THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Lee A. Jackman Director of Development

This report reviews the important commitments made on the part of donors to Pitzer College during the past year. It was a year of significant achievements. Voluntary contributions increased by more than 80% over the preceding year, and donors increased by nearly 50%. More than $614,000 in gifts were contributed to the endowment, and gifts for the operating budget increased by 15%.

Challenge funds played a major role in increased giving. Two foundations, the Harry G. Steele Foundation of Newport Beach, California and the James Irvine Foundation, also of Newport Beach, established programs which challenged donors to increase both participation and support to Pitzer.

The Steele Foundation will contribute $1 million to Pi~zer College prior to 1986, provided the College raises a like amount. Last year, the first year of the four year program, donors met the challenge and contributed more than $700,000.

The Alumni Incentive Challenge Grant, established by the Irvine Foundation, matches dollar-for-dollar total increases in alumni giving, and awards a bonus of $25 for each new alumni donor who contributes at least $10. During 1982-83, 614 alumni participated in the Irvine Challenge, 239 of whom were new donors . In recognition of the significant increases attained by alumni, the Irvine Foundation has pledged $24,664 for the first year of the program.

Page 7: 1983 Honor Roll of Donors

As a way to encourage increased giving on the part of Pitzer faculty and staff, trustees Anthony Barash and Polly Plesset established the Plesset-Barash Staff/Faculty Challenge. The response was overwhelming: a 193% increase in giving, and a 71% increase in donors. As a result, the College received nearly $ro,ooo in matching funds from Mr. Barash and Mrs. Plesset.

Over the past four years, significant fund-raising progress has been made. In 1979-80, the primary goals of the development program were to plan and implement a strong and consistent annual giving program (gifts for the operating budget, including scholarships), and to increase the number of donors making annual gifts to the College. Since that time, annual giving has increased by 72% and the donor base has increased byro8%. Our goals have been achieved.

"Although our fund-raising progress has been good, we cannot rest on our laurels," said Katherine Cone Keck, Chairman of the Trustee Development Committee, "We now must build the endowment of the College."

It is fitting that in this, the 20th anniversary year of Pitzer College, we are continuing to build for tomorrow.
