of the m o s t successful dashes in
living m e m o r y .

Snu NUS Strike ANDREW OFORI
The University of London will be
conspicuous by its absence dur
ing the NUS 'shut-down' on 4
March. The event c o m e s as the
N U S c a m p a i g n against tu i t ion fees
is reaching its c u l m i n a t i o n , w i t h
current efforts be ing c o n c e n t r a t e d
o n o p p o s i t i o n to the T e a c h i n g a n d
Higher Educat ion Bi l l , w h i c h wi l l
pave the w a y for the i n t r o d u c t i o n
of fees.
The N U S ' s h u t - d o w n ' event has
rece ived n a t i o n - w i d e b a c k i n g w i t h
130 Further and Higher Educat ion
institutes c l o s i n g d o w n for the day .
Students are be ing e n c o u r a g e d to
g o to their s tudent unions rather
than a t t e n d a c a d e m i c s e s s i o n s .
H a v i n g g a i n e d s u p p o r t f r o m the
A s s o c i a t i o n of Univers i ty Teachers
and a signif icant n u m b e r of lectur
ers, the N U S have s t ressed that no
students s h o u l d be a c a d e m i c a l l y
d isadvantaged as a result of the
strike a c t i o n .
L o n d o n s t u d e n t s h a v e
expressed the d e p t h of their fee l ing
against tui t ion fees in the past w i t h
e v e n t s s u c h as the H y d e Park
d e m o n s t r a t i o n s last N o v e m b e r
(Felix 1097 a n d 1100), but o n 4
M a r c h G o l d s m i t h s Col lege wil l be
the sole Universi ty of L o n d o n par
t ic ipant , a n d wi l l only be g iv ing par
tial s u p p o r t . The N U S are d i s a p
p o i n t e d w i t h L o n d o n ' s response ;
o n e u n i o n representat ive w a r n e d
"not s u p p o r t i n g s o m e t h i n g like this
is a b ig mistake" . A former L o n d o n
s tudent w h o is currently a m e m b e r
of the par l iamentary d iv is ion of the
N U S e m p h a s i s e d the "onus is on
the c h o i c e of the s tudent" a n d
w e n t o n to explain "this isn't a n e w
p h e n o m e n o n for this campaign" , as
L o n d o n col leges regularly s h o w a
lack of s u p p o r t at these type of
events . H e at tr ibuted this to a s ig
n i f i cant n u m b e r of c o m m u t e r s
m a k i n g u p the s tudent p o p u l a t i o n ,
c ons equent ly reduc ing the i m p o r
tance of the unions in s tudent life.
H o w e v e r , I C U p r e s i d e n t A n d y
H e e p s w a s m o r e forthright in his
r e a s o n i n g for n o t t a k i n g part ,
assert ing "It's a case of shut t ing the
s table d o o r w h e n the horse is
halfway d o w n the f ield".

The Imperial College Union
Football Club are to face a Union
Disciplinary Committee next
week, after the Fourth team
caused trouble in Bath Union last
Wednesday.
H a v i n g lost their B U S A g a m e ,
the t e a m went to the bar to d r o w n
their s o r r o w s . A c c o r d i n g t o Jo
H u m p h r e y , Assis tant Bar M a n a g e r
at Bath U n i o n , they b e h a v e d in a
"drunken, r o w d y manner" , j u m p i n g
o n tables, s ho ut i ng a n d swear ing .
W h e n asked to c a l m d o w n by the
Bar Supervisor they re fused, a n d s o
w e r e c a u t i o n e d by Sean Bentley,
the Assis tant Bar M a n a g e r o n duty
at the t i m e , w h o i n f o r m e d t h e m
that they w o u l d not be served fur
ther at the bar. The t e a m a p p e a r e d
to c a l m d o w n , but w h e n M r
Bentley 's back w a s t u r n e d , they
s h o u t e d and s w o r e at h i m . M r
Bentley th e n o b t a i n e d the help of
the Bath Sports President , Sarah
M i l n e , in o r d e r t o m a k e t h e m
leave. At this point the s tudents
b e c a m e even m o r e abusive; o n e IC
s tudent o n leaving w a s heard to
protest "What k ind of fucking union
is this?" Bath U n i o n has c o n t a c t e d
Imperial Co l lege U n i o n to inform
t h e m of t h e t r o u b l e , a n d has
a d v i s e d ICU not to let the t e a m
into its bars. M r Bent ley c o m m e n t
e d t h a t " N o respect w a s s h o w n for
the bar, the staff or the University."
This inc ident is the latest in a
line of s imilar o c c urrenc es . A n d y
H e e p s , 1CU President , d e c i d e d to
br ing the Fourth t e a m before a
U n i o n Disc ipl inary C o m m i t t e e , as
he has b e e n very lenient on previ
o u s o c c a s i o n s , a fact a c k n o w l
e d g e d by D o n a l Keene, the Football
C l u b C a p t a i n . M r H e e p s observed
"It's g e t t i n g a l i t t le t e d i o u s .
H o w e v e r , I 'm sure the Discipl inary

s e e m s u n l i k e l y that the Fourth
t e a m wi l l be invi ted back to Bath,

Fears are growing that
Waterstone's, who last year took
over f rom the Union as sole
bookshop on campus, may have
greater visions for their retail
empire. S p e a k i n g at the first meet
i n g of t h e B o o k s t o r e U s e r s
C o m m i t t e e last w e e k , R a c h e l
D i c k i n s o n , t h e m a n a g e r o f t h e
c a m p u s branch, out l ined her desire
to s tock cards a n d stat ionery in
a d d i t i o n to sc ience texts a n d a
w i d e range of f i c t ion .
Desp i te the fact that the c o n
tract for the site explici t ly states
"The sa le of o t h e r m a g a z i n e s ,
n e w s p a p e r s , stat ionery, f o o d . . . . w i l l
not be permi t ted" , M s D i c k i n s o n
expla ined that "This is s o m e t h i n g I,
personally, w o u l d really like to see
happen" . A s k e d if e x p a n s i o n plans
were c o n n e c t e d to r u m o u r s that
the c a m p u s branch w a s at present
30% under budget , she a d m i t t e d
"Yes, w e are h a v i n g p r o b l e m s ,
al though that 's not s o m e t h i n g I'd
really like to see appear in Felix".

the present s h o p fails to d o . W o r s e
stil l , the H a m m e r s m i t h s h o p has
been c l o s e d o n every o c c a s i o n on
w h i c h U n i o n staff have vis i ted the
site. W h i l s t sales of paper a n d sta
t ionery are p r o h i b i t e d at South Ken,
they are a l l o w e d at H a m m e r s m i t h .
H o w e v e r , a rapid s p o t check on
d e m o n s t r a t e d pr ices to be between
2 0 a n d 3 0 % higher than at the ICU
S h o p .
S p e a k i n g o n behal f of the
U n i o n , M r H e e p s a d d e d "The prob
lems w h i c h w e ra ised w h e n tender
ing for the b o o k s h o p are n o w start
ing to rear their heads". H o w e v e r ,
the President w a s conf ident that

W a t e r s t o n e ' s request , v i e w i n g the

WHO Covers Up Drugs? JON TROUT
World Health Organisation offi
cials in Geneva who produced a
report last December entitled
"Cannabis: A Health Perspective
and Research Agenda" have been
called into disrepute, following
allegations in New Scientist mag
azine.
The N e w Scientist article c o n
cerned the s u p p r e s s i o n of a draft
conta in ing a c o m p a r i s o n b e t w e e n
cannabis a n d the legal drugs a l c o
hol and t o b a c c o . The leaked d o c u
ment c o n c l u d e d that the a m o u n t of
cannabis s m o k e d w o r l d - w i d e not
only harms publ ic health less than
a lcohol a n d t o b a c c o , but w o u l d be
likely to cont inue to d o s o if c o n
s u m e d o n the s a m e scale as these
legal s u b s t a n c e s . N e w S c i e n t i s t
c l a i m e d that the W H O h a d " b o w e d
to pol i t ical pressure" in r e m o v i n g
the c o m p a r a t i v e analysis "at the
last minute" f o l l o w i n g intense d i s
pute b e t w e e n W H O o f f i c i a l s ,
c a n n a b i s e x p e r t s a n d "externa l
advisors" . The off icial line o n the
wi thdrawal w a s that "the reliability
and publ ic health s igni f icance of
such c o m p a r i s o n s are d o u b t f u l " .

t ions to Dr M o n t e i r o , o n e of the
authors of the cannabis report . A s
Felix w a s g o i n g to p r e s s , Dr
M o n t e i r o h a d not c o m m e n t e d . M r
C o n c a r d i d w a r n Felix, however , "to
expect n o t h i n g but the official line
f r o m G e n e v a . "
A c o p y of the b a c k g r o u n d arti
cle has been unear thed , a n d the
authors f inish the paper by stat ing :
"There are g o o d reasons for saying
that [cannabis] w o u l d be unlikely to
seriously rival the publ ic health risks
of a l c o h o l a n d t o b a c c o even if as
m a n y p e o p l e u s e d cannabis as n o w
drink a l c o h o l or s m o k e tobacco" .
This certainly gives c r e d e n c e to
N e w Scient is t ' s c la ims , but it is
unlikely that the apparent ly poli t ical
reason for its o m i s s i o n wil l be off i
cially a d m i t t e d in the near future.
No Butts for JCR Caterers TONY OFORI
S m o k i n g in the JCR a n d the adjacent area
between the JCR a n d the Senior C o m m o n R o o m
is facing a poss ib le tota l ban f o l l o w i n g a recent
m e e t i n g of the H e a l t h a n d Safety C o m m i t t e e .
At the meet ing , he ld o n 12 February, the c o m
mittee expres s ed their c o n c e r n s over the prac
ticality of c o n t i n u i n g w i t h the exis t ing arrange
ment
Currently, there is a lack of a c c o m m o d a t i o n
for those w h o w i s h to s m o k e in the JCR so this
m o v e wil l anger m a n y that feel they are a lready
in an i l l -catered for minor i ty . A poss ib le so lut ion
lies in the p r o p o s e d refurbishment of the JCR
where a proper ly vent i la ted s m o k i n g area is
p r o v i d e d . H o w e v e r this s c h e m e w h i c h w a s or ig
inally s u p p o s e d to be c o m p l e t e d in 1997, imay
be p o s t p o n e d again this year . A n o t h e r p o s s i b i l
ity under c o n s i d e r a t i on is the insta lment of an
air-recycl ing m a c h i n e in the corr idor outs ide the
JCR.
IC's smokers forced to resort to desperate
The m a i n thrust for this change s e e m s to be
att i tude of the ca ter ing staff. They disl ike the
intense smel l that e m e n a t e s f r o m the corr idor
a n d the r u b b i s h that a c c u m u l a t e s . The
C h a i r m a n of the H e a l t h a n d Safety C o m m i t t e e ,
John Foster, reiterated this say ing that the cater
ers f ind the e n v i r o n m e n t "very unpleasant" and
"feel u n c o m f o r t a b l e about enter ing the area to
carry out c leaning" . A n o t h e r reason for the
change is that the corr idor is s e e n as a poss ib le
seat ing area for the o v e r f l o w f r o m the JCR.
The C o m m i t t e e feels strongly about of the
w i t h d r a w a l of this unoff ic ia l s m o k i n g area, a n d
there are r u m o u r s of ca ter ing staff strikes if
things cont inue the w a y they are. The col lege
secretary has been c o n t a c t e d over the affair and
if the H e a l t h a n d Safety C o m m i t t e e get their
w a y the n e w ban c o u l d take effect f r o m the e n d
of this t e r m .

Dear Felix,
The other w e e k I w a s feel ing a
bit d o w n o n the w o r l d s o 1 d e c i d e d
to get away for a w e e k w i t h a m a t e
of mine at Sheff ie ld U n i a n d w e
had a little tour r o u n d the country
to visit a few mates . W e vis i ted
quite a n u m b e r of U n i o n s in the
w e e k and m o s t w e r e very g o o d -
Sheffield w a s absolute ly fantast ic .
This Friday I c a m e back to the
g o o d o l d I C U . I couldn ' t bel ieve
h o w shabby it s e e m e d c o m p a r e d
to all the other unions in the c o u n
try I'd been to . A n d to a d d insult to
injury they charge y o u to get into
the d a m n place . W h a t really t o o k
the biscuit w a s having sat d o w n in
the Chil l O u t r o o m w i t h a l o a d of
mates (where w e had a table a n d
all had seats) 1 n e e d e d to n ip
downsta irs to the toi let . G o i n g out

guy o n the d o o r that I w a s just

It's not of ten that I wri te a let
ter to Felix, mainly because I s p e n d
m o s t of m y life in the off ice as

but I 'm afraid that I can ' t let S i m o n
Baker (and others) cr i t ic isms of ICU
g o u n a n s w e r e d .
Firstly, to answer the argument
that there are t o o m a n y c o m m i t
tees in I C U . This m u s t be the first
t i m e I have ever seen anyone c o m
plain that t o o m a n y p e o p l e w e r e
tak ing an interest in running the
U n i o n ; the truth is that there is
a lways r o o m for m o r e help, a n d as
Chair of Publ icat ions Board I k n o w
that 1 w o u l d n ' t m i n d a h a n d s o m e
t i m e s . I agree that at first sight
there w o u l d s e e m to be a large
n u m b e r , but bear in m i n d that
w h e n trying to deal w i t h over 2 5 0
clubs a n d societ ies and serve the
needs of a r o u n d 10 ,000 s tudents
o n e necessari ly has s o m e c o m
plexity. O f course the C C U struc
ture d o e s c o n f u s e the m a t t e r
s o m e w h a t , but I'll c o m e back to
t h e m later.

G e r m a n society , I sympath ise that
he w a s needless ly a n d irritatingly
juggled b e t w e e n t w o c o m m i t t e e s
for m o n t h s . In the future I w o u l d
suggest that w h e n it is not obvious
w h i c h C l u b s a n d S o c i e t y
C o m m i t t e e s h o u l d take respons i
bility for a n e w club, that the mat
ter be re fer red t o the D e p u t y
President (Clubs &. Societies) or
e v e n t a k e n the I C U Execut ive
C o m m i t t e e . It is a s h a m e that nei
ther S C C nor O S C s a w fit to take
this a c t i o n .
G e t t i n g o n t o the i ssue of
C C U s , I u s e d to be of the o p i n i o n
that they w e r e a se l f -serving w o r t h
less historical a n o m a l y . H o w e v e r ,
having seen what a r e f o r m e d , for
w a r d l o o k i n g a w e l l - r u n C C U can
d o (taking I C S M S U a n d to a lesser
extent, R S M U , as shining e x a m
ples) I n o w feel that C C U s are vital
to the w e l l - b e i n g of ICU as a w h o l e ,
for the f o l l o w i n g reasons ;

the level of apathy is constant ly
b e m o a n e d , it is surely a g o o d i d e a
to give s tudents an o p p o r t u n i t y to
get involved wherever poss ib le .
Finally, what d o y o u p r o p o s e to
replace t h e m with? I agree w i t h
S i m o n that s o m e of t h e m s h o u l d
concentrate o n their essential roles
of A c a d e m i c Affairs a n d Wel fare ,
a n d waste less effort o n in- f ight ing
a n d bi tching about Felix, but the
C C U s are an integral part of IC.

Thank G o d s o m e o n e has been
brave enough to draw attention to
the rudest w o m a n at the University
in the a c c o m m o d a t i o n office. M y
misfortune was to want to live at
c l a y p o n d s , a n d the p a t r o n i s i n g
treatment that I received f r o m her
was unbelievable ! N o t only d i d I get
shouted at, but as m y English w a s
then not t o o g o o d she spoke in a
very s low sarcastic voice to m e , like
I was a ch i ld ! W h y d o e s the college
have such a person deal ing wi th vul
nerable students? There must have
been other c o m p l a i n t s over the
years and I have spoken to at least
ten others w h o have suffered in a
similar w a y H o w can y o u c o m p l a i n
w h e n if y o u d o y o u w o n ' t get any
a c c o m m o d a t i o n ? W e are intimidat
e d by her, it is totally unfair. W h e r e

This has the potent ia l t o confuse
inebriated m e d i c s a n d biologists
mighti ly in lectures after a heavy
sess ion , t h o u g h s o m e w o u l d argue
this wi l l h a p p e n irrespect ive of the
sani taryware . A l l in al l , it 's look ing
very g o o d , a n d I await m y invita
t ion to the off ic ial o p e n i n g .
For a C o l l e g e so s t e e p e d in
apathy, it is fantastic to see that
the S u m m e r Ball has got off the
g r o u n d . This is prec ise ly the sort of
event that IC n e e d s to s h o w to the
country that w e are a class act,
bo th a c a d e m i c a l l y a n d social ly . For
m y smal l part , I shall be s h a m e
lessly p lugging it here f o r m n o w to
the event , s o buy those t ickets , be
y o u staff, s tudent or idle layabout.
This S u n d a y , 1 M a r c h , t h e
Countrys ide M a r c h wil l take p lace in
H y d e Park. Press coverage of this
event has been d i v i d e d , o n left-
wing/right-wing lines, w i t h le f t -wing
papers suggest ing that it is be ing
organised by landowners a n d f a r m
ers w h o are d o i n g quite nicely a n d
are in no pos i t ion to ask for m o r e .
Other papers suggest that the p r o b
lems of rural areas are m o r e ser ious
than the t o w n i e s w o u l d realise a n d
maybe it is t i m e to take ac t ion .
A p p r o x i m a t e l y 8 0 % of the p o p
ulation live in bui l t -up areas, g iv ing a
similar m a k e - u p in the H o u s e of
C o m m o n s , w i t h the n a t i o n a l
press/TV cons is t ing a l m o s t entirely
of L o n d o n - b a s e d journalists (papers
often have N o r t h of England corre
s p o n d e n t s in the s a m e w a y that
they have a G e r m a n or U S corre
spondent . ) So perhaps it is under
standable that country folk are d is
enchanted w i t h the w a y things are
running. The m a r c h , w h i c h m a y look
similar to the rally he ld recently in
support of fox-hunt ing, c o m e s at a
t ime of change in the countrys ide .
EU m e m b e r s are p lanning to d is
m a n t l e s o m e of the C o m m o n
Agricultural Pol icy so that taxes a n d
f o o d p r i c e s c a n be l o w e r e d .
R e m e m b e r the C A P w a s d e s i g n e d
wi th the express intent ion of not
having market forces invade agricul
tural p r o d u c t i o n , w i t h the fairly rea
sonable de fence be ing that there
have been plenty of riots a n d wars
in the past a n d the EU's main pur
p o s e is to rid Europe of these p r o b
lems in perpetuity. The Governm ent
is pointedly not apply ing to the
C o m m i s s i o n for c o m p e n s a t i o n
Br i t i sh fa rmers are e n t i t l e d t o
(under E U law) d u e to the apprec ia
t ion of the p o u n d .
Other p r o b l e m s s e e m to await
o u r c o u n t r y f r i ends : the last
Conservat ive G o v e r n m e n t carefully
d e l a y e d a nasty dec i s ion o n the
and renovat ion costs before bui ld
ing on brownf ie ld sites at al l . But
the C o u n c i l for the Protect ion of
Rural England are up in arms any
way, saying that Prescott wil l not
keep his w o r d o n the issue. They
have s o m e justification - o n e of his
first a c t i o n s as E n v i r o n m e n t
M i n i s t e r w a s to authorise the bui ld
ing of 10 ,000 n e w h o m e s near
Stevenage, and then tel l ing W e s t
Sussex to increase to 5 0 , 7 0 0 the
Hamish Common
Westminster
Eye p o t e n t i a l e x p l o s i o n in h o u s i n g
requirements a n d the lack of space
to build t h e m , leaving their succes
sors the cho ice of o v e r c r o w d i n g
a n d imposs ib ly high house prices or
bui lding o n greenfie ld sites. John
Prescott , the D e p u t y Pr ime Minis ter
a n d E n v i r o n m e n t M i n i s t e r , has
d e c i d e d that 6 0 % of all n e w h o m e s
must be built o n 'b rownf ie ld ' sites -
renovated urban land. This is not
pleasant for the bui lding industry
w h o are aware that hous ing estates
wi th a nice v iew of the countrys ide
sell rather better than those wi th a
nice v i e w of other buildings, a n d
also have to pay any contaminat ion
n u m b e r of n e w h o m e s it m u s t
a c c o m m o d a t e (West Sussex is n o w
seeking a judicial review).
The other issue that affects the
countrys ide also divides it - the
issue of the 'right to r o a m ' , unfet
tered access to vast tracts of land,
irrespective of w h o it is o w n e d by.
This is o n e of the oldest issues for
Labour, wi th m e m o r i e s of struggles
against the landowners w h o also
o w n e d the factories and mines they
w o r k e d at. Labour m a d e a p r o m i s e
in its e lec t ion mani fes to that it
w o u l d introduce the right to r o a m ,
c o m p l e t e d u n f i n i s h e d b u s i n e s s
f r o m the 1949 Nat ional Parks and
A c c e s s t o the C o u n t r y s i d e A c t ,
w h i c h a Labour G o v e r n m e n t intro
d u c e d , m a k i n g the Peak District the
first Nat iona l Park and reinforcing
the laws o n footpaths . It d e c i d e d
then against the right to r o a m , leav
ing it instead to landowners t h e m
selves, w i t h the local authorities
w a t c h i n g over t h e m a n d if neces
sary enforc ing the law. M a n y peo
ple feel this has not w o r k e d , with
vast tracts of land still inaccessible
to the publ ic . H o w e v e r , it appears
that that the Country Landowners '
A s s o c i a t i o n has c o n v i n c e d D o w n i n g
Street to backtrack o n the right to
r o a m pol icy , a n d instead maintain
the voluntary access agreements ,
i m p l e m e n t e d (or not, as the case
m a y be) today . This wil l be an inter
est ing c h o i c e for D o w n i n g Street to
m a k e .
It is w o r r y i n g the Government
s e e m bent o n d i s c r e d i t i n g the
C o u n t r y s i d e Rally by arguing that it
is run by landowners and farmers,
a n d that its v i e w are not represen
tative of the countrys ide c o m m u n i
ty. That is the s tandard polit ical pre
amble to c o m p l e t e l y ignore their
d e m a n d s . Despi te the stories that
s o m e b o s s e s have f o r c e d their
e m p l o y e e s to at tend the rally (other
bosses have b a n n e d their staff f rom
attending), if they get as many peo
ple out as they p r o m i s e to, then it
will be a d e m o n s t r a t i o n of solidarity
that the G o v e r n m e n t w o u l d be wise
not to ignore.

and fry the meat until we l l b r o w n as usual .

gently for a r o u n d 10 m i n u t e s s o that it renders
its fat (i.e. the fat m e l t s a n d s e e p s out ) . D o n ' t
forget to a d d a large p i n c h of p e p p e r to s eas on
everything.
Take the meat out , dra in w e l l k e e p i n g as
m u c h fat in the pan as poss ib le a n d put into a
l o w o ven to keep it w a r m .
N o w del icate ly spr inkle the flour into the
pan and fry gent ly until it starts to turn b r o w n .
Pour in 3 A I of the beer, stir w e l l a n d have a g o o d
sniff whi le y o u bring the l iquid up to the boi l .
Put this roux to one s ide .
Finally, fry the o n i o n gent ly until it turns
translucent and slightly brownish o n the edges .

the milk over , put a f e w knobs of butter o n the
t o p a n d s l ide into the o v e n , gas mark 4/5, 180-
190°C. The grat in needs to roast for at least an

What'sEver sat in a lecture theatre, mesmerised by the singular tonality of an octogenarian orator? Ever won
dered whether somewhere in a lecture theatre in Budapest students were being similarly entertained?
Ever thought (cynically, privately or otherwise) that you could never change these things? Well then,
BEST may be something for you!
BEST (The Board of European Students of Technology) is a non-political, non-profit network of students
from 21 different European countries. It was founded in 1989 with the aim of 'promoting Europe
amongst Europeans. Local BEST Groups (LBG) keep in contact via the Web.
Summer Programme (as the courses have come to be known collectively) is just one of the events organ
ised by BEST. Under the same terms you might attend a one week Short Intensive Training (SIT) in
Helsinki on a non-technical topic such as management, marketing or presentation technique, or a one
week intensive language course in Krakow. You might also participate in a cultural exchange between
two LBGs, each undertaking to outdo the other in intricacy of local custom, and no doubt, the ability to
consume obscene quantities of fermented hops! And if that's not enough then you can always go skiing
in Tignes, mountaineering in the Alps or canoeing on the Rhine... Where's the catch? Although IChas in
the past been a part of the BEST network we have since lapsed into a state bordering dangerously on sus
pension because... well frankly... we haven't organised a single event for the past two year. There are
now a few of us who plan to resurrect BEST as an ICU Society. Naturally, as with all these things, we
need your support. Specifically, we need to make a list of at least twenty people who would be interested
and are also looking to mobilise a group of committed individuals to form our committee - a President,
Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Officer, Web Manager (very important) and an Industrial
Liaison Manager. So, if this article has whet your appetite for more, if you really want to make an impact
in the future of YOUR engineering/science education at a European level, if you want to travel and meet

f r o m thrash rock to trash lo- f i e lec-

g o o d measure . A lot of the tunes
have a ' r e c o r d e d - o n - a - f o u r - t r a c k -
i n - m y- m a te s - ga r a ge ' feel to t h e m ,
but this only serves t o m a k e the
c o m p i l a t i o n s o m e t h i n g y o u w o n ' t

Unfortunately, as a lot of the songs
are s o m e of the b a n d s ' first mater
ial, it is a little dul l s o it 's never

O n e track that s tands out mi les
above the rest, is Building by The
Unbel ievable Truth - a b a n d to
w a t c h out for. It's a sort of R E M
style b a l l a d w i t h rea l ly s t r o n g
vocals c o m i n g f r o m A n d y Yorke ,
brother of R a d i o h e a d ' s T h o r n
Y o r k e . The R a d i o h e a d influence is
evident , but the style is sufficiently
original to set t h e m apart so h o p e
fully the inevitable c o m p a r i s o n s in
the press w o n ' t d r a g t h e m d o w n .
The o ther songs are m o s t l y
credible , w i t h stuff like Blah Na Na
by Imposs ib le M u s i c Force a n d
Magdalen Sky by M a r k Gardener
m a k i n g the w h o l e t h i n g a very
pleasant l is ten. M i n d y o u , I really

Senser got rid of three out of their original line

cross over w a s fairly fresh four years ago w h e n
Senser w e r e m a k i n g all the right noises a n d

O n e th ing - the girl can s ing! Different styles
over different p r o d u c t i o n styles s h o w she is
adaptable but titles like Troubled Gir l , L o o k i n g

the usual tr ied and tes ted subject matter but for

A refreshingly original s o n g infused w i t h the

point . Another factor is the quality of his music ,
his last a l b u m Tha Doggfather w a s the worst
thing to c o m e out of Death R o w , the boy seri
ously needs to h o o k u p w i t h Dr Dre a n d start
bringin' their skillz together to create the quality
that w e s a w o n The Chronic and the classic
Doggstyle. Saying all that, rumour has it that
S n o o p has already s igned a n e w deal wi th anoth
er record label a n d has already started w o r k i n g
w i t h Dre . The fact that he's s igned to a six a lbum
deal at Death R o w doesn ' t s e e m to matter , keep
an eye o n this s i tuation it c o u l d all get quite

O n an a lbum front, there really ain't nothing
w o r t h chat t ing about . The Q u e e n Pen has been
the best so far a n d that 's rev iewed here. Besides
that '98 has been l o w o n real quality, s o m e stuff
has c o m e thru ' o n i m p o r t but nothing really blew
up. The m u c h h y p e d Jagged Edge a lbum is said
to not have l ived up to the hype, the tune The
Way That You Talk m a d e expecta t ions real high,
but the a l b u m just c o u l d n ' t live up to it. The Ride
soundtrack is the only th ing to have caused any
d a m a g e o n the scene , but even that wasn ' t out
s tanding, the lack of any real c o m p e t i t i o n proba
bly gave it such hype . L o o k i n g to the future there
is s o m e smart stuff to c o m e , the pick is probably
the Faith Evans joint f r o m the Bad Boy family,
w h i c h has already got hype , the n e w Aretha
Franklin a l b u m (first single already out and
w i c k e d , m o r e next week) a n d the o n e I 'm look
ing forward to m o s t the Tony Rich a l b u m . If the
n e w Rich a l b u m is anything like the last then
we ' re in for a treat. Gangstarr, 'nuff sa id .

This is a h y p n o t i c b lend of d e e p house and
e lectro styles reminiscent of Orbi ta l , but under
the s m o o t h c o m p u t e r p r o g r a m m i n g and b o u n
cy bass- l ine there is qui te a hard track h id ing
away . This is different to w h a t I have been hear
ing recently, it has an early hardcore ('90-'92)
feel to it but w i t h n e w t e c h n o l o g y m a k i n g for a
pleasant break f r o m the n o r m . This track has
strength in d e p t h , a n d wi l l m a k e a w e l c o m e

A n y o n e c o n n e c t e d w i t h the L o n d o n d a n c e
scene wil l tell y o u that t e c h n o is currently g o i n g
through a b a d p a t c h . S o m e might e v e n say that
it is dying , s lowly a n d painful ly . S o m e s o - c a l l e d
" u n d e r g r o u n d " DJs w h o have b e c o m e h o u s e
ho ld n a m e s a p p e a r to have lost t o u c h w i t h the
scene that nurtured a n d ra ised t h e m . The w h o l e
th ing has b e c o m e t o o c o m m e r c i a l , m a n y argue.
W i t h p r o m o t o r s charg ing m o r e a n d m o r e to fill
their nights w i t h DJs w h o charge extort ionate
b o o k i n g fees, a n d c o m p e t i t i o n f r o m o t h e r
hybrids of m u s i c s u c h as d r u m ' n ' b a s s , 9 7 w a s a
terrible year for t e c h n o .
There is a g r o w i n g v o i c e h o w e v e r , that is
p r o c l a i m i n g that t e c h n o d o e s n ' t have to d i e .
A l t h o u g h the i n n o c e n c e of the s u m m e r of love
n o w belongs to an o lder g e n e r a t i o n a n d the
' t echno-pur is t ' c a n n o longer be ca tered for,
these p e o p l e c l a i m to have s o m e va l id reasons
for the survival of u n d e r g r o u n d d a n c e m u s i c .
O n e of the strongest reasons is C r a i g T h o m a s
and his c lub Analog City.
Despi te be ing involved in e lec t ronic m u s i c
for m a n y years , C r a i g is o n e of a n e w breed of
DJs. H e not only spins internat ional ly o n a regu
lar basis, but he has learnt the ins a n d outs of
the music industry. H i s a c h i e v e m e n t s inc lude
m us ic p r o d u c t i o n a n d the very succes fu l Analog
City nights. D u r i n g the m i d 1990s this w a s a
club that i n t r o d u c e d the s o u n d s of t e c h n o to a
large a u d i e n c e . The best A m e r i c a n a n d
European DJs c o u l d be f o u n d playing o n the
s a m e l ine-up as s o m e excel lent h o m e - g r o w n
talent.
The best DJs meant the best m u s i c of the
genre, a n d a lso an a m a z i n g array of turntable
techniques , t r a n s f o r m i ng a pair of d e c k s into a
musica l ins trument . This all t i e d in w i t h Craig 's
p h i l o s o p h y that t e c h n o m u s i c is m o r e than just
c o m p u t e r i s e d grunts a n d farts, that the w o r d s
electronic a n d funky c a n be u s e d as adject ives in
the s a m e breath!
Starting off as a m u s i c nut, C r a i g d i s c o v e r e d
p r o m o t i o n as a vehic le t o further his o w n DJing
career, rather than as a m e a n s in itself. After a
few years involvement in the h o u s e scene ,
Analog City w a s s tarted in 1994. L o n d o n ' s c lub
land is a notor ious ly fickle a n d c o m p e t i t i v e ter
ritory, so it is quite an a c h i e v e m e n t for a c lub t o
be running for so long . It is a lso a tes tament to
Craig 's m us ic a l b a c k g r o u n d . C lubs m a y wel l rely
o n business sense , but if y o u c a n f ind the bal
ance b e t w e e n profit a n d p u t t i n g o n a g o o d
s h o w (ie c h o o s i n g the right DJs, u n d e r s t a n d i n g
y o u r c r o w d , m u s i c select ion) for y o u r c u s t o m e r s
then y o u ' r e o n t o a w i n n e r ! Bes ides its L o n d o n
res idency, Analog City has t o u r e d the U K exten
sively a n d even o p e n e d its d o o r s a b r o a d . C r a i g
cites a recent tour of C r o a t i a as a particularly ful
filling exper ience . "It's a m a z i n g h o w a w a r - t o r n
country c a n party. It d o e s n ' t matter what the
fuck's g o i n g o n a r o u n d y o u . I p l a y e d in a b l o w n -
out c i n e m a . It w a s the best exper ience I've ever
h a d . "
Next Saturday sees Analog City in L o n d o n
once again . The night p r o v e s to be unique a n d
special in m a n y respects , but I'll leave it to C r a i g
to explain y o u his c o n c e p t s in his o w n w o r d s .
" W e ' r e g o i n g for a c o m p l e t e l y different
a p p r o a c h w i t h this . Basically the nights w e put
o n in the past w e r e o n quite a large scale and
the prices to get in w e r e also high (ten to f ifteen
p o u n d s ) . W e ' r e us ing the Analog City n a m e and
still g o i n g for a large c r o w d a n d stuff, but w e ' r e
t ry ing to keep the prices d o w n .
" W i t h this event w e ' r e of fer ing a quali ty
night where everybody can pay five p o u n d s . I
think that if w e can d o that a n d still put o n big
u n d e r g r o u n d L o n d o n DJs , w i t h about fifteen
p lay ing at each night (in three rooms) then it wi l l
be a n e w w a y of a p p r o a c h i n g things. A l s o the
c u s t o m e r s w o n ' t feel r i p p e d off that they 're
p a y i n g so m u c h m o n e y , as they are d o i n g in so
m a n y L o n d o n clubs at the m o m e n t .
"1 d o n ' t think y o u s h o u l d be charging fifteen
p o u n d s to get into these b l o o d y places . If the
m u s i c is meant to be u n d e r g r o u n d , then w h y are
y o u pay ing c o m p l e t e l y as t ronomica l prices? I 'm
g o i n g for an a p p r o a c h where y o u d o n ' t have to
charge that m u c h o n the d o o r but y o u are get
t ing quali ty DJs w h o are up- there in the t e c h n o
s c e n e . "
That 's right! This is a Saturday night club in
L o n d o n w i t h fifteen of the best t e c h n o Djs that
our city has to offer in three r o o m s a n d a crack
ing s o u n d s y s t e m for just five p o u n d s . C l i c h e d
as it m a y s o u n d , C r a i g feels that the w e l l - b e i n g
a n d sat is fact ion of the c u s t o m e r s h o u l d c o m e
before m e g a six-f igure prof i ts . H e is also s h o w
i n g us that s p e n d i n g t h o u s a n d s o n c o m m e r c i a l
ly k n o w n DJs c a n be a w a s t e of m o n e y . O n e
th ing w e d o n ' t s e e m to realise is that t echno
conta ins strength in d e p t h . There are m a n y s p i n
ners out there w h o c a n h o l d a c r o w d , fill a f loor
a n d keep a night g o i n g as w e l l as any " n a m e " .
They s h o u l d a l so be g iven a c h a n c e , a n d the
respect w i t h i n the d a n c e c o m m u n i t y that Analog
City c o m m a n d s is the perfect advert i sment for
p e o p l e to not ice t h e m .
The a p p r o a c h to the structure and running
of the night is a lso be ing e x p e r i m e n t e d w i t h by
C r a i g . Rather than having o n e DJ t o play a l o n g
set, the w a r m - u p wi l l be t w o hours a n d each guy
af terwards wil l be o n for an hour . H e c la ims that
this wil l pressurise all the DJs to " p r o d u c e the
g o o d s " quickly a n d w i t h i n a set t ime l imit . W i t h
m a n y different DJs p lay ing s o c lose ly together,
the w h o l e night looks like k e e p i n g a var ied and
fresh s o u n d to it. This wi l l be anything but bor
i n g b o o m b o o m t e c h n o ! "
S o w h o are these DJs w h o wil l be strutt ing
their stuff at Analog City! O n e of the highlights
wil l be James Ruskin , founder of the popular
Blueprint label , a n d c o - r e s i d e n t at Circula t ion in
B r i x t o n w i t h A n d y W e a t h e r a l l . H i s s tyle is
d e s c r i b e d as Jeff M i l l s - e s q u e but w i t h his o w n
persona l twist a d d e d . Charl ie Hal l has been
i n s t r u m e n t a l in the s c e n e for y e a r s n o w .
Formerly of the Drum Club Collective (a musica l
g r o u p a n d a legendary club) , Charl ie plays a var
ied se lec t ion but is k n o w n to be into his hard
C h i c a g o house . Terry M i t c h e l l is d e s c r i b e d by
C r a i g as "one of the best DJs I k n o w " . H i s style
is raw a n d in yer face, w i t h scra tch ing a n d cut
t ing u s e d a longs ide the t e c h n o player 's trusty
m i x i n g sk i l l s . Final ly w e c o m e t o R i c h a r d
S u m m e r h a y e s . H e w o r k s in C o v e n t G a r d e n ' s
Eukatech Rec ords a n d is o n e of the best but
underrs ted spinners currently in the scene .

"I d o n ' t get nervous , " he c o n f i
dent ly assures , 'a l though I d o n ' t
w a n t to m a k e a m e s s . " It's an att i
t u d e y o u n e e d if y o u want to suc
c e e d , especia l ly w h e n y o u ' r e play
ing in front of a knowledgeable fo l
l o w i n g . " Y e a h , the L i m e h a u s
[Bedford] is really g o o d because
it's s u c h a genuine c r o w d . " The
best g i g s o far? " W e d i d a g i g in
N o r t h L o n d o n , at a huge S&JV1
party. W e w e r e us ing a 12k rig
that 's as p o w e r f u l as the o n e at the
M i n i s t r y , in a r o o m half the s ize .
E v e r y o n e w a s to ta l ly i n t o t h e

like four h o u r s . "

either. W o r k i n g under the n a m e of
'The Dirty S t o p - o u t s ' w i t h partner
and manager Lee Peterson , he 's
d o n e quite a bit of s t u d i o w o r k .

fighting for their f r e e d o m at a t i m e
w h e n the majority o f blacks in the
country w e r e slaves.
The Afr icans are s u p p o r t e d by
a b o l i t i o n i s t s i n c l u d i n g T h e o d o r e
Joadson (Freeman) a n d a y o u n g
real estate at torney Roger B a l d w i n
(McConaughey) w h o initially l ikens
his clients to l ivestock. H o w e v e r ,
the obstac le to justice is not the
judge or jury, w h o s e e m to
sympathise w i t h the Afr i cans , but
the pro-s lavery Pres ident M a r t i n
V a n B u r e n ( H a w t h o r n e ) w h o s e
main interest lies in s e c u r i n g a

The greatest French f i lm of the 70 's , c la ims the
press release of La Maman et la Putain. I 'm not
sure what that says about the c o m p e t i t i o n , but
the f i lm w a s also richly r e w a r d e d at C a n n e s at the
t i m e . This r e - i s s u e b o a s t s " c o r r e c t e d " subt i t l es ,
a l though this reviewer f o u n d t h e m rather A m e r i c a n -
biased.
But this is a trif l ing c o m p l a i n t : the m a i n p r o b l e m
wi th the f i lm is its length of over 3 hrs. In that length
of t ime o n e c o u l d quite easily g o to Paris a n d visit a

fair p r o p o r t i o n of the streets w h e r e the f i lm is set.
Initially at least, the f i lm is entertaining e n o u g h ;
Parisian cafe society a n d a bunch of hippies are fertile
territory a n d the script is wi t ty a n d l ight-hearted.
Unfortunately, the pretent ious att i tude that starts off
be ing r idiculed b e c o m e s the f o u n d a t i o n for the rest of
the story. The s i tuat ion b e c o m e s increasingly incredi
ble until it reaches a lmost farcical p r o p o r t i o n s .
It is tastefully shot in black and whi te a l though the
deafen ing background noises a n d frankly m e d i o c r e
delivery give the overall i m p r e s s i o n of a lack of p r o
f e s s i o n a l l y . Its ult imate d o w n f a l l , however , is that
g iven as l o n g as 4 hours , it still cannot dea l w i t h all of

encouters , takeovers and tangled

read by w o m e n o n l o n g journeys

At first y o u feel a little bit
e m b a r r a s s e d . The s c e n e is
set in Dr F e l d m a n ' s of f ice ,
and w i t h i n the conf ines of this t iny
audi tor ium it is a l m o s t as if y o u are
sat in o n what s h o u l d be a private
consul ta t ion .
A n i t a Parry really excels in her
role as S t e p h a n i e A b r a h a m s , a
y o u n g w o m a n in her 30s that has
been c o n f i n e d to a whee lcha i r by
M u l t i p l e Sc lerosis . She is p u s h e d by
her husband to seek he lp t h r o u g h
the w e l l - k n o w n Dr F e l d m a n (Peter
Ellis).
S tephanie starts the sess ions
wi th a casual at t i tude; she o b v i o u s
ly d o e s n ' t believe that the treat
ment is necessary as she has a
s t r o n g character a n d a p o s i t i v e
spiri t . She has d i s c u s s e d the conse
q u e n c e s of M u l t i p l e Sclerosis w i t h
family a n d friends a n d has c o m e up
w i t h several plans of ac t ion for the
c o m i n g years . Dr F e l d m a n only
serves to irritate her, a n d his d e m
a n d i n g ques t ions merely spark off
an angry response . S tephanie was
an e x t r e m e l y t a l e n t e d v io l in i s t
before this d isease d e s t r o y e d her
ability a n d , seemingly , her p u r p o s e .
Dr F e l d m a n ' s o w n love of the viol in
is ev ident a n d he appears to the
a u d i e n c e to share s o m e of
S tephanie ' s pa in . H o w e v e r , she is
bl ind to this a n d sees his ques t ions
as a s ign of jealousy or i n c o m p e
tence . She feels that Dr Fe ldman
d o e s not a p p r e c i a t e her intel l i
g e n c e and she plays spi teful g a m e s
to try to a v o i d a confronta t ion wi th
her fee l ings . A s t h e s e s s i o n s
progress , she appears even m o r e
ch i ld- l ike . Dr F e l d m a n , however ,
cont inues to probe into her rela
t ionships w i t h her parents a n d w o r
ried h u s b a n d . The hard shell that
S tephanie has built a r o u n d herself
begins to w e a k e n a n d she finally
unleashes the e m o t i o n that she
w o u l d have previously c o m m u n i
ca ted through her v i o l i n .
This d r a m a is p r o f o u n d l y
i n t e n s e . There are n o s c e n e r y
changes , no fancy c o s t u m e s a n d
certainly no s inging or d a n c i n g .
The subject has obvious ly been
w e l l - s t u d i e d by both the director ,
J aneena S i m s a n d t h e a c t o r s .
A l t h o u g h Peter Ellis plays his role a
little hard d u r i n g the first act, the
play still reviews the s tereotypes
a s s o c i a t e d w i t h Freudian psychiatry
a n d leaves y o u w i t h a m u c h m o r e
h u m a n e i m p r e s s i o n of the profes
s i o n .
Extra merit has to g o to A n i t a
w h o ta lks a l m o s t n o n - s t o p
throughout the t w o hour l o n g play.
O n c e y o u have entered the story
y o u really d o get i n v o l v e d . W h e n
she falls out of her wheelchair , in
o n e of the m o r e dramat ic scenes ,
y o u inst inctively j u m p up to help
her before real is ing that y o u ' r e in a
theatre. Y o u are left w i t h a s t rong
feel ing of re f lec t ion . . . not bad for a
h u s b a n d a n d wife d u o w h o are best
k n o w n for p lay ing in "The B i l l " .

to d o famil ies , T i m a n d Jane, as
they both graduate a n d have to say
farewell . They insist on k e e p i n g in
t o u c h a n d arrange to m e e t the fo l
l o w i n g week , by w h i c h t i m e they
d i scover that both of their famil ies
have d i f fe rent i d e a s a b o u t the
paths through life they s h o u l d take:
T i m to get a job w i t h o n e of his
uncles , Jane to marry. It is here that
they m e e t a t r a m p w h o pays t h e m
to look after his p iano for a m o n t h
- a p iano that forces everyone w h o
hears it to relax, dance a n d enjoy
themselves . N e e d l e s s to say this
leads t h e m o n a vast adventure of
s e c r e c y , p o l i t i c a l s c a n d a l s a n d
quests for m i s s i n g m us i c a l instru
ments . . . wel l . . . a p i a n o .
The large cast e q u i p themse lves
extremely wel l through the large
c h o r u s p i e c e s w i t h e n t e r t a i n i n g
choreography, a n d there are s o m e
w o n d e r f u l s o l o s by the l e a d s .
W o r k i n g w i t h a particularly quirky
script they manage to adapt the
h u m o u r in such a w a y as to prov ide
m o m e n t s of bizarre a m u s e m e n t
and craf ted wit .
Unfortunately I w a s not able to
see the s h o w in its full g lory of d a z
z l i n g c o s t u m e s a n d bright lights,
but this certainly d i d not prevent
the cast f r o m visibly enjoying t h e m
selves in a sp i r i ted p e r f o r m a n c e . So
in these last f e w days as they are
busy pa int ing set, r igging lights and
trying to keep c a l m , maybe y o u
s h o u l d be t h i n k i n g about g iv ing
y o u r s u p p o r t to these enthusiast ic
per formers .

The Oval Theatre
We read the press release
for this play after w e had
been p e r s u a d e d by Julia
to see it. O u r hearts sank. " T w o
teenage boys , t h r o w n together by
their parents marriage, d e v e l o p a
gay r e l a t i o n s h i p . " O h n o , three
hours of d o o m .
Fortunately this wasn't t rue . In
the o p e n i n g scene the a u d i e n c e is
in t roduced to the four family m e m
bers, D i a n a , L a w r e n c e , A l e i s t e r ,
and Eddie , a n d the Sun a n d M o o n ,
w h o look d o w n o n the p r o c e e d i n g s
f r o m a ra ised m o b i l e p l a t f o r m o n
the s tage . A s t h e r e l a t i o n s h i p
between the t w o boys , Ale is ter a n d
Eddie unfolds a n d d e e p e n s , s o that
be tween h u s b a n d a n d wife is s e e n
to d i m i n i s h , w i t h m o r e than a little
he lp f r o m the m o o n , w h o appears
intent o n " h e l p i n g " the proceedings
o n ear th . Tens ions b e t w e e n the
family m e m b e r s , in particular the
t w o boys are, in the beginning,
m a d e strikingly clear, but as the
play progresses these feelings are
r e p l a c e d by n e w a n i m o s i t y
b e t w e e n the gay lovers a n d Diana ,
w h o makes no secret of her d i sap
proval of the s i tuat ion.
The Sun a n d M o o n are a lways
present , w a t c h i n g the family as
they live their l ives. The Sun , repre
s e n t i n g ' G o o d ' is content to just
w a t c h a n d let t h o s e o n ear th
resolve their o w n p r o b l e m s , but the
M o o n , portraying the 'Bad' has a
m i s c h e v i o u s nature and b o r e d w i t h
just orbi t ing the earth, d e c i d e s to
g o d o w n a n d 'help' the family, w i t h
disastrous c o n s e q u e n c e s .
The set w a s extremely s i m p l e
and unusual , cons i s t ing of five plat
forms of di f ferent heights , o n
w h e e l s . These d o u b l e d as beds ,
tables a n d the orbits of the Sun a n d
M o o n , be ing m o v e d a r o u n d the
stage as their uses c h a n g e d . This
w a s a little p u z z l i n g at first , but
actually w o r k e d very w e l l . The light
ing also a d d e d a subtle t o u c h , w i t h
the Sun's y e l l o w light g u a r d i n g the
marr ied c o u p l e whi le the M o o n ' s

throughout Europe , f r o m Istanbul
to Isl ington. They refrain, however ,

From the author of Raising Demons, Caspar von Wrede, comes another dark tale from the edge.,
H e can see the sky a n d it is the m o s t beautiful
thing he has ever seen, a vast d o m e of infinite
blue. H e can see the sun . It has gradually, imper
ceptibly, crept across the heaven. In the begin
ning he h a d to strain his eyes to the left as far as
they w o u l d g o to see it a n d n o w he w a s begin
ning to have to strain t h e m to the right. They
ache f r o m the constant light but that d o e s n ' t
bother h i m . The sun is still w a r m o n his face,
even though it must be ge t t ing late. H e can' t
remember w h e n it last shone but he imagines it
was a very long t ime ago ; m a y b e he never
not iced it.
S o m e c louds f o r m e d earlier o n in the direc
tion of where his feet must be. L o n g , thin tenu
ous c louds that a p p e a r e d out of the air to drift
peacefully away b e y o n d w h e r e he c o u l d see
t h e m . S o m e t i m e s a b i l low of s m o k e wil l pass
over h i m a n d his w o r l d wil l briefly be c o l d w i t h
s h a d o w . The smel l of cordi te wil l s t ing his nose
and s o m e t i m e s c lods of m u d wil l patter a round
h i m . thrown up by the e x p l o s i o n . But then the
s m o k e passes and again the del ic ious sunlight
caresses h i m .
H e c a n hear every shell as it shrieks earth
wards and each t ime he w o n d e r s again whether
one of t h e m wil l e n d its brief, violent flight
through the air o n h i m . But none of t h e m d o .
S o m e fall so far away that he c a n barely feel the
m u d around h i m shiver as they detonate . O t h e r s
hit the g r o u n d only tens of feet away, tearing
d e e p w o u n d s into the soi l a n d s h o w e r i n g h i m
with the fragments . Endlessly they fall f r o m the
blue sky, bear ing their loads of des t ruc t ion . But
never o n h i m , not yet. H e ' s g l a d that they d o n ' t .
H e is in n o pain . H e c a n w a t c h the sky a n d the
sun in its t imeless orbit ; m a y b e he wi l l even see
it set.
H e must be los ing b l o o d . H e cannot m o v e
anything apart f r o m his eyes . H e cannot feel his
legs. A n d his m e m o r y is g o n e . H i s m i n d is blank,
w i p e d ; he d o e s not k n o w his n a m e or what has
h a p p e n e d to h i m . H e just k n o w s that he is lying
here in the m u d , b e t w e e n bodies a n d craters,
and long coi ls of barbed w i r e . W a i t i n g .
H e is l iving in the present . His past is g o n e ,
as is his future. There is just the t imeless present,
and he can feel that it is infinite.
S o m e o n e w a s c lose to h i m , very c lose . H e
could hear their breathing, long a n d s l o w , as if
they were as leep. H e w o u l d have been able to
touch t h e m if he c o u l d have m o v e d his a r m . The
breathing w a s wi th h i m for a l o n g t i m e , very reg
ular, s o m e h o w int imate . H e l is tened to it and
breathed w i t h t h e m . But then the breathing had
s t o p p e d , wi thout warn ing , f r o m one breath to
the next a n d he w a s a lone. Further away s o m e
one had been saying a n a m e . Franceses, over
and over a n d over again. A n o r m a l vo ice . A s if
they were m e n t i o n i n g the n a m e in conversat ion ,
again a n d again, no change in the tone or the
s p e e d , like a r e c o r d needle s tuck in its groove .
But they t o o had s t o p p e d suddenly . A shell
probably got t h e m . If he c o u l d speak w o u l d he
be saying s o m e o n e ' s n a m e? H e might have a
wife , chi ldren even, but he can't r e m e m be r . H e
doesn ' t m i n d , it w o u l d n ' t change anything n o w .
H e feels like he is part of the m u d already.
Gradually it has been o o z i n g into his tunic , c o l d
and alien o n his skin . But n o w he cannot feel it
a n y m o r e , m a y b e his b o d y t e m p e r a t u r e has
w a r m e d it, or maybe he is t o o n u m b to feel it.
This m u d will swal low h i m and maybe he will
never be recovered. There are so m a n y others
out here, each once a person, wi th a face that
had s m i l e d a n d cursed and cr ied, w h o had
breathed and felt pa in . Each had been l o v e d .
Each w i t h a story to tell , but not a nym o re . H e is
a lmost like t h e m ; he has forgotten his story.
Strangely he d o e s have o n e last m e m o r y
t h o u g h , o n e lone reco l lec t ion a m o n g s t the
empt iness in his m i n d . It is the m e m o r y of a
r o o m .
The r o o m is smal l , rectangular, and contains
only a sink, a bed , and a c u p b o a r d . The walls are
m a d e of s m o o t h w o o d , pa inted light ye l low, and
there is a d o o r o p p o s i t e the b e d . Another wal l
has the sink, of whi te porcela in , a t tached to it.
There is a l a m p hanging f rom the cei l ing, wi th an
o p a q u e whi te shade. It has a wick that glistens
wi th oil a n d a long fluted c h i m n e y of glass. But
better than this the r o o m has a w i n d o w . A n d
through this w i n d o w he can see a field of long
grass, a n d b e y o n d it a flat body of water that
stretches a lmost to the hor izon . O n the hor izon
are dark rolling hills and above t h e m , the sky,
dark blue and filled with tower ing stacks of whi te
c l o u d . H e d o e s not k n o w what is b e y o n d the
d o o r . W h e n he tries to o p e n it there is only that
empt iness that has s w a l l o w e d the rest of his
m e m o r i e s .
This r o o m must have meant s o m e t h i n g to
h i m , for its m e m o r y to survive whatever it was
that left h i m here b leeding into the m u d . O r
maybe it was just luck that he has one meaning
less last recol lect ion whilst everything else was
purged . W h a t h a p p e n e d in this r o o m ? H e wil l
never k n o w , but he can savour its m e m o r y .
Suddenly he can hear shout ing . The gunfire
s e e m s to have increased. H e can hear the whine
of bullets as they cut the air overhead , briefly
intruding into his w o r l d . A machine g u n is firing
s o m e w h e r e in quick bursts a n d its explosive
chatter is m a k i n g u n r e m e m b e r e d fears stir in his
m i n d . There is a machine g u n nest c lose to h i m .
W a s that what they were trying to take out?
There are screams and m o r e shout ing. A n d s u d
denly s o m e t h i n g flies through the air, t h r o w n by
an u n s e e n h a n d , a n d lands b e s i d e h i m .
Adrenal ine erupts into his b l o o d . Even though he
saw it for only a fraction of a s e c o n d , he knows
it is a h a n d grenade.
Damn, Damn, Damn, why does the end
have to be like this? H e tries futilely to m o v e , to
crawl away. But his muscles are not responding,
they are betraying h i m . H e doesn ' t want to die
so s o o n . It is far t o o early. H e s h o u l d have been
a l l o w e d m o r e t ime than this. H e s tops trying to
m o v e , a n d c loses his eyes. Tears are s t reaming
out f r o m under his eyel ids .
H e forces himself to breathe s lowly, to try to
order the thoughts in his m i n d before it is per
manent ly ext inguished. T ime s lows d o w n so that
its pass ing is barely percept ible . M a y b e his m i n d
knows it is about to be v a p o r i s e d , he thinks,
maybe it is s l o w i n g d o w n his percept ion of t ime
so that he can have a few m o r e m o m e n t s . Any
second now...any second. H i s w h o l e body is
shaking. This anticipation is killing me, is the only
thought in his m i n d . H e w o u l d have laughed
insanely had he been able to d o so .
The m o m e n t s pass , a n d he is still alive. It's
a dud, it's a bloody dud. For m a n y minutes he
lies wi th his eyes c l o s e d , maybe even for as long
as half an hour. H e cannot think but cont inues to
cry silently.
Then there is a n e w sensat ion, w a r m t h
around his breast, for the first t ime an ache. I'm
bleeding, I must have opened a wound. H e
realises that this t ime it really is the e n d . H e
feverishly tries to think of his past, s o m e o n e he
knew, anything, but it is useless. There is noth
ing. S o u n d s are b e c o m i n g m o r e distant, the sky
darker, but he realises that the darkness is only
in his m i n d . H e is dy ing .
H e re-enters the r o o m , searching for a
m e m o r y that he might have m i s s e d but there is
nothing n e w . H e looks through the w i n d o w
scanning the glor ious vista , but he 's seen it all
before. H e turns r o u n d a n d s u d d e n ly there is a
cot in the m i d d l e of the r o o m , a s imple w o o d e n
cot , painted whi te . It is o c c u p i e d . Ever so s lowly
he bends over a n d delicately m o v e s a blanket so
that he can see into the ch i ld ' s face. W i t h an
o v e r w h e l m i n g certainty he s u d d e n ly remembers
that he is a father, a n d that this is the chi ld
w h o m he never saw, w h o w a s born after he
began his service at the front. H e is transfixed by
its beauty, its innocence , its peacefulness , but he
dares not t o u c h it in case he wakes it. Very s low
ly he leans forward until his face is a lmost t o u c h
ing the ch i ld ' s curls. H e can smel l it 's freshly
w a s h e d skin . Remember me, he whispers softly
into its ear. Then he straightens u p , o p e n s the
d o o r and wi thout l o o k i n g back s teps into the
y a w n i n g v o i d .

ACCESS FUNDS SPRING TERM 1998
Application forms for assistance from the Access Fund
are now available from the College's Student Finance
Office, Room 334 of the Sherfield Building.
Any full-time, home student of the College experiencing
serious financial hardship is invited to collect an
application which has to be returned to the above office
by 27 March. Applications will be considered from
those who received funds earlier this session, but
priority will be given to those seeking help for the first
time.
Undergraduate students should note that applications can
only be accepted from those who have taken out a
student loan for the current session.
The funds are limited so priority will be given to the
following categories of student:
(1) Those paying their own tuition fees and
(2) Those with additional expenditure over and above
standard student costs. For example, extra medical
or childcare expenditure.
Please ensure that you collect and return your forms in
good time as it is not possible to accept late
applications.

g a m e , he gave everything to 'his'

of the ICU t e a m . H o w e v e r his
worst c r ime w a s in the last minute
w h e n Bath s c o r e d their winner . A

ed a y a r d out of play. Everyone
s t o p p e d , e v e n the B a t h str iker
went to ca tch the ball , but the ref
w a v e d play o n . The striker dr i f ted

she l l - shocked IC goa lkeeper . O u r
protests w e r e w a v e d a w a y a n d

manner rips the heart out of any

ICU Snooker Club in
Massive Pot Shock Last w e e k e n d saw the annual B U S A
s n o o k e r t o u r n a m e n t kick off in
Southampton and Imperial college
were there in force. The 'B ' t e a m
event p r o d u c e d Imperial's best ever
result, c o m i n g h o m e wi th six bronze
medals : one in the individual and
five in the t e a m compet i t ion . The
t e a m s o a r e d through the g r o u p
stages c o m i n g t o p of both and m o v
ing comfortably into the semi-f inal ,
meet ing up against Warwick . The ini
tial stages looked promis ing thanks
to s o m e stunning snooker, especial
ly by Ketal w h o gave Imperial an
early advantage m o v i n g to 5-3 with
t w o to play. Warwick bucked the
earlier trend and c a m e back to five
all to force a tiebreak. Ketal was
nominated to play a single frame.
Despite a Stirling effort w e went
d o w n fighting. In the singles knock
out tournament, Ketal met Greg in
the first round and Russell in the
quarters to get through to the semi
final.
Imperial ' A ' t e a m (defending cup
champs) p layed excellently to reach
quarter finals against U E A but lost six
of the first eight frames. Al l attention
focused on the blue ribbon event,
the ' A ' t e a m individuals. The play on
Friday and Saturday resulted in only
Robi and John left in the quarter
finals. Sadly Robi was knocked out in
the last 16. John c a m e through s o m e
nail bitingly c lose frames to meet
Exeter's star player in the final to be
contested over 5 frames. At fifty-one
ahead y o u w o u l d expect to win a
frame but the might of his opponent
t r i u m p h e d .
