College’s expectations of grooming & dress are outlined on Page 13 of the 2012 Student Planner. Any student who attends the College unable to be in complete uniform must complete an “out-of-uniform” request note (found at the back of the planner) and obtain a Uniform Pass from their respective House Coordinator during morning pastoral. Students in breach of the Colleges uniform expectations, especially on grooming, will be issued wish a consequence, which may include being sent home. The onus is on the individual student to attend the College each day with the correct hair style and length, clean shaven, etc.

DIRECTOR OF SENIOR STUDENTS (Years 10-12) Mr Jamie McIlroy

Year 12 Guest Speaker and Assembly On Tuesday 15th May the Year 12 Student will be having a guest speaker for the first two periods. It is compulsory for Year 12 students to attend and they will find the speaker engaging and inspiring. Following the presentation there shall also be an important assembly for the Year 12s regarding the GAT, Year 12 Formal, memorabilia, VTAC applications, and other matters pertaining to the end of their first semester. Keys Please is an informative and interactive forum for students and their parents/guardians that introduce them to the different skills they will need when learning to drive, including some valuable tips to help you get that all-important license. Run by VIC ROADS, the Keys Please Learner Driver Seminar was held on Thursday 10th May in the Lecture Theatre. Our Year 10 students were in attendance with Gina Andrews, our presenter from VIC ROADS. Gina spoke about the need for a joint partnership between the boys and their parents. It was very insightful to see the tips that she gave, both for the boys as they embark on a partnership with their parents/guardians that must see the boy’s clock up a minimum of 120 hrs of logged driving experience before they are eligible to go for their probationary license. Year 12 Formal - Friday 15 th June On behalf of our College Principal, Mr Mark Murphy, I would like to invite Year 12 students to the 2012 Year 12 Formal. This annual event has been a highlight of the Year 12 social calendar for many years and provides a wonderful opportunity for teachers, our Year 12 boys and their partners to come together and enjoy a wonderful evening together. Tickets will be on sale on Friday 18th May and Friday 25th May. A letter with all the details has been distributed to all Year 12 students and spare copies are available at Student Services Reception. Please note that both permission forms and the ticket order form need to be completed before any money will be accepted on these two dates. Year 12 Memorabilia Over the next six weeks Year 12 students will also have the opportunity to order Year 12 Memorabilia for 2012. The ordering will be done on line and payment and finalizing the order needs to conclude by the end of term to allow time for production.

Uniform requirements and grooming expectations Page 13 of the Student Planner outlines the Colleges expectations in regards to uniform and grooming Expectations. Students have been reminded that spray jackets may only be worn outside the classroom when it is raining, but students must still carry their blazer to school. Students have also been reminded to have no facial hair and need to be clean shaven at all times. Whilst it may be possible for students to use first aid facilities to shave we remind parents that it is a College expectation that all students are clean shaven. It is advisable that all student uniform items are clearly named should your son loose an item of clothing.

IMPROVING LITERACY AND LEARNING FOR SENIOR STUDENTS Mrs Nives Nibali (Literacy Coordinator)

We come to the final week on this series of Literac y tips for senior students. Students at a senior level, Secondary and Tertiary, are expected to have a more sophisticated understanding of the resources they use. Verifying knowledge and being a ble to select the most appropriate resource is crucial as these skills underpin all study now and in your son’s future.

15. Bibliography and References

Is there a bibliography? Are the references from respected, peer reviewed sources? Are there a variety of sources or does the text rely on only one? Is there a conflict of interest when the author only uses one or him/herself as the main resource? How can the writer of the text assure the reader that he/she has all the facts correct? Has he/she done this? Can you trust and rely on the sources? If there are any charts, graphs or pictures in the text, are those sources cited?

16. The Internet

ANYONE can put information up on the internet. It is very important to be discerning and check these sources as you would any other.

How reputable is the source? Who is the author of the site? Does the database publish articles that are also in print (like newspapers and journals) Is the web page academic, objective, personal (as in blogs) or an advertisement?

17. Anything Else????????

What else do you need to know about the text? What other things may influence my reading of this text?

Make a list of other aspects you feel are important when researching and accessing information.

Feel free to email me with any questions or feedback. Let me know how you go in these discussions with your son and certainly pass on any gains/insights. [email protected]

THE MELBOURNE MARIST GROUP Ms Angela Tsotsos

The Heidelberg Project The Melbourne Marist group decided that they wanted to do something for our community and through the encouragement of Br Harry Prout and his involvement with the Exodus Community in Heidelberg he suggested that we help a family in need by helping to paint someone’s house. The person he suggested was a single mother with two small children who needed our help. Michael Noonan and I contacted Helen and made a time to check out the job and find out what needed to be done. The task was greater

Page 7: 1st XVIII / 1st XI v Assumption AGS Round 2 Mother’s … · 18-26 Urinetown School Performances 18 1st VIII / 1st XI v PEGS 19 AGS Round 3 ... but also based on how well they work

than either of us could do. She needed irrigation pipes around the perimeter of the house, ventilation ducts for the roof, plastering and filling in of holes in her walls that were too big to repair. Only when this work had been completed were we able to begin to paint. As this was well beyond our expertise we turned to our Marcellin Community. Mark Birrell the President of the Old Collegians Football Club came to the rescue, and some amazing Old Collegians and members of the football club: Mark Birrell, Anthony Bortolotto, Adrian Gasparini, Vin Considine a myriad of young footballers and Marcellin Staff, David Desilva, Ben Frize, Michael Noonan and Chris Pattison, who gave up weekends to help out. A very big thank you must go to the people who volunteered their services, equipment, financial support, paint, plaster and one member who wants to remain anonymous donated a TV for Helen and the children to use. We started this venture in October 2011 and it was completed in April 2012. Marcellin Champagnat did not just encourage us to value manual work. He led the Brothers by example, he carried out projects with great enthusiasm and as his family we do not hesitate to roll up our sleeves and get dust, paint and mud on our hands.

MEDIATION TRAINING Ms Rosemary Chapple

Twelve Year 9 and 10 boys are continuing their training in becoming Peer Mediators, with the assistance of Juan Peake from the Family Mediation Centre. The students are learning skills in communication, negotiation and problem solving. When they have finished training, students will be qualified to assist younger students who have a dispute. The twenty hour training course is also equipping students with skills that they can use in everyday life at home, school, and work. “I had no idea listening took such energy” and “You really have to concentrate on what people are saying” the boys have commented. “These boys are among the best student mediators I have trained” Juan told me, “they really pick up the skills quickly and use them effectively”. Mediation will be introduced as an option for problem solving in Term 3 this year. Image: Juan Peake from the Family Mediation Centre with some of the mediators in training

MARCELLIN VERSUS OLMC INTERSCHOOL FRIENDLY DEBATE Mrs Christina Engelbogen (Marcellin Debating Coordi nator)

Last Thursday 3rd May, the Marcellin Debating Team hosted a friendly interschool debate between the Year 10 teams of Marcellin and Our Lady of Mercy Heidelberg. The topic was “That children nowadays are growing up too fast.” Marcellin argued the Affirmative case while OLMC took the Negative. Conducted in the Placidus Lecture Theatre, the event was supported by an attentive audience of Marcellin and OLMC students and teachers, including our Principal Mr Murphy. The event was organised by Debating Captain Daniel Sujster and Vice-Captain John Polizzi, along with their OLMC counterparts. Coached by Ms Piva, the Marcellin Year 10 team consisted of Lucas Ibrahim, Sheyan Gunapala and Adam Wood. Team adviser was Antoni Skoraczynski. The Adjudicators were a panel of senior students from both schools, who did an expert job. Both teams presented well-researched and compelling cases, but the OLMC rebutted with great confidence, narrowly defeating their worthy opponents. The students from both schools had a lot of fun planning and organizing, preparing the cases and performing in front of a large audience. It was good practice for the teams, who participate regularly in the Debaters Association of Victoria interschool competition at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School. So far this year, the five Marcellin debating teams have won and lost an equal number of debates in the Thursday evening competition. Our interschool friendly versus OLMC was an enjoyable experience that we hope to repeat later in the year. Thank you to all who helped with the arrangements and to those who attended on the day.

RUGBY – ROUND 2

Mr Simon Strachan (Teacher in charge of Rugby) After a successful first round Marcellin Rugby had a sense check with only one of the five teams winning this week. Even more dramatic was that only one team scored any points. This shows that we still need to do a lot more work to complete with the big established Rugby schools. All eyes were on the U13s as they played their first game for Marcellin, with virtually all the team playing their first ever game of Rugby. Trinity were much too strong on the day but the Marcellin boys started to show that they were getting it together in the second half. The U14s and U15s lost to very strong Melbourne Grammar teams but showed the enthusiasm and effort of Marcellin boys. The 1stXV also went down to a very strong Brighton Grammar team 27 to nil but can take the positive that they played for most of the game with fourteen players against the full strength Brighton with nine reserves on the bench. It was left to the U16s to show how it should be done running in nine tries against St Kevin’s two at St Kevin’s. The U16s are becoming a formidable combination and look to be developing very well.

LAVALLA HOUSE – SOCIAL JUSTICE 2012

In 2012, Lavalla House has chosen CatholicCare as o ur organisation to focus on for Social Justice awareness, education and fundraising .

CatholicCare relies on the community’s support in order to provide programs and services to individuals, families and newly arrived communities throughout the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Geelong. CatholicCare’s vision is to improve the lives of those in need, prevent further social need and advocate for greater opportunities and fairer social structures for the most vulnerable in our society. Some of the many services provided by CatholicCare are refugee settlement and support, family and relationship counselling, mediation, community development and education.

This year the SRC body of Lavalla House, have decid ed that we will focus our Social Justice work on the African Dads and Kids Program, which is part of the Relationship Education Unit - CatholicCare Archdiocese of Melbou rne.

The African Dads and Kids Program takes fathers away with one of their children for a camping weekend of fun, bonding activities and learning. The men explore the differences between being a father in Africa and a father in Australia and discuss how to address the challenges they and their children face in adapting to a new culture and new roles. Many refugees find it challenging to keep their families together, so strengthening the family unit is critical to successful settlement in Australia. Dads often say they get so much out of the camps they ask to attend the next camp with their other children. Word about this program has spread quickly throughout our African communities, to the point where demand far outweighs availability. Some of the fathers now feel empowered to act as community leaders and mentors here in Australia, passing on their learning to other men in their communities. Unfortunately, the funding received does not cover the demand for this very valuable program.

Lavalla House is once again using the Entertainment Books as a means of raising funds to support this fantastic program which benef its not just the African fathers and their children, but all of our community. If you w ould like help us in our fundraising, details on how to order your Entertainment Book for yourself, a family member or friend are included in this edition of the Eagle.
