Weather conditions during the period under discussion, Harch-Hay, are generally favorable for military operatione. River ~oagee are el1ghtly higher than during the winter months and traff1cabil1 ty is slightly reduced after the spring thaw. Theee factors uresent no major obetaclee, however.

· (b) Terrain: According to terrain regions, the area under study is located in the "tveet Coast Lowlands and Hilla1 • This general region extends for approximately 300 milee along the west coast and etretchee inland 25 to 100 miles.

The mor-e 1wuediate area is dom1rmted by the IMJIN river. Flat-floored, steep-walled valleys wind through the area, rlanked in many placee by steen eroded hills. Lack of veaetat1on oaueee rapid rum-off during the rainy season, and flash floods occur. Rice paddies occupy most of the valley floors, and dry crops are cultivated in the more sandy areae of the stream beds.

The IHJIN river empties into e. north extension or the HAN-GANG; The IMJIN Ve.lley varie• from one to eight miles 1ft width. The upper reaches of the river is flanked by occasional st~ep hills, 300 to 1,600 feet above the valley floors. In the lower reaches there are extensive rice fields with many radiating dikes aad canals.

Vegetation coneiste primarily of eparce tree-growth, br~eh, and grass. Gentler 8lopaa ar-a terraced, with dry eropa predominating. Fl!'!_t valley floors are for the most part planted in rice.

Critical Terrain Features: The IMJIN river ie or immediate importance in the regimental eector. Although in rear ot the front line positions, it greatly effects both logistical and tactical consideration. In the middle course the IHJIN River 1e 50 to 100 yarde wide and normally more than 6 teet deep. The current is moderate, but rapide are common in several places. In the lower course the river widens to nearly i mile, is eeveral feet deep, and hae a sluggish current. High stony banks and gravel bottoms are characteristic of the upper reachee of the IMJIN River, while in the lower reache= the banks and bed are ea.nd. Th~ IMJIN River is navigable by Pmall boats for approximately 70 milea.upetream. On the left flank, Hills 241, 282, and 288 although not exceedingly highb dominate the low terrain to the eaet. At a greater depth, CHES K-SAN and TAEDUM .. SAN ridges of over 2,000 feet elevatioR control the terr~1n about them in all directions.

Obeervation and Fields of Fire: There is almost comnlete observation of the H1JIN Velley f'rom the hills south of K/t.E!:!ONG and the KYONGGI hills to the north of KAESONG; while, the reverse elopes of these hills cannot be obeerved from the valley. In the flat river valley observation within the area as well as fields of fire are good to excellent. Fields of fire in the hills further north e_re poor.

Obstacles: The IHJIN River in the rear and the XYONGGI hills to the north of KAESONG are the principal obetaclee in the area. !lumerou!l irr1gs.t1on di tchell diked above the level o't the river valley radiate from the river.

These ditches are more than ~irteen feet in width and are serioWI obstacles :ror movement parallel to the river. During the ~a1n;y eea eon or ~~hen the rice paddies are flooded, they constitute serious obstacles to mechanized movement and greatly channalize foot troops.

Route a: HSRt~ lee_d. north :from SEOUL to !C.c\.ESONG and along the SEOUL_l·IONSAN corridor. There are also numerous secondary road1 one of which parallels the I:·iJIN River on the south. Vehicular IIIOVement is relatively easy on the coastal lowlands and river valleys except during the period when the rice fields are flooded. Movement in the hill regions is easy in the valleys, but becomes more difficult in the narrow valleys and higher hills. Hany small win<llng streams a.re not bridged making crossings necessary by fercy or ford.

The immediate area has good fields of fire and observation but poor cover and concealment. Trafficability is generally good with exception of the wet season, The IHJIN River is the chief obstacle. The low hills to the west-northwest and the higherhilll to the north overlook the river valley. The area ia ravorable rorthe emnlo;yment of annor and supporting a.rms.

• (c) Hydrography: The IMJIN River is discuued under the topics of weather and terrain. Brackish water extendl up the IMJIN beyond 1-!UN SAN-NI.

{d) Sociology: Due to the proximity of the area to popula.tion points, control of the civilian population w1ll present more of a uroblem than in thoee arelu!< where there are f'el!' o1v111ane. The local popula.tion ie eupported by nuroeroue illega.l tradee. and practices a.s well af' normal occupations. A trade in narcotic• and prostitution are two of theee uractices.

The l ?th NK l·1ecrw.n1zed Division is presently believed to posse~s sufficient organic transportation to reinforce within twenty-four hours. For further reinforcement beyond the twentyfour hour limitation see units listed under 8 Reinforcementa.=

(d) P'v reports have indicated the enemy'• recellt interest in chemical and biologicai warfare. The ~lat terrain 11 favor=

able for employment of gas. (e) The enemy 1s credited with the capability or dropping

once reinforced regiment of 3, 000 men vi th his present air trans_pCir' t

capability. Logi~a~ targets of such operations would be the KIMPO airfield and the HAN River brHlgee. An e.irdrop of this na t"~&re would necessarily be coordinated with a ground attack.

(f) The enemy &ir force consists largely of detene1ve fighters. He may expand current defensive tactics at anytime to

include hit-and-run attacks on troop movemente, CPa, bridge•, supply areas and front lines. It must be assumed that the enemy baa knowl

edge of the pending operation and may endeavor to strike troop movements during this phaee.

(3) Most Probable Course of Action. Capability (e.), to de:rend on present positiona with

fifteen infantry battalions supported by approximately ten ·artillery be. t tal ions.

3. E~"FECTS OF ENEHY COURSES m' ACTION ON OUR UISSION.

The continued defense by the enemy cannot prevent the aocoillp-11sr~ent of our m1ss1on.

An attack by the enemy with fifty-four battalions aupported by s.rtillery and tanks can endanger the accomplishment of our m1aaion, particularly if such an attack were concentrated on a emall segment of the line. However, it is not considered that this atrength ia aurric1ent for a auccesaful break~through. ·

If an attack, such as uescribed above, were aubetantially rein

forced, it could prevent the accomplishment of our mission.
