Citation R. V. HANSBERGER
Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa
As the nation expands, the need for conservation and prudent utilization of
nature's resources grows and a premium is placed on men who can reshape
existing economic enterprises to better serve the contemporary needs of their society.
R. V. Hansberger, young, dynamic, creative, is a corporation executive who
has revitalized a segment of an industry significant to the economy of the
Western United States and broadened its contribution to the material well-being
of our citizens. He is an articulate spokesman for the economic system he so ably represents.
In 1957, when Mr. Hansberger became president of his company, it was
concerned solely with the manufacture and distribution of lumber and building products. Today, it is a broadly diversified operation, spread over eight Western
states and producing an expanding line of products having their origins in the
forest and mining resources of the West.
The lumber baron of a bygone era ravaged our forests and left the land
denuded and worthless. In a new time, responsible corporations, such as that
directed by Mr. Hansberger, operate their timber holdings on a sustained yield
basis, insuring their use by future generations and guarding against flood and erosion.
Mr. Hansberger has furthered research and development which have led
to the creation of whole new industries. Today, paper, textiles and a variety
of goods are manufactured from what was formerly waste.
In addition to his leadership in expanding the economic base of the North-west, Mr. Hansberger serves his community and society through active partici-
pation in a wide range of civic, cultural and educational affairs.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota with distinction in engineering
and later a member of the faculty there, a graduate of Harvard University with
high distinction in business administration, he has consistently demonstrated an
interest in the liberal studies and humanities. He is a trustee of the famed
Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, an overseer of Whitman College and
a member of the board of Pacific University.
The range of his interests is reflected in other responsible positions which
he holds both in commerce and civic affairs. He is a director of three additional
companies; a trustee of St. Luke's Hospital, Boise; president of the Boise Art
Association; past director of the Idaho State Chamber of Commerce.
For his keen awareness of the balance between economic freedom and
corporate responsibility, for his abiding interest and participation in huministic
education, for his personal contribution to the well-being of his fellowman, his
community and his nation, Seattle University is proud to confer upon R. V.
Hansberger its highest award, the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.

Academic Costume
The caps, gowns and hoods universally worn by faculties and candidates for degrees at graduating exercises are a costume dating back to the Twelfth Century. In medieval days the scholars were clerics; the buildings were cold, capes and hoods were required for warmth, and robes of scholars were similar to the cassocks of the clerics.
In the course of years of development, caps with tassels have replaced capes for the head covering, the hooded cape has been modified into the present hood, and the gowns with long flowing sleeves have been redesigned to indicate the character of the degree of the wearer. In 1893, a student movement in the United States endorsed academic apparel as overcoming awkwardness and difference in dress at graduation exercises and resulted in a standardization of academic costume in this country.
The Intercollegiate Code, adopted in 1895, recognizes three styles of gowns: a bachelor's gown, a master's gown, and a doctor's gown. The differences in these gowns are mainly in the cut and shape of the sleeves and in the trimming. Hoods are also recognized for each of the above degrees and vary in shape, size and length. The shell of the hood matches the black material of the gown, and is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The velvet bordering of the hood is of a color indicative of the field of learning to which the degree pertains. The Oxford cap, proper for all degrees, is worn both indoors and outdoors with academic costume. The tassel, worn over the left eye once the degree is con-ferred, is also symbolic of the degree and conforms to the code of colors for hood trimming. Prior to the actual conferring of the degree the tassel is worn over the right eye. Holders of Doctor's degrees are en-tided to wear a gold tassel. The tassel of a bachelor's degree indicates the field in which the degree is granted. The color for each field of learning follows:
Arts and Letters White
Theology and Divinity Scarlet
Laws Purple
Philosophy Blue
Science Golden Yellow
Medicine Green
Dentistry Lilac
Veterinary Science Gray
Fine Arts Brown
Music Pink
Library Science Lemon
Education Ice Blue
Forestry Russet

Engineering Orange
Nursing Creen and White
