Car of the Month

BUT IT’S PURPLE

by Diana Stanley

September 2004, Bob’s birthday week-end and we were looking for somethingspecial to do with the possibility of get-ting away for a couple of days. Bob andI had been talking about purchasing aBritish car, but, we hadn’t ownedone since our oldest daughter wasfour years old. In 1971, weowned a 1970 Lemon Yellow MGMidget and a few years later weowned a 1968 Yellow MGBGT.However, at that point, we hadno idea what we wanted orwhere to look for a car. Bob’sresearch led him through severalwebsites and the BritishInvasion’s site caught his eye.So, Friday morning we packed ourbags. Before we left we dis-cussed the possibility of makinga purchase and decided that wewere “just going to look”. So wedecided to leave the check bookhome. We headed for Stowe.

Saturday morning we walked around townfor a bit before heading to the show field. The town was as picturesque as we hopedit would be. Beautiful shops, mountainsand, of course, lots of Little British Carsdriving down the streets making us drool!( It was embarrassing.) You see, eversince we sold the MIdget, we were kick-ing ourselves for selling that little gem.Our problem was, the Midget was ouronly car and one driver ( who shall re-main nameless) was too pregnant to movethe seat up far enough to reach the clutch. Therefore, the car had to go! Enter theSubaru!

Well, back to Stowe. We made our wayto the show field. It was, of course, cloudy, drizzling and chilly with the sunstruggling to peek through the clouds. Wewere in LBC heaven!!! It had been somany years since we had been around somany beautiful British cars we didn’tknow what to do.

As we were walking around, we dis-cussed what make of car we’d like to buy.We had only owned MGs. We thoughtabout buying one to restore, but, knew thatwe had little time on our hands to finishour house so purchasing a car in need ofa complete restoration would not be thebest of all plans for us. We were surethat every owner on the field had pains-takingly restored their car, taking yearsto complete. Those thoughts made us feel

guilty about not wanting to restore the carourselves.

The field, as you may know, was filledwith wonderful examples of British auto-motive history. Some of the ownersproudly explained their car’s journeythrough years of use, rust and restora-tion. I would say that we spoke to at least10 owners who had done all of the workthemselves. However, we spoke to about30 owners who had purchased their carsrestored. Suddenly, all that guilt we feltabout not wanting to restore a car van-ished. It was a weight lifted from ourshoulders.

The weather began to clear and we werereally enjoying the show. We meanderedover to the Car Corral to see what carsmight be for sale. We spotted severalMGBs in various stages of restorationand price. None of them jumped out atus. We looked at a blue TR6 which lookedgood from 30 feet away. The paint wasOK; the interior was the same. The en-gine compartment was in obvious need

of care and when the owner started theengine we knew that was in need of re-pair as well.

Then we saw a purple TR6. We walkedaround the car and the paint looked reallygood. Bob was under the car looking atthe rocker panels and he couldn’t see anyrust on it at all. The exhaust system wasnew and the car looked in generally goodshape. The owner was not around, sowe waited for a while, but, he never came

round. We talked about thecolor saying to each other,“It’ s purple.” Do we reallywant a “purple” car? Is that’sit’s original color? What willhappen if we try to sell itlater?

We walked away, all the whilethinking of the car’s exteriorcondition and telling ourselveswe had just come to the Brit-ish Invasion to “look”, not“buy”.

We went back to the car sev-eral time on Saturday but theowner was still not around. We were disappointed be-

cause we wanted to see the interior andhave the car started to make sure theengine was intact. (But, remember now;we’re just looking).

The show ended for the day. Leavingthe field, we tried one more time to catchup with the owner of the purple TR6. Hewas no where to be found. Well, we werestaying for the night, so, we’d try again inthe morning. The purple TR6 was allwe talked about and thought of thatevening.

By the time Sunday morning arrived wewere very anxious to get back to the fieldto speak with the owner. Price, of course, would be a major factor in our decision. We had never owned a Triumph but, somehow, we really liked the look of thecar ( purple or not) and loved the factthat it was a six cylinder instead of four.

As we arrived at the show field, we weresurprised to see the field so empty. It

Prime Minister’sMissive

Our name is getting out there as “The ItGroup for 2012.” Well, at least we arenow getting calls from people asking usto use them as a Destination for a Sun-day Dinner Drive rather than us havingto “come up with ideas.” But then maybeit’s just the bad economy and people arelooking for any source of 20 to 30 newcustomers.

I’ll take “The It Group” interpretation.

Anyway, we have been invited by AlexSeidel to visit the Merrimack Street Ga-rage which was the largest foreign carfranchise in New England during the1950s and 60s and carried Austin Healey,M.G., Jaguar, Austin, Morris, Borward,Panhard, Citroen, Saab, Morgan, AlfaRomeo, DKW, Triumph, Isetta, Vespa,Sunbeam, Fiat, Porsche, and Volvo. Theywere also the first and largest importerof the TVR.

We have been invited by David Clark tovisit Sports Car Services in Westminster,Vermont (just across the river fromAbingdon Spares in Walpole, NH) whereDavid’s crew of five mechanics doeseverything for routine maintenance to fullblown restoration.

And just to show that our “reach” goesbeyond automotive enthusiasts, we havebeen invited to meet at the BarnstormersPlayhouse in Tamworth for a Matineethere – with lunch or dinner at a local res-taurant before or after.

Watch the Calendar Section of the Boot,Hood and Bonnet or on the Events Pageof the WWW.BCNH.ORG website tosee when these outings actually get sched-uled.

As stated in previous Prime Minister Mis-sives, I know that we run the risk of sched-uling “too much.” But I’d rather havemembers only be able to make it to halfof the many events “because of schedul-ing conflicts,” than not make it to anybecause there were so few opportunities.

Its gonna be a great season for BCNH.

IF YOU HAVE OTHER IDEAS – LETUS KNOW.

Also please think every once in a whileabout contributing an article to the News-letter.

1. When you attend an event – and havea good time – tell the rest of us about it.

2. When you are reminiscing about whenyou bought your current car – or a previ-

ous one – and how much joy it has broughtto your life – tell us the story.

3. If you’ve had a particularly vexing prob-lem – or have gratefully “found a fix” forone – tell us about that too.

4. If you find material in other sourcesthat you think our membership would en-joy or benefit from, send in the reference.John and Lin will check for reprint autho-rization from the source and print it if theycan.

never dawned on us that since the tro-phies were given on Saturday that so manycars would not return on Sunday. Weheaded straight to the Car Corral and theTR6. Hallelujah!!! the owner was there. He was from Ontario, Canada and wasin the business of restoring British cars.We introduced ourselves to Scott andexplained that we were interested in dis-cussing the car with him. He told us theprice and it was about what we werelooking to pay for a restored car, so thatwas a plus. We reviewed the interiorwhich was very well restored and clean.Bob asked him to start the engine. With-out hesitation, Scott opened the bonnet, connected the battery cables, pulled thechoke and turned the key. It started onthe first turn. Remembering what ourMidget and BGT sounded like, the TR6sounded pretty much the same with a littlemore growl when you step on the gas.We knew that carburetors would have tobe adjusted and the engine compartmentwould have to be completely inspectedand cleaned. As you can see, the list ofthing we needed to do to the car was al-ready being compiled in our heads. Ourestimation was that the car was 85%complete. We were sure we couldhandle the last 15%.

To avoid making a hasty decision, we toldScott we would take a walk to discussthe price and condition. The questionthat loomed over our heads was thatcolor!!! We kept saying, “ But it’spurple.” The farther away we walkedfrom the car, the less important the colorbecame and the more important the listof repairs became. Somehow, though,we knew this was the “one”! Yes, thiswas the car we weren’t going to buy thisweekend because we were just going tolook!!! And yes, this is the car weweren’t going to buy because we left thecheck book home!!!

Well, as you might guess, we couldn’t getback to the Car Corral fast enough. Wemade the deal and gave Scott as muchcash as we could spare as a deposit.

Now the only thing left to do was to makearrangements to take delivery of the car.We couldn’t take delivery that day be-cause we had no way to trailer the carhome. So, back to Canada it went togather all the car’s documents and togather some of the parts we would needto complete the car to get it ready to reg-ister. ( The car was missing a backbumper and some small cosmetic items.)

After checking our schedules, we madearrangements to meet Scott at the US/Canada border to complete the transac-tion and take possession of the Magenta(not purple) TR6 on Columbus Day week-end (aka Canadian Thanksgiving).

The drive home from Stowe was filledwith conversations of moving the trucks& tools around the garage to make roomfor the TR6. It didn’t need much; just acorner.

During the next few weeks, we e-mailedScott several times to discuss the docu-ments we would need to make a smoothtransfer when we took possession of thecar at the border.

Just to make sure we knew what weneeded, Bob and I called US Customs toask questions about the fees we wouldincur during the transfer. It all soundedvery simple.

In preparation, Bob reserved a U-Haulcar carrier making sure to confirm thereservation two days before. Everythingwas in place to leave on Saturday morn-ing for the Canadian Border (or so wethought).

Early on Saturday morning, Bob called U-Haul in Concord, New Hampshire to letthem know he was on his way to pick-upthe reserved carrier. The store managertells Bob that the closest carrier was inBangor, Maine and that the reservation isnot a true reservation. It’s more like,“whoever gets to the store first, gets thecarrier.” He also told Bob, “If you wantthe carrier, you need to go to Bangor toget it.”

Bob couldn’t believe what he was hear-ing. We had a 4pm appointment to meetthe owner at the Rouses Point border

crossing to take possession of the car. Itwas going to take the folks in Canadaabout the same amount of time to reachthe meeting point as it would us. If wedidn’t find a car carrier, we would haveto cancel the meeting. We were in panicmode!!!!

The manager at the Concord U-Haul shopsuggested we call other U-Haul officesto try to locate another carrier. We putour anger aside because we didn’t havetime to deal with that; we needed to finda carrier; fast!!!! Bob went on line tofind all the U-Haul offices betweenBarnstead and Rouses Point. He locateda couple of rental facilities in New Hamp-shire but they didn’t have a carrier avail-able. While Bob was busy with that, Iwas on the other phone calling our neigh-bor, Nancy. Nancy is originally from Is-land Pond, Vermont. She is very familiarwith the towns in that area on the borderof Canada. Nancy went on line and lo-cated a U-Haul shop in Plattsburgh, NY.They had a carrier available. The onlyproblem; the shop closed at 2pm. Itwas 9am and we had to make it throughNew Hampshire and across Vermont andacross Lake Champlain on the ferry tothe U-Haul shop by 2pm. Could we doit? We had to try. At 9:30am we walkedout of the door in Barnstead and were onthe road.

Once we got onto Route 93 North, wedidn’t pay any attention to the speed limitsigns. Of course for those of you whohave traveled with us before, that’s not ashock. The scenery that day was a blurand finally at 1:30pm we reached the ferrylanding at Lake Champlain and boardedthe boat. We called the U-Haul shop at1:50pm to ask how long it would take usto get from the ferry terminal on the otherside of the lake to their shop. Ten min-utes was the time frame and they saidthey would stay open for us. We arrivedat the shop and found the car carrier allready for us. We signed the papers, thanked the staff for staying past closingand were on our way to Rouses Point.

We arrived in Rouses Point around 3pmand, with a sigh of relief, decided to havesomething to eat and take a break fromthe day’s tensions. During lunch we got

a phone call from Scott. He said he hadencountered a lot of Canadian Thanks-giving holiday traffic and would be de-layed a couple of hours. We weren’tthrilled to hear that, but, we understoodand said we would be happy to wait atRouses Point. We’d see them around6pm. When we mentioned Rouses Point,Scott said: “Rouses Point”? “ We’re notmeeting at Rouses Point!!!” “ We’remeeting at Massena, NY”. We wereshocked!!! Where is Massena, NY andhow far away was it from Rouses Point?

Scott explained that he never brings a carthrough Rouses Point because the bor-der guards are difficult to deal with. Wehad just visited with the border guardsasking questions about the process ofbringing the car into the US. We we weregiven very clear answers. The borderguard said it should be a simple process.

That being said, we still had to make atrip to Massena, NY. By the time wefinished our conversation with Scott, itwas about 5pm. Scott was still in trafficand he told us the ride to Massena wasabout 4 hours from Rouses Point. So,back in the truck we went and on theroad.

Bob and I felt like time was moving inslow motion. This was the longest 4 hourride ever. Finally, we arrive at theMassena border crossing. We immedi-ately, went inside to speak with the bor-der guards. They told us the processwould be simple. We would have to showthem the car’s documents and pay thefee.

Simple !!!

Well, Scott arrived at 9:30pm. He hadthe car, the bill of sale and all the regis-tration documents from Canada ready togo. Everything seemed to be right ontrack; or so we thought. The three of uswalked into the border patrol office andstepped up to the desk. A border patrolofficer; (we’ll call him Officer P), askedif he could help us. We explained thatwe were purchasing a 1974 Triumph TR6from Scott. Officer P asked if Scott hadall of the Canadian ownership documents?Scott presented the papers. Officer P

told us that the documents did not includea letter from the manufacturer stating thatthe ’74 Triumph met the 2004 emissioncodes in the US. Scott explained thatTriumph had been out of business since1984 and the car was over 25 years oldand the emission codes did not apply to acar of that age.

Immediately, Officer P turned into the US/Canadian border patrol version of a nastyBarney Fife!!! He put his hand up in frontof Scott’s face as if he was a crossingguard stopping traffic. He told Scott to“hold on”. Officer P began spouting rulesand regulations regarding the import of amotor vehicle.

Now, as I mentioned before, Scott is inthe business of restoring and selling cars. This was not his first time on the merry-go-round and he was not taking kindly tothe attitude of Officer P. Scott tried toexplained that he had never been askedto produce the emission documents forany previous transaction, but each timeScott began to speak, Officer P would putup his hand in Scott’s face like a policeoffice on traffic duty. I asked the Officerif he could show us a sample of this docu-ment? When I spoke, up came thehand!!!! For the next 20 minutes, that’sall we saw was the officer’s hand in ourface; all we heard were the words: “ Iam speaking!”

Finally, we were allowed to speak, so, weasked if we could fill out some of the stan-dard forms there in the office, pay thefee and fax or express mail anything elseOfficer P would needed once the holidayweekend was over? Officer P grantedus permission (in all his magnificence)with a threat attached to his generosity. He told me, “If you don’t have all of thedocuments in my hands within 30 daysfrom today, I will send US Customs of-ficers to you home in Barnstead, NewHampshire to confiscate your vehicle. Then, you will have to pay some seriousfines and you may be arrested!”

At this point, Bob and I had all we coulddo to keep Scott calm. He had neverexperienced a border transfer like this. Now that Officer P had told us we couldtake the car home, we really wanted to

get out of the office and remove ourselvesfrom the situation. Once we got outsideand we all calmed down, we told Scottthat we would take care of all of the pa-perwork on Tuesday after Columbus Dayand we’d let him know how it all turnedout. The three of us got the TR6 offScott’s trailer and onto the car carrier andwe were on our way with “the new baby”.

We thought about stopping at a hotel forthe night, but decided not to because thecar was uncovered and we didn’t want itdamaged before we got a chance to en-joy it. So, we headed home to Barnstead. At this point, we were running on adrena-line, coffee and bagels. It took us fourhours to travel from Massena, NY backto Plattsburgh to catch the ferry back intoVermont. Long, long story short: wepulled into our driveway at 3:30 am Sun-day morning, happy to be home and verytired.

The rest of the weekend we looked thecar over from headlight to tailpipe andwere pleased with what we saw. But,the most important task was still aheadof us on Tuesday morning.

I got on the phone starting at 8 am withthe US Customs office in Portsmouth,New Hampshire to see if I could acquirethe information Officer P required to com-plete our transaction. The Customs of-ficer I spoke to had no knowledge of anemissions compliance form for a car 25years old or older. He told me I must bemistaken. He told me to call the Bostonoffice. I did that with the same results. Icontacted three other Customs agenciesall with the same response, “You don’tneed any forms. The car is too old to meetthe standards. Your car is grandfathered.”

After a couple of hours of hearing thesame answer, I decided to call the borderpatrol office at Massena, NY to speak toa supervisor. When I called, the supervi-sor was at a different location, so, I wouldhave to call her there. I reached her andexplained what happened on Saturdaynight including the threat and hand in theface aspects of the conversation. I askedher if I had to produce the letter from a

company which had been out of businesssince 1984 and/or this elusive emissionscompliance document?

Her response was, “ He did what?!?!?!”I repeated the explanation. She askedhow much I paid for the car? I told herand she responded, “Fill out the standardtransfer document, attach a check for$103.00 and express mail the package toOfficer P’s attention. I will take care ofthe rest of this mess and you will have nofurther problems from Officer P. Pleaseaccept my apologies and good luck withthe car.” I did as she requested and shewas right; we never heard from OfficerP or his hand again.

It took us from October 2004 to June of2005 to get the bugs out of the MagentaTR6. All the month of June we drovethe car as much as time would allow. Allthe time we spent working on the car andlearning about the Triumph just confirmedthat we had made the right decision.

In July 2005 we heard about a car showat Strawberry Banke and decided to go.That day we joined BCNH and won 1stplace in our class. It was an excitingday.

Since that time, we have had a lot of funwith the “Barney Purple” car and hopeto enjoy it for many for years. We havecertainly been bitten by the LBC bugagain and don’t really want to take thecure. Since 2004 we have purchasedtwo more cars.

By the way, remember in the beginningof this story, we decided to leave thecheck book home because we weren’tgoing to buy anything at the British Inva-sion? Well, two years ago at the 20thAnniversary of the British Invasion, wedecided to do the same thing. Guess whocame home with a 1983 Jaguar XJ6?

The moral of this story (well for us any-way) is: don’t worry about the color ofthe car and don’ t leave the checkbookhome.
