1st Mate™ adds another layer of boating safety by notifying a boat’s captain or its passengers if someone has fallen overboard. 1st Mate also serves as an effective deterrent to boat-and-engine theft.

1st Mate is compatible with all Mercury SmartCraft engines 40hp and higher manufactured since 2005.

The 1st Mate system includes wearable wristband fobs or carabiners for the captain and up to seven passengers that sync with the 1st Mate app.

App is used for account setup, system configuration and monitoring the status of the wearables.

WHAT IS 1ST MATE?

Industry’s first engine-integrated intelligent hub and wearable device that integrates with Mercury SmartCraft systems to provide safety alerts and information, including:

Man overboard monitoring for captain and up to 7 passengers

Distress Message capability

Theft Deterrent functionality


If the CAPTAIN (driver wearing the captain fob) falls overboard, 1st Mate:

• Immediately stops the engine(s)

• Sounds an audible alarm from the hub and mobile device

• Marks the location via GPS

• Sends alerts to the hub, the app and the wearables connected to the passengers onboard

• Sends instructions to passengers on how to return to the location where the captain went overboard*

If a PASSENGER wearing a fob

falls overboard, 1st Mate:

• Alerts the captain and all other passengers wearing a fob

• Sounds an audible alarm from the hub and mobile device

• Marks the location via GPS

• Provides continuously updated directions to the location where the passenger went overboard

* If passenger has 1st Mate app download-ed on their mobile device

How Does 1st Mate Work?


DISTRESS MESSAGE

If a captain (driver wearing the captain’s fob) falls overboard and can’t get back onboard, or passengers can’t return the boat to the captain, 1st Mate:

• Sends a distress message to the contacts in the app’s “In Case of Emergency” section when that feature has been enabled and a person either initiates the request or the countdown timer (previously set by the user) has completed

• Includes location, heading, date and time of the “man overboard” event in the distress message


THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM (TDS)

TDS can lock your engine(s) to prevent unauthorized use.

With 1st Mate, you can unlock the vessel via proximity of the captain’s wearable and/or the “unlock function” of the app (via PIN, fingerprint, face recognition, etc.). Mercury SmartCraft engines can also allow high-idle operation for service access to the vessel without unlocking it.

If compatible Mercury SmartCraft engines are removed from a boat, they are rendered nonfunctional without the unlocking “handshake” from the 1st Mate hub.

Disable in Neutral A setting that users can configure that turns off alerts if engine(s) is in neutral.

Over the Air Updates 1st Mate is capable of updating (to fix bugs or add new features) Hub software and the wearables via the mobile device.

Mobile Device App Interface App is the primary interface to set up/configure and view status of the system.
