Hazard: Workers were trying to move large cribbing out from under a 48” pipe . Wet conditions made the cribbing slippery and created potential back strain and pinch point hazards .

Corrective Actions: Holes were drilled into the cribbing and rope handles were installed . The holes enabled employees to keep their fingers clear of the cribbing eliminating the pinch point . The handles allowed employees to work in a more ergonomic position eliminating back strains .

Winners of the Hazard Recognition - Near Miss Program receive cash awards and recognition . The program also includes a bonus of $1,000 for any hazard recognition that ultimately results in a policy

change . As a result of this program, Cajun has recognized a significant increase in the number of hazards and near misses being reported and corrected .

Jeff McCarthy Operator - Earth Moving EquipmentChevron-Cedar Bayou Infrastructure Pre-Planning ProjectCajun Constructors, LLC

Hazard: Jeff recognized that Cajun didn’t have a probing training procedure . Failure to probe correctly can result in an increased risk of striking and damaging underground piping and utilities . Corrective Actions: Jeff worked with the Safety Manager to develop and implement training for the use of probe rods and the correct procedures for a variety of situations .

Hazard: A tractor trailer arrived on site to deliver 42” x 40’ pipe casing . Jason noticed that the pipes were stacked 2 high with no vertical supports and were held in place by straps and chokers . This causes the potential of one pipe rolling off while the other is unloaded .Corrective Actions: The decision was made to move a track-hoe to the opposite side and use its bucket to hold up the pipes . Using this method and repositioning the straps, the pipes were safely unloaded one at a time .

Workplace Craft TrainingWhen the word “training” is mentioned, thoughts immediately go to an instructor going over PowerPoint slides and lecturing about new skills . This type of training feels more like something done to an employee .

Quality comprehensive craft training is fundamental to the development of a skilled workforce . The majority of new skill development occurs informally, through collaborative problem-solving and the learner’s independent study .

It’s beneficial to consider a leadership training goal as creating opportunities for employees to learn on and about their jobs .

Benefits of training employees to be better at their craft:

• Increases productivity . Ongoing learning ensures that team members have the ability to get more done and continually improve .

• Creates a safe environment . While not glamorous, safety matters . It reduces risk and insurance costs .

• Enables hiring of employees with the right attitude and best fit with the team . Skills like programming languages or database management can be taught; it’s harder to teach a strong work ethic or good attitude .

• Boosts employee engagement and effectiveness . Engaged employees are more productive . They feel a personal connection and pride in their work .

• Exhibits innovation and agility . Connecting employees to opportunities to develop skills and abilities on an ongoing basis means that the organization will be prepared to respond to changing circumstances .

• Creates a solid team . Teamwork is more than working alongside other people . All members of successful teams actively participate .

• Shows them you care . Investing in employee development is connected to increased job satisfaction and employee retention .

Sasol Mega Project - Mega Pour

Every so often in the lifespan of a project, a great challenge and an opportunity to showcase the unique capability of our organization to marshal personnel, equipment, and resources toward a single goal, presents itself . The Unit 63 Reactor Mat foundation located in the LDPE Unit 63 on the Sasol Mega-Project presented such an opportunity . This massive foundation required the installation of 6,000 cubic yards of concrete, 4,349 square feet of formwork, and 1,085 tons of reinforcement steel in a single monolithic pour . The reinforcement steel in the foundation consists of 4 mats, along with dowels for 156 pedestal/ column assemblies and 721 linear feet of wall . Due to the 6-foot foundation thickness, temperature monitoring and controlling was required during and after the concrete placement . Completing a foundation of this magnitude requires detailed planning, coordination of personnel and resources, along with focused execution .

Cajun began planning the operation in November, 2016 and targeted February 19, 2017, to complete the foundation pour . The foundation was poured right on schedule . Project Superintendent Darin Benoit led the effort to organize and plan the execution of work . Harry Leblanc

and Shelby Knight managed the planning and execution of concrete placement and finishing . Jim Mejeur advised and assisted with all aspects of constructability . Lance Robillard planned and monitored all quality control functions for the operation including concrete delivery tracking, testing,

and post-placement temperature monitoring . Corey Duet planned and led the execution all formwork installation by the carpenter crew . Scott Carpenter and Wes Mallory planned and managed all reinforcement steel placements by 4 rodbuster crews (6 on weekends) . During the concrete placement, Patrick Cox and Marvin Lewis led the group of 40 finishers, who placed and finished the concrete for over 10 straight hours . Albert Mott managed the preparation and execution of site logistics to include: light plant placement, concrete washout facility installation, equipment support, and flagging operations . From November to February, the key leaders met weekly and planned every single aspect of the placement to ensure

success including: risk mitigation measures, coordination with Dunham Price to ensure concrete supply, and meetings with Fluor-Technip Integrated to ensure all site logistics were in place .

Form and reinforcement steel installation for the foundation began in the first week of November, 2016 and was successfully completed on February 17th, providing Kevin Dimartino’s survey crew sufficient time to verify form and reinforcement steel positioning prior to concrete placement . Concrete placement began February 19th at 9:45 AM, on schedule . Cajun and Duhnam Price planned to place an average of 500-550 cubic yards an hour utilizing 3 batch plants, 5 pump trucks (with 2 in reserve), and 50 delivery trucks, over the course of 16 hours . However, during the first 3 hours, Duhnam price was averaging over 700 yards of concrete delivered per hour . Once that supply rate was established, Darin Benoit, Harry Leblanc, and Site Manager Kevin Rodrigue made the decision to deploy one of the reserve pump trucks at a pre-planned 6th location to facilitate placing the additional concrete . The concrete finishers adjusted the placement arrangement and efficiently placed the higher concrete rate with ease . This critical adjustment is the key factor that transformed the operation from successful to momentous . Successfully adapting to the higher concrete delivery, allowed the final

cubic yards to be placed and finished in just over 10 hours at 7:59 PM . Throughout the operation, all planned details and tasks were completed safely, on cue and without any major setbacks . Darin Benoit credits the overwhelming success of the operation to, “the ability of our team members to

efficiently communicate ideas and plan our work prior to engaging in our activities . This structure is just a large example of what we do day in and day out .”

The overall result of the operation consists of 24,742 man-hours expended to

deliver a quality product to SASOL, and place Cajun’s ownership to the largest and most successful concrete installation on both the Sasol Mega-Project and Cajun’s 44 year history .

Sasol’s LDPE Project Manager, Harry Dutreix, congratulated the team for the detailed planning that resulted in the pour being much better than expected .

Congratulations to all involved in such a fine demonstration of Cajun excellence from start to finish .

Louisiana’s Jump Start ProgramCajun Industries, LLC was on hand at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center as Ascension Parish students and their parents gathered information on Louisiana’s Jump Start program and visited with representatives from several career fields .

Jump Start is Louisiana’s new Career and Technical Education Program . Through Jump Start, students earn industry credentials while still in high school . Jump Start students attain NCCER industry credentials that employers value when deciding who to hire for entry-level positions; complete Career Readiness courses where students master workplace “soft skills” that help them find good jobs and succeed when they report to their first jobs; complete workplace experiences during high school that teach them about the world of work; complete course work that enables students to continue their education through employer training, technical college courses and eventually (if desired) at a four-year university .

Starting with the graduating class of 2018, high school students will have two pathways to complete high school graduation requirements:

1) TOPS University pathway is for students who plan to attend a four-year college or university . The program requires students to complete coursework that will qualify them for TOPS scholarships .

2) Jump Start pathway is for students interested in preparing for college and careers, requiring students to (a) complete coursework that prepares them to continue their education at a technical or community college; and (b) to earn industry credentials that will help them attain entry-level employment .

Now is the time for parents and caregivers to get involved with Jump Start! Work with your student’s school counselor to prepare their Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) and determine whether your student will select the TOPS University or the Jump Start pathway . Help your student select which Jump Start industry credential (carpentry, electrical, welding) they want to earn . All students, including those on a TOPS University pathway, can earn industry credentials in high schools .

How to Choose Between the ER & Urgent Care

401 (k) Plan - Out and About!

When you need care fast and don’t have access to your primary care doctor, should you go to urgent care or the ER? Knowing which conditions are fitting for each visit can save you both TIME and MONEY!

Helpful tips:

Call ahead and check insurance acceptance.

Some centers schedule online appointments

and notify you when the doctor is ready to

see you. No long waits!

Emergency rooms must treat the most

urgent needs first. Going to the ER with

a minor condition could result in a wait of

several hours and higher bills. Assess your

condition. Make the best choice for your

health, schedule, and wallet!!

Mike Lavespere Retires4! Four! Fourth! In 1976, Mike Lavespere decided to begin what became a 40-year adventure as the third employee that Lane Grigsby hired at Cajun, thus becoming employee number 4 . A new hire at Cajun today would have an employee number near 31,000!

After 40 years, Mike decided to retire and begin a new adventure with his children and grandchildren . We should all celebrate with Mike in this achievement .

Throughout his 40 years, Cajun changed faces many times . Mike participated in Cajun’s transformation from a start-up subcontractor performing small municipal projects to a well-known and respected general contractor executing $350 million, major infrastructure projects for the federal government .

The success of Cajun over its many years is attributed to the dedication of its employees like Mike . Mike has helped create a standard for management and estimating across the entire company . Most of the policies and practices that our estimators use today were created by Mike . His passion to make Cajun great was evident in his late hours and hard work, in his mentoring of younger employees and supporting partnerships with his peers, and in his genuine concern for others and belief in honest work for Cajun and its clients . He led the Public Works Division, estimating and managing construction of hundreds of treatment facilities, pump stations and miles of floodwalls .

Those who had the pleasure of working with Mike know that, while often quiet and always humble about his Cajun

contributions, he is most proud of being a husband, father, and granddaddy, grounded in his Christian beliefs . Mike has four children and six grand-children . Mike included his family in Cajun events and loved talking about the many joys of being a father and husband .

In December 2016, Mike closed his office door for the final time and walked out smiling, knowing that he left a job well done .

The Evolution of Something SpecialAs shown in the lead article of this issue, Cajun won an unprecedented 7 national awards at the Associated Builders and Contractors national convention held in Fort Lauderdale . This is such a wonderful testament of all of the hard work done by those responsible for these projects . From business development

to proposals to estimating, to project management to field leadership and craftsmen and women, Cajun is proven a national winner when compared to our peers by independent judges . What’s even more incredible, is four of our core competencies won an award…deep foundations, civil, mechanical and buildings It’s taken many of years, long hours and lots of hard work but the evolution of something special here at Cajun continues . Cajun is the place to enrich your career and has many opportunities for continued growth . My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you who participated in these award winning projects .

Another eye-catcher in this issue, which will certainly be a future award winner, is what’s going on at SASOL . A successful mega pour of 6,000 CY of concrete in one long day done with quality, productiveness and with the utmost care and consideration for safety . This was a job exceptionally well done by each of you participating on this project .

Congratulations go out to our near miss winners and our employees in the spotlight . Without people like you, our evolution of creating something special would not be alive and well . Lastly, we wish Mike Lavespere many years of happy retirement and we thank him for his 40 years of service to our company .

Until the next issue, be safe and be your brothers and sisters keepers .
