The reefer (refrigerated) ship Capihue arrived on Tuesday 16 October and butter was loaded in 25 kg cartons on pallets from the Northport cold store. The shipment is bound for Iran. This is the first shipment of butter from Northland for 14 years. The bulk of the region’s refrigerated dairy produce is exported in containers through the Port of Auckland. Labour Day should be about honouring the workersIt’s Labour Day and I’m working. Megan, who makes up Bream Bay News adverts is working, and the printer I will be sending this fortnightly issue of the Bream Bay News to at 7pm this evening is also working. I have just watched a cattle truck drive down Applecross Rd. and I note from the Northport website there are three log ships in port. Labour Day is supposed to be a celebration of the forty - hour working week but how many employed people follow the nine to five, Monday to Friday routine? The concept got lost somewhere. I think Labour Day should be about honouring the workers. The phrase “an honest days work” should be brought back into vogue. Whatever your job is if you are skilled and work hard and honestly you should be proud. We need to look after the workers amongst us and make sure that, no matter how dedicated they are, they are able take time out for themselves and their families. This also is what Labour Day should be about. It’s been a busy old Labour weekend and the weather, for once, hasn’t been too bad. Saturday was a glorious day and I was privileged to be at the opening of the new Tanekaha Track, which gives public access into the Brynderwyn Forest. The track was built by a team of volunteers who described themselves self depreciatingly in a press release as a group of “broken down old trackies.’ I’m not fooled and recognise that the achievement of this trail has taken some skilled negotiation, hard work, appreciation of the values of New Zealand native forest and dedication to the ideals of public rights of access on to public land. Those of us who enjoy walking in the bush are grateful for this effort.

CORRECTION In the 4 October issue of the Bream Bay News we described Alex Gordon’s ribbon winning calf Fred as the “champion calf” at the Waipu Primary Calf Club day held on Sat-urday 22 September. The overall champion was, in fact, seven - year - old Sinead Gordon’s Jersey heifer calf Missey, pictured above.

-Northland’s projected “wall of wood.” The port was opened in 2002 by Prime Minister Helen Clark. It currently has three berths (570 metres of berth face) with resource consent for a fourth. “Contrary to what you may have heard on the radio we are not about to start building the fourth berth next week”, said Mr. Moore He said the new berth to the east would be built when cargo volumes make it viable. He also said there is the potential to continue the port development east towards the New Zealand Refining Company jetties – an additional four berths. He told the guests how 2 years ago the port reached a point where it had no further log storage available. “We were chocker”, he said. Since then the area of paved storage for logs has been increased so that now there is 14.2 hectares for this purpose. An eight truck covered scaling bay and a 32 truck and trailer queuing bay has also been built. “If you think there are a lot of log trucks on the road you are right,” said Mr. Moore. The estimated total number of truck visits for this year is 106,026, so an average of 290 trucks arriving each day. The port’s current export cargoes are made up of logs heading to China, India and Korea, woodchip to Japan, LVL (laminated veneer lumber from the Ruakaka plant)

to Australia, triboard and veneer from JNL Kaitaia for Japan and the Philippines. Concrete railway sleepers from the Busck concrete plant in Whangarei for Tasmania and kiwifruit to Japan and Europe. Import cargoes are fertilisers from North Africa, palm kernel (used as cattle feed) from South East Asia, molasses (fed to stock) from The Phillipines, gypsum from Thevenard in South Australia and coal from Indonesia. Colin Mitten – chairman of the Northland Port Corporation said Mr. Moore was “very astute, a very good port operator and a big driver of the port’s success.”He said the port was a “jewel in Northland’s crown.” Phil Halse congratulated Northport on its success before National Government minister and Member of Parliament for Whangarei Phil Heatley took the floor. Referring to the lack of progress on the proposed railway line from Oakleigh to the Marsden Point port he said, “A railway line can be built in five months – the time consuming work is already done with the designating and acquiring of land. In 2009, in order to move the project forward and to give landowners certainty about where the line would go the Northland Regional Council began the process of designating land for the Oakleigh to Marsden Point rail corridor. The designation of the route has been completed and some but not all the properties en route have been purchased. Mr. Heatley said, “After what has happened in Gisborne, people might be worried about the future of Northland railway line. But the rail line is an essential piece of infrastructure in our area. “As the local Member of Parliament I have no concerns at all that it will be closed but our difficulty is it takes three hours by train and two hours by truck and truck is door to door.”Early this month Kiwirail announced it would be shutting down the Gisborne to Napier railway line, which was damaged by floods in March. “The Puhoi motorway is also very important. People have said to me we should forget about the highway extension (which will cost $1.7 billion) and just concentrate on the railway line upgrade. But we can have both.” Mr Heatley said he enjoyed telling the “greenies” in parliament that he has seen dolphins guiding oil tankers into Marsden Point. “The greenies hate that, they ask me for a photo. I am saying to you please don’t hit one. That would be the end for me.”

To the person who stole the flower heads from the Poor Knight’s Lily, growing in Marsden Yacht and Boat Clubs front garden - shame on you! These flowers are grown for all to enjoy, not just for you. Jean DanielRuakaka

To the person who stole the flowers

Our family would like to publicly acknowledge the great works that Phil and his fellow workers from Bream Bay Community Support Trust do in the com-munity. We recently had need of their help. Their dedication, professionalism, advice and understanding was second to none. We didn’t realise the extent of their work, and when questioned of this, Phil replied with, “We don’t shout from the rooftops about what we do, we just do it.” We can’t speak highly enough of their value to this community. Thank you one and all.

A public acknowledgement

No need to apologise for the truthI am writing in response to the reply by Margaret Hicks. Today is Saturday 6 October and already I have received 28 phone calls thanking me for pointing out some home truths about Margaret Hicks. I had seven calls before I even got the paper. Of the 28 phone calls, one was from the native bird recovery centre, thanking me for my words. They didn’t have many nice things to say about the birds’ saviour. The rest of the calls so far have been to thank me for raising the cat issue and of those seven claimed to see Mrs Hicks feeding the strays at 10 o’clock each night.Margaret seems to struggle with terminology it would seem. A cat that has been “abandoned” and no longer living at a property with a family is the actual descrip-tion of a feral cat. Bandying terms around to cover feeding ferals is an absolute deceit on her part. As far as location is concerned, the end of Tamure Place and it’s surrounds are clearly so close to the racecourse that it doesn’t matter. Why would I want to offer an apology when every-thing I have written is the truth? In fact it is the people of Ruakaka and the endangered birds who deserve an apology from her. Good on the SPCA for trying to help you Margaret, their mission is to look after all animals, regardless of the threat they pose to native wildlife. If these feral cats are caught and euthanased then the SPCA have saved another native bird. For someone who frequently mounts her soapbox on wildlife issues, you should be ashamed of your actions, which are both ill conceived and in total disregard for the bird life. This is not a personal attack, just a frustrated local, sick and tired of ill informed, so called self qualified experts making things worse. As far as my volunteering, I have done plenty over the years, from teaching bushcraft skills to scouts, to help-ing John Stowers establish a local Civil Defence Force. I certainly don’t need to be told by you to join DOC. Finally, isn’t it interesting that you can go feral feeding at 10o’clock at night, when you had to have the cur-tains to block out the lights from the college that were turned off at 8pm nightly. I’m sure we all assumed that you must go to bed early. Another deceptive complaint perhaps? Glen Mitchell,Waipu.

The Whangarei District Council is preparing to discharge treated wastewater from the Ruakaka wastewater treatment plant as irrigation on to a portion of a 50 - acre block of Council owned land in Rama Rd., near the LVL plant. Fraser Campbell, the council’s consultant engineer managing the Ruakaka wastewater project, said the $9.4 million project underway connecting the Ruakaka south area, including the Ruakaka Beach Holiday Park to the Ruakaka sewer system was a “key driver” for this development. A new pump station will be installed at the treatment plant and a rising main built to the Rama Rd. block. The wastewater will go through a series of sprinklers (a K Line irrigation system commonly used by farmers for irrigation) on to pasture land. The land is leased to a dairy farmer who uses it to graze replacement stock. Construction work is expected to begin before Christmas and the new treatment field to be commissioned in March next year. The Council purchased the Rama Rd. land from Rio Tinto in 2009 with this purpose in mind. Resource consents for this disposal, along with a raft of other disposal options (including an ocean outfall into Bream Bay) were granted by the Northland Regional Council in May this year. As per resource consent conditions for the Rama Rd option, a series of monitored bore holes on the seaward side of the disposal field will be installed. Mr Campbell said a line of bore holes already in place around the

treatment plant will be extended all the way to the LVL Plant. Another condition of the consent is that a community liaison group be set up with a representative from: (subject to their agreement) Patuharakeke Te Iwi Trust Board (Inc) (PTB), The Bream Bay Land Owners Association (BBLOA), The Ruakaka Parish Residents and Ratepayers Association, The Ruakaka Economic Development Group, The Ruakaka Surf Club, Bream Bay Action Group, The Save our Harbour Collective, The Bream Bay Coastal Care Trust, The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of NZ, the operator of the Bream Bay Aquaculture Park, OceaNZ Blue NZ, Mighty River Power, the Northland Medical Officer of Health, the Department of Conservation, the Whangarei Fisherman’s Association/Leigh Commercial Fisherman’s Association and the Northland Scallop Enhancement Company. Invitations have been sent out to all these organizations to nominate a date within the next few weeks for an initial meeting. Mr. Campbell said this extension of the treatment plant is likely to meet the projected demand of the Ruakaka/ One Tree Point area over the next few years.

I was taken aback by the letter in the Bream Bay News from Warren Daniel, Secretary of the Ruakaka Parish Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc. regarding the application for removal of 2.56 hectares of man-groves in the Ruakaka Wildlife Refuge. It was a vi-cious and personal attack on Margaret Hicks, almost to the point of paranoia. The letter is rather mischievous too, since anyone at the hearing would know why Margaret was unable to be at the start of the meeting, since she explained and apologized when she arrived. I was there for all of the hearing, so you can’t pull the wool over my eyes. You will also know as I do, that the Dept. of Conserva-tion are not required to be present or put in a submis-sion at the time of the hearing. Their role is to either approve/ or not approve the Resource Consent after it has been issued. It also needs clarifying, that neither Bream Bay Coastal Care, nor the local Forest and Bird were approached for advice before the request for the removal of the man-groves was applied for. Both Bream Bay Coastal Care and New Zealand Forest and Bird are against unneces-sary disturbance of wildlife in a Wildlife Refuge. The New Zealand Forest and Bird did make a submission, and they were opposed to removal of mangroves.I was impressed that you have done so much research on information about mangroves, salt marsh and banded rail. You will be aware then, that the endemic banded rail (Rallus philippensis), known to be pres-ent in the mangroves, has been identified as an at risk species in New Zealand. Mangroves are crucial for banded rail, which have all but disappeared from the inland wetlands they used to inhabit throughout New Zealand (mainly because of introduced stoats and fer-

rets). Around 95 % of all banded rail in New Zealand are now found in mangroves in the Northern harbours. Any removal of mangroves will disturb the birds, since they are highly territorial, regardless of when and how it is achieved. Chainsaws are still chainsaws, even when they are called “motorised tools”.Also at the hearing, your own Expert Witness said that clearing the mangroves is no guarantee that saltmarsh will replace it. In the August issue of the Royal Forest and Bird magazine, mangroves are discussed at length if any of your members of RPRRA wish to learn more about this valuable part of the ecosystem. The man-grove has been in New Zealand for 19 million years, but the extent of the spread of mangroves is only in re-cent decades. Perhaps we need to examine what we are doing? Perhaps we should be dealing with the causes, not the effects? It was gratifying that the NRC has only given consent to mangrove removal within existing rush-dominated or sea meadow salt marsh communi-ties (the stated purpose of the RPRRA application).I am so pleased that the RPRRA is taking so much in-terest in conservation. Hopefully we will see you and some of the other members at our working bees each month. You could actively help us protect and enhance our coastal habitats, monitor and protect threatened species- plants, animals or birds, replant and possibly fence off areas of important native vegetation. The working bees are usually on the third Sunday in each month and are always advertised in the Bream Bay News.

Book Fair raises $5,000 The giant book fair held in the Waipu Coronation Hall over Labour weekend raised approximately $5,000 for the hall’s maintenance fund. Organiser Neil McLeod estimates over 8,000 books were collected which were spread out on tables in boxes in the hall for the sale. A good number of these remain unsold and Neil said the hall committee is considering holding another sale in January when the summer holiday crowds arrive. In the meantime the left over books can be stored at the back of or under the stage. Neil said he would like to acknowledge all those who helped with the book fair. “It was a good effort. A good example of the community helping itself.”

Right, Dorothy Fenton of Northcote, Auckland finds a book she likes the look of at the Labour weekend Waipu giant book fair.

Waka for the Grand Pageant

Paddy Whiu shows the Waipu visitors the two waka built from kauri trees taken from Puketi forest. Mr. Whiu said only dying kauri were taken for the purpose. He said after the first was completed “we felt a bit sorry for our women as this was a waka toa, which can only be rowed by men, so we built another, a waka teitei which women can row. Looking on are (from left) Ha-kopu Adams, whose grandfather carved the waka, Ciano Rudolph, Graham Goodall (of Waipu), partly obscured, Greg Smith (of Waipu), and pageant director Lachie McLean dubbed Lachie Jackson by Mr. Whiu.

“Would you like one waka or two?” asked Paddy Whiu, of Te Tangata Marae of Whangaroa when representatives of the Waipu Museum requested the presence of a waka at the Waipu Grand Pageant. Pageant director Lachie McLean said two would obviously have a greater dramatic effect and if it were possible to send both that would be “wonderful.” The waka crew and its supporters were invited to stay at Patuharakeke Marae but said they would like to remain alongside their waka, which would be moored at the Waipu Boat Club. Whether or not a second waka could be brought to Waipu would depend on how many people can be accommodated at the boat club. Mr. Whiu invited Patuharakeke to nominate “one of your sons and one of your daughters to sit with our children as they paddle up your rivers.” He made arrangements with Paturharakeke representatives for the waka to pay a visit to the Takahiwai Marae on their first arrival in Bream Bay. The waka toa, which is named Te Aukaha took part in the first Waipu Pageant in 2003. Mr. Whiu said the Whangaroa people considered it important to teach their young people about their history and traditions and therefore respected and understood the aim of the Waipu Nova Scotian migration descendants to do the same for their children. The Bream Bay delegation was hosted to a hangi meal by the marae. “We heard you coming” said Hiria Hora, referring to Fraser Sim’s bagpipes, which led the Bream Bay visitors onto the marae. “It made us get a hurry on” .

New walking track gives accessinto the Brynderwyn forest

A new walking track, which provides public access up on to the Brynderwyn ridge was officially opened on Saturday afternoon, 21 October. The Tanekaha Track was built by a team of volunteers from the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust. The road into the track is 3 km up King Road (off Cove Road) on the right just beyond the second bridge. A parking area has been constructed 100 meters up this access and no vehicles are permitted past this point. The track, marked by blue and silver markers, follows the road to a style, which leads on to private land owned by Marunui Conservation Ltd. A swing - bridge across the stream was funded by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission. From the bridge the track crosses a second stream by stepping stones and briefly proceeds upstream before climbing towards the ridge and into the Department of Conservation reserve. Steeper sections have been stepped and slopes benched but once on the ridge the grade lessens with just a few steeper climbs. The track passes through regenerating forest dominated by tanekaha at lower elevations and large very old kanuka higher up. There are scattered rimu, totara, and puriri, as well as nikau palms, lancewood and a variety of shrub hardwoods, along with lots of seedlings and saplings along the route. Glimpses of Mangawhai Harbour and the surrounding area occur along the track but the real views are from the top when the track reaches the trig. Depending on walking pace it takes from one to one and a half hours to reach the top. The track was blessed by Ben de Thierry of Te Uri o Hau who said he was happy to give his support as it was te huanui ki te ora (a pathway to health.) It was opened by acting Conservator for Northland Alistair Drake, who commended the Mangawhai trust for building the track. He said the Department of Conservation had suffered severe funding cuts in recent years and more cuts are due next year. “The only way we can manage these changes and do more with less is when communities do things for themselves.” John Gardner, of the Walking Access Commission, said he had joined in on one of the working bees and found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. “About 12 people turned up and the work was done in a couple of hours then we all sat down to a good long smoko with scones and pikelets and everyone having a good time ribbing one another.” Doctor Gordon Hosking of the Mangawhai Tracks Trust said the track was built with the full support of farmer Mike Gash, whose land is traversed by a legal unformed

“We do it simpler”

Constable Martin Geddes wants to recruit more volunteers for the Bream Bay patrol group he set up several months ago. He is looking for people aged 16 years and over and says “generally age is no barrier as one of the main principles of Community Patrol New Zealand is that it is non confrontational.”The group has been asked by the Whangarei District Council if it can help with a new initiative called Summer Safe Carparks, which it plans to run from 1 December through to April and more volunteers are needed to carry out this mission. The Council is offering the sum of $2,500, which will go towards the patrol group’s expenses. Dave Palmer, Community Safety Officer

The Bream Bay Police are handing out plastic bags of leaflets which Sergeant David Hamilton, Officer in Charge in Bream Bay says will “reduce crime and repeat vicitimisation” in Bream Bay. The bags contain, along with stickers and a cardboard pop out models of a police car, information on burglary prevention, rural crime prevention, how to help people in violent family situations, methamphetamine, neighbourhood watch and an introduction to the SNAP project where you can record serial numbers or identifying details of your goods online.Sergeant Hamilton says, “Police are moving into crime prevention and placing victims as our main focus and central to what we do. The packages provide some useful advice about keeping ourselves and our possessions

What’s going on here?Quite a few people have come in to ask”, said Claire Wilkinson of the Clansman Motel on Cove Rd at the eastern entrance to Waipu town. Claire and Peter Fischer, the motel’s owners, are erecting a large gazebo near the motel’s Cove Road boundary. “It will be a lovely cool place to sit in the summer. Pete is already growing hundreds of plants to put inside it, lots of petunia. He’s a petunia man”, said Claire. Someone, and Peter and Claire say they know who it is, phoned the Whangarei District Council because he or she thought the building was going up without a required permit. A council inspector came out but decided not to take any action as he said a gazebo, even one of this size, does not need a permit. “We knew that as we phoned the Council before we started building”, said Claire. “You get tired of the small mindedness of some people. The gazebo will be covered in plants. It will look much better than the clotheslines that

were there before.” The sign, aimed at the person who made the complaint, was put up by Peter.

with the Whangarei District Council, said he has asked Constable Geddes for feedback of incidences of thefts in Bream Bay’s public carparks. Constable Geddes said the group is already patrolling and showing effectiveness as a crime prevention tool.“The more numbers we have committed to the group the more effective we can become.”The hours of patrolling are flexible and tailored to what each individual is able to contribute.

If people want to find out more they can go online and visit the Police website where it has an area specifically dedicated to Crime Prevention advice. The packages are available at the local Police stations at Waipu, Ruakaka and Maungaturoto. Packages are also available at the Bream Bay Community Trust.Sergeant Hamilton said, “My aim is to have as many of these packages distributed throughout our district, so we can all work towards a safer Bream Bay” said Sergeant Hamilton. “Our Bream Bay police officers are committed to keeping our area safe for all, especially our visitors who come north to enjoy our beaches and friendly hospitality, and we want them to keep coming back.”

Who wants to be a Bream Bay St. John youth cadet?

St. John District youth manager Ingrid McLennan and pen-guin mascot publicising the proposed new Bream Bay St. John Youth Division at the Marsden Cove Sunday Market.

Northland’s St John District Youth Manager Ingrid McLen-nan brought some of her young cadets as well as a penguin to the Marsden Cove Sunday Market (on Sunday 21 October) to advertise a proposed Bream Bay St. John youth division. The Bream Bay St. John Area Committee is looking for adults who can become leaders as well as children who might like to join up. The cadets will meet weekly at the Bream Bay St. Johns station in Ruakaka and will be divided into those aged 6 – 8 years (the Penguins) and Cadets from 8 to 18 years. They will study to achieve a set of 27 badges with the final goal The Grand Prior Badge, which is presented to a select number of St. John cadets each year by the Governor General in Govern-ment House, Wellington. Tri - annual School board of trustee elections will be held next May and the Board of Trustee Association is urging current boards to start thinking about their succession plans.A memo on the association’s website urges boards to “identify the variety of relevant skills, experience and behaviours required of trustees on your board?School boards are usually made up of three to five elected parent representatives, the school principal, an elected staff representative, in the case of schools with

students above year nine - an elected student representative and, in some cases, co-opted trustees. Parents or caregivers of children attending a school are eligible to vote for parent representatives who do not themselves need to have a child at the school. Adrian Smith, the Principal of One Tree Point Primary said, “People think it’s a very high powered situation and a huge amount of

knowledge is needed but 90% of what goes on at the board meetings is just good common sense stuff. Board members need to have good common sense and care about the kids in the school.” Graham Hargreaves, Chairman of the Bream Bay College board said he enjoys the role because it allows him to be involved in his children’s education. You get to know and understand about what goes on behind the scenes. There is a lot that goes on that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.” Fiona Heiwari, chairwoman of the One Tree Point school board said, people who put their names forward for election to school boards should be fair and open minded and open to different perspectives. They should be prepared to represent the parent body and to follow due process. “It can be beneficial. You learn a lot about the way the education system works in our community and in our society.” Nominations for candidates for the 2013 board of trustee elections will be called next March. More Information about who is eligible for board of trustee positions can be found on the Boards of Trustees section of the Ministry of Education website.

The Bream Bay College PTA (Parent Teachers Association) has been overwhelmed by the support it has received from Bream Bay’s business community for its annual fundraising event – The Tides Out Fun Run. The Fun Run sub committee set out to raise $1,000 in sponsorship to cover expenses but has ended up with $1,950 and the PTA has decided to use some of this money to buy an IPad 2 to offer as a spot prize to entice college students to take part in the event. Other major spot prizes include: a pair of running shoes from Smiths Shoes which will be handed out as an early bird prize, a skateboard from the Whangarei skate shop Inferno, a voucher for dinner for two at the Waipu restaurant L’Amour de Kasbah, a voucher for dinner at the Pizza Barn and a place on a fishing trip on board the newly built catamaran Spot On of Marsden Cove Fishing Charters. road leading into the forest. Mr. Gash built fences to separate off the road access. The Maranui landowners also supported the project in allowing access across their land. Dr. Hosking said there are further plans to extend the track so it becomes a longer loop walk. He has been told by pig hunters that there are two waterfalls in the forest and he had been attempting to locate these so detours can be built to view them. The Brynderwyn forest comprises 15 square kilometers of native forest, shrublands, streams and wetlands. Members of the newly formed The Friends of the Brynderwyns Society were at the track opening ceremony handing out leaflets and inviting new membership. The society has plans to reintroduce Northland brown kiwi to the forest. Contacts are: Martina Tschirky 09 431 5161, Catherine Hawley 09 376 4069 and Denis Kerins 09 376 4551.

Donna and Gwithian Davies of One Tree Point got up at 1am on Monday 15 October to watch their daughter and granddaughter Mary win the Toronto Marathon. Mary’s time of 2:28:57 slashed almost 10 minutes off her previous best time and is the fourth fastest marathon ever run by a New Zealand woman. Donna said her own health has not been too good recently but Mary’s triumph has helped to make her feel better. “It was very exciting. We watched her pass that other girl – just two kilometres from the finish.” Mary finished almost a minute in front of second place getter, Kenyan Agnes Kiprop. Mary now lives in Ottawa, Canada with her husband Gabriel Sawakuchi and 15 - month old son Lucas, but the family had been back to visit Gwithian and Donna in One Tree Point last summer while she trained for the Paris marathon. Mary was aiming to qualify at this

event for the London Olympics but her hopes were dashed when she developed a hip injury. “It was terrible, really disappointing for her”, said Donna. Mary is a former student of Bream Bay College. As a school girl she played hockey and it was her hockey coach, Cathy Watkins who put her in touch with Whangarei running guru Ian Babe. After impressing selectors at the junior World Cross Country championships Mary won a scholarship to enter the University of Oklahoma’s athletics programme. It was here she met Gabriel who is a physics professor at

Runner from One Tree Point wins the Toronto Marathon

the University of Carleton where he is researching ways of improving radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer. He is supportive of Mary’s running career, accompanying her on a bicycle on her long training runs with baby Lucas sleeping behind him strapped into a child seat. For the past two years Mary has returned once more to the coaching advice of Mr. Babe. They keep in touch using Skype and email. On her blog she wrote in detail about the race. “Kilometres 37 to 39 were hardest and I really had to concentrate on trying not to feel the pain. Just after 39 kilometres there was an overpass (bridge), which at this point in the race seemed like a huge hill. After I got to the top of hill I could see the first placed lady Agnes Kiprop up ahead which gave me the adrenalin that I desperately needed to keep going. I went as fast as I could downhill and kept her as my focus. I caught

up to Kiprop just over 41 kilometres and went as fast as I could past her. I have definitely never worked that hard in a race before and still had one kilometre to run. I was running on adrenaline by this point. I went through 40 kilometres in 2:21.12. ….. I pushed as hard as my body would allow and kept checking over my shoulder to see if Kiprop was close. It was such a relief to see the ‘400m to go’ sign and now my focus was the finish line! Those last 400 metres were very emotional and it was such an amazing atmosphere. The crowd was cheering so loudly and I could see the finish line tape, which I could not believe I was going to be running through. Running through the tape knowing I had won the Toronto marathon and had run nearly a ten - minute personal best of 2:28.56 was a very surreal feeling and the best moment in my running career!Mary is hoping that her time in the Toronto marathon will be enough to qualify her to represent New Zealand in the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow in August. Kimberley Smith who ran 2:25.21 in the London Marathon in 2010 holds the New Zealand women’s marathon record.
