INTRODUCTION

This compilation of bibliography was initiated as a project at a meeting of the Study Group on Ethnochoreology during the ICTM Conference in East Berlin, 1987. In the fifteen year history of the Study Group this meeting brought together the largest number of dance researchers from Europe, Canada and the United States. It became clear that many of us did not know about the kinds of research and resultant publications that fellow members have produced over the years. At this meeting a Newsletter was proposed to keep all of us informed of current activities, and it was further recommended that a bibliographic listing be included as a standard feature of the Study Group Newsletter. I volunteered ‘o organize the bibliographic listings.

After receiving the first lists of bibliographies from members of the Study Group, it became apparent that the Newsletter could not realistically handle the amount of material that was submitted. The Newsletter editor (William Reynolds) recommended that a separate publication be prepared. So after two years this volume is the result of submissions by thirty-four dance researchers from Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The significance of this volume is that it represents a major portion of internationally published research in the field of dance ethnology in the post-World War Two period. The earliest listing is dated 1947 (by Guilcher) and includes listings into 1989. The earliest publications were principally from Eastern European colleagues, while the western European and American research begins to appear in the late 1960s.

This international compilation is based on those who responded to requests by direct correspondence, by announcements at the Copenhagen meeting, or by announcements in the Newsletter. At the 1988 Study Group meeting in Copenhagen, there was discussion of including the works of deceased members, but this information (from several countries) could not be completed in time to be included here. In total, thirty-four respondents representing about two-thirds of the membership (active and inactive) contributed their bibliographies. By countries there are listings from Belgium (1), Bulgaria (2), China (1), Denmark (4), Finland (1), France (2), West and East Germany (2), Greece (1), Hungary (2), Italy (1), New Zealand (1), Norway (1), Poland (1), Sweden (2), Switzerland (2), United Kingdom (2), and the United States (8).

The major challenge in compiling these works was the question of format consistency. Researchers in each country have their own unique format conventions and abbreviations in producing their listings. I retyped the citations into the DdA1 reference style which requires fuller information than that used in many countries. The retyped lists were sent back to the authors for editing and for additional information.

The listings include only written and filmic materials that were published or publicly presented (but not yet published) at conferences and symposia. The three types of listings are:1) articles (in journals, magazines, proceedings, encyclopedias); 2) books (monographs, theses, dissertations, handbooks) and films; 3) publicly presented research papers. Each is easily identified by the punctuation.

1) Articles.Titles of articles are enclosed by quotation marks (" "). The title of the whole work is

always underlined (____). The location of the article in the whole work is shown by the pagenumbers which are placed after the colon (:) which follows the underlined title.

Example:Dabrowska, Graiyna1986 "Taiice kociewskie" [Dances in Kociewie]. Kociewie w muzyce: 17-24. Druga

Ogolnopolska Sesja Naukowa. Gdaiisk, Poland: Akademia Muzyczna, Wojewodzki OSrodek Kultury.

2) Whole works.Titles of whole works are underlined (_____). The number of page numbers of the whole work isplaced at the end of the citation.

Example:Guilcher, Jean-Michel1969 La contredanse et les renouvellements de la danse francaise [The contra dance and

renewals of the French dance]. Paris: Mouton. (234 pages.)

3) Presented research papers. These tides have no punctuation, but the designation of its status as a research paper and information on where and for whom the paper was presented is in parentheses following the tide.

Example:Giurchescu, Anca1987 Continuity and discontinuity in the cultural tradition of the Yugoslav Vlaiii, living in

Denmark (research paper). (Presented at the 29th conference of the International Council for Traditional Music, held in East Berlin; July.)

•The listings are organized alphabetically by author, each author's works are placed in chronological order.♦Non-English tides are translated into English. Non-Roman alphabets (except for Chinese) are produced in the original, followed by a Romanized transliteration.•Abbreviations are not used.•Added information about the listing is placed at the end of the citation in parentheses-such as the page numbers, inclusion of notation, photos, and so on.•Place of publication states the city, followed by state and/or country if the city is not the capital of its country.

A special thank you is extended to all who contributed their bibliographies to this project and who so graciously took time to edit their listings. Personally I would not have volunteered for such an arduous compiling and typing task had it not been for the Apple Macintosh computer and its capabilities for various alphabetic fonts. Also a special thank you to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Dance that supported some of the mailing costs in the continuous correspondence that was a necessary part of this project

AVANT-PROPOS
