The purpose of the Stony Brook Fencing Club is to foster, to promote and to practice the sport of fencing. Generally, the Club meets twice a week and in each meeting they set up bouts between prospective fencers to prepare them to fence in any intercollegiate competitior~. An advanced fencer is also assigned to give lessons to the beginners at the meetings.

HARMONY is Stony Brook's only English-Chi- nese literary publication. The magazine serves as a "Bamboo Bridge" (the magazine's Chinese name) between Asian and Western cultures. Pro- duced two to three times e semester, each issue contains: creative writing, prose poetry, art work, interviews, current events, and much more in both English and Chinese.
Stony Brook Hospital Volunteer Program
The Stony Brook Hospital Volunteer Program is a group of 300 student volunteers who visit patients in four state psychiatric hospitals in Suffolk County. A separate coordinator exists for each hospital along with individual group leaders who supervise volunteers on the wards. Their program is not theraputically oriented. Rather it recognizes the fact that most psychiatric in-patients rarely leave the hospital and often have no contact with their families. The Stony Brook program attempts to provide these patients contact with the outside world along with some of the human warmth and feeling that is too often missing in the hospital.
Stony Brook Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation
Hillel, the organization of the Jewish student community of Stony Brook is dedicated to bringing cultural, social, educational and spiritual programs and activities to the Stony Brook campus. Their activities have ranged from dances to the Jewish Arts Festival, Israeli Felafel Houses to their Film Festival, social action projects to Holiday celebrations. While they are the Jewish student organization their activities are open to all members of the campus and community. Hillel continues to be an active part of the Interfaith Center. Hillel continues to be a vibrant addition to Jewish life on campus and to Stony Brook in general.

PARTING THOUGHTS
The importance of Specula '77 isn't in its first reading, or even in its second. It's importance is in next month's and next year's reading, when a picture evokes pleas- ant memories or a comment brings a smile. Our goal was to publish a memorable yearbook whose importance and value grows as time passes.
Putting together a yearbook is a lot of hard work, it is also a lot of fun. A competent hard working staff did everything they could to make this book a success. There are so many people to thank it is hard to know where to begin. To thank each staff member individually is impossible given the limitations of space. The staff deserves full credit for the yearbook you see before you. They worked many long, hard, often frustrating hours to put this yearbook together. They know they have my sincerest thanks for their efforts.
In addition to the staff there are a number of people who worked behind the scenes to produce this yearbook. These special people helped create the founda- tions upon which this book was built. One such person is Ed Stratton, our Western Publishing Company representative. He spent many hours with me and the staff helping turn abstract ideas into concrete actions. He acted as a sounding board, listening to all our outrageous ideas, helping us examine them to find the best ones for the book. He was also a great help to me by patiently listening to many hysterical phone calls, offering reassurance that we really could put all our ideas together to produce a yearbook we could all be proud of. I believe we have justified his faith in US.
Bob Biello and Dave Greenberg of David Greenberg Studio also deserve special thanks. The quality of their work is evidenced by the beautiful portraits in the senior section.
I must take a few minutes and thank some of the people who helped me function during this year. To my suitemates Ann, Sheryl, Caryn, Regina, and to my roommate Elinor, a simple thank you doesn't seem sufficient. You made the suite a great place to call home. Thanks.
Finally, to Elliot, the big brother I've always hoped for and tile special friend I found. You helped me learn a great deal about myself. You were there when I needed you. For this and for your friendship, thank you.
All the work is done, All the hours spent. I hope you enjoy the product of our work, next week, next month, ahd next year.
Sincerely,
Helen Moore Editor-in-Chief
