The Larsest Antenna in the World

The following is a precise from an article of the same title written byBrian Dance and publ ished in Pract icalWireless,September 1983.As one would know,us being al l very technical , the length of an

antenna is extremely important to the efficiency of what frequencywe need to receive thus to receive at VLF the dimensions are

xtremely large to obtain reasonable efficiency. Why listen to VLF one may ask but they are required for military

use ie submarine communications and just general research.A group of research workers at Stanford ElectronicsLaboratory,Stanford,California were interested in the study of radiowaves reaching the earth at frequencies ranging from a few hertzdown to perhaps 0.001hz.The wavelengths for this are extremelylong ie would as far as the earth to the rnoon thus i t would beimpossible to construct an antenna.Anyway they came up with anidea to construct a "Peninsula Antenna".lt is known that salt waterdue to i ts propert ies conducts electr ic i ty wel l thus i f a sui tabtepeninsula is found and if electrodes were put at each side and fedwith VLF the electr ic i ty wi l l f low in the shortest conduct ing pathbetween the electrodes,in other words it will flow right round thepeninsula following the shore line from one electrode to the other.

In order to test this idea they experimented in the sumrner of f 975on a smal l peninsula cal led North hleck on Chappaquiddick ls landoff Cape Cod,Massachusetts.North Neck being some hundreds ofmetres across they stretched a wire 300m in length across the neckand attached 0.45m sguare copper sheets at each end under thewater and then attached a receiver system at the centre. They then received strange wai l ing sounds from space whichrequire further studying to determine exactly what they are.

fallowlng year a more activeexperiment was carried out by stretching aluminium wire across t[giron pipes immersed in the sea.The electrodes were about 180m apart.neck connected to two galvanised

produced an alternating signal by using 4 car relays connected to two 12v car batteries.ameasurement of the magnetic f ie ld was taken around the peninsula to see how the antenna wasperforming. They found that an aeroplane flying at altitudes from between 160m to 320m above the islandcould hear the transmissions.

$o there you go folks how about that for an antenna then

IS A STATION ON PACKET ?

lf l ike myself you come acrsss the situation where you would like to know if a station is on packet or notthen the following may helP.

Some BBS's hold a Database called White Pages, often referred to as WP,unfortunately for us GB?EDNdoesn't have this facility basically due to there not being enough room on the PG.One BBS that I knowthat has this facitity is GBTJSC in Bothwell and thus its the reason for use in this example.

Therefore to extract information send the following to the BBS.

cmd:SP WP @ GBZJSC {cr} Note {cr} = Enter/Return$ubject:WP REQUEST (cr)Text of Message:GM0ALW? {cr} Look for GM0ALWEA3*? {cr} Laok for all EA3 stationsIEX (cr)

The BBS will eventually reply as a personal nressage to you.

Hope this snippet wi l ! help you at some t ime.

PACKET BSX OWNER$ PLEASE NOTE

I have just experienced a prablem with my BSX where the AM79{0Modem Chip kept cn going faulty whenever the BSX was connectedto the radio.

FAULT $YMPTOMS:(1) DCD f lashing randornly when no data is being received.{2} On listening to the tx output there was no sign of any tones.

{3} The -5 volts going to aero volts.(4) The AM79t0 gets so hot that you cant touch it.{5) l t was only happening when the radio was connected.

FIX:The fault resolved to L2 (1Ouh Inductor) being OPEN CIRGUIT.Ll is an opt ional component in the BSX and is f i t ted in theNEGATIVE rail for Radio Frequency lnterference (RFl) problems, butit also isolates the 0 volt rail of the TNC to the 0 volt connection fromthe radio.ln this case with L@ faulty the radio connections had no 0 voltreference with respect to the TNC's 0 volts.

Bob GM4UYZ

Snippets:Cluster stations GBTSDX andGBTBDX are now up and runningon 144.675 albeit not 100 per centbut I have worked 2 new countriesthanks to spot announcements onthe cluster.

We Still require input to YOURnewsletter even althor.lgh its justan advert!

I am afraid I'rn as guilty as anyonebut isn't the packet system takingover from having a good chinwagsn two metres it seems more andmore that we as amateurs arecommunicating more by digitalmeans than by speech andalthough this mode has a place inlife as an amateur its should nottake over.
