January 4 2007 is a date that stays in Craig Lawson’s mind. It’s when he suffered an aneurysm, a bleed in the brain and his life suddenly became a lot harder. Before this event Craig was a rising star on the Ruakaka business scene. His Lawsons Cartage trucking and earth -moving company was riding high on the wave of the Ruakaka subdivision boom. “I worked my arse off”, said Craig.I started at 6am in the morning and worked all day and then I worked late into the night on the bookwork. The after effects of the aneurysm are numerous. He has lost his sense of balance and walks around on crutches. He suffers regular severe headaches. He can’t concentrate for too long on anything. Why is Craig Lawson so angry?“Why don’t you thieving rat bastards bugger off?” Craig Lawson wrote this at the end of a letter to the Bream Bay News about the numerous thefts he has suffered to his business and home.

Craig Lawson is one tough individual. He had to be I suppose to succeed in his trucking and contracting business. Now, even suffering from the debilitating effects of an aneurysm, he is struggling on – selling everything he can to keep his business afloat through the recession and to replace goods taken in numerous thefts he has suffered from his business and home. Understandably he is very, very angry. Do the people who have committed these robberies know what this man and his family have been through? I wish there was some way to bring these criminals face to face with the hardship and damage they are causing and to make them understand that owning a yard full of trucks doesn’t necessarily mean you are sitting on a bed of roses. I have been looking on the website at the Envirosmart programme in which the Bream Bay News printer in Tauranga participates. The manager of this press commented to me that many of his customers now ask about his plant’s sustainability before they commit to doing business. The scheme was initiated by Auckland’s North Shore City Council and is now operated by a number of councils throughout New Zealand according to standards set by the Crown Research Institute - Landcare Research. Participating businesses are given Envirosmart certification, if over a two-year period they reduce solid waste and, if possible, make efficiency gains in their use of energy, water and raw materials. They also need

to make surer their suppliers and contractors operate in an environmentally sustainable way and to adhere to all relevant environmental best practice codes. The APN Tauranga Press has reduced the amount of waste paper it produces by two thirds. It now recycles items like the page rollers used in the press, switched to vegetable based inks and is careful not to buy paper from non renewable forest sources. In the process it is attracting more customers and saving money. There are lots of other interesting examples on the Envirosmart website. A company called Lowery Supa Cutters of Auckland’s North Shore, for example now saves 85 - 90% of the wastewater it uses in the concrete-cutting process by returning it to the site facility where the solids are separated out and high pH water treated and stored for reuse in the cutting sequence. In the process this company developed a new business, which offers a concrete-slurry collection service for other commercial concrete cutters. Are Northland businesses missing out here? Environmental sustainability are not just a buzzwords. They need to be demonstrated in measurements as solid as the concrete Lowery Supa Cutters expertly cut through, saving wastewater as they do so. I wish the Northland Regional Council and/or the Whangarei District Council, would get in on this act.

Road sealing off the agenda

Road sealing plans for Massey Road, Brooks Rd and McLean Rd. in Waipu and Pirihi Rd in Takahiwai are off the Whangarei District Council’s agenda. A cutback in a Government subsidy, which in the past has met 62% of the cost of new seal on the district’s country roads, means that no seal extension work will take place in the Whangarei District in the foreseeable future. Funding for the sealing of the above roads (and two others in other parts of the district) at the rate of $2 million per year had been allocated in the council’s Long Term Community Council Plan (LTCCP) but this was on the assumption the 62% subsidy would continue to be available. Jeff Devine, the council’s Roading Manager, explained to Councillors as they considered this year’s annual plan, the Government has made major projects on the state highway network such as the proposed Puhoi to Wellsford upgrade its priority. He said, although his department would reapply for subsidy for seal extension projects next financial year, it is still uncertain that subsidy will be available, and he was “unable to say when this situation will change”.Mr. Devine told the Councillors it would be “uneconomic” to continue with the seal extension programme without the subsidy and gave as an example the Massey Road project. Ratepayers in this road were to have each paid a $6,000 contribution for the sealing of their road in a targeted rate. Without the subsidy this contribution would increase to $14,000 and the general ratepayers share of the cost would rise from $250,000 to $560,000.Residents who live along these unsealed roads say they regularly need to have repairs done to their vehicles. Rosemary Neave who lives on Massey Rd said things get “shaken loose or shaken off or filled with dust. The ruts sometimes bounce cars around onto the opposite side of the road.”“The school bus will only go 2 kms up as beyond that

there is a corner the bus driver will not go around. The corner is very dangerous. Vehicles have been forced off the road and one has rolled on that corner.” A development at the top of Massey Rd. will add another 36 residential sections to the approximately 50 residential lots already along this road. Paraire Pirihi (who lives on Pirihi Rd.) said a lot of work has been done by residents to persuade the council to tarseal this road. “It’s less then a kilometre. Why can’t they go ahead and seal it.”There are 12 houses along Pirihi Rd. Most of the time the road is potholed and corrugated and, in the summer, very dusty. “When the wind blows the dust goes all over the houses and the clothes on the clotheslines. Its terrible,” said Heidi Pirihi. Bjorke Troost of McLeans Rd. suffers from Sjorgren’s disease, which leaves her with dry lungs, and the dusty road aggravates the condition. “Every summer its terrible. I say I can’t stand this anymore and threaten to move to Whangarei. We have lived here since 1979 and our property is in four lots so we pay a lot of rates.”Bjorke said she was “devastated” to learn that the proposed sealing of her road is not going ahead. Brian Cowley, who lives on Brooks Rd., said sealing on rural roads should be made an issue for the local government elections in October. He said there are 100 rated properties along Brooks Rd. with more subdivisions underway.“The council is taking a lot of money from us but we are not getting much in return,” he said.

It is readily apparent to me that our community has to-tally dishonest elements within. As I have been on the receiving end of their attention since 2002, to date this is not appreciated.Their efforts so far exceed $100,000.00, latest events have included the theft of my plate compactor at the supposedly secure site at the Power Station. Of course they decided to make things personal when they ripped off my home. This would have required a number of participants as they carried everything away, 2 full 16 cubic foot freezers were emptied. A fair amount of my personal hand tools, a lot that I have had for years and looked after. I do not have a vehicle anymore as this has been sold to pay credit card debt that has been racked up to replace stolen items from the firm.Isn’t the recession bad enough without all this crap.Being disabled and unable to work is hard enough, so why don’t you thieving rat bastards bugger off.

Dishonest elements in ourcommunity

The Waipu Lions Club have completed the re-establish-ment of the initial, major portion of the walking trail between Waipu Cove and Ding Bay , with signage ,col-oured posts and markers. The members wish to thank the coastal property own-ers for their cooperation and consent wishing it to have minimal visual impact. Thanks too, to the Whangarei District Council for support , surveying and materials. Special thanks to Councilor Shelly Deeming for advice and active interest in the project. Also to Mr. A. Lebonte for continuing to permit access across the foot of his coastal property. He has ripar-ian rights. Thanks also to the Residents and Ratepayers Committee, the Bream Bay Forest & Bird ,and Care groups for their active interest. The Trail re-establishes what our early settlers used , before the residential subdivision of the coastal farm lands . Because the Trail is along Esplanade Reserve for 95% of the coast the views and access are now yours to enjoy. You walk the Trail at your own risk. This is because of the irregular terrain and the trail has been marked out with minimal disturbance, of the natural landscape, and minimal signage and formality. Follow the orange marking and signs. Midday in summer months can be demanding on steep sections . In winter boggy and slip-pery ground is a feature of the grazed lands. Good tread on shoes , a water bottle and a stick are wise precau-tions. Choose low tide , so as to enjoy the small beach and rock scramble . High tide alternatives do exist. While you can enter at either end it is suggested that there is an advantage , starting from the southern end - 3 or 4 people and two cars . Park one at Waipu Cove picnic area, and drive the other to the south entrance, Esplanade access strip, opposite Waterman Drive ,on Cove Road .End your trail at Waipu Cove with a swim and ice cream. If you see any litter then pick it up and deposit it in the bins at the Cove.. Pause often and enjoy the views, the interesting rock formations of limestone and native coastal bush and birds. Allow 1 ½ to 2 hours. It is your Coast.

Whilst walking my dogs on Friday evening (28 May) at about 7.30pm I experienced one of the planet’s phe-nomenons - a moonbow! I was walking due west to-wards the highway, the darkness was about 85%, and you could see shower clouds in the sky above the area of Shoemaker Road West. There was a new moon be-hind me and the moonbow was a dirty white or grey in colour and at both ends you could just make out a faint colouring of a normal rainbow. Did anyone experience this phenomenon also? And, no, I was completely so-ber and I have my wife who can verify this experience also.

We did not know what to do. We tried ringing the Civil Defence and Ruakaka Fire brigade. Can we be told about the sirens and what they mean.Maybe an interesting story!

A very expensive sandpit that didn’t cost much

Aidan Davies, aged 9, allowed into the sand-pit at last.

It was an exciting afternoon at Waipu Primary on Friday 4 June when the school’s new adventure sandpit was officially opened and for the first time, the children were allowed to play in it. The sandpit measures 40 metres long and 12 metres wide. It has tunnels, an overbridge and a big basin sunk into it to race toy cars around in. At one end there are limestone rocks and alongside is a landscaped garden with macrocarpa benches to sit on . This is an $80,000 sandpit but it only cost us $5,000 said Paula McLean who oversaw the project. Paula said most of the goods and services were provided free of charge.

Paula McLean in front of the new garden.

Peter Batten, Chairman of the newly formed Ruakaka Economic Group announced at its AGM on Friday 11 June that this group would be “stepping back” from its involvement in the One Tree Point revetment wall.He said the wall as it is now being built was not what had been agreed to with the residents who live along the stretch of One Tree Point Rd.,which the wall is aiming to protect. “I feel for the people who live down there”, he said. Mr. Batten said that the council had carried out a 30 - metre trial building the wall to the direction of the REDGE group but had concluded that it would be too expensive to carry out along the entire length of the cliff face. The group had wanted the wall to be constructed in such a way as to allow at some future date, a concrete walkway to be built along it, similar to one built by the council’s parks department in front of the Paradise Point subdivision or the waterfront walkway in New Plymouth. Mr. Batten said the revetment wall was “a big disappointment.”

OTP revetment wall “a big disappointment.”

Norman Stevens donated the limestone rocks, which stand at one end of the sandpit. Geoff MacDonald picked these up in one of his trucks. Wilsons Earth Moving did all the major excavation work and one of the school’s parents Jen Melia built the bridge. Paula’s father Roly Brown built a punga fence at the back of the garden with 200 punga logs donated by Paul Fletcher. River rocks used in the landscaping came from Sandford’s farm and table maker Carey Hablous built the macrocarpa benches. The support from the community has been “fantastic”, said Paula. “It will be a long time before I can phone anyone up again. I have asked for some pretty big favours.”The sandpit had been fenced off with tape while it was being built and teacher Glenice Andrews said the children had been very respectful of the fact it wasn’t ready to play in yet. Even when she came into the school to do preparation work over the weekend there was no one in the sandpit.

The children have been practising juggling with flaming clubs, swinging fire poi and waiving fire sticks, some of which they will get to show off on the big night along with performers from Dargaville based Kumarani Circus, Michel Panzer from Freiburg/Germany, who circus teacher Achmed Abman says is a “maestro fantastico” on the devil stick and Northland’s own world unicycle champion Christian Huriwai of Kaikohe. Bream Bay College’s Te Roopu Kapahaka O Whanga a Tamure will open the show and the Waipu Highland Pipeband will play at its conclusion. Circool Circus supporters will have a stall selling sausages, props, candy and more, and hot drinks and nibbles, etc. will be available from the Zippy Café. Sponsors are: Northpine, the Whangarei District Council and the Amokura Family Violence Prevention Consortium. A raindate has been set for Sunday 30 at 6pm or check www.circuskumarani.co.nz

Tickets are on sale for this year’s Clachan a Choin Ball, which will be held on Saturday 10 July in the Waipu Coronation Hall.It looks to be pretty much a repeat of last year’s successful event. The band is the same - The Celtic Flyers led by Sean Kelley and featuring ex - Split Enz drummer Paul Crowther.Dress code is a touch or a swatch or even an entire garment of tartan and, if you don’t have anything suitable in your wardrobe, ball sashes can be purchased from The Thistle or you can order a Waipu tartan sash from the museum. The ball aims to cater for all ages with ballroom dancing as well as Celtic/Rock music. A traditional Haggis Ceremony will be piped in by Fraser Sim. A cash bar will operate but all ballgoers will be offered a complimentary glass of wine on arrival and will be provided with supper. Tickets cost $40 and can be purchased from the Waipu Museum from Wednesday to Friday between the hours of 2pm and 5pm. If you can’t get to the museum at these times you can order tickets over the phone – 432 0746. Tables of 12 can be reserved.

They have been on the flying fox down at the One Tree Point adventure camp, taken part in a Zumba dancing session, tried kick - boxing, had facials, learned about relaxation techniques and stood together in The Strand in the middle of Whangarei CBD and sung the National Anthem. They even got paid for the performance. “We put down a hat and we got $2.60”, said Trina Wells, one of eight local women taking part in a one morning a week over three school terms self development course under the enthusiastic tutorage of Sarah Goffin. Last week’s session was a bit more sedate, if no less challenging. Sarah asked the women to come up with

a performance – it could be a piece of drama, a rap song, and a poem to describe their experiences on the course to date. Sarah had a list of what has happened so far on a whiteboard to jog their memories. In addition to the above activities the women have drawn up vision charts, done goal setting exercises, had a session with a careers advisor and another with a budgeting expert. “If you had told me to sing in the middle of town like that on my own I would have told you where to get off. But because of the group we all decided to do it and get it over with”, Amanda Harnett told Sarah. Sarah said the singing session was part of a Mini Amazing Race morning in Whangarei. Other challenges of the morning were to pose as a shop mannequin; she hadn’t let the women know prior to the race what they were in for. “Worrying about doing something can be a hundred times worse that facing your fear and doing it, ” said Sarah. Andrea Bevan– said she found the careers advisor particularly helpful as she had pointed out that the women could use their experiences such as running households and caring for children as qualifications on their curriculum vitae. Francil Tarau had found the budgeting advisor’s talk revealing. He had used the analogy of a golf course and pointed out if you didn’t start saving until after the second hole you would end up with substantially less money. Next term the women will choose a community project they can work on together. They invite suggestions as to what this project could be. “We are not saying this will be the project the women will work on”, said Sarah. “In the end the project we pick will be the women’s decision but it might give them some ideas.” The final term will be helping the women to prepare to move into their future careers whether that be preparing to enter a training course or starting a new business.

A man died when he was hit by a fully loaded logging truck on Port Marsden Highway, just west of The Big Tomato fruit and vegetable shop, at around 9.10am on Thursday 17 June. The road was closed for several hours as Police investigated the scene. The man, in his 50s, had recently moved North from Tauranga to work as a shipping agent. His car was parked on the southern side of the road. Skid marks were visible on the road from where the truck driver had attempted to take evasive action. The truck skidded into the right hand lane. The Whangarei coroner is investigating the accident.

He sits down every afternoon to do a crossword but sometimes the headache is too severe and he has to give it up. It’s frustrating but what is really getting to him are all the thefts he has suffered both from his family home and from his business. “They (the thieves) see all the trucks and think well he’s got some money. They don’t know the reality. I have run out of things to sell.” He sold his car to pay off the credit card debt he had run up buying things to replace what had been stolen. The spa pool sitting on the deck of the home he built for his family off the Port Marsden Highway during the good years, is waiting for a purchaser to come and pick it up. For his family’s sake he would like to be able to at least finish the house but there is no money to spare. Thieves have syphoned diesel out of his trucks, taken truck tyres, tarpaulins, chains, the spade off a digger, parts from a trailer rendering the trailer useless, broken into the company’s office and taken petty cash. “Sure it was only $80 but $80 is $80. His home has been broken into twice and all the meat taken from two freezers. The meat was from a beast raised on his property. “I never had much money in the bank but I was always able to feed my family. They have taken that away from me.”The burglars also took all the tools he had accumulated over his working life. “They took the oilstone box I made when I was 16 at trade school. I had a big collection of tools. Sometimes I think I must be 150 years old I have worked in so many different places. Everywhere I worked I collected specialist tools. They were all in good condition. I looked after them well. They took all those.” Craig is unable to work and family members now run the business for him. “However there were times when they would bring a truck around here for me to work on because I had a special tool. Now I can’t even do that.” Were any of these items insured? Craig said the trouble is things get taken at the depot and no one notices until they are needed. He had a stockpile of new truck tyres (worth $700 each) for example, which all seem to have walked. He also had trouble remembering the extent of his tool collection and his list for the insurance company was incomplete. “I can’t understand the morals of people who would steal from someone like me. I try to think why this is happening. I always tried to be fair. My Dad used to say ‘treat other people the way you would like to be treated yourself,’ that’s a good saying.” “Someone is buying all those stolen items. Someone is receiving. Somebody is benefitting from these actions. Someone knows who these thieves are. Why don’t they ring the cops?”

Why is Craig Lawson so angry?

Seventeen year old Samantha Ellis of the Waipu Surf Lifesaving Club has won the under 19 years Surf Lifeguard title for the Northern Region for 2010. The Northern Region is surf lifesaving’s biggest district with 17 clubs from Raglan north, so Samantha was up against lifeguards from Piha and Muriwai and all the other big Auckland clubs. Samantha was described in her citation as “a very mature and capable 17 year old with a bright future in surf lifesaving. In the 2009/2010 season she performed over 200 volunteer patrolling hours and as Deputy Patrol Captain, she was often called on to step up to cover Patrol Captain duties. She has passed just about every course available to surf lifeguards in her age group including: First Aid to Level 3 or pre - hospital emergency care, the Surf Lifeguard Instructors Award, the IRB crew award, the Patrol Captains’ Course and was nominated “Top Female” at the Intermediate Guard School.Since patrolling finished this year she has also qualified for her IRB drivers award.Within the next few months she plans to do a course in radio communications with the Coastguard and her collection or surf lifesaving awards will be complete. Samantha says surf lifesaving is a real “adrenalin buzz” and she enjoys the camaraderie with the “other clubbies.”“You meet heaps and heaps of people and all the while you are doing something good for the community.” Ian Godfrey, who has been a lifeguard at Waipu Cove for 38 years, received a Distinguished Service Award. Ian joined the Waipu Cove surf club at the age of 14. He has been involved in the club committee for 31 years and represented the club in competitions for 15 years. He was project manager when the clubhouse was built, has been IRB coordinator, junior club captain and, most recently, club president. Ian was a timekeeper and judge for the Northern Region competitions, coached the Surf Lifesaving Representative Team and has received a district service award. The awards were presented at the Northern Region Surf Lifesaving Awards of Excellence in Auckland on Saturday 12 June.

16 - year - old Chris Smith of One Tree Point won his D2 grade at the Auckland Open and Graded Squash championships held in Remuera over the weekend 22and 23 May. Last season Chris began playing competitive squash in the F Grade. He was selected into the Northland junior development squad last year and moved into the D2 grade less than a month before the competition. He had an undefeated weekend of squash, winning the final in five sets to become the Auckland D Grade Champion.

Sixteen - year - old Amy Trigg, a year 12 student at Bream Bay College, will be travelling to Sweden in August where she will spend a year as an American Field Scholar. Amy has been fund - raising for the trip for the past six months, holding sausage sizzles outside Bunnings hardware store in Whangarei, selling chocolates and books and working in the weekends at the Ruakaka Supervalue supermarket. “It’s been hard work but its satisfying to know I have raised the money myself rather then just getting it from my parents” she said.

Amy Trigg - soon to leave for a year in Sweden.

Last month she was just $3000 short of her $17,000 total, which includes $5000 for personal expenditure and $12,000 for airfares and administration costs.Amy became interested in student exchange programmes after a presentation at Bream Bay College last year. However, it was her father who remembered an American Field Scholar attending Whangarei Boys High School when he was a student, who suggested she try this organization. She chose Sweden because of the reputation of that country’s horses, particularly in harness racing. “I’m very into horses”, said Amy who has been helping out at Kenny Rae’s racehorse training stable since she was 12 years old. Amy will be staying with a family in the small town of Tomelilla in the south of Sweden. Her research tells her the town is about the same size as Ruakaka, although a bit colder; its climate is similar to that of Christchurch. Most young people in Sweden speak English, which is taught as a second language in schools, but the majority of older people just speak Swedish. Amy hopes to come back to Bream Bay College fluent in this language. The family she will be staying with keep horses, which Amy is very pleased about. “I was wondering how I was going to spend a whole year without them.”She is both excited and little apprehensive about the upcoming trip. “I’ll be going a way for a whole year in a completely different country.” However she plans to keep in touch via the internet and will be sending regular reports back to her Bream Bay College Sutherland 4 Whanau group.

What a difference the rain has made to our Golf Course. The grass is shooting away and the course is looking great again. This time of the year when other courses are closed due to wet conditions, Waipu is relatively dry underfoot. So here’s hoping we get Green Fee players enjoying our Waipu Course. Whats better when you have played in the rain, than drying off, and enjoying the atmosphere and warm food from the Links Cafe in the Clubhouse.Andy our Club Manager, has introduced “Thrifty Thursdays” for a few weeks, to encourage visitors, when we don’t have a fixture. This will be a $10 green fee to any visiting player, regardless of status, on Thrifty Thursdays. This will not be held on the 24th June as we have our Ladies 27 Hole Winter Four-somes. This is a fun Tournament, so invite your friend along to be your partner, and hopefully you will still be friends at the end of the day, regardless of how many bunkers or bad places you have had to play out of. Remember there are no sorrys’ in Foursomes, just smile and carry on.Dulcie Leech’s mystery Golf Trip, what a day. After an early start we headed south and to many, a real surpise to arrive at RNZAF Whenuapai. What an interesting Golf Course, with planes, or was that 1 plane landing and taking off again. Lots of out of bound markers and big fences, had you holding your breath at times. The locals were a friendly bunch and provided a lovely morning tea and lunch, with the usual friendly Clubhouse banter afterwards. Our bus trip home was fun, with our musician on the guitar and our usual entertainer leading the singing with everyone in full chorus. This is what Club Spirit is about. f 34 Waipu Ladies both 9 and 18 holers joining together and having fun. Thank you Dulcie for all your organisation and for a wonderful day.Our Team of Bronnie Reynolds, Robyn Price, Rita Finlayson and myself, competed in the National Teams Day Regional Final at Whangaroa recently. Waipu had the same score as the winners but lost on a countback. Bronnie and Robyn had a good round and the best nett of the day 65. The neighbouring farmer was moving his cows when they escaped onto the golf course leaving their calling cards, before Bronnie and Robyn played the back nine. Could only happen in Northland. Congratulations to Jo Wech for beig selected in the Northland Team to play against Auckland at Mangawhai later this month. Good golfing Jo.27.5.10 LGU Palmer Cup32 of us started the day but the weather closed in and only 7 brave Ladies finished their 18 Holes. Winners for the day were Catherine Jenkins 37 Stb, Carolyn Rouse (Pines) 35, Mar-ilyn Ralph (Pines) 34, Judy Sloane 33, Raewyn Nash 33, Helen Wheldon 31 and Frances Waru 31. Frances had the only 2 of the day.The Pennants rounds are nearing the end and we are watching the last games with interest. Our Weekend Ladies are in the lead with 2 rounds to go and one of our 18 Hole Teams is well placed, with the final round to be played at Waipu on 28 June. Good Golfing Ladies

We are in to the middle of the season and all three senior teams are doing well. The men’s 1st Division, although drawing a couple of matches are still holding the top of the league table. The anticipated challenge from Kaeo has dropped away and second place Marist is the team we need to keep an eye on and make sure we beat to extend or maintain our lead. If the team continues to play solid uncomplicated football they should carry on to take the 1st Div league this season. The 2nd Division started well but has dropped a couple of matches and now sit 4th on the table. They did draw with the top team and have beaten the team directly above on the table Northern Wairoa from Dargaville. Another win against NW will see us leap frog over them. They have struggled sometimes to field a full strength team and Callum Harnett from the youth 15th grade and Sami Jo Dodunski from the women’s team have filled in to help on the odd occasion. A top three place in the league is still achievable and a goal for the rest of the season. The women’s 1st Div team have had two wins recently against FC Whangarei and a 5-0 win against bottom placed Central Brown including a three goal hat trick for Erica Poa. This has put us 4th on the table and if we can keep improving and play steady football we could achieve more wins and possibly move another place ahead on the table. We have to try and beat Northern Wairoa women and if we play well in front and on defense this is not impossible. A welcome back to our goalkeeper Helen Robinson who has been away for a month adds some stability to our defense. The women have a big ask when they take on Kamo women’s premier team in the women’s all-in knockout competition. Kamo are the top women’s team playing in Northland and play in the Premier women’s league. Both men’s teams have got through their first round matches in their respective knockout competitions. The 1st Div men’s next KO game is against Kamo Premier Reserve team, playing in a Division above us and the 2nd Division have a 2nd round bye.

It was hard to find a space in the carpark of the Ruakaka Hall last Friday afternoon when the Marsden Bay Garden Club Flower Show was in full swing. Gardening enthusiasts and rest home residents came from Dargaville, Whangarei, Wellsford and Snells Beach to view the displays. The hall had an amazing display of floral arrangements, despite the weather conditions over the past few months. Club members very generously supply all the produce for the produce stall and food for our kitchen café. They also, with members of the community supply the marvellous array of floral entries that fill the hall. The decorative classes with theme titles of: Space Age, Surf and Turf, Grand Entrance, Shades of Orient and A Floral Handbag were outstanding. Several craft stalls helped with the ambience. A white elephant stall proved very popular also. Trophy winners were: Supreme Award – The Charmo Trophy won by Elaine Mitchell, Best in Show – Decorative – ATCO Trophy won by Lyn Smith. President’s choice (Win and Joan nee Florance Memorial Trophy) won by Tracee Wortelboer. Novice Decorative – Judy Fraser. Most Entries Georgie Gardner Memorial Cup – Alice Judd. Missy Hill of Ruakaka has taken over Grandma’s Place, the bright yellow gift and souvenir shop alongside the SH1/One Tree Point Rd. roundabout. It was a gift from her husband. “He has been really nice to me lately, He bought me a car for my 40th birthday. Missy said she has always wanted to own a shop but just wasn’t sure what kind. She thinks the business will be good for

her girls ( she has four daughters) helping them to become more self-confident. She also qualifies as a grandma with two grandsons. Missy has lived in Ruakaka for 26 years and worked at the refinery as a cleaner and then in the refinery cafeteria before taking on a job at the Gas Alley Petrol station nextdoor to her new shop. She has painted two of the interior walls of her new shop crimson to give a warm feeling and has a few ideas of how she would like the business to develop but will take things slowly. “I’m new at this. It’s going to be a big adventure and one I am very excited about.”

The big safe has been moved out of what used to be the Waipu Money Exchange in the Waipu town centre and a new business has moved in. It’s called Coastline Holiday Rent-als and Property Management and is the brainchild of Sandy McKenzie and Pam Crawley. Sandy, who is a real estate agent, working primarily in Waipu and Langs Beach, found that managing property rentals has become part of her job. She explained that rates on Langs Beach properties are very high and many of her real estate clients were retired elder-ly people sometimes widowed, who have placed the property on the market but need to rent

it out to gain income until a sale is made. She mentioned to Pam Crawley how busy she had become. Pam had worked in real estate in the United Kingdom. So the new business was born. Coastline Holiday Rentals matches people looking for holiday accommodation with houses available for rent. Sandy said there are so many people looking for rentals, particularly over busy holi-day times, that they can vet tenants carefully. They conduct an inspection prior to the tenants moving in and another after they move out and ask homeowners to meet a list of requirements – light bulbs all work-ing etc. Pam and Sandy are working on a dossier of information helpful to people who might come here on holiday. Pam – “We will include menus from local restaurants, tell people where they can go for a massage or for a nice bottle of bubbly.” For holiday homeowners they also offer a property management service. Pam –“We can go in and put the vacuum around, open the windows and mow the lawns for people before they come up for the weekend. Then when they get here they can relax.”They have also compiled lists of trades people who they can call in to do repairs if these are requested. Sandy –“We want to keep this local, providing work for local people.”

Sandy McKenzie and Pam Crawley.

Friends and fellow conservationists of John Kendrick of Waipu are invited to the Waipu RSA on thursday 1 July at 5.30pm to celebrate John’s Queens Service Medal announced in this year’s Queens Birthday Honours list. Eighty eight year old John has lived in Waipu for the past six years and in that time has planted up his garden with a variety of, mostly native, plants with the design of attracting birds. Along one boundary fence is a row of the pink flowering lupin - virgilla to attract rosellas.“The rosellas seem to chew the flowers up for the nectar”, John says,Along another there is a variety of trees banksia, puriri, manuka, kaikatea (hopefully a male and female so there will be berries). Cabbage trees are planted in strategic corners. John explains that birds like to land on something high while they survey the scene before flying down into the garden. He has compiled a list of 42 species of birds observed at his property. He was thrilled last week when a native pigeon discovered the puriri and guava trees he had planted with pigeons in mind. “He will be back. Pigeons have good memories especially when it comes to food.” “Birds share this world with us” , he is fond of saying. . John is perhaps best known for his recordings of New Zealand bird songs, which are played each morning at 9am on National Radio. His extensive recordings of just about every New Zealand bird both native and introduced are now held at both the Alexander Turnbill and the British Libraries. “It’s a good idea to spread these things around”, he says. Last year he was contacted by a representative of the British Library and asked what in his opinion was the most appropriate birdsong of the New Zealand bush to be considered for a commercial CD of the 40 most beautiful bird songs in the world. John nominiated the kokako, pointing out that the library already had a recording of a male kokako in full voice in a collection he had earlier gifted to it. This recording was included on the CD, which John says is a nice piece of recognition for New Zealand. John spent 18 years working for the New Zealand Wildlife Service where, as well as creating a natural sound library and photographing most native bird species he also filmed and recorded sound for a series of 10 films on wildlife subjects for the television programme

Looking at New Zealand and made a number of other films, including one on a scientific expedition to the remote Adams Island (in the Auckland Group). In 1974 he was granted a Winston Churchill Scholarship which took him to the Unitied Kingdom where he worked with the BBC Natural History Unit at Bristol for four months studying natural history film making. He also spent time studying at the Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University in the USA.John has tramped to most of the remote parts of New Zealand. One of his most memorable adventures was a crossing of the Raukumara Range (north of Gisborne near East Cape) made in 1961 with five companions. At that time possums and deer hadn’t invaded and the bush was pristine. He has recorded the song of the South Island kokako, which many believe is now extinct. He is one of the few people alive to have ever heard the call of the piopio – the native thrush and is on record as making the final sighting of the North Island wren in January 1956. His recordings of North Island saddleback out on Taranga island (the Hen in the Hen and Chicken group) were essential to the capture and transfer programme which saw populations established on nine offshore island and lifted this species from the verge of extinction. John attributes all that tramping over rugged country carrying heavy recording equipment (along with good genes) to his amazing continued fitness. If you go for a bush walk with him you will be running to keep up with his long stride. As he walks he keeps up a commentary on the natural wonders all around. He is also an expert botanist. A friend Greg Stump said, “John will say, ‘ The name of this plant is ………. but it used to be ………’ giving you both a former and current Latin name. I say, ‘Just give me the Maori name for it John, then I might have a chance of remembering it. “ John is still actively involved in conservation. He is a member of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection and last year received the society’s highest recognition – its Old Blue Award. He has been a member of the New Zealand Ornithological Society for over 45 years and is a life member of the Wellington Botanical Society. He has given many talks and provided guided walks for local groups such as the Waipu Lions, The Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust and the Forest and Bird Society. He is a Trustee for the Bream Head Restoration Trust and is a member of the Limestone Island Trust.
