HAWKINS SANDY RIDGE - Mr. Curvie Ed- ward Hawkins, 71, of 1568 Kallam Road, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at his home. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 1998, at Delta United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Hawkins was born in Stokes Coun- ty. He was of the Methodist faith and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Faye Hawkins. Survivors in- clude his wife, Polly Amos Hawkins of the home; his sons and daughter- in-law, Dallas Curvie and Jane Haw- kins of Stoneville and Darrell Gene Hawkins of Elkin; his daughter, Kimberly Dawn Hawkins of Chapel Hill; his brother, Johnson D. Haw- kins of Belews Creek; his sisters, Laura H. Hege of Charlotte and Hel- en H. Venable of Walnut Cove; four step-grandchildren; and seven step- great-grandchildren. SWAIM Mr. Glenn Eugene Swaim, Sr., 84, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 5, 1913 in Forsyth County to Eugene J. and Martha Mendenhall Swaim. Glenn E. Swaim has been known in the Piedmont area for many years as a successful businessman, caring pastor, and a generous friend to Baptist work in general. He became actively involved in the Triad busi- ness community when he estab- lished Colonial Furniture Shops in Wmston-Salem. Some years later he began a second successful business in High Point... Swaim Originals, Designs and Metals. Glenn has al- ways been involved in and manifest- ed a keen interest in the Pilot Moun- tain Baptist Association. He attend- ed Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and was ordained by the Oaklawn Baptist Church. In his ear- lier years, Glenn served as pastor of Easton Baptist Church and later as pastor of Bethany Baptist Church. He led both of these churches in building new sanctuaries. For many years, he was a member of Oak.lawn Baptist Church and served as inter- im pastor there for several months where he was also actively involved in a building pro~am. At the pre- sent time, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wmston-Sa- lem. Until his latter years, Glenn remained vitally interested in all that concerns the work of the Bap- tist community. Until he was diag- nosed with leukemia in 1997, he remained active with his social and business affairs. He loved his home, his family and his community of Sedge Garden where he lived most of his life. He was a special human being that will long be remembered by all whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Sapp Swaim; a son, David L. Swaim; and a daughter, Anne Swaim Wilson. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Duggins Swaim of the home; one daughter, Nell Swaim Kiser and husband, Harwick of Kernersville; one son, Glenn Swaim, Jr. and wife, Lynn of Ker- nersville; a daughter-in-law, Janie Posey Swaim of Wmston-Salem; a son-in-law, Don Wilson of Char- lotte; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Swaim and Gray Swaim; four sisters, Faye Pitts, Thelma Pfaff, Kathleen Swaim, and Sarah Conrad. WlilTlNG After an extended illness, Mrs. An- nie R. Whiting expired Sunday, June 7, 1998 at the home of a daughter, Jo Ann McCollum of 4409 Orchid Drive. She was born January l 7, 1917 in Monticello, Georgia to the late Willie Campbell and Carrie Tinsley Campbell. Mrs. Whiting had resided in Wmston-Salem for the past 41 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by four daughters, Mary L. Gordon (Jessie) of Atlanta, Georgia; Barba- ra W. Puryear (Samuel), Jo Ann Mccollum (Rodney) and Shirley Al- len, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; eight grandchildren whom she loved, nurtured and treated as her own, Cassandra McCollum, Antho- ny Mccollum, Darrell McCollum, Michael McCollum, Samuel, Jr. and Eric Puryear, Shawn Allen and An- dre Gordon; five great-grandchil- dren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Whiting was a member of Union Bethel AME Church where she belonged to the Stewardess Board Number Two and Class Number Two. Funeral ser- vices will be held Thursday, June 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Union Bethel AME Church with the Rev. William Propst officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. prior to the funeral. Inter- ment will follow at Evergreen Ceme- tery on New Walkertown Road. Mr. Joseph Manuel Hinson, 97, of 3160 Williston Road, Walkertown, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born September 9, 1900 in Union County, South Carolina to Steve and Harriett Montgomery Hinson. Mr. Hinson was a member of Manna Baptist Church and retired from Hanes Hosiery following 30 years of service. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1917 until 1921 and was preceded in death by his wife, Josie Robertson Hinson, his daughter, Melba Boston, and his daughter-in- law, Gertrude Hinson.
