ASSISTANT COACHNEIL CLAY

1985 MEMPHIS STATE SOCCER OUTLOOKMemphis State enjoyed its share of growing pains last season, and Coach Peter

Bermel and the Memphis State Tigers hope to progress out of that stage into oneof stability this year. Beginning their fourth year as an intercollegiate sport theteam has managed to top the .500 mark the last two years, finishing with a 10-9-3record last season.

Coach Bermel welcomes back 13 lettermen from last year's team which finishedsecond in the Metro Conference Tournament. The Tigers lost to Virginia Tech 2-1in overtime as result of a penalty kick in the championship match.

The most notable returnee is team captain Paulo Aur. Aur, who is theplaymaker, will be depended upon for his leadership role. Paulo sustained a kneeinjury last year missing half of the season, but is 100?o healthy according to CoachBermel.

The big question for this year's team lies at the goalkeeper position. Junior, ErikGilley, whose goal against average was 2.2 a game, including 140 saves underwentothroscopic surgery on his knee and looks questionable for the season. Filling thatposition will depend upon a couple of versatile players, and a crop of newcomers.

Probably the most versatile player on the team is senior David Jackson, whowill be counted on to contribute in several positions. Other top letterwinnersexpected to be starters are Kenny Heckman, and John Cooke. Heckman was adefensive specialist last year while Cooke was one of the top scorers with 22points.

Other returning starters include senior Micheal Mueller, juniors MikeKauker, Pat Fischer, Scott Hauss, and Mickey Williams. Two sophomoresthat contributed to the success of the team whom are returning are forwardJimmy Holland, and midfielder David Tappan.

The four newcomers, three from the Memphis area, include Christian BrothersCollege transfer, Ross Runs, sophomore Jeff Breslau, and freshmen BillySalter, and Matt Price. Coach Bermel expects them all to immediatelycontribute.

Each year the Tigers schedule gets tougher, and this year the same proves true.Memphis State will have 10 home games this year with such powers as GeorgiaState, Northeast Louisiana, and the University of Tennessee coming to town.Their road schedule will be a true test as the Tigers will face nationally rankedAlabama A & M, South Alabama, Appalachian State, and Vanderbiit.

Then, to conclude the regular season, the Tigers will host the Metro ConferenceTournament, November 9-10. Memphis State placed second in the tournamentlast year with Virginia Tech winning in overtime. Coach Bermel hopes again for astrong showing, and looks for Virginia Tech and Louisville to be top contenders forthe title.
