1 . I N T R O D U C T I O N
I n c u t t i n g p r o c e s s e s , t h e fi n a l p a r t s u r f a c e f i n i s h i s
i n f l u e n c e d b y c h a n g e s i n t o o l g e o m e t r y , c h i p f l o w ,
t e m p e r a t u r e g e n e r a t io n , h e a t f lo w a n d t o o l w e a r .
T h e u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f t h e s e i n t e ra c t i o n s d u r i n g t h e
c u t t i n g p r o c e s s i s a f u n d a m e n t a l t a s k . I n f a c t, t h i s
k n o w l e d g e e n a b le s t h e t o o l m a k e r s t o e v a l u a t e t h e
p e r f o r m a n c e o f t h e c u t t in g t o o l d e s i g n p r i o r t o

T o s t u d y t h e c u t t in g p ro c e s s w i t h D E F O R M 2 D i t
w a s n e c e s s a r y t o m o d i f y t h e F E co d e . T h e r e m e s h i n g
m o d u l e h a s b e e n c h a n g e d f o r s t u d y i n g c o n ti n uo u s
c h i p f l o w . A n e w m o d u l e f o r s im u l a t i n g s e g m e n t e d
c h i p f l o w h a s b e e n a d d e d a ls o . In p a r t i c u la r , t h e
f r a c t u r e o f t h e m a t e r i a l c a n b e p r e d i c t e d u s i n g a
d a m a g e c ri t er i o n . W h e n t h e c ri ti c a l d a m a g e v a l u e

3. COMPARISON OF PREDICTIONS WITH EXPERIMENTS
To evaluate the cutting model, the exper imenta l
data found in liter ature [2] are compared to t he
results of the simulati ons using the same cutting
conditions (friction, workpiece mat eri al and tool
geometry). In these comparisons, the effect of
temperature is also considered.
The process parameters used in simulations and
experiments [2] are su mma riz ed in Table 2. Fig.
6 gives the comparison between the computed and
