CHAPTER 11 That which was f rom the f irst ,

which has come to our ear s, andwhich we have seen with our eyes,looking on i t and touching i t withour hands, about the Word of life2 (And the l ife was made clear to

us, and we have seen it and are wit-nessing to it and giving you word ofthat eternal life which was with theFather and was seen by us);

3 We give you word of all we haveseen and everything which has comet o o ur e ars , s o t ha t you may beuni ted with us; and we are uni tedwith the Father and with his Son Je-sus Christ:4 And we are writ ing these things

to you so that our joy may be madecomplete.5 This is the word which came to us

from him and which we give to you,

that God is light and in him there isnothing dark.6 If we say we are joined to him,

and are walking still in the dark, ourwords are false and our acts are un-true:7 But if we are walking in the light,

as he is in the light, we are alluni ted with one ano ther, and theb lood o f Jesus h is Son makes usclean from all sin.8

If we say that we have no sin, weare false to ourselves and there isnothing true in us.9 I f we say openly tha t we have

done wrong, he is upright and trueto his word, giving us forgiveness ofs ins and making us c lean f rom al levil.

10 If we say that we have no sin,we make him false and his word isnot in us.

CHAPTER 21 My li t t le children, I am writ ing

these things to you so that you maybe without sin. And if any man is asinner, we have a friend and helperwith the Father, Jesus Christ, the up-right one:2 He is the offer ing for our s ins ;

and not for ours only, but for all theworld.3 And by th is we may be cer ta in

that we have knowledge of him, ifwe keep his laws.4 The man who says, I have knowl-

edge of him, and does not keep hislaws, is false, and there is nothingtrue in him:5 But in every man who keeps his

word, the love of God is made com-

plete. By this we may be certain thatwe are in him:6 He who says that he is l iving in

him, will do as he did.7 My loved ones, I do not give you

a new law, but an old law which youhad f rom the f i rs t ; th is o ld law isthe word which came to your ears.8 Aga in, I g ive yo u a n ew l aw,

which is true in him and in you; forthe night is near its end and the true

light is even now shining out.9 He who s ays t ha t h e i s i n t he

light , and has hate in his heart forhis brother, is still in the dark.10 He who has love for his brother

is in the light, and there is no causeof error in him.11 But h e who h as h at e f or h is

brother is in the dark, walking in thedark with no knowledge of where heis going, unable to see because ofthe dark.12 I am wri t ing to you, my chi l -

dren, because you have forgivenessof sins through his name.13 I am writing to you, fathers, be-

cause you have knowledge of himwho was from the first. I am writingto you , young men , because youhave overcome the Evil One. I havesent a let te r to you, chi ldren, be-cause you have knowledge of theFather.14 I have sent a let ter to you, fa-

thers, because you have knowledgeof h im who was f rom the f ir st . Ihave sen t a l et te r to you , youngmen, because you are strong, and theword of God is in you, and becauseyou have overcome the Evil One.15 Have no love for the wor ld or

for the things w hich are in theworld. If any man has love for theworld, the love of the Father is notin him.16 Because everything in the world,

the desire of the flesh, the desire ofthe eyes, and the pride of life, is notof the Father but of the world.17 And the world and its desires is

coming to an end: but he who doesGods pleasure is living for ever.18 Lit tl e chi ld ren, i t i s the l as t

hour; and as you were given wordthat the Antichrist would come, sonow a number of Ant ichr ists havecome to you; and by this we are cer-tain that it is the last hour.19 They went out from us but they

were not of us; if they had been ofus they would st i l l be with us: butt he y wen t o ut f rom us s o t ha t i tmight be made clear that they werenot of us.

20 And you have the Spirit from theHoly One and you all have knowl-edge.21 I have not sent you th is le t te r

because you have no knowledge of

what is true, but because you haveknowledge, and because that whichis false has nothing in common withthat which is true.22 Who is fa lse but he who says

that Jesus is not the Chr is t? He isthe Antichrist who has no belief inthe Father or the Son.23 He who has no belief in the Son

has not the Father: he who makesclear his belief in the Son has the

Father.24 But a s for you, keep in yourhearts the things which were madeclear to you f rom the f i rs t . I f youkeep these things in your hearts youwil l be kept in the Father and theSon.25 And th is i s the hope which he

gave you, even eternal life.26 I am writing these things to you

about those whose purpose is thatyou may be turned out of the t rueway.27 As for you, the Spiri t which he

gave you i s s ti ll in you , and youhave no need of any teacher; but ashis Spirit gives you teaching aboutall things, and is true and not false,so keep your hearts in him, throughthe t each ing which he has g ivenyou.28 And now, my chi ld ren, keep

your hearts in h im; so tha t a t h isrevelation, we may have no fear orshame before him at his coming.29 If you have knowledge that he is

upright, it is clear to you that every-one who does r ighteousness is hisoffspring.

CHAPTER 31 See what great love the Father

has given us in naming us the chil-dren of God; and such we are. Forthis reason the world does not see

who we are, because i t did not seewho he was.2 My loved ones, now we are chil-

dren of God, and at present it is notclear what we are to be. We are cer-tain that at his revelation we will belike him; for we will see him as heis.3 And everyone who has this hope

in him makes himself holy, even ashe is holy.4

Everyone who is a s inner goesaga inst the l aw, for s in i s goingagainst the law.5 And you have knowledge that he

came to take away sin: and in himthere is no sin.6 Anyone who is in h im does no

sin; anyone who is a sinner has notseen him and has no knowledge ofhim.7 My l it tle chi ldren, let no man

take you out of the true way: he whodoes righteousness is upright, evenas he is upright;8 The sinner is a child of the Evil

One ; fo r the Ev i l One has been asinner from the first. And the Son ofGod was seen on ear th so tha t hemight put an end to the works of theEvil One.9 Anyone who i s a chi ld o f God

does no s in , because he s ti ll hasGods seed in him; he is not able tobe a sinner, because God is his Fa-ther.10 In this way i t is clear who are

the children of God and who are thechi ldren of the Evi l One; anyonewho does not do r ighteousness orwho has no love for his brother, is

not a child of God.11 Because this is the word which

was given to you from the first, thatwe are to have love for one another;12 Not being of the Evil One l ike

Cain, who put his brother to death.And why did he put h im to death?Because his works were evil and hisbrothers works were good.13 Do not be surprised, my broth-

ers, if the world has no love for you.14 We are conscious that we have

come out of death into life becauseof our love for the brothers. He whohas no love is still in death.15 Anyone who has hate for h is

brother i s a taker of l i fe , and youmay be certain that no taker of lifehas eternal life in him.16 In this we see what love is , be-

cause he gave his life for us; and itis r ight for us to give our l ives forthe brothers.17 But i f a man has th is wor lds

goods, and sees that his brother is inneed, and keeps his hear t shutagainst his brother, how is it possi-ble for the love of God to be in him?18 My little children, do not let our

love be in word and in tongue, butlet it be in act and in good faith.19 In th is way we may be cer ta in

that we are true, and may give ourheart comfort before him,20 When our hea rt says tha t we

have done wrong; because God isg rea te r th an ou r he ar t, a nd h asknowledge of all things.21 My loved ones, if our heart does

not say that we have done wrong, wehave no fear before him;22 And he gives us all our requests,

because we keep his laws and do thethings which a re p leas ing in h iseyes.23 And this is his law, that we have

fai th in the name of his Son JesusChris t, and love for one another,even as he said to us.24 He who keeps his laws is in God

and God is in h im. And the Spir i t

which he gave us is our witness thathe is in us.

CHAPTER 41 My loved ones, do not put your

faith in every spirit, but put them tothe test, to see if they are from God:because a g reat number o f f al sep rophet s have gone out into theworld.2 By this you may have knowledge

of the Spiri t of God: every spi ri twhich says tha t Jesus Chr is t hascome in the flesh is of God:3 And every spir i t which does not

say this is not from God: this is thespiri t of Antichr is t, of which youhave had word; and it is in the worldeven now.4 You are of God, my l i t t le chi l -

dren, and you have overcome thembecause he who is in you is greaterthan he who is in the world.5 They are of the wor ld , so the i r

t alk i s the wor ld s t alk, and theworld gives ear to them.6 We are of God: he who has the

knowledge of God gives ear to us;he who is not of God does not giveear to us. By this we may see whichis the true spir i t , and which is thespirit of error.7 My loved ones, let us have love

for one another: because love is ofGod, and everyone who has love is achild of God and has knowledge ofGod.8 He who has no love has no

knowledge of God, because God islove.9 And the love of God was made

clear to us when he sent h is onlySon into the world so that we mighthave life through him.10 And this is love, not that we had

love for God, but that he had love

for us, and sent his Son to be an of-fering for our sins.11 My loved ones, if God had such

love for us, it is right for us to havelove for one another.12 No man has ever seen God: if we

have love for one another, God is inus and his love is made complete inus:13 And h is S pi ri t whi ch h e h as

given us is the witness that we are

in him and he is in us.14 And we have seen and give wit-ness that the Father sent the Son tobe the Saviour of the world.15 Everyone who says openly that

Jesus is the Son of God, has God inhim and is in God.16 And we have seen and had faith

in the love which God has for us .God is love, and everyone who haslove is in God, and God is in him.17 In this way love is made com-

plete in us, so that we may be with-out fear on the day of judging, be-ca us e a s h e i s , s o a re we i n t hi sworld.18 There is no fear in love: t rue

love has no room for fear , becausewhere fear is , there is pain; and hewho i s n ot f re e f ro m f ea r i s n otcomplete in love.19 We have the power of loving,

because he first had love for us.20 I f a man says , I have love for

God, and has hate for his brother,his words are false: for how is theman who has no love for his brotherwhom he has seen, able to have lovefor God whom he has not seen?21 And this is the word which we

have from him, that he who has lovefor God is to have the same love forhis brother.

CHAPTER 51

Everyone who has faith that Jesusis the Christ is a child of God: andeveryone who has love for the Fa-ther has love for his child.2 In this way, we are certain that

we have love for the chi ld ren o fGod , when we have love for Godand keep his laws.3 For loving God is keeping h is

laws: and his laws are not hard.4 Anything which comes from God

is able to overcome the world: andthe power by which we have over-come the world is our faith.5 Who i s a bl e t o o ver co me t he

world but the man who has faith thatJesus is the Son of God?6 This is he who came by water and

by blood, Jesus Christ; not by wateronly but by water and by blood.7 And the Spirit is the witness, be-

cause the Spirit is true.8 There are three witnesses , the

Spirit, the water, and the blood: andall three are in agreement.9 If we take the witness of men to

be true, the witness of God isgreater: because this is the witnesswhich God has given about his Son.10 He who has fai th in the Son of

God has the witness in himself: hewho has not faith in God makes himfalse, because he has not faith in thewitness which God has given abouthis Son.11 And his witness is this, that God

has g iven us e ternal l ife, and thislife is in his Son.12 He who has the Son has the life;

he who has not the Son of God hasnot the life.

13 I have put these things in writ-ing for you who have fa i th in thename of the Son of God, so that youmay be certain that you have eternallife.14

And we are cer ta in tha t i f wemake any request to h im which isright in his eyes, he will give ear tous:15 And i f we a re cer ta in tha t he

gives ear to all our requests, we areequally certain that we will get ourrequests.16 If a man sees his brother doing a

s in which i s not bad enough fordeath, let him make a prayer to God,

and God will give life to him whosesin was not bad enough for death.There is a sin whose punishment isdeath: I do not say that he may makesuch a request then.17 All evil-doing is sin: but death

is not the punishment for every sortof sin.18 We are certain that one who is a

child of God will do no sin, but theSon of God keeps him so that he isnot touched by the Evil One.19 We are cer ta in tha t we are of

God , b ut a ll t he wor ld i s in t hepower of the Evil One.20 And we are certain that the Son

of God has come, and has given us aclear vision, so that we may see himwho is true, and we are in him whois true, in his Son Jesus Christ . Heis the true God and eternal life.21 My li tt le children, keep your-

selves from false gods.
