The Air Curtain in the BMW Series Convertible andCoup was developed in the stream of a new high-tech wind tunnel. Its innovative technology thatreduces air resistance to great effect.

In the large wind tunnel at BMW Groups

Aerodynamic Test Centre in Munich, realityis turned on its head. It is not the car that

moves but the surroundings. A rotor with aneight metre diameter (photo, left) and up to

. megawatts of power input (around ,hp) propels , cubi c metres of air into circulation through a closed channel. In front of thetest track, the air is forced through a jet and

accelerated six-fold to up to km/h. The

road is simulated through five belts made of thinsheet steel. Four small belts drive the wheels.

At an exact and constant speed, the central metre-long belt moves underneath the car.

The result: the airflow on the undercarriageand on the wheels and wheel wells is almost

exactly the same as on the road. The road isbasically brought to the test track. It is metres

long, metres wide and metres high.

A wind palace. A % reduction in air resistancemeans, in practice, a reduction in consumption

of a good .%. From an aerodynamic point of

view, the bodywork design has been virtually

perfected although it only accounts for %of air resistance. Cooling air for the engine,

transmission and brakes accounts for %,% comes from the vehicles undercarriage

and a further % is created on the wheelsand in the wheel wells. Clearly, then, there

remains great potential for improvement andone such improvement is what we are calling

the Air Curtain. Developed at the Aerodynamic

Test Centre, this innovation celebrated itsworld premiere in the BMW Series Convertibleand Coup. The Air Curtain protects the frontwheels from the airstream. It does this by

routing air that streams in through openingsin the front apron into narrowing channels

towards the wheel wells where it emergesat high speed from narrow slits and hangs

like a curtain over the outer wheel wing. An

invisible wheel panel completely unobtrusivebut extremely effective. Thanks to the Air

Curtain, the optimisation of cooling air flow

Air Curtain. Narrow openings in the left and right edges of the frontapron direct incoming air into two enclosed channels. These lead to

the wheel wells, where the departing air passes through a very narrowopening at high speed, right next to the outer edge of the wheel wing.

The resulting air flow creates a kind of curtain alongside the front wheels,

effectively reducing turbulence around the wheels and wheel wells, helpingto reduce fuel consumption even further (not available for the i).

Auto Start/Stop function. BMW four-cylinder engines with six-speedmanual transmission automatically switch off when the vehicle is stationary,when the driver uses the clutch and takes it out of gear, for instance at traffic

lights or in a jam. As soon as the clutch is pressed again, the engine re-starts.This significantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in urban traffic.

High Precision Injection. BMW has located the injectors directlyadjacent to the spark plugs. They inject fuel at high pressure and with

extreme precision to ensure particularly efficient combustion.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.This new and innovative exhaust

gas turbocharging system makes extremely efficient use of exhaust gas

energy with the dual infl ow of a TwinScroll turbocharger ( i). Valvetronicfully variable valve control and High Precision Injection work together

to significantly reduce fuel consumption, while considerably improvingperformance over a wide rev range.

Brake Energy Regeneration. With this technology, thegenerates electricity when the driver either takes his foot

Control Display, or even have them read to you through the audio systemsspeakers. New features include RSS feeds for news and Wiki Local, which

allows you to source Wikipedia information on your local area.

USB/audio interface with extended functions. In combination withthe optional USB/audio interface and the original iPod USB cable, your

BMW is able to display the album cover for the currently played title in theControl Display. This Cover Art display adds the cover for any song and

album, for fast and convenient reference (function also available for othermusic devices). The USB/audio interface also makes it easy to update a

part of the vehicle software in your BMW via a USB stick. This providesaccess to the complete range of functions supported by new mobile phone
