Mr . Dan Locklair is composer- i n-residence at t he Brevard MusicCente r t his season . He writes the following about the compositionwe are performing tonight .

"In t he Autumn Days, a chamber symphony in five movements (playedwthout pauseJ was composed i n 1984 just following the death ofmy uncle , Wriston Locklair . Adistinguished critic for suchnewspapers and magazines as the New York Herald-Tri bune , MusicalAmerica, and ~ e r a he was Director of Public Relations and

Assistant to t e President of the Juilliard School at the time ohis dea th . An i nspi rati on to me since childhood, In the AutumnDays is dedicated to his memory .

It i s my hope that his enthusi astic , as well as gentle, spirit i

apparent in this chamber symphony . Perhaps, too, i n the energyof the fi rst movement (which returns as t he firs t part of move-r r ~ n t fi ve l-an ene rgy that was t hat of a human being who livedli fe to the fullest ,-there is , in the dissonance, t he sharpnessof grief over the sudden death of one so dear at barely age 58 ."

"changing perceptions" and EPITAPH

by Dan Locklair

~ c h a n g i n g p e r c e ~ t i o n s ~ " a five-movement · choral cyc le, wascommissfoned an premiered in 1987 by The Choral Art Society ofP o r t l a n Ma ine (Robert Russel l , Director). The poetry concernsissues of l ife and death and begins (I) and ends (V ) withmovements ba sed on poetry "by the R o c h e s t e r ~ New York poet , CarolAdler from her col lection , Day Lilies . Movement II, based onpoetry by the Kennebunkport , Mai ne poet, Christine Teale Howes, reflects on the grief of a sti ll -born chi l d. In the piano part othis movement , earl y American composer Will iam Bi llings' movinghymn tune, "W hen Jesus Wept ." provides a pungen t counterpoint tothe freely composed choral parts . Movement III, with words by thJapane se/Canadian poet, Joy Kogawa, is the only pi ece in the cycl

that is sung unaccompanied. The poem for Movement IV, "HighFlight," was given widespread national attention several years agwhen t hen President Ronald Reagan used i t to hel p console a natioin shock fo llowing the Challenger disaster . In 1939, the poet ofthe words, John G. Magee , Jr . , came to the U.S. fr om Shanghai toenter Yale University on a fu ll scholarship . Shortly thereafter, however , he withdrew from Yale and joined the Spi tfire Squadron othe Royal Canadian Air Force only to be shot down and killed in1941 at the age of 19 . This poem, celebrating first flight, waswritten one yea r before his untimely death. Though not obvious,

the famous hymn tune , ST. ANNE ("0 God, Our Help In Ages Pastil),i s spread throughout t hi s movement in the dance-like pianoaccompan iment.

Sent as a gift to The Choral Art Society (and intended to alwaysbe sung after the five-movement "c hanging serceptions" is sung anacknowledged ) is t he brief, EPITAPH . Base on an epitaph from anold Norfolk, England tombstone, i t reminds us that even death neenot always be taken seriously! -Dan Lock.lair

In the Spring of 1968 , the government of Czechoslovakia institutea sigri fi cant degree of democratic reform within its system. Thisbrief period of increase 1n freedom was ended on August 20, whenRussian t anks and troops invaded the city of Prague .

Karel Husa 's Music for Prague 1968 was commissioned by theIthaca College Concert Band and composed during the summer andfall of 1968 for the capital ci ty of Czechoslovak ia .

FORWARD

Three main ideas bind the compositon together . The first and moi mporta.nt is an 01 d Hussite war song from the 15th century, "Ye Wa

riors of God and His Law, " a symbol of resistance and hope for hundreds of years. whenever fate lay heavy on the Czech nation It hbeen utilized also by many Czech composers, including Smetana inMy Country . The beginning of this religious song is announed verysOftly 1" the first movement by the timpani and concludes in astrong unison (Chorale) . The song is never used in its entirety.

The second idea is the sound of bells throughout; Prague, namedalso the City of "Hundreds of Towers ," has used its magnificentlyso undi ng church bells as calls of distress as well as of victory .

The l ast idea is a motif or three chords first appearing very

softly under the piccolo solo at the beginning of the piece , inf l u t e s clarinets and horns . Later i t reappears at extremelystrong dynamic l e v e l s ~ for exampl e , in the middle of the Aria .

Different techniques' of composing as well as orchestratinghave been used in Music for Prague 1968 and some new sounds ex-plored , such as the percussi on section i n the II Interl udell • theending of the work, etc Much symbol i sm also appears : in addi-tion to the distress call s i n the first movement(Fanfares), theunbrok en hope of the Hussite song, sound of bells, or the tragedy(Aria), there is also the bird call at the beginning (piccolo solosymbol of the liberty wh ich the City of Prague has seen onl y formoments during its thou sand yea rs of existenceo
