Did you know that…

Saint Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies

(Poor Clares) at San Damiano, and led it for 40

years. They all lived a simple life of poverty, and

seclusion from the world, they wore no shoes,

never ate meat, lived in a poor house, and

kept silent most of the time.

She was designated as the patron saint of

television in 1958 by Pope Pius XII, because

when she was very ill and could not attend mass

and was reportedly able to see and

hear it on the wall in her room. She is also the

patroness of eye disease, goldsmiths, and

(doing) laundry.

CONFIRMATION CELEBRATION: Bishop Ken Howell will preside at the Confirmation celebrations for 104 very excited children on Thursday evening 17th August. We have had such a wonderful response from families that we have had to offer two celebrations to manage the large numbers of children - one at 5.00pm and the other at 7.00pm. Children celebrating the sacraments in a parish are always a highlight for families and the parish community so if you are not doing anything on Thursday then please come and join in the celebrations. A choir of children from the various schools will be leading the singing and we thank Julia Bennett and Kathy Bianchi for assisting with the choir. If you received a prayer card from one of the children and would like to make contact with the family then please let Maree or Bernadette know at the Parish Office and we will make sure the family is notified. Lastly, thank you to all the parishioners who have made these families feel welcomed at the weekend Masses.

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION FOR OLDER CHILDREN: Have you recently had your child enquire about being baptised? The Ipswich Catholic Community is commencing preparation sessions for children who have expressed an interest or desire in being baptised into the Catholic faith. These sessions will be held after school or at a time that is suitable to the family. It is preferable for one parent to be a baptised Catholic. Please contact Bernadette at the Parish Office on 3281 2133 for further information or questions.

RITE OF CHRISITIAN INITATION OF ADULTS: Each year the parish receives many enquiries from adults seeking or discerning the possibility of being welcomed into the Catholic Faith through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion. This decision can be one of the many highlights of a person’s life and members of the Ipswich Catholic Community have had the pleasure of walking this journey with many candidates who have been welcomed into the faith community. If you know of someone who has asked questions, enquired or interested in the Catholic faith then invite them to attend an enquiry night which will be held on Thursday 14th September at 7.00pm in St Mary’s Parish Centre. This evening is also opened to parishioners who would like to learn a little more about the process of becoming a Catholic when you are an adult. Please phone the Parish office on 3281 2133 to register your interest.

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION: If you are looking for a gentle

way to end the week or start the weekend then come along

to Christian Meditation in St Mary’s Parish Office on Friday

mornings beginning at 7.45am

LEICHHARDT CARE & CONCERN: Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 15th August, at 9.30am in the former presbytery at Leichhardt (between the school and the old parish hall). New members are always welcome, and invited to ‘just turn up’ at this meeting.

THANK YOU FROM THE HIVE: The Hive would like to thank all the parishioners at Immaculate Heart Leichhardt and St Mary's Ipswich for your generous support of The Hive Bake Sale last weekend. We hope you enjoyed your tasty treats. Thanks to your generosity we raised over $800!!! These funds will help us greatly towards taking The Hive to The Ignite Conference and the Australian Catholic Youth Festival later this year. Thank you all so much!
