Safety PrecautionsAn isolation transformer should be connected in the powerline between the receiver and the AC line before any

service is performed on the receiver.

X- Radiation PrecautionsThe primary source of X-RADIATION in televisionreceiver is the picture tube. The picture tube is specially

constructed to limit X-RADIATION emission. Forcontinued X-RADIATION protection, the replacementtube must be the same type as the original including

suffix letter. Excessive high voltage may produce

potentially hazardous X-RADIATION. To avoid such

hazards, the high voltage must be maintain withinspecified limit. Refer to this service manual for specifichigh voltage limits. If high voltage exceeds specified limits, take necessary corrective action. Carefully follow the

instructions for + B1 volt power supply adjustment, and

high voltage check to maintain the high voltage within the

specified limits.

CAUTION: The Convergence and Purity adjustments have been made at the factory. Readjustment should bemade only after picture tube or deflection yoke replacement, following the steps below:

PURITY ADJUSTMENT1.Demagnetize the picture tube and receiver using an external

degaussing coil. When replacing picture tube or deflectionyoke, mount deflection yoke and purity - convergencemagnets assembly properly, see figures 1 and 4.

2.Turn Red and Blue guns off and provide only Green raster.Rotate Screen control to fully counterclockwise. Rotate Redand Blue Bias controls fully counterclockwise. Slowly rotateGreen Bias control clockwise to produce Green raster.

3. Loosen the screw holding the Deflection Yoke and removethe 3 Rubber Wedges, and slide the Deflection Yoke fullyfrontward.

4. Rotate and spread the Tabs of the two Purity Magnets tocenter the vertical green belt in the picture screen. The PurityMagnets are also adjusted to obtain vertical centering of theraster.

5.SIOWIY slide the Deflection Yoke backward until a uniformgreen screen is obtained.

6,Check the purity of the red and blue screens for uniformity, turn off other colours to check this (use bias controls).Readjust the yoke position if necessary until all screens arepure.

7.Adjust each Bias control and screen control to obtain whiteraster. Refer to Gray Scale Adjustment. If part of the picturescreen is coloured, adjust the Deflection Yoke positionforward or backward slightly.

8. Tighten the mounting screw of the Deflection Yoke. AdjustConvergence next.

CENTER CONVERGENCE ADJUSTMENT1.Use a dot crosshatch pattern signal.2. Turn Red and Blue guns on and turn off Green gun. Adjust

the angle between the Tabs of the Four Pole Magnet 1and2,and superimpose the Red and Blue vertical lines in thecenter area of the picture screen. Refer to figure 2.

3. Keeping the mutual angle of the Tabs of the Four PoleMagnet turn them together to superimpose the Blue and Redhorizontal lines in the center area of the picture screen. Referto figure 2.

4. Turn Green gun on and adjust Six Pole Magnet 3 and 4s thatthe Green line superimposed on the Red/Blue lines.

This is the same procedure used in steps 2 and 3.Refer to figure 3.

OUTER AREA CONVERGENCE ADJUSTMENTSlightly loosen the screw holding the Deflection Yoke. Adjustthe Deflection Yoke to converge the detail in the outer area (leftside and right side) of the picture screen by orbital movement ofthe front of the Yoke, then secure the Deflection Yoke inappropriate position by putting the wedges as illustrated.Tighten screw holding the Deflection Yoke.

The mode selector drives the loading motor of themechanism with its internal batteries (UM-2 X 4=6V),

using LEDS to indicate the mode (EJECT, INITIAL),

Instead of the internal batteries, an external DC 6V powersupply can be used.

11-4-3. Handling method

1) The mode changes in sequence of EJECT, INITIAL,BRAKE, STOP/REW/FF, STILL, PLAY, IDLER, REVwhen the right side ( ~ ) of the mode selector button is

pressed.2) To change the mode from REV to EJECT, press the

left side ( + ) of the mode selector button to select thedesired mode.

3) In the mid position of each mode during a shift toanother mode, the “BLANK LED lights. But the“PLAY”, “IDLER”, “REV” LEDs light between theEJECT mode and the INITIAL mode. Be sure, therefore, to check the mechanism body to see justwhat state the mechanism is in. Incidentally, if themode selector is not connected to the mechanism, the“BLANK LED lights to indicate the power is ON.

4) The SLOW position of the POWER switch makesrelatively slow motions in comparison with theNORMAL position.

Note 1: The mode selector drives the loading motor only, not affecting the head drum motor and the capstan motor. When using the mode selector with a cassette loaded, turn the capstan motor manually to remove tapeslackness, preventing tape entanglement.Note 2: If the left side ( @ ) of the mode selector(VHJ-0050) key is kept pressed with the COMPLcassettemechanism removed, it might get the EJECTposition, causing the front helical gear and the front wormgear to get disengaged. In this condition, since the fronthelical gear will not turn even if the right side ( ~ ) of themode selector key is pressed, rotate (push) the front

– 36

helical gear clockwise by hand and engage it with thefront worm gear. As there is a misalignment between themechanism main body operation mode (indicated by themode selector indicator lamps) and the front loadingmechanism operation mode, keep the right side ( 4 ) ofthe mode selector key pressed until the front helical gearand the front loading gear of the front loading mechanismget back to the initial condition (Refer to A and B in figureon page ). When the front loading mechanism returnsto the initial condition, the operation mode of the whole +mechanism gets back to normal, matching the modeshown by the mode indicator lamps (mode EJECT wouldnot be properly indicated during eject).Sometimes, engagement of the front helical gear with thefront worm gear is delayed. The mechanism main bodygets too much ahead and the front loading mechanismmode cannot be switched to the initial condition. In thatcase, press the left side ( * ) of the mode selector key, setting the mechanism main body operation mode back toEJECT (rotation of the mode cam and the MAIN CAMstops).Note 3: The mode indicator lamps show the mechanismoperation mode, but the EJECT lamp may sometimes failto indicate the actual mechanism operation mode. When setting the mechanism to the EJECT or INITIALmode for dismounting or reassembling, fine adjustment ofeach gear and cam, etc., and marking positions isrequires after the mode indicator lamp has lighted up. Dothis with the mode selector switch in the SLOW position.
