Twist Roars On,Hyped by CheckerScores on Charts

Discs, flicks, niteries-no one and nothingis spared in the spiraling onslaught of TheTwist, the most enthusiastically received-andperformed - dance craze in years. Parkway'sChubby Checker, the Father of The Twist, Isin the unique position of having eight show-ings on Music Vendor's charts.

A frustrating factor for some manufacturersis the tremendous demand by adults for stereoTwist albums. Frustrating because four of thefive hot Twist LPs on MV's top 60 chart-Chubby Checker with "Your Twist Party,""Twist," "For Twisters Only" and "Let's TwistAgain"-are not in stereo. Consequently, rack-ing up extra sales are such stereo LPs as Rou-lette's "Doin' The Twist at the PeppermintLounge," by Joey Dee and His Starliters (onthe chart), Epic's "Society Dances The Twist,"by Lester Lanin and His Orchestra; Capitol's"It's Twistin' Time, by George Hudson andThe Kings of Twist; "Twist," by Dolton's TheVentures, and Cameo's "Meyer Davis PlaysThe Twist."

Singles on MV's chart include ChubbyChecker's "The "The Twist," "Let's TwistAgain" and `Twistin' U.S.A.," plus readings byJoey Dee and His - Starliters ("Peppermint

Math + Music =Interested Jr. HS PUpils

Music Vendor has become a classroom "tool"at Eastchester (N.Y.) Junior High School. MissFran Goldberg, an eighth grade mathematicsteacher is using MV as a diversion for her reg-ular classroom and study hall students.

"Many students noticing the magazine on mydesk, began asking to see the survey charts,"she revealed. "So after they've completed theirassignments I read them the top 100 singlesand then the fun begins."

By "fun" Miss Goldberg means that the stu-dents' enthusiasm for the discs oftimes becomesvociferous. "Most of the kids compare thecharts with the singles they own, and whenI read them the top songs, many cheer or boo, depending on whether they own the records."she explained.

Teaching regular and business math, MissGoldberg has over 120 students in her classesat the Westchester school. How does a mathteacher come to Music Vendor? Simple; she'sengaged to MV's News Editor.

KEAN - Original Broadway Cast - COLUMBIAKOL 5720.

Famed alcoholic tragedian Edmund Kean andRegency London are given dramatic but somberwax reincarnations on this LP original caster.Sparked by star Alfred Drake's singing and actingflamboyance, this unusual album pleases withSweet Danger especially, the show's most com-mercial tune, sung by Joan Weldon and Drake;Elena, by Drake, Arthur Rubin and Ensemble; TheFog and the Grog, by Drake and Ensemble;Willow, Willow, Willow, by Lee Venora; ChimeIn! by the Ensemble, and Swept Away, by MissWeldon and Drake. All this, and a smattering ofShakespeare, too.

Albam has pack-aged several jazz evergreeps such as Stompin' AtThe Savoy, C Jam Blues and One O'Clock JumpAmong stable of big band standards. disintegrates. That was the eflect the Dukehad on his Town I lall ( NY) concert audiencelast week, when his 14 -piece aggregation play-ed both vintage and current material.

Ellington evergreens were "Black And TaitFantasy" and "Creole Love Call," contempo-rary selections included "Asphalt Jungle" TVtheme, "Paris Blues" movie theme and CongoSquare" from "Drum Is A Woman."

Despite the usual Sam Woodyard drum soloon "Skin Deep," the concert reaffirmed the pop-ularity of other familiar Ellington concert fa-vorites, such as Johnny Hodges wailing on "AllOf Me" and "Sunny Side Of The Street."

Milt Graron, the band's vocalist, whosounds very much like Billy Eckstine, demon-strated his ability to sing in the lower registeron "Day In, Day Out." Grayson closed theregular program with his flag waver. "OneMore Time."

Paul Gonzalves, still trying to re-create the1956 Newport Jazz Festival exposition he builtwith his extra -long solo on "Diminuendo AndCrescendo In Blue," swung heavily through-out the program.

A highlight feature of the program was theNew York "debut" of blues singer LonnieJohnson who offered four tunes: "SeptemberSong," "Tomorrow Night" and "Jelly Roll Beg-gar" plus an intro blues ditty.

Johnson accompanied himself on electric gui-tar and demonstrated a strong, flowing stylefor a man of his years. He was brought out ofretirement for the gig and has been signed toappear at other concert appearances through-out the nation. A smart A&R man might lookinto inking Mr. Johnson to a contract. Theblues shouter is seasoned and ready for wax-ing.

ing their in -person performances" and whenhe takes a band into the recording studio,"they have to be separated for stereo effect,"washing out all he feels he has achieved.

Woody Herman, famed leader of his HermanI lerds, stated his opinion of stereo had chang-ed because of the gimmicky attitude taken bymany companies. "Abuse has changed my ori-ginal opinion of stereo," he said.

Mr. Kapp in making his opening statement, felt that stereo had made no advancements.Ile felt it had "worsened sound because ofthe many open mikes used in a session." Kappalso believes the stereo picture is "confused."

In trying to state that the picture was clear-ing, Enoch Light, who knows just about asmuch as any A&R man in the business aboutstereo, noted that people have to go throughan educational phase with stereo. "Stereo isbeing developed into a medium which presentsmusic as close to an actual performance aspossible. Stereo is still a young development;it's only four years old and we've got a lotmore work to do, but I feel we are at thepoint where it can be used without any gim-micks to present pure musical enjoyment."

The gimmicky effect of stereo was lamblast-ed by Frances Robinson who felt that stereowas only being used to send railroad trains, planes and sports car motors roaring throughthe listeners' living room.

Manny Albam felt that stereo offered hima great opportunity to spotlight sections of theorchestra playing against each other and solo-ing. He cited records on which there wereinstruments he was never able to hear becausethey were in monophonic sound.

Skitch Henderson backed this argument, commenting: "stereo allows for the natural re-presentation of sound; it enhances the record-ing of large orchestral units."

Bill Miltenburg emphasized that listening tomono sound was like "taking a shower withone spray hole open." Stereo can do wonderfulthings, he believes; it allows the A&R man tomove instruments and bring soloists out infront of the band. "Stereo puts air around thesound, giving it a realistic dimension."

On a comical note, William B. Williams,WNEW personality moderating the debate, asked what would happen it die companiespindliehig athe "junk pop nne, st.oteil to re-lease sieo.o albums 01 111, le.nonig, bleat -log teenage stars." United Artists claims to have the first filmfeaturing The Twist, "Teenage Millionaire,"just released, with Chubby Checker, but a rec-ord for fast production and release probablywill be set by two in -the -works filmusicals. Co-lumbia's "Twist Around The Clock," withChubby Checker, Dion, Clay Cole, The Mar-cels and Vickie Spencer, is skedded for open-ings this Christmas; and Paramount's "Hey,Let's Twist," presenting Joey Dee and HisStarliters, Jo -Ann Campbell, Teddy Randazzo,Kay Armen, Zohra Lampert, Dino de Luce andthe Peppermint Loungers, is due around NewYear's. So is Keelou Productions' "Doin' TheTwist," starring Louis Prima and June Wilkin-son. Another, "It's Trad, Dad," should be start-ing in England.

The Twist sensation has turned nitespots inmajor cities into gyrating palaces, night andday. At New York's Roundtable, a past stablefor jazz artists, the dance is being featurednightly and on weekends, spotlighting Hi Rec-ords' Bill Black Combo, also heard on the sin-gle, "Twist -Her," and seen in "Teenage Mil-lionaire."

Black is a Twist titan whose recordings havesold over 10 million copies since he quit theElvis Presley fold to go it with a combo of hisown.
