Facta non verba

Our August events were quite successful. The Lenahans -Larry, Mary, Joanne and Kevin - combined to make the 19thAnnual Mahopac Biathlon a great day for all participants. Thenew floats were a nice improvemnt over the balloons used inprevious years. Many thanks for all your efforts.

The Phelps Way 5K attracted a field of 118 includingwalkers. Despite the fact that the runners had to negotiate a lockedgate at about the half-way point, no one's times seemed to be muchaffected. Thanks to the able volunteers who bailed me out andmade the race come off without any major problems.

The NYC Mara thon w i l l be he ld November 3 . Once

again, TRRC will have a bus to bring us to the start, then ship ourbattered bodies back later in the afternoon. In between, TRRC willhost a post-race party at the Mayflower Hotel. The bus & partyfees will be the same as last year. You can call me for reservationsat (914) 244-8544.

The Club Team Championship was well attended byTRRC. We had about 60 runners competmg. Once again we hadthe best post-race spread.

Nominations needed: Peter Meisler has agreed to onceagain serve as the club nominating committee. You are invited tonominate yourself or another club member for any elected positionof the club. The one year terms begin with the January meeting.Elections will be held at the November 13th club meeting. Nominees for president and vice-president must have served as racedirectors. All board members must be "members in good standing"for at least two years and be at least 21 years of age (i.e. You haveto be able to legally buy the beer for club fiinctions!) Electedpositions for our expanded board (which puts us back in line withour original constitution) include the following:President: Judging by those who have held this position, a varietyof personalities fill the bill. The president presides over meetings, represents the club to RRCA and with other clubs and organizations, and appoints committees, among other duties.Vice-President: We would like to elect two vice-presidents. Theyshould be willing to fill in for the president when needed, and, hopefully, consider ascending to the presidency in successiveterms. The president will also request special assigrunents of thevice presidents from time to time.Corporate Secretary: Take minutes at board and general meetings and keep a file of such. Submit insurance applications andotlier necessary regulatory paperwork and correspondence onbehalf of the club. Maintain club records.Membership Secrctarv: Keep track of club memberships andaddresses, and maintain a data base which serves to generatemailing lists/labels. The current membership secretary alsomaintains a homepage on behalf of the club on the internet.Publicity Secretary: To promote activities of TRRC and RRCA.It is hoped that enthusiasm brought to this position will greatlyenhance the mission of TRRC which is to promote ninning and theenjoyment of it! Contact with newspapers, radio, civic leaders, etc.is vital.Treasurer: To administer al l financial act iv i t ies and to have

authority to sign or disburse necessary appropriations, as directed.

THE PUTNAM COUNTY CLASSICBy: Fred and Christine Reger

Abercrombie, Adamskiy Aniunano, Benvenue, Brennan, Brockhausen, Buchannan, Byrnes Calidonna, Church, Conteau, Corsino,DaubenbiSf Davis, Deitrick, Diamond, Dintaggio, Feehan, Foley, Fritzche, Galfano, Gorman, Gormley, Handleman, Healy,

This is what it is all about!! These people, (hope wedidn't forget anyone) along with the runners, are the people whocame to make the Putnam County Classic a success!! Over ^TRRC volunteers plus 6 neighborhood water stops, the policedepartment and the fire department (well over 100 volunteers inall) turned out to help put on the race. As first time racedirectors, we needed this kind of support and wish to extend ourappreciation to all who helped out, especially to the racedirectors and board members who gave us sound advice. Somehighlights for us were: meeting new volunteers, seeing theveterans in action again, watching the race day entries pour in,stuffing 10 people into our minivan to go to traffic posts andtime splits, and of course the great sponsorship support.

The morning of July 4, 1996 brought fine weather,(around 70 degrees); 4:00 A.M. course marking due to theprevious day's rains; volunteers coming in at 6:00; race dayentries showing up at 6:05, and a great race turnout (295runners)!

Congratulations to Scott Brown, the men's overallwinner with a time of 42:38, and congratulations to EmmyStocker, the women's overall winner with a time of 52:44.

At right:3rd place David Mitzi

There was serious competition with Almiro Concalves (2ndoverall), David Mitzi (3rd overall), and Chuck Creel (4thoverall & 1st 30 - 34) running a great race. The women's sidegot great efforts from Nancy Venegas (2nd female), and DebraKenny (3rd female), with Denise Lutrick (4th female & 1st 20-29) close behind,

Our goal is to increase the popularity of this eventwithin the community in the years to come. We would like tohave more post-race amenities, increased communityinvolvement through sponsors, and also more interesting andvaluable awards to the overall and age group winners. We arelooking forward to directing the Putnam County Classic nextyear, and of course any ideas or suggestions are always welcome.

Our sincere thanks go out to all the volunteers, theCarmel Police Department, the Mahopac Falls Volunteer FireDepartment, Mahopac High School and the custodians, and onceagain our valuable sponsors (see advertisements on next page).

Arneson, Miller Place 1,2 in 1996 Track SeriesAfter three years as track series champion, Doug Miller changed places with Roy Arneson, who has been closing in on Doug.

Roy, who has for the last ten years, organized the Westchester Summer Twilight Track and Field Series, is this year's open winner. Inthird place was Roger Efraimson, who was followed by Chris Slagle.

Both Doug and Roy remain dominant on the track, as they also sent to the Empire State Games and placed first with a team in the4X800 relay. Rich Nash completed his track series with a first place in the masters division, after running a strong half-marathon inCentral Park two days prior.

Also, Elton Robinson completed the series with some fine running in his age group.Karen Antunano completed her 2nd consecutive track series, and her enthusiasm is needed in making the series an ongoing event. We are looking for some suggestions to encourage further participation next year. Thanks go to several Taconic members. Fred

and Christine Reger, who helped out at each event with the children's program. Thanks to them and to Roy and his dedicated staff whocontinue to put together an excellent program.

The /997Track Series is ready for you. Plan ahead!

Since late February, it developed into an obsession. too shabby" 2:06 (4:23.5). Also not running with fresh legs. While rummaging through my closet one evening, I found coming off an earlier individual 800, Bob went through the motions

an unlabeled VCR tape and decided to play it so that I could with about a 100 meter lead at the exchange, giving us cause for anidentify it. What I saw was something that I had long forgotten, early celebration. Bob, our lone non-Taconic member, made thesince at least summer of '95. It was the running of the 1995 exchange at an uncontested 2:21. It was my intent to run the fastestEmpire State Games 4 X 800 in Ithaca. It disturbed me greatly to 800 leg of the day. The relay was already won two legs ago, butwatch us get mopped by a strong New York City region quartet on that wasn't good enough for me. I didn't drive 7 Vi hours to justt h e fi n a l l e g . j o g a n 8 0 0 . I w a n t e d a f a s t o p e n i n g 2 0 0 a n d m a d e s u r e o f i t w i t h

In the months that followed, I focused training for a race a 29er. To test my tenacity for as long as I could, a 61.3 - 400 putthat would last all of two minutes and focused the rest of my efforts me on PR pace, but without a push, my goal seemed unlikely. Aon lobbying hard for a 40+team to go up the Empires. (Sure, it's 1:34 - 600 followed by a 2:07 finish and our mission wasa 7-hour trip, but hey, guys, it's just once!) Without any success accomplished!with the 40+ members, a younger group took the drive up to settle The sad irony here was our rivals from New York Citya score. Roy Ameson, Bob Pertak, newcomer Phil Richey and I were a no-show. Their presence at this relay would havemade this trip, determined to bring home nothing less than a Gold undoubtedly had us pushing PRs, but, as the saying goes, "YouM e d a l . g o t t a b e i n i t t o w i n i t . "

Roy led off our team and by the first lap (64.7) had In closing, I'd like to express in the great spirit of theopened a decent 4-second lead. He blew the race open with some Olympics, that although we may not have world class talent, wegutsy running despite suffering from severe allergies and having possess a competitive drive. Competing at the Empire Statealready run a race earlier. We discussed a race strategy with Phil Games offers a competitive aura on a statewide level, buton the second leg. He was to throw in a 30 second 200 meters and unfortunately, it seems to be one of the best kept secrets. I wouldpass 400 at around 61 seconds. Nothing could restrain his pace - recommend anyone over 30 to look toward '97 at Albany (a merewith sheer competitive fire he burned the 200 at 29 seconds and the 2 hour drive) where the New York City region will undoubtably to400 at 60.2. Lack of track racing experience and competition left looking to regain their gold from us. Grab a partner and let's go!

'Thank You" to the Sunrunners of Vero Beach! 1 alwayswanted to see Key West, Florida, and stand on the beach 90 milesfrom Cuba. So, on my '96 vacation trip through Florida, I stoppedin Vero Beach over the 4th of July weekend. Reading the localpaper, I found this article:

Running - The Sunrunners of Vero Beachmeet at 7 a.m. every Saturday and Sundayat the South Beach parking lot. The distanceand speed are varied and runners of all abilitiesare welcome. For information, call 281-9694.So I went and I ran two mornings with the sunrunners: 6

miles on Saturday and 8 miles on Sunday. Very, very beautiful, from the ocean over the intercoastal canal (waterway) and back tothe beach. If anybody is going there, 1 recommend it!

Thanks to Judy, the president, and Allen Reynolds of theSunrunners, for letting me run with their club. Oh, I almost forgot:On the 4th of July, there was a 5K race 20 miles north of VeroBeach. I ran this one also with my Taconic Roadrunners singletand finished first 60-69 in 23:38.

Danbury, CT - 5KBy Doug Miller

On a glooiny. ominous Saturday evening, it was quality, not quantity, thatprevailed, because the number of Taconic reps were few at "Hal City." Theyimpacted the race noticeably, however, With " Hurricane Bertha" loomingoverhead, the warm but heav\' rain pounded hard before racetime. along withwinds gusting up to 4()niph.

A large field of runners showed up for this fast course, and the rain did relent a bit at racetime. A lead pack of about eightrunners, including Francis Burdett, ran into a headwind, passing the first mile in a sizzling 4:34. New Taconic member Phil Richeypassed in 4:46, and I was about 7 ticks back.

At the halfway point, the wind played havoc for the return trip. Burdett, who has been working himself back to top formafter a winter injury, hit the second mile in 9:36, (a 5-minutc mile), but was losing contact. (Hey Masters: better keep your eyes onthis fresh catch!) Reaching the second mile in a smokin' 9:57 was Mr. Richey, 38, who was still picking off places in the last mile.(In Bethel on July 4, 1996, Phil ran a challenging 5-miler in 26:08.) To top it ofT, he ripped the final 1.1 in a blinding 5:44.

Although a 5:44 for 1.1 is a bit slow by his standards. Burdett still posted a respectable 15:21. a time most of us mopperscould only imagine. Phil was just 20 seconds back in 15:41, and 1 was at 16:12. Not to be forgotten, a recovering Alessandra Lynchran a solid i8:0I for 3rd female overall. (Watch out, Tara. She's baaaaccckkk!)

While the females showed just as much depth as the men, with 17 women breaking 21:42 (a 7 minute/mile pace), onewoman, who I feel was mnner of the day, just dominated this race as well as several other races in the past few months. Her name isZofia Wieciorkowsha of Stratford, and her time was an outstanding 16:48, placing her 19th overall.

A special mention for one of my personal heroes, who is a great inspiration and a mentor, as well as an example of durability: John Dugdale. 61, John placed 55th overall in 18:30 and look first place for 60+, During his rookie year, at age 43. Johnattained national attention, but did not really get rolling until age 49. There he ranked 2nd nationally in the lOK for 40-49 when hedipped under 33 minutes - 4 times! That same yeaar, he also ran one track 1.500 at4:17. Phew! (His lOK PR is 32:02.) Oh, andby the way. he is now ranked nationally for the 60+. NufT said!

Te r ro r i sm In The Un i t ed S ta tesBy Doug Miller

After dinner, you could sit and watch TV in the comfortand warmth of your living room. Catch a game or perhaps catch upon intemational news. In a city, you may see ambulances racingby, with their sirens wailing - chaos in the street. The woundedbeing pulled from collapsed rubble. You may even see the coveredcorpses of the less fortunate.

Radical fundamentalists claim responsibility for thesesenseless acts. Political, religious -- find a cause - spill someblood. Pick a location on the globe: Somalia, Lebanon, NorthernIreland, and the new states along the Adriatic. Too bad, you mightsay. How horrible, perhaps. Hit the remote.

Our countiy, as a whole, could never associate our societyat any time in any place with these unconscionable acts ofterrorism. However, in the last three years, we are feeling whatother countries surely have become accustomed to. We seemed sofar removed from that type of horror. They found our soft side andnow are too close to home. First, the tragedy in the World TradeCenter. Then, the heartbreak in the Heartland. Little more that ayear has passed since Oklahoma City. The United States was justbeginning to heal from the hurt, only to find itself injured againwith the suspicions from the TWA flight 800 tragedy. With theopening ceremonies of the Olympics two days later, the joys andcelebration came to offer small relief from the grief of 230 losts o u l s .

The Olympics were to exemplify the best of mankind, tounify a world. And, for sixteen days, it would restore some faith forus. In warring Greek city-states, a call for a cease-fire was in orderto honor Olympia with the best warriors in competition. Imaginea cease-fire in 1940? Perhaps after sixteen days of peace, worldleaders would have had time to mull

over the consequences of resuming a terrible war and possibly savemillions of lives. Ah, but that is just a fantasy!

However, the whole image was tarnished in Berlin. Thenthere was the tragedy in Munich, Now the games came to Atlanta, and those sorts of things wouldn't happen here, right? We weresafe from harm within the confines of the Olympic fortress. Whilejust outside, at Centennial Park, our sense of security for this andfuture United States' hosted Olympic games was forever shattered.Whether it was the act of one or many, it came as anembarrassment to the global audience.

Just what makes the Games so appealing to militants whofeel their causes so justified? Arab terrorists at Munichaccomplished nothing for their cause, but instead brought death toinnocent athletes and themselves. How can we deter a potentialdisaster from occurring at the hands of extremists? Somesuggest keeping the Games in a neutral country, such as Greece.I doubt that they could absorb the heavy financial burden every fouryears. Could they ensure a safe passage for all involved? In theOlympic Village? In the public buildings? The airports?

Inevitably, the Games go on, and with the Games go Hopeand Peace. These are the principles that have guided the modernOlympics through one hundred years of worldwide acceptance. We must not let the acts of a few break the movement, yet theseacts should make the movement stronger. Perhaps all of thenations, especially the super power, medal-hungry countries likethe United States, Russia and China should pause a moment, justone moment, to remember that there is more to these games thanjust winning. It is the miracle of joining and promoting peace.

Up Close And Personal At The OlympicsBy Vinnie Juliano

I must apologize to our die hard runners, but the women's gold soccer matcli was more exciting than Michael Johnson's final400. Come to think of it, Marie Perec's gold run was too. She is prettier than Michael, anyway!

For those of you who did not know, I volunteered my time and vacation to spend three weeks I Georgia for the Olympic games aspart of their security team. I haven't paid much attention to any of our past Olympics, but I did take notice when '96 was scheduled forAtlanta, GA. So, being so close to home, I took advantage. Awhile back, in a trade magazine, I found out that the Atlanta committee forthe Olympic games was looking for active or retired police officers from around the world, seeking volunteers for 21 to 34 days. Wewould be part of their security force, unarmed but in uniform (theirs. . .and ugly!). I've been a police officer for a long time now, and thethought of being in a uniform but unarmed was a little disconcerting. I really didn't know what to expect, or what my role would be, butthis caught my interest because of the opportunity. I applied two years ago, and was accepted in the Fall of'95.

The University of Georgia in Athens was my home for three weeks - in a dorm, eating the school cafeteria food. That, to mysurprise, was very good. Boy, did 1 feel pampered! Over 2,000 police officers from 56 nations represented this security team. It didprovide some great networking for me. My venue responsibility was the Stone Mountain Cycle Velodrome and Archery competitions. Inbetween times, I witnessed some pretty exciting events. If any of you wish to ride around on this Velodrome track, beware: Yourcompetition bike will have no brakes or gears, and on the 42 degree incline, you must maintain at least 18 mph to make it around.

Ail said and done, never have I experienced sports before such as these games provided. In a word, they were great! Besidesbeing able to get to the Olympic track one evening to witness, among others, Mr. Johnson's final 400, li went back for the closingceremonies. That night a thought came to mind as I wished I could put sneakers on, leave the gate at which 1 was stationed and sprint ontothe track. That would have been a cool picture. What 1 did do, was stand on the track with all the athletes as they poured into the center ofthe field. 1 looked p and around, watching this great spectacle, and wondered in awe at how great we entertain ourselves. The closing wasa terrific show. With an infectious electricity from 86,000 fans, 1 felt it a privilege to be there.

Oh! By the way, anybody want to trade some Olympic pins?1 9

Filling In The Gapsfrom Larry Lenahan

Since writing the article about the Club's history whichappeared in the last issue of TRL, I've heard from numerousmembers who have shared with me their views on the mission ofTRRC. These conversations and letters have been quiteenjoyable. One letter, from Phil Karpinsky, which the editor isreproducing below is especially interesting, since it illustratesthe evolution of Taconic from a different perspective - one that Ihad not been aware of Phil mentions two individuals whodefinitely had involvement in the Club early on. My apologiesfor not mentioning them as part of the founders' group.Although I know Herb and Dick, I was not fully aware of theircontributions to running and TRRC. In order to fill in the gapsin TRRC's history, I am requesting members and friends of theClub to share with me any documentation you have of events thathave occurred over the years - from the true embryonic phasethrough today. Copies of old newsletters, newspaper articles, entry blanks and flyers of any type will be helpful. They will bereturned to the sender as long as I know where to mail them.Personal experiences are also welcome. My address is 548Long Pond Road, Mahopac, NY 10541. Once 1 think I havereceived most of them, I will try to develop the document.T h a n k s !

Westchester Track & Field and Cross CountryOfficials AssociationJuly 10

Dear Larry,Ijust finished reading your article in the July 1996

Taconic Road Runners bi-monthly publication, "Taconic RoadRunners on The Threshold of Adulthood," andfound it to bevery informative. However, I do take exception to the exclusionof some of the charter members who were not given their due.

The first is myself I was the founder of the gradeschool cross country program which I began in 1967 atLakeland High School under the sponsorship of the Shrub OakA.C I did this for a selfish reason. I was Cross Country coachat LHS and 1 wanted to build up the program, so I began aseries of short races for 7th and 8th grade boys. Later, 1 addedon grades 4 to 8. As things progressed, I even included girls.About this time, the Yorktown and Mahopac Athletic Clubsasked to be included. The program as it exists today wajformulated by the original charter members: Jim Riendeau,Yorktown H.S. Track and Cross Country Coach, Herb Hillaryand John Chhstensen of Mahopac, and myself A little later,Dan Caffrey came upon the scene to round out the fore-fathersof this program. With the inclusion of the North Salem area, the program was off and running and has continued under theauspices of the aforementioned groups and directors. Later, the evolving Taconic Road Runners became established andthese races became a part of a very successful track venture inNorthern Westchester and Putnam counties. The races wererestricted to the upper part of the county because there was aspecial needfor them. The rest of the county had their ownprograms, and we wanted to establish our own. I just felt I hadto set the record straight and give credit to a number of peopleresponsible for a program that is approaching its 30thanniversary. Enclosed, find some newspaper clippings whichmention the originators of school kids cross country racing.

Truly yours,Phil Karpinsky

Taconic Masters Cruise At Club Team ChampionshipBy Phil Manski

The Taconic Masters easily outdistanced the field at the NYRRC Club Team Championship held in Central Park on July21, gaining double points in both the NYRRC and MAC Grand Prix series. After the 487 open and masters runners crossed the 5mile finish line, Taconic had a low masters score of 386, followed by Witold's (718) and Central Park (740). NeighboringWestchester finished in fourth with 812, although they did win both open male and female team titles, along with crowning bothindividual titlests with an amazing number of their runners coming from Irvington (at least that's what the results sheet said).

Steve Calidonna led the way in 26:44, beating long time nemesis Jaime Palacios, but falling just behind Luis Tipan tofinish second master. Paul Fendler (27:34), Nick Caswell (27:51), Joe Porcaro (28:33) and Scott Abercrombie (28:45) completedthe five masters scorers, with Bob Briglio (29:13) and Ken Filmanski (no relation) in 30:08 also scoring for the ten deep open teamwhich finished n inth.

The remaining 40 year olds who made the trip and displaced masters runners from other teams were Paul Pacchiana(30:22), Vic Politano (30:27), Gary Steinel (31:01), Tony Galfano (injured in 31:03), Bronislaw Czech (32:48), Jim Martin(34:32), Ray Marrero (36:30) and Kevin Moran (42:07).

Next on the agenda for this talented team is the Manhattan Hispanic Half-marathon on August 11, followed by the Oceanto Sound and Lake Winnipasaukee road relays in September. Three victories in three attempts is not unreasonable to expect.

John A lbanese Pu l l s O f f A Grea t WinBy Larry Lenahan

August 4th proved to be an excellent day for the MahopacBiathlon. John Albanese won this year's open male division of theBiathlon in a stellar time of26:08. Bonnie Jean Regan moved outof the age groupings and into the female open division with a firstplace time of 34:58. Congratulations to both of you!

I don't know if this was John's best time ever, but it is thebest time since I've been the race director of this event. In the

previous three years, starting with 1993 and each succeeding year, his times have not deviated much. In 1993 it was 27:14, 1994 animprovement to 26:54, and in 1995 a bit slower, but again, in firstplace at 28:33.

Brad Leach won the lead bathing suit award for thesecond year, but only by a couple of strokes. Steve Quinn disputesthat it was even close, since he believes he out paced Brad real wellin the water, but he came in a strong second. (You know what thatmeans about his run, then!)

Thank you one and all: participants and volunteers, formaking this a great year. Participant was up a bit, which meansthere's still an interest in this unique club event, something I wasconcerned about. The Club membership supported the event bydelivering the requisite number of volunteers needed to carry it off.Because of its special features, it takes about twenty dedicatedpeople to do the job right, which is how Taconic does the job.Special thanks to Katy Quinn, Ed McLaughlin and my wife Maryfor standing in for me in recruiting the volunteers. Another personwho deserves thanks is my daughter Joanne. She came up withidea of using "noodles," those tubular colored flotation thingsyou've probably seen in the stores. Using the "noodles"accomplishes many things: a quicker set-up time, an easier swimcourse to follow, and they're reusable, which helps the Club putmore money back into future races. (Special thanks to the Nashesfor storage!) I am also grateful to my son Kevin for the design ofthis year's logo for the tee-shirts and his creation of the awards.

Based on some recent conversations, the Club may findinterest in the Biathlon increasing in the next few years. See younext year!

(Dan Moffitt appears to be in thelead for the prestigious Super Waterstop Award thisyear. Coolers filled with iced Gatorade and freshwater, as well as an array of snacks were laid out theweek he was in charge.) Greg Diamond and NancyYoung often set up an additional waler/Gatorade stopat the end of the aqueduct course which is muchappreciated by those who like the softer surface andcool shade of that course.

Whatever distance you'd like to run.whatever the pace you'd like to hold, whatever thetype of nui you'd like to have, you'll find someone toshare it with on Saturday mornings at thepumphouse. With the Putnam County Classic 8-milcr inthe capable liands of Fred Rcgcr in Mahopac, fourTaconics traveled to southern New Jersey to run theannual Pinelands 4 mile race on July 4, Just a shorttrip from Long Beach Island the Taconic foursomemet the challenge. Although challenger Harr\'Politics listed impressive accomplishments including being an Olympic torch-bearer and senior champion, national record holder in the 1500 meters andwinner of 4 gold medals in mnning at the seniorchampionships last year, he was not up to theTaconic challenge. The TRRC foursome of Steveand Katy Quinn. Fred Loelifelm and "Joe" OwenMcCmdden took an early lead and never lookedback. Owen said he thought he would never see arunner he feared more than P ierce Brennan, bu t

Harr>' was the MAN, Not this July 4th though, nosir. 86 year old Harrv* Polities fell to the mightyTaconic foursome. Rudi: you only have to nm for 26more years to reach this milestone. Joe Handleman:now you have a goal.

We talked to Harry afterwards. He is truly a lively young man. He allowed a picture of us with the 3 V2 pound torch he carriedin the Olympic torch run this year. Harr>' told us how he lowered the 1500 meter mark for his age group by around 4 minutes to about10 minutes. In addition to winning gold medals in four mnning events, he also won a gold and silver in swimming. God bless you Harry. You are an inspiration to us all.
