"There are many who make solemn vows in religion but alas, and more than a hundred thousand times alas, there are all too few today who acquit themselves of them loyally in the sight of God who misses nothing. In order to be saved people are obliged to keep in com-pletely, justly and loyally, all that they have promised and vowed; the punishment for dishonesty is eternal! Surely it would be better not to promise anything and so fail in nothing, than to promise much and then fall abysmally short. (St. Colette Testament)" During the time of St. Colette, the Church and religious life was in disarray. There were two popes. The church was divided. There were different factions within it. Religious life needed reform...big time. It was very relaxed and almost anything was ok. St. Colette had her own ideas of going back to the original charism of the Poor Clares. She started a reform and began forming and building new convents. When we look at the Church today, we can see that the more progressive and liberal religious communities are dying. The traditional and conserva-tive ones are growing. The modern Church is divided between those who are "pre-" or "post-" Vatican II. Pope Benedict XVI wanted to heal that division by calling for the hermeneutic of continuity. I thought it was a great idea. Pope Francis stopped the process. I pray that we have more people like St. Colette in the Church today. Any reform that will work has to begin with a spiritual point of view. This leads me to Renew My Church. Renew My Church is Cardinal Cupich's idea. He told us that he had an experience by the Cross of St. Damiano in Assisi, Italy calling him to reform the Church of Chicago. This month we will begin our conversation regarding the four parishes coming together. We will pray over this process. I know it will not be easy. It will be the most difficult for the founding people of this parish and for those who have spent most of their lives at St. Colette. I think some of us will find this process to be pain-ful. Sadly, some might even leave the parish. I pray that our patroness, St. Colette, who was herself a reformer and a visionary, will help us with her prayers to not lose sight of the ultimate goal of any parish or grouping - to bring people to God.

Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Ministry of Care Report During the past year of 2017, our special collections and donations to our Poor Box amounted to a total of $10,117. In that same period, expenditures to assist those who came to us with emergency needs amounted to a total of $10,648.42. We are grateful for the opportunity to respond to those needs. It is only through the generous giving of those dedicated members of our community that permits us to assist those less fortunate, who for reasons beyond their control, are threatened with eviction, foreclosure, loss of utilities, transportation or inability to feed their families. On their behalf we offer profound gratitude to all who come to their aid, whether in action, financially or in prayer. May God bless you all .

Sunday, Jan. 7th - St. Raymond of Penafort d. 1275

"By the time he was 20, he was teaching philoso-phy. In his early 30s he earned a doctorate in both canon and civil law. At 41 he became a Domini-can. Pope Gregory IX called him to Rome to work for him and to be his confessor. One of the things the pope asked him to do was to gather together all the decrees of popes and councils that had been made in 80 years... At the age of 60, Raymond was appointed archbishop of Tarrago-na, the capital of Aragon. He didn’t like the hon-or at all and ended up getting sick and resigning in two years. He still had 35 years to oppose heresy and work for the conversion of the Moors in Spain."

Wednesday, Jan. 9th -

St. Adrian of Canterbury d. 710 "Though Saint Adrian turned down a papal re-quest to become Archbishop of Canterbury, Eng-land, Pope Saint Vitalian accepted the rejection on the condition that Adrian serve as the Holy Father’s assistant and adviser. Adrian accepted, but ended up spending most of his life and doing most of his work in Canterbury. Born in Africa, Adrian was serving as an abbot in Italy when the new Archbishop of Canterbury appointed him abbot of the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul in Canterbury. Thanks to his leadership skills, the facility became one of the most important centers of learning. The school attracted many outstand-ing scholars from far and wide and produced nu-merous future bishops and archbishops. Students reportedly learned Greek and Latin..."

Thursday, Jan. 10th - St. Gregory of Nyssa - d. 395

"Gregory’s success in his studies suggested great things were ahead for him. After becoming a pro-fessor of rhetoric, he was persuaded to devote his learning and efforts to the Church. By then mar-ried, Gregory went on to study for the priesthood and became ordained... He was elected Bishop of Nyssa in 372, a period of great tension over the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. Briefly arrested after being falsely accused of embezzling Church funds, Gregory was restored to his see in 378, an act met with great joy by his people... He wrote with great effectiveness against Arianism and other questionable doc-trines, gaining a reputation as a defender of or-thodoxy. He was sent on missions to counter oth-er heresies and held a position of prominence at the Council of Constantinople."

Join the growing number of people attending this

mass to praise the Lord and continue to grow closer to God through His word & the Eucharist.

Our next 5:30PM Sunday Evening mass

will be on January 7th, 2018.

Recently, we delivered them to Church Creek, Wings, The Grand, Plum Creek, Friendship Village, and Tamarack. The box will be in church for one more week thru next Sunday.

enero. Lluvia o sol, nuestros voluntarios estarán allí.

ustedes, o cualquier persona que usted sabe necesita

Welcome to Online Giving!

Introducing...GiveCentral!

St. Colette Parish has begun accepting online donations through GiveCentral, our new online

donation service. GiveCentral is a safe, secure, and paperless way to make your Sunday offertory and

other contributions.

It was designed specifically for Catholic churches and schools in the Chicago area, and many other par-ishes in our Diocese have already found success with

it. The site allows you to make a one time or auto-matically repeating payments on a schedule that

works best for you, using any credit card, debit card or electronic bank account.

We believe that having a flexible online giving option will make it easier for many of you

to support St. Colette. Visit our website at www.stcolette.org and click on

the “GiveCentral” link or go to www.GiveCentral.org

and take a couple minutes to set up your donations. Questions? Please call the Parish Office

at 847-394-8100.

que necesitan sus oraciones.

Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Colette, in proclaiming the truth of the Gospel are committed to follow Jesus Christ by being ”the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world”. By our Baptism we are called to serve people of all cultures, migrants, and those who have no voice of their own; our born and unborn children; victims of violence, and the impoverished. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and nurtured by the Eu-charist, we are led to promote human dignity and justice for all people. We believe that this is the way the Lord is calling us to be a sign of His kingdom in this time and place.
