Mutant creatures and Alien invaders
The History• It was the 1950’s that saw the first
introduction of science fiction horror pictures
• The earliest sci-fi horror was in 1951 ‘The thing from another world’
• After WW2 people wanted more entertainment than the usual human faces attached to evil
• This is where Abbott and Costello became popular creating ‘Mutant Madness’
Industry
• Most of these films where low-budget black and white B-movies
• which would precede the main "colour" feature
• Black and white was quickly being replaced in the movie industry
• Many B-movies still managed to achieve huge cult status in later years.
Genre Changes
• In the 1950s films changed to a more sci-fi genre with such films as ‘war of the worlds’ and ‘The day the earth stood still’.
However there was still a market for monsters from Earth such as ‘Dracula’
‘Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and ‘ Hound of the Baskerville’
