F Richard Martin CAN and F Matti Hagman FIN named game’s top players

In 1972, Richard Martin left Team Canada (with permission) after failing to see any action in the first five games. He was labelled, by some, as a deserter. “I didn’t like what happened then and I

guess I had it in the back of my mind that I’d like to rectify it.”

Team Canada’s captain F Bobby Clarke CAN suffered a sprained Achilles tendon in right leg in third period. After his x-rays, Clarke said, “If I can skate, I’ll be playing (in Canada’s next game).

I didn’t come this far to sit back and watch.”

“The Czechs have been together many years and their team play is strong,” Soviet coach Robert Cherenkov said. “Our team is in the development stage with many new players and our play as a team

is not good. We’ll improve as the tournament advances.” Team Canada players and coach attended this game to do a little scouting. “We figured the Czechs

hadn’t showed us everything,” said Canada’s head coach Scotty Bowman. “The (exhibition) game against us was their first one here and they were a little tense. They’re a good, smart, physically

strong team with poise and discipline. They’ll be very tough and so will the Soviets for that matter.”

Coaches: SWEDEN, Hans Lindberg; UNITED STATES, Bob Pulford, Harry Neale 12 211 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto

American netminder Mike Curran said of Sweden’s club, “Not only are they pros, they are pros

who are all playing well in North America. Against these kind of players, you can’t afford to be a man short and, in the case of some times tonight, two men short.”

USA was handed 24 minutes in penalties in first period by referee Bill Friday of the World Hockey Association “We were a little rusty because we have not played for a week,” said Sweden’s winger Inge

Hammarstrom. “In my opinion, we began to play a little poorly on defence. There was a lot of yelling and screaming on our bench and some guys exhausted themselves. We’ll have to get together,

slow things down and just play our positions. If we do that, we can beat most teams here.”

Finland’s goaltender Antti Leppanen was named his team’s best player, despite letting in eight goals

Newspaper reports, following the game, indicated that the Czechs laughed at the Finns following each goal scored. “I think this team, like most, prefers to win with humility and lose gracefully,” fumed

Finland co-coach Carl Brewer, the former NHL and WHA star. “A lot of (those teams) will be pulling for Team Canada to wipe those smiles off their faces.”

Following this game, the Soviet Union informed Canada Cup chairman Alan Eagleson that they were

“considering” pulling out of the tournament unless they received guarantees of improved refereeing in future games

In this tie v. Sweden, Canadian referee Andre Legsse awarded Sweden two separate 5-on-3 power plays in the first period

After the game, Sweden’s defenceman Borje Salming said, “I wish I knew why we’ve been very strong in the first period and then our legs just go like fence posts in the second. We got some of

it back in the third but we just have to be more consistent, especially against the Czechs and Canada.”

“It’s a great disappointment to us to be losing by such big scores after we played well in the exhibitions in Europe,” Finnish centre Veli-Pekka Ketola, of the WHA’s Winnipeg Jets, said. “But I

think the short camp is hurting us now. We just don’t have the stamina of, say, the Soviets and Czechs, who have been in training since who knows when. The Soviets set a pretty fast pace and when

we did get to within one goal of them with a big effort in the second period, they just had more zip left than we did.” The majority of Finland’s players hold regular jobs and are using their vacations

for the series. Prior to the game, the Soviet Union admitted its players are paid to play hockey. “The team is

subsidized by the government,” said Viktor Khotochkil, secretary and public relations director for the Soviet Ice Hockey Federation. “That is allowed by the International Olympic Committee.”

“It’s not a very great feeling, playing as badly as we have and having people laugh at us,” said Finland captain Veli Pekka Ketola. “We were unhappy with our last three games (which were

all losses.” Sweden’s forward Anders Hedberg said the Finns “had something to prove…and in every tournament

they always play their best against us.” But Hedberg added, “There’s no excuse, it just didn’t work for us. They were skating harder and, defensively, nothing worked for us. When

you score six goals, you should win.”

Following this win over Canada, Czechoslovakia was in top spot in the tournament standings “Yes, it must rank as the biggest victory in Czechoslovakian hockey history because this is the finest

Canadian team ever assembled,” said Czech coach Jan Starsi. “Winning the World Championship in 1972 and 1974, of course, was very important, but this victory was against a simply great

team of brilliant players.” Vladimir Dzurilla was Czechoslovakian national team netminder for eight years until he was

mysteriously dropped from the club following the 1972 World Championship win. There were rumbles that his brother’s defection to Canada motivated the move.

Czechoslovakia opened its training camp as a unit on 23 July and played five exhibition games in Europe before coming to North America

Canada’s two back-up netminders, Gerry Cheevers and Glenn “Chico” Resch, have not seen

any action in the tournament. Los Angeles Kings’ G Rogatien Vachon has played every minute. Canadian coach Scotty Bowman said, “It was easier getting the guys up for this one than it was

for the Czechs.” The morning after this game, as Canada had a light skate at Maple Leaf Gardens, Soviet netminder

Vladislav Tretiak showed up and gave a brown fur hat to Team Canada captain Bobby Clarke as a

thank-you for all Clarke had done for the Soviet teams during the times they’ve visited North America

Due to Bowman’s line juggling, C Phil Esposito was benched for much of the game. “It’s the coach’s decision and I guess it was the right one,” said Esposito. “We won, didn’t we?

But any player who tells you he likes sitting out like that is a bleeping idiot.”

Referee for this game was Gordon Lee of the United States but, in the first period, he was struck over the left eye by a Lanny McDonald shot and required 17 stitches. Sweden’s Ove Dahlberg

stepped in to finish the game as referee.

“Three goals came directly from their forechecking,” said Czech coach Karel Gut. “After going down four goals, there isn’t much we could say to the players. It was bad. We just gold them to score

some goals.” “We’ve been told that psychology is everything with Holecek,” said Team Canada co-coach

Don Cherry. “If he gets nervous, they have to yank him because he’s useless. But if things start going right for him, he can become unbeatable and that’s what I was petrified of. See, I wouldn’t

think they could possibly beat us now any other way except if they get redhot goaltending like last week.”

“I’ve said it before and it’s even clearer to me now,” Bobby Hull CAN said. “The trouble with these European teams is that they simply can’t make adjustments during a game. They’ve practiced

their set patterns and they stick with them, no matter what. Occasionally, they win with them and

it looks beautiful. But a Canadian team will alter its plans if they see it’s not working. Not these

people. They just won’t change.”

After the game, F Darryl Sittler CAN credited Team Canada co-coach Don Cherry with guiding

his decision on the game-winner in overtime. “Don came down to the dressing room in the intermission before the overtime and gave us some advice I had in mind when I scored. He said

the Czech goalie was coming awfully far out of his net any time we were shooting from the wings. He was cutting down the angles so much our shots were all hitting him. Don suggested we try

delaying a bit, taking an extra stride or two and then shooting.”

Following the game, Team Canada captain Bobby Clarke received the Canada Cup from Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau

Ontario Premier Bill Davis and American tennis player Bobby Riggs were in the crowd Prior to game, standing room tickets were still available for $8

Players of the Game were F Darryl Sittler CAN and G Vladimir Dzurilla TCH. Each received the customary Eskimo soapstone carvings.

After the game, in the dressing room, D Bobby Orr CAN enjoyed a cigar and a beer with Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot. Following this tournament, Orr would only play 26 more NHL games, all

with Chicago Black Hawks, before retiring in 1978. 18 players on Canada’s 25-man roster in this tournament were later elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame

It was estimated that nearly half of all Canadians watched this final game…with 10.7M viewers, it was the most watched television event in Canadian history at the time
